Stress fractures : ethics and the provision of sports medicine at the elite level in New ZealandAnderson, Lynley Carol, n/a January 2005 (has links)
The provision of medical care to top-level athletes in New Zealand comes with a number of challenging ethical issues. Some of these arise out of the commercial interest present in sport that links sporting success with funding, sponsorship deals and media interest. The requirement that athletes stay at peak physical function in order to be successful can, at times, be at odds with concepts of well-being and good health. The employment structure under which doctors are engaged by teams and the employment contracts which define these relationships can be the source of divided loyalty for doctors. For example, sharing health information beyond the doctor-athlete relationship may be in line with contractual obligations, but at odds with what the athlete requests. Divided loyalties also exist when athletes wish to participate in sport despite high risk of harm. Here there is a difference between what the doctor understands as the athletes best interest, and the athletes consideration of best interest.
This thesis adopts two strategies for examining the area of sports medicine in elite athletes in New Zealand. The first section utilizes qualitative research. Sixteen sports doctors were interviewed and the data analysed. The next section involves normative reflection. Here two issues (where a range of behaviours were exhibited by participants) selected from the data are considered and discussion is presented on how doctors should respond to these issues. An examination of the level of guidance offered to sports doctors from the Australasian College of Sports Physicians Code of Ethics follows. The level of guidance offered is considered inadequate and the thesis ends with a call to attend to these concerns.

Espaço público e cidadania : autoridade, confiança e compromissoKlein, Maria Isabel Pezzi January 2012 (has links)
The thesis is a careful thought about the political, social and legal system of our western democracies. It shows how we need, as soon as possible, to make na anthropological overturn, like an alternative to get over the immeasurable crisis we are suffering now. In this task, we are supported by Hannah Arendt’s political philosophy. This wonderful thinker taught that we need to treat the others like equals. At least, if we want to build a human life in the world with a real public space where the political action can happen. If animal laborans keeps the control over the public arena, it will not be a truly public sphere, but only a place where private activities are showed. We will get over the problems if we realize that violence destroys the power and the authority. So, we need to rescue the citizen’s trust and the compromise between the Government and people. It is a real change in the anthropological perspective that deeply affects the political, legal and social orders. Aninal laborans gets out of the public scene. He is replaced by a lovely newcomer: zôon politikón, who lives a truly Human Condition. Actually, he lives in a democratic society in which citizens have access to political debate and can themselves be heard in it. He knows that only in this special place, where we are together, a sphere of open and free discussion is possible. The public space is the place where exists the much-needed trust and the common consent of citizens for build and do work the political and legal orders. We outline a historical retrospect scenery of the western political organizations and their public spheres in order to point out the evolution that happened in the societies in face of the several political, legal and social facts that permeated the last centuries. Especially, we emphasize the effects and consequences of that facts in the citizens’s behavior and citizen’s understanding. We consider that it is quite indispensable to enable and improve the legal reasoning, especially the pratical reasoning, because we believe that the human understanding is the other side of our capacity of action. In this way, we defend the great value of legal reasoning for active citizenship. Actually, we believe in this alternative to recover the ethical, legal and political density of public space, legitimating its rules.

The contribution of a third person in a training device teachers beginnersLuminet, Marine 04 June 2018 (has links)
How do the rules are appropriated during the year of preservice teachers? The traditional conception of education gives a crucial role to the experts and focuses on the place of professional collectives in the development of the activity of teachers in training. Does sociology have to say or complain about this approach? The result of our survey based of three schools, show that the classical dyadic relationship expert-tutor / novice does not always allow novices to appropriate the rules of trade. This dyadic configuration does not favor the game of argumentation and counter-argumentation through agreements or disagreements and get difficult the learning of rules. Would not it be better to introduce a third party to overcome the statutory obstacles breaking the relationship. This is what we choose to do from an experimental approach based on the establishment of a triadic relationship. The third party raises the level of the justifying constraint and the tutor's advice can no longer rely solely on the statutory advantage he enjoyed hitherto.

iGen: Toward Automatic Generation and Analysis of Indicators of Compromise (IOCs) using Convolutional Neural NetworkJanuary 2017 (has links)
abstract: Field of cyber threats is evolving rapidly and every day multitude of new information about malware and Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) is generated in the form of malware reports, blog articles, forum posts, etc. However, current Threat Intelligence (TI) systems have several limitations. First, most of the TI systems examine and interpret data manually with the help of analysts. Second, some of them generate Indicators of Compromise (IOCs) directly using regular expressions without understanding the contextual meaning of those IOCs from the data sources which allows the tools to include lot of false positives. Third, lot of TI systems consider either one or two data sources for the generation of IOCs, and misses some of the most valuable IOCs from other data sources.
To overcome these limitations, we propose iGen, a novel approach to fully automate the process of IOC generation and analysis. Proposed approach is based on the idea that our model can understand English texts like human beings, and extract the IOCs from the different data sources intelligently. Identification of the IOCs is done on the basis of the syntax and semantics of the sentence as well as context words (e.g., ``attacked'', ``suspicious'') present in the sentence which helps the approach work on any kind of data source. Our proposed technique, first removes the words with no contextual meaning like stop words and punctuations etc. Then using the rest of the words in the sentence and output label (IOC or non-IOC sentence), our model intelligently learn to classify sentences into IOC and non-IOC sentences. Once IOC sentences are identified using this learned Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based approach, next step is to identify the IOC tokens (like domains, IP, URL) in the sentences. This CNN based classification model helps in removing false positives (like IPs which are not malicious). Afterwards, IOCs extracted from different data sources are correlated to find the links between thousands of apparently unrelated attack instances, particularly infrastructures shared between them. Our approach fully automates the process of IOC generation from gathering data from different sources to creating rules (e.g. OpenIOC, snort rules, STIX rules) for deployment on
the security infrastructure.
iGen has collected around 400K IOCs till now with a precision of 95\%, better than any state-of-art method. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Computer Science 2017

Different Concerns for Different Careers: Doctoral Student Career Trajectories Toward and Away from the Research ProfessorshipJanuary 2018 (has links)
abstract: Research has revealed that familial concerns and obligations do impact the career decision making of people who shift their career goal away from the research academy and towards careers that are perceived as less intensive in terms of time and productivity demands. However, this same research line does not explain whether or not those who persist in a research professorship career aspiration experience the same familial concerns and obligations as those who shift or compromise on that goal. In line with the theory of circumscription and compromise (TCC), the current study examined specific accessibility concerns, or perceptions of barriers associated with implementing a preferred career, that contribute to doctoral student career decision making. More specifically, two groups including those who shifted their career path away from the research professorship (compromisers) and those whose career paths remain geared towards the research professorship (persisters) were examined by multivariate analysis of variance with a covariate (MANCOVA) to determine how accessibility concerns differ according to group membership. Accessibility concerns were also examined for gender differences. Results from multivariate and between-subjects follow up tests point to significant differences between the two groups on two accessibility concerns, planning for a career and family and some components of work-time flexibility preferences. Compromisers reported significantly higher preferences for work-time flexibility and scored higher on the planning for a career and a family measure when compared to persisters. No gender differences in accessibility concerns were found but female persisters were less likely than male persisters to indicate plans for children/presence of children. This study provides support for the TCC as applied to doctoral student career development and provides evidence that doctoral student persisters and compromisers do not experience accessibility concerns in the same way. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Counseling Psychology 2018
