The Effects of Mixing, Reaction Rate and Stoichiometry on Yield for Mixing Sensitive Reactions

Shah, Syed Imran A. 06 1900 (has links)
Competitive-Consecutive and Competitive-Parallel reactions are both mixing sensitive reactions; the yield of desired product from these reactions depends on how fast the reactants are brought together. Recent experimental results have suggested that the mixing effect may depend strongly on the stoichiometry of the reactions. To investigate this, a 1-D, non-dimensional, reaction-diffusion model at the micro-mixing scale has been developed. Assuming constant mass concentration and diffusivities, systems of PDEs have been derived on a mass fraction basis for both types of reactions. A single general Damkhler number and specific dimensionless reaction rate ratios were derived for both reaction schemes. The resulting dimensionless equations were simulated to investigate the effects of mixing, reaction rate ratio and stoichiometry of the reactions. It was found that decreasing the striation thickness and the dimensionless rate ratio maximizes yield for both types of reactions and that the stoichiometry has a considerable effect on yield. All three variables were found to interact strongly. Phase plots showing the interactions between the three variables were developed.

Bernardes, Ivana Silveira January 2010 (has links)
Based on theoretical studies and illustrated with case studies, this study aims at contributing to the discussion about the importance of the strategy for companies' development, especially medium-sized companies. Pointing out the differences and applications of various existing tendencies on the subject, and the difficulties faced by companies in their implementation. This theme has been approached mainly on the basis of two tendencies. The first, based on the notion of market equilibrium, where we highlight the Strategic Positioning Theory and the Resource-Based Theory. The second tendency is associated with a dynamic view of the market, where we highlight the Market Process Theory and the Dynamic Capabilities Theory, which includes the Theory of Competence-Based Competition (RUAS; ANTONELLO; BOFF, 2005). The Strategic Positioning Theory gained momentum in the 70s, with the works of Porter, and puts the strategic decisions dependent on exogenous factors, where the competitive advantages of companies are linked to its ability to adapt to the sectors where they are inserted. The Resource-Based Theory sprang from the ideas of Penrose (1959) and was developed by Barney and Hesterly (1991) and attributed the competitive advantages of companies to their resources and their ability to use them optimally. The Theory of Competence-Based Competition addresses the capacity of organizations to support coordinated allocation of resources to achieve their goals. This theory rose from the works of Prahalad and Hamel (1995), who created the concept of Core Competence. Taking into account the Strategic Positioning Theory and the Resource-Based Theory as the theoretical basis, restricting the analysis on competences to the premise that the ability to optimal use of resources can be identified as such, it was possible, from the analysis of reports arising from meetings with managers from 3 midsize companies with operations in different segments, it was concluded that, despite the conceptual differences, there is no evidence that any of the approaches is totally invalid or denied by other. Their influence on corporate strategies are of different orders and the great challenge of obtaining superior results demand a deep understanding and, especially, an analysis of how the company is working each of the shown dimensions.

The competitive and dynamic changes to which Brazilian comapanies are included demands tahth they about strategies so that their actions are planned, and it structure is suitable for the environment you want to act. The clothing industry, in addition to this competitive environment, has the distinction of being in part of their supply chain involved with diversity and change their products, resulting directly in changing their production processes, which further accentuates the need alignment of strategies and competitive production strategy. This paper aims to analyze the aligment of competitive strategies and production companies producing clothing, belonging to the Arranjo Produtivo Local Moda Sudoeste (APLMS). As secondary objective, we seek to examine the alignment between manufacturing strategy through its production priorities and areas of structural decisions and infrastructure of the production process that support these competing priorities. We developed a descriptive case study through a filed with six companies. The results of this survey revealed that companies are mostly small, and act in two competitive strategies. The producers of pants fad jeans have the competitive strategy of differentiation, and the social production of pants have the competitive strategy of lowest cost. The priorities of mainly the quality and flexibility, and business and competitive strategy are the lowest cost quality and cost. Data were also obtained, to identify the practical lack of alignment between competitive strategy and manufacturing companies surveyed, especially the great opportunity to implement techniques and practices that deploy competitive priorities of those companies in structural decisions and infrastructure that are active and competitive strategy aligned to them

Konkurrens inom hotellbranschen : En jämförande studie om uppfattad konkurrens utifrån två perspektiv

Dillworth Westin, Emma, Eklund, Linda January 2008 (has links)
The hotel industry in Stockholm is characterized by intense competition, and within the next couple of years the construction of a number new hotels is planed. As the number of hotels in Stockholm increase, the competition will increase and the importance of having well functioning strategies will become vital. The purpose of this essay is to examine how two hotels within the hotel industry in Stockholm experience and handle the competition. The two hotels that are included in the study are Clarion Hotel Stockholm and Scandic Continental. The essay derives from models and theories that are related to marketing and competition. Our study shows that the perception of competition varies, in addition to the fact that choice of competitive strategies varies dependent on the hotel’s concept. The hotel industry in Stockholm is divided into different areas, depending on which area hotels choose to serve the competitive environment will differ. A hotel with a specific niche will limit its competitors to a narrow number that operate within the same niche. The results of our study show evidence that the competition in the hotel industry in Stockholm is divided, and that this divisional competition will continue to increase as the industry develops. The building of new hotels in the next couple of years will aid the progress of a possible collaboration between the hotels in Stockholm in the future, and thus attract larger meetings and events.
