A Computational Approach for the Study of Color Modulation and Contrasts in Visual Art

Agahchen, Anissa 28 August 2014 (has links)
This thesis describes a computational approach for analyzing the color aesthetics of images from the perspective of color theory. Our work has been informed by the works of Johannes Itten, one of the most influential theorists of color aesthetics. To the best of our knowledge, developing computational models that are based on Itten's theories is our unique contribution to Computer Vision. We focus on three aspects of color usage in visual art, namely modulation, contrast of hue and cold-warm contrast. For modulation, we introduce the color palette, a novel 3D visualization of the chromatic information of an image in the HSL space and propose a set of simple descriptors for evaluating color modulation. For contrast of hue, we assess the spatial color composition of the homogeneous regions. For cold-warm contrast, we assess the spatial color composition of the homogeneous regions and the hue adjacencies. Further, we assess the relative warmth of the homogeneous regions and adjacent hues. We also propose a visualization, namely a 3D histogram to visualize the patterns of the contrasts in an artist's paintings. We validate our methods by comparing our results with Itten's descriptions and comments. We hope that this computational approach improves the color-based features used in the aesthetic classification of images. / Graduate / 0984

Ambiguity in Peace Agreements : Cognitive and Computational Models for Processing Syntactic Ambiguity in Israeli-Palestinian Peace Agreements in English

Asghari, Parastoo January 2018 (has links)
Systems that attempt to process texts and acquire information from texts in English need to be particularly alert to noun phrases since they carry so much information. Systems, whether comprehensional or computational, may face particular difficulties when dealing with complex noun phrases. One of the decomposition patterns for noun phrases is left or right branching, which determines the semantic relations between the constituents of the combination. This degree project seeks to describe a processing model that the comprehension system employs to process difficulties. Since the minicorpus studied in this research consists of four of the peace agreements that were produced in English for Israeli and Palestinian sides of their conflicts to sign and implement, the comprehension models that were used by a non-native speaker of English are described, and then a computational model to enhance performing this task is suggested which includes using the frequencies of the combinations of the constituents in two major contemporary corpora, the Corpus of Contemporary American English and the British National Corpus, to help decide how to nest the noun phrases as either left or right branching structures, to resolve the ambiguity problem. Hyphening is also suggested as a potential strategy to avoid unwanted structural ambiguity in adjective + noun + noun combinations.

Etude des interactions de la protéine PMP22 avec les intégrines dans la pathogénie de la maladie de Charcot-Marie-Tooth de type 1A / Interactions study of PMP22 protein with integrins in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A pathogenesis

Jouaud, Maxime 16 December 2016 (has links)
Interactions study of PMP22 protein with integrins in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A pathogenesisChanges in the PMP22 gene (Peripheral Myelin Protein 22) are responsible for peripheral nervous system neuropathies: Hereditary Neuropathy with liability to Pressure Palsy (HNPP) when PMP22 is deleted, Charcot Marie Tooth disease subtype 1A (CMT1A) when PMP22 is duplicated and CMT1E or HNPP when point mutations are present on the PMP22 gene. However, the PMP22 role in these neuropathies remains unclear. Firstly, we studied one of the PMP22 interaction partner: the α6β4 integrin (a laminin receptor), which could be involved in the CMT1A. During this study, we used a transgenic rat model carrying supplementary copies of PMP22 gene from mouse. With this model, we showed variations of expression of integrins genes and a mislocalization of integrins proteins. These variations of integrins witnesses a delay in myelinating Schwann cells maturation, explaining the reduction of myelin sheath thickness observed on CMT1A rats. In a second time, we studied the case of a patient without PMP22 expression, carrying compound mutations one the two alleles of PMP22. We showed that the lack of PMP22 on human leads to a complete lack of myelin due to a blocking in mesaxon formation. In a third time, we conducted a comparative study of animal models and patients with CMT1A / 1E and HNPP. This study allows us to validate the use of such models in the study of neuropathies. Finally, thanks to computational tools we studied the three-dimensional structure of different protein, including PMP22 by using molecular dynamics. This three-dimensional model is the starting point of point mutations study as well as PMP22 interactions with its environments. With animal models and through the study of patients, we have demonstrated the indispensable role of PMP22 in myelin initiation as well as, its effect on integrins expression in CMT1A. The use of PMP22 three-dimensional computational model will help us to understand effects of point mutation on PMP22 structure and interactions.

Development, Implementation, and Analysis of a Contact Model for an Infectious Disease

Thompson, Brett Morinaga 05 1900 (has links)
With a growing concern of an infectious diseases spreading in a population, epidemiology is becoming more important for the future of public health. In the past epidemiologist used existing data of an outbreak to help them determine how an infectious disease might spread in the future. Now with computational models, they able to analysis data produced by these models to help with prevention and intervention plans. This paper looks at the design, implementation, and analysis of a computational model based on the interactions of the population between individuals. The design of the working contact model looks closely at the SEIR model used as the foundation and the two timelines of a disease. The implementation of the contact model is reviewed while looking closely at data structures. The analysis of the experiments provide evidence this contact model can be used to help epidemiologist study the spread of an infectious disease based on the contact rate of individuals.

Pesquisa do Estado de S?o Paulo - FAPESP / The aim of this work was to study the phenomenon of facilitation in the establishment and development of populations of Lemna aequinoctialis Welw .. through the computer model in NetLogo. For both crops were carried out ex situ to establish parameters and variables to be used in developing the model, and study the phenomenon of facilitation between individuals. With the computational model, we sought to test the ideal inoculum for this facilitation in non-axenic. The experiments were performed in pond water and autoclaved without autoclaving in solution Pirson & Siedel, and various concentrations of citrate Lead. Each week to count the number of individuals sprouted. The results were organized in spreadsheet and produced curves were adjusted in the regression model. A comparison of the results was evaluated from the t test with a confidence level of 5%. The results showed that the cultivation lead promotes increased growth rate of Lemna aequinoctialis Welw. That an individual can stay alive up to 70 days in medium without resetting, and that there is facilitation between individuals of the same species for their development in contaminated environments, so there is a minimum amount by which the colonies are established. The computational model describes the behavior of Lemna aequinoctialis Welw. a simulated environment with and without contamination by microorganisms. The hypothesis of facilitation was studied and showed that a single frond of Lemna in non-axenic not developed, two individuals can develop, and the minimum to ensure the establishment and growth is four individuals. Deformačně napěťová analýza proximálního femuru s dříkem endoprotézy a zlomeninou / Stress analysis of proximal femur with the stem of the prosthesis and the fracture

Kalová, Miroslava January 2012 (has links)
This work is focused on a solving of problems regarding a total hip replacement with a fractured femur. The fracture is located in the distal end of the total joint replacement stem and the fracture is spreading in the proximal direction on the boundary of the bone and cement. A proximal part of femur is reinforced by fixing tape. There is also briefly described how computer models were carried out. Furthermore a stress - strain analysis of solved system has been performed in this work. The solution was realized using the finite element method in computational program ANSYS Workbench. Different variants with change of a fracture range and number of fixing tapes were considered during the solving. Stress - strain analysis shows that due a application of fourth fixing tape occurs lowering of main stresses values in the femur in fracture region. Simultaneously occurs a reduction of Equivalent stress values on a distal part of stem.

Stanovení dynamických vlastnosti rotoru turbodmychadla / Determination of Turbocharger Rotor Dynamic Properties

Blaha, Adam January 2014 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with dynamic behaviour of a turbocharger rotor. The subject is a stock turbocharger for commercial vehicles. The research will be mentioned in the first part of the thesis as well as methods of processing. The second, practical part is divided into two divisions. They are both experimental and computational. The aim is finding of rotordynamic behaviour by an experiment and its comparing with a computational model in ANSYS software. Modal and harmonic analysis of a free and fixed subject will be used by both experiment and evaluation. The subject will be fixed where bearings are located during harmonic analysis. All the experimental results will be processed with mathematical and physical methods like FFT analysis or Campbel diagram. There will be two main types of computational models to choose among. These models will be analyzed in detail. The goal of the thesis is to reach results from ANSYS as close as possible with the experimental testing. This includes finding correct material and physical properties, right choice of mesh and right boundary conditions. At the same time the CPU time compared to the model complexity and results accuracy will be considered in a comparison with data obtained by the experiment.
