Collection Disjointness Analysis in Java

This thesis presents a collection disjointness analysis to find disjointness relations between collections in Java. We define the three types of disjointness relations between collections: must-shared, may-shared and not-may-shared. The collection- disjointness analysis is implemented following the way of a forward data-flow analysis using Soot Java bytecode analysis framework. For method calls, which are usually difficult to analyze in static analysis, our analysis provide a way of generating and reading annotations of a method to best approximate the behavior of the calling methods. Finally, this thesis presents the experimental results of the collection-disjointness analysis on several tests.

Open stope hangingwall design based on general and detailed data collection in unfavourable hangingwall conditions

This thesis presents new methods to improve open stope hangingwall (HW) design based on knowledge gained from site visits, observations, and data collection at underground mines in Canada, Australia, and Kazakhstan. The data for analysis was collected during 2 months of research at the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Ltd. Callinan Mine in Flin Flon, Manitoba, a few trips to the Cameco Rabbit Lake mine in northern Saskatchewan, and 3 years of research and employment at the Xstrata Zinc George Fisher mine near Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. Other sites visited, where substantial stope stability knowledge was accessed include the Inco Thompson mines in northern Manitoba; BHP Cannington mine, Xstrata Zinc Lead Mine, and Xstrata Copper Enterprise Mine, in Queensland, Australia; and the Kazzinc Maleevskiy Mine in north-eastern Kazakhstan. An improved understanding of stability and design of open stope HWs was developed based on: 1) Three years of data collection from various rock masses and mining geometries to develop new sets of design lines for an existing HW stability assessment method; 2) The consideration of various scales of domains to examine HW rock mass behaviour and development of a new HW stability assessment method; 3) The investigation of the HW failure mechanism using analytical and numerical methods; 4) An examination of the effects of stress, undercutting, faulting, and time on stope HW stability through the presentation of observations and case histories; and 5) Innovative stope design techniques to manage predicted stope HW instability. An observational approach was used for the formulation of the new stope design methodology. To improve mine performance by reducing and/or controlling the HW rock from diluting the ore with non-economic material, the individual stope design methodology included creating vertical HWs, leaving ore skins or chocks where appropriate, and rock mass management. The work contributed to a reduction in annual dilution from 14.4% (2003) to 6.3% (2005), an increase in zinc grade from 7.4% to 8.7%, and increasing production tonnes from 2.1 to 2.6 Mt (Capes et al., 2006).

The Rational and Irrational Factor Involved in Decision Making

Although everyone knows that rational thinking is so important, people still always make some decisions by irrational emotion. Previous studies of making decisions suggest that decision makers mainly maximize their own profit based on economical principle and also with the ability to assess every decision selection¡¦s benefit and cost. They also indicate that most management level decision makers may use analytical, rational and logical ways to analyze every problem they encounter and when it refers to decision making. In our daily life, what do we exactly conform to the suggestion of rational decision making theories? Is irrational decision making with emotional involvement consistent with our daily choice and important decision? People make all kinds of decisions no matter they are important or easy decision for himself /herself or for the others. In other word, decisions build up and make up our life, so it is important to understand what kind of factors affects our step of decision making. Through reviewing of the essays and theses, induction of the interview information, we realize rational and irrational factors intervene into the process of decision making. In terms to decision making, we choose ¡§marriage¡¨ as our research scope, discuss rational and irrational factor affect decision makers¡¦ thinking through the four step of decision making: information collection, development of programs, selection of program and implementation of program. In the step of information collection, individual will search for rational consideration and irrational element. Decision maker will make the decision and influence by irrational factors which include affection, emotion and feeling. When it comes to implementation, some ideas emerge in their mind.

Experiments on reflection of solitary waves at a vertical wall

¡@¡@The research on collection or reflection of solitary waves mainly focus on numerical model and theoretical analytics, there are few study on experiment. due to the process on reaction of solitary waves are very short in times, and the waveform is also hardly to measure quantifiable. ¡@¡@The method present in this paper that we setup a high speed camera at a fixed position, and a grid-point board is located in the water tank and out of the tank after pictured, then we capture the process on reflection of solitary wave at a wall by high speed camera, so that the waveform and the grid surface coincide. finally, we analyze the waveform within the grid by using image techniques. ¡@¡@The results of this paper that present several important parameters in several relative wave height, such as maximal run-up, residual time, phase shift..et.al. the other hand, this paper compare the result of experiment with available evidences likes numerical model and theoretical analytics that found to be in quantitative agreement. ¡@¡@In addition, this paper also present the result of experiment that could compare with the new phenomenon "residual falling jet¡¨, it`s published by Chambarel.et.al (2009) numerical model.

Dependability and acceptability of handheld computers in school-based data collection

Given the increasing influence of technology and the explosion in data collection demands, the acceptance and assimilation of new paradigms and technologies require today’s educators, researchers, and evaluators to select appropriate tools and apply them effectively. One of these technologies—handheld computers—makes the benefits of computerized data collection more accessible to field-based researchers. Three related studies were conducted to evaluate handheld-based data collection system for use in special education settings and to highlight the acceptability factors to effectively use this emerging technology. The first study reviewed the recent literature on the dependability and willingness of teachers to adopt handheld data collection systems and emphasized five important factors: (1) perceived ease of use; (2) perceived usefulness; (3) intention to use; (4) dependability; and (5) subjective norms. The second study discussed the dependability of handheld computers used by special education teachers for collecting self-report data by addressing four dependability attributes: reliability, maintainability, availability, and safety. Data were collected from five sources: (1) self-reports of time use by 19 special education teachers using Pocket PC computers, (2) observations of time use from eight external data collectors, (3) teacher interviews, (4) technical reports prepared by the researcher, and (5) teacher satisfaction. Results indicated that data collection via handheld computers yielded accurate, complete, and timely data, and was appropriate for these four dependability attributes. The last study investigated teachers’ acceptance of handheld computer use by testing the relationship among five factors that influence intention to use this technology which was based on a modified version of the technology acceptance model using the handheld computer acceptance survey responses from 45 special education teachers. The results showed that intention to use handheld computer was directly affected by the devices’ perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. The issue of dependability had a direct and indirect statistically significant effect on perceived ease of use and usefulness, and intention to use a handheld computer, respectively. Overall, three studies demonstrated that handheld computers can be effectively used in the direct observation of behavior in a school environment, without requirements of any settings.

Combining Metadata, Inferred Similarity of Content, and Human Interpretation for Managing and Listening to Music Collections

Music services, media players and managers provide support for content classification and access based on filtering metadata values, statistics of access and user ratings. This approach fails to capture characteristics of mood and personal history that are often the deciding factors when creating personal playlists and collections in music. This dissertation work presents MusicWiz, a music management environment that combines traditional metadata with spatial hypertext-based expression and automatically extracted characteristics of music to generate personalized associations among songs. MusicWiz’s similarity inference engine combines the personal expression in the workspace with assessments of similarity based on the artists, other metadata, lyrics and the audio signal to make suggestions and to generate playlists. An evaluation of MusicWiz with and without the workspace and suggestion capabilities showed significant differences for organizing and playlist creation tasks. The workspace features were more valuable for organizing tasks, while the suggestion features had more value for playlist creation activities.

NPR (Non-Photo-Realistic Rendering) is a new and quick-developed research topic in Image Processing. The main purpose of NPR is to generate pencil sketching¡Bwatercolor and oil painting, something different from photos, automatically by computer algorithms. On the other hand, there is another technique called PR (Photo-Realistic Rendering). The goal of PR is to generate real objects by computer algorithms, such as Matting or Inpainting. Furthermore, NPR includes two modes¡Gone is with physical model, researchers could write programs to simulate NPR by the properties of physical model. Without physical model, researchers could write programs to simulate NPR by their observation and deliberation. This thesis to the latter, there is no physical model in NPR. In the viewpoint of artists, drawing is performance of light and shadow. Then, in scientific, drawing depends on the degree of luminance. Luminance supports artists block and direction when drawing. Moreover, This thesis is mainly simulating oil painting with impressionist.

Adaptive Grid-Based Data Collection Scheme for Multiple Mobile Sinks in Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has become a popular wireless technology in recent years. In WSN, a large number of sensors are used to collect data and forward data hop-by-hop to a sink. Due to the unbalancing of traffic load, some grid nodes may consume more energy and their packet loss ratio may be increased as well. In order to improve above-mentioned shortcomings, in this Thesis, we propose an Adaptive Grid-based Data Collection (AGDC) scheme. Because a mobile sink may move, it is possible the traffic load of primary grid nodes can be changed in WSN. According to the distribution of traffic load, the AGDC can adjust transmission range to allocate one or more temporary grid nodes between two primary grid nodes. Through the added temporary grid nodes, traffic load is evenly dispersed among different grid nodes. We allow the primary grid nodes to use smaller transmission power to save energy and allow the temporary grid nodes to buffer data to reduce packet loss ratio. For the purpose of evaluation, we perform simulation on NS-2. With the proposed AGDC scheme, the transmission range of a primary grid node can be set to an appropriate distance to reduce power consumption and packet loss ratio. Since the packet loss ratio is reduced, the throughput of entire WSN is increased.

Detecting Java Memory Leak by Time Series Analysis

A memory leak is a common software vulnerability that will lead to performance degradation of the software or crash or both. A Memory leak is one typical cause of software aging. The phenomenon of memory leaks usually occurs in C/C++ because programmers need to manage memory by themselves when programs run. However, many think that Java does not suffer from memory leaks since Java provides automatic garbage collection. Actually, Java programs will run out of memory unexpectedly after executing for a long time. The reason for Java memory leaks is that reachable objects are no longer needed. These objects should be reclaimed but they can¡¦t because they are still referenced. This thesis introduces a method for filtering the leaked objects in Java memory leak programs. First, we monitor the heap growth after each full garbage collection and the numbers of full garbage collection to identify programs that might have potential memory management problems. Second, we periodically keep track of growth trend of each object of problematic programs and filter out the suspected one by time series analysis. Finally, we execute the program blocks that include objects that we find out to see if the program will run out of memory eventually. The method has been implemented and has been verified successful by four Java memory leak programs.
