Student Success and Reading Comprehension

Lottes-Bishop, Laura Theresa 01 January 2015 (has links)
Nursing administrators are exploring interventions to increase student retention rates in order to decrease college costs, improve faculty effort and time developing courses, decrease administrative resources, and to continue their accreditation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there was a correlation between the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) reading comprehension scores, American College Test (ACT) reading comprehension scores, Comprehensive Computer-Adaptive Testing (COMPASS) reading comprehension scores, and the cumulative college grade point average (GPA) of the first-year nursing student. The theoretical foundation for this study was Tinto's retention theory, which claims that students' past academic performance predicts retention. A correlation approach within a cross-sectional nonexperimental design was used by analyzing data from admission testing and the first-year cumulative GPA from 151 associate degree nursing students from a private college in the Southeast Missouri area. According to study results, there was no correlation between GPAs and reading comprehension scores. Additionally, ACT, TEAS, and COMPASS reading comprehension scores did not correlate with student retention rates. Administrators in the associate degree nursing program can use the results of this study to determine what interventions might determine the success of the first-year nursing student. Positive social change will result from a more diverse set of admission criteria for acceptance into the program and will assist the admissons committees to find the best candidates for the program.

Development of an Active Magnetic Attitude Determination and Control System for Picosatellites on highly inclined circular Low Earth Orbits

Giesselmann, Jens Uwe Michael, jens.giesselmann@gmx.net January 2006 (has links)
Small satellites are becoming increasingly important to the aerospace industry mainly due to their significantly reduced development and launch cost as well as shorter development time frames. In order to meet the requirements imposed by critically limited resources of very small satellites, e.g. picosatellites, innovative approaches have to be taken in the design of effective subsystem technologies. This thesis presents the design of an active attitude determination and control system for flight testing on-board the picosatellite 'Compass-1' of the University of Applied Sciences Aachen, Germany. The spacecraft of the CubeSat class with a net spacecraft mass of only 1kg uses magnetic coils as the only means of actuation in order to satisfy operational requirements imposed by its imagery payload placed on a circular and polar Low Earth Orbit. The control system is capable of autonomously dissipating the tumbling rates of the spacecraft after launch interface separ ation and aligning the boresight of the payload into the desired nadir direction within a pointing error of approximately 10°. This nadir-pointing control is achieved by a full-state feedback Linear Quadratic Regulator which drives the attitude quaternion and their respective rates of change into the desired reference. The state of the spacecraft is determined by a static statistical QUEST attitude estimator processing readings of a three-axis magnetometer and a set of five sun sensors. Linear Floquet theory is applied to quantify the stability of the controller and a non-linear dynamics simulation is used to confirm that the attitude asymptotically converges to the reference in the absence of environmental disturbances. In the presence of disturbances the system under control suffers from fundamental underactuaction typical for purely magnetic attitude control but maintains satisfactory alignment accuracies within operational boundaries.

Indoor Positioning using Sensor-fusion in Android Devices

Shala, Ubejd, Rodriguez, Angel January 2011 (has links)
This project examines the level of accuracy that can be achieved in precision positioning by using built-in sensors in an Android smartphone. The project is focused in estimating the position of the phone inside a building where the GPS signal is bad or unavailable. The approach is sensor-fusion: by using data from the device’s different sensors, such as accelerometer, gyroscope and wireless adapter, the position is determined. The results show that the technique is promising for future handheld indoor navigation systems that can be used in malls, museums, large office buildings, hospitals, etc.

Implementation of a Pedestrian Dead Reckoning System on an Embedded Platform

Ciou, Min-Yan 26 August 2011 (has links)
Positioning and navigation systems play an important role in our daily life, but now most of positioning systems were confined in outdoor environments, most of which were used on transportation. Therefore, the goal of this thesis is to develop a Pedestrian Dead Reckoning System (PDRS), which can not only be used to solve a problem of GPS out-of-lock, but also be used in the field of indoor positioning. In dangerous environments, such as the scene of a fire, when the rescue personnel have an accident on himself or discover a wounded who need to be salvaged, if the rescue personnel who has configured the PDRS, then the other rescue personnel can assist them immediately. In the part of hardware system, we used embedded system to be the primary part of the entire system, the embedded system has the characters of low power consumption and portability. Therefore, we chose the TI OMAP35x EVM platform to be our primary system of PDRS. In order to get the information of pedestrian, we also need the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and Compass to provide the information of acceleration and heading for PDRS. To achieve the function of remote monitoring, we used wireless transmission module to send data of sensors to OMAP35x EVM. Finally, the most important function that we must accomplish in this thesis is to use OMAP35x EVM to build a real-time PDRS. In the part of software system, we use Linux OS and Qt SDK to build the software system of PDRS in this thesis. In the part of algorithm, we use step detection, step length estimation and dead reckoning method to construct the algorithm of PDRS in this thesis.

More or less than human : the influence of shame on psychological distress / Övermänsklig eller undermänsklig : skammens inflytande på psykisk ohälsa

Strömsten, Lotta January 2011 (has links)
Background Shame is a powerful emotion involved in a wide variety of phenomena including psychopathology. The propensity to react with shame to situations of transgression is formed early in life, but the processes by which elevated shame-proneness causes higher levels of psychological distress and functional impairment in some people rather than in others is as yet poorly understood. Objectives The main objective of this thesis was to further elucidate these processes by investigating the implications for shame states, guilt, general coping strategies, attachment styles, and shame-related coping in this context, as well as to evaluate an assessment method for shame-proneness. Methods The self-report questionnaires Test of Self-Conscious Affect (TOSCA), Compass of Shame Scale (CoSS-5), Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ), Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ), Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ), Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90), and an interview measure for event-related shame and guilt were used for assessment in adult normative, healthy-only, crime victim, and patient samples (n=25-361). A combination of uni- and bivariate approaches and multivariate soft and hard modeling approaches were used for statistical analysis. Results Paper I showed that the TOSCA could be used as a reliable measure for shame-proneness. Paper II showed that guilt was unrelated to post-victimization distress. Elevated shame-proneness was related to higher levels of post-victimization distress. This effect was partially mediated by event-related shame. Paper III showed that in CFS patients, higher levels of shame-proneness, escape-avoidance, and accepting responsibility coping contributed to elevated levels of psychological distress. Seeking support, positive reappraisal coping, and proneness to detachment contributed in the opposite direction. These relationships were weaker in the comparison groups. Paper IV showed that shame-proneness was associated with secure attachment style in a negative direction. Higher levels of secure attachment style contributed to lower levels of psychological distress, whereas shame-proneness, insecure attachment styles and withdrawal, attack self, and attack other shame coping strategies contributed in the opposite direction. There were mean differences between women and men regarding most of the variables, butiithe relationships between variables did not differ between men and women. Conclusions The association between shame-proneness and psycho-logical distress seem to involve a complex balancing act between motives toward preserving close relationships and protecting a relatively positive sense of self. If others are perceived as trustworthy and compassionate and are utilized for support in times of need, the effects of shame-proneness may be less debilitating, whereas if others are perceived as distancing or disapproving, and life stress and social transgressions are managed by escape strategies, social withdrawal, self-blame or by transferring blame onto others, the distress effects become more severe. The inner psychodynamics of these functional patterns seem to be rather similar in women and men.

[en] THE PROBLEM OF SQUARING THE CIRCLE IN THE HYPERBOLIC PLANE / [pt] O PROBLEMA DA QUADRATURA DO CÍRCULO NO PLANO HIPERBÓLICO

JOHNNY FELIPE ALVES DE LIMA 22 February 2018 (has links)
[en] Squaring the circle is one of the straightedge and compass constructibility problems whose inception goes back to classical antiquity and that have entertained some mathematicians in the centuries that followed. The development of Modern Algebra has shown beyond doubt that such a construction is impossible in the Euclidean plane. Meanwhile, the so called non-Euclidean Geometries appeared that were based on the replacement of Euclid s fifth postulate (the parallel axiom). The goal of this work is to show how it is possible — under certain constraints — to produce a regular quadrilateral and a circle of same area in the hyperbolic plane by means of (hyperbolic) straightedge and compass alone. An example is presented in full detail, and the necessary and sufficient conditions under which such construction is possible are briefly discussed.

Jogos lógicos no Ensino Fundamental

Rosa, Leandro Viana da January 2016 (has links)
The present research has focused on the introduction of the logical games in the class. It aims to pin point difficulties presented by the students on the different styles of games proposed and a logical ratiocination is required to solve the tasks proposed. The benefits of the games along with the teaching and learning in the classroom was the goal. Additionally, the geometric segment of board games have been investigated and students used tools as ruler and compass to the construction of the boards presented. Therefore, the chosen researching methodology was the Case Study, according to Fiorentini e Lorenzato (2006), Ventura (2007) e Gil (2002). The theoretical referential is based on Works from Macedo (2007), Grando (2011), Skovsmose (2000), Huizinga (2000), Kishimoto (2006), Zuin (2001), along with the PCNs and others articles/books related to logical games and geometric constructions with a ruler and a compass. The activities were performed by a 9th grade group of the Elementary School in a Municipal School in Porto Alegre, in 2015. We showed in particular that is possible the insertion of these materials in order to be used as a sustenance tool on Mathematics Learning contributing positively to students formation. The data collected in the case study enabled the authentication of the proposal.
