Defense Against Node Compromise in Sensor Network Security

Chen, Xiangqian 15 November 2007 (has links)
Recent advances in electronic and computer technologies lead to wide-spread deployment of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). WSNs have wide range applications, including military sensing and tracking, environment monitoring, smart environments, etc. Many WSNs have mission-critical tasks, such as military applications. Thus, the security issues in WSNs are kept in the foreground among research areas. Compared with other wireless networks, such as ad hoc, and cellular networks, security in WSNs is more complicated due to the constrained capabilities of sensor nodes and the properties of the deployment, such as large scale, hostile environment, etc. Security issues mainly come from attacks. In general, the attacks in WSNs can be classified as external attacks and internal attacks. In an external attack, the attacking node is not an authorized participant of the sensor network. Cryptography and other security methods can prevent some of external attacks. However, node compromise, the major and unique problem that leads to internal attacks, will eliminate all the efforts to prevent attacks. Knowing the probability of node compromise will help systems to detect and defend against it. Although there are some approaches that can be used to detect and defend against node compromise, few of them have the ability to estimate the probability of node compromise. Hence, we develop basic uniform, basic gradient, intelligent uniform and intelligent gradient models for node compromise distribution in order to adapt to different application environments by using probability theory. These models allow systems to estimate the probability of node compromise. Applying these models in system security designs can improve system security and decrease the overheads nearly in every security area. Moreover, based on these models, we design a novel secure routing algorithm to defend against the routing security issue that comes from the nodes that have already been compromised but have not been detected by the node compromise detecting mechanism. The routing paths in our algorithm detour those nodes which have already been detected as compromised nodes or have larger probabilities of being compromised. Simulation results show that our algorithm is effective to protect routing paths from node compromise whether detected or not.

Trade-Offs In Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Associated with Development In a Low pH-Environment

Tigert, Liam 05 May 2021 (has links)
Low water pH is an ionoregulatory challenge to freshwater teleosts. Larval zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed to pH 4 water experience increased loss of Na⁺ and respond with increases in ionocyte abundance and whole-body concentrations of cortisol. Because cortisol plays a role in regulating early development, particularly of the stress axis, the present study asked whether the increase in cortisol in embryos exposed to pH 4 water causes dysregulation of the stress axis in later life. Baseline whole-body cortisol levels measured at 4, 6, and 15 days post-fertilization (dpf) did not differ between pH 4-exposed and control fish. At 6 dpf, pH 4-exposed fish had higher concentrations of cortisol compared to control fish following a stressor, but no difference was detected at 15 dpf. In addition, transcript abundances for key genes of the stress axis did not differ between control and pH 4-exposed fish. Based on these results, exposure to pH 4 water in early life does not influence the stress axis or cortisol responses later in life. Increases in ionocyte abundance in response to low pH have the potential to alter gill morphology, thereby impairing gas transfer, a trade-off known as the osmorespiratory compromise. The present study tested the hypothesis that zebrafish reared in pH 4 water have reduced gas transfer capacity in accordance with the osmorespiratory compromise. Indicators of gas transfer and ionoregulation were measured at 6, 15, 30 and 90 dpf. Across all ages examined, fish reared in pH 4 water had significantly higher whole-body concentrations of Na⁺, higher ionocyte abundances and thicker gills than control fish. These differences were accompanied by higher ventilation frequencies and higher critical PO₂ (Pcrit) values. Additionally, adult fish raised in low pH had a significantly higher rate of oxygen consumption compared to control fish. These results support the hypothesis that development in water of low pH impairs gas transfer, as predicted by the osmorespiratory compromise.

How Pricing Strategies For E-Commerce Are Affected By Website Usability / Hur prissättningsstrategier inom e-handel påverkas av hemsidans användbarhet

Nyström, Filip, Lundberg, Filip, Johansson, Arvid, Rättgård, Einar, Grinneby, Sven, Ekberg, Lukas, Södereng, Lisa January 2023 (has links)
The growth of e-commerce, accelerated by the covid-19 pandemic, have fundamentally changed how companies commercialize their products. To remain competitive, many retail companies must transition parts of, or their entire, selling process to the internet. This poses the challenge of creating a website which satisfies as many of the needs of the consumer as possible, whilst still being accessible and easy to use. The usability of a website, which essentially is the perceived quality of a user experience, affects both to what extent customers experience satisfaction and to what extent they perform purchases. The purpose of this study was both to examine the relationship between selling strategies, such as the decoy effect and the compromise effect, and perceived usability of an e-commercewebsite, as well as determining how effective said selling strategies are for increasing purchase amount.By creating a high usability e-commerce website for phone cases and related products and then performing user tests in which 42 individuals were asked to perform purchase scenarios in which they were or were not exposed to selling strategies, the correlation between the perceived usability and the effectiveness of selling strategies were investigated. The 42 user tests showed no correlation between the effectiveness of the selling strategies and the perceived usability of the website. An increase in the perceived usability did however correlate to an increase in average purchase amount, and the selling strategies did increase the average purchase amount when applied. The lack of correlation between perceived usability and the effectiveness of selling strategies were inconsistent with the initial hypothesis. The discussion of this paper addresses potential explanations to the result. Several parts of the study can be altered to eliminate or mitigate identified error sources in the method. The extent to which these error sources affected the results of this study is not conclusively established, but several future improvements can be made to continue this academic inquiry, which is considered both relevant and of increasing importance.

A goal-oriented, inverse decision-based design method for designing football helmets

Fonville, Tate Russell 03 May 2019 (has links)
A goal-oriented, inverse decision-based design method to find satisficing solutions for multiple football helmet components that all work together to achieve a set of conflicting goals is presented. The efficacy of the method is illustrated with the design of the top region of an American football helmet. The prototype helmet was first constructed and tested with a twin-wire drop tower to study the different components effect on the system response. The inverse design method is used to design the foam liner to dissipate the maximum impact energy, and then the composite shell is designed to reduce the weight. The Concept Exploration Framework and the compromise Decision Support Problem are used to find satisficing solutions to the system-level performance goals under uncertainty. The proposed goal-oriented, inverse decision-based design method is generic and will be used to design additional components, the complete helmet, and ultimately helmets for other sports.

Unga Vuxna

Bolin, Linda, Asplid Davidsson, Therese January 2015 (has links)
Dropping out of school has implications both for the individual person and of society. At the community becomes poorer tax revenue and increased social costs. A person who does not complete upper secondary school today gets more difficult to enter the labor market, which can lead to long-term exclusion. The purpose of this study is to analyze the causes of what it is that makes our respondents, young adults aged 20-25 years, have no upper secondary school and what their motivation is to start studying again. Our research questions are about people who have no upper secondary school, the reason they are back in studies again and their views on the consequences when one lacks full upper secondary school. We contacted adult education to find interview subjects and conducted five interviews. We have done our analysis from the theories Careership Hodkinson and Sparkes has formulated and Linda Gottfredson's theory of circumscription and compromises. The result shows that the most common reason why our informants have no upper secondary school is the wrong choice, but we also see other reasons. The majority of the informants had someone close that motivated them back to study again.

Seeing the Sausage Made: How Compromise Works in Large Groups and Representative Bodies

Crawford, James E, Jr. 01 January 2014 (has links)
Inspired by the lack of Congressional compromise during the 2013 federal shutdown, I explore how compromise works in large groups and representative bodies. An on-line survey, personal interviews, and a discourse analysis of the Congressional Record yield a diverse collection of data, including personal and public stories of compromise. I examine the stories and other data through an eclectic mix of contemporary scholarship, borrowing literary theory from the Russian critic Mikhail Bakhtin, socio-linguistic concepts from American linguist James Paul Gee, and moral philosophy from Israeli thinker Avishai Margalit. I also incorporate the work of political scientists Amy Gutmann and Dennis Thompson, as well as the political campaign coverage of writer and essayist Joan Didion. My examination shows that differences in Discourse, Gee’s expansive model of the discourse community, underpin the uncompromising mindset that dominated the 2013 shutdown. I show that public and personal compromise have obvious differences in terms of scope and complexity, but that all successful compromises, of any size, rest on a bedrock of trust. My research uncovered more effective ways of brokering legislative compromise in the future. I also learned that public opinion polls do not influence legislative decisions. Instead, regular, personal contact, whether by phone, fax, or e-mail, is the best way to engage and influence legislators. Finally, I consider the challenges and limitations of my research, including the difficulty of collecting a large, diverse survey sample, and scheduling personal interviews with public officials.

Arbitrage et procédures collectives / Arbitration and insolvency proceedings

Ossagou, Diane Loïca 06 December 2017 (has links)
The purpose of the thesis is to deal with the meeting between arbitration and collective proceedings. It is organized around a triple statement. At first, marked by a strong imperialism, considerations of public order, the opening of a collective procedure is not without incidence on the arbitration bodies in course and on the arbitration bodies which have not yet started . The public order of collective proceedings has an impact both on the conduct of the arbitral proceedings and on the outcome of the arbitral award.Secondly, arbitration, which is marked by the will of the parties, contractual freedom, survives despite the opening of a collective proceeding. Indeed, the public order of the collective proceedings is not sufficient to exclude arbitration. The arbitrator's jurisdiction is upheld for all disputes that are not born of the collective proceeding and over which the latter has no legal influence. Lastly, persists during the meeting between arbitration and collective proceeding, a post-arbitration litigation.

We come from of the presupposed that the answer for the challengers that have been showed by the contemporary world demand for the lecturer graduation in the Pedagogy course as a social process of acquisition and building knowledge that became possible the development of the lecturer who knows the challengers have been get to a on this new time, for contribute in the senses to promote a human and democratic education. The documental legislation that regulate the Pedagogy course since it was introduced reveal the problems which have followed up the lecturer graduation process in the historical trajectory in the social and economic development from the country and put in evidence the scenario of precarious of the graduation in our historical moment. Face his situation, we can conclude that the pragmatic conception of the education and the quickness of the lecturer graduation courses have guided the education reforms and the lecturer politic graduation have become difficult the promotion of a huge human graduation and the development of the lecturer social commitment.

Klein, Maria Isabel Pezzi January 2012 (has links)
The thesis is a careful thought about the political, social and legal system of our western democracies. It shows how we need, as soon as possible, to make na anthropological overturn, like an alternative to get over the immeasurable crisis we are suffering now. In this task, we are supported by Hannah Arendt’s political philosophy. This wonderful thinker taught that we need to treat the others like equals. At least, if we want to build a human life in the world with a real public space where the political action can happen. If animal laborans keeps the control over the public arena, it will not be a truly public sphere, but only a place where private activities are showed. We will get over the problems if we realize that violence destroys the power and the authority. So, we need to rescue the citizen’s trust and the compromise between the Government and people. It is a real change in the anthropological perspective that deeply affects the political, legal and social orders. Aninal laborans gets out of the public scene. He is replaced by a lovely newcomer: zôon politikón, who lives a truly Human Condition. Actually, he lives in a democratic society in which citizens have access to political debate and can themselves be heard in it. He knows that only in this special place, where we are together, a sphere of open and free discussion is possible. The public space is the place where exists the much-needed trust and the common consent of citizens for build and do work the political and legal orders. We outline a historical retrospect scenery of the western political organizations and their public spheres in order to point out the evolution that happened in the societies in face of the several political, legal and social facts that permeated the last centuries. Especially, we emphasize the effects and consequences of that facts in the citizens’s behavior and citizen’s understanding. We consider that it is quite indispensable to enable and improve the legal reasoning, especially the pratical reasoning, because we believe that the human understanding is the other side of our capacity of action. In this way, we defend the great value of legal reasoning for active citizenship. Actually, we believe in this alternative to recover the ethical, legal and political density of public space, legitimating its rules.
