In conversation with a gay man : a deconstruction of autobiographical documents

Wolson, Shane 18 September 2007 (has links)
This study offers the reader an opportunity to glimpse the world and narrative of a gay man recently come out of the closet and to be invited to participate in his search for improved understanding of his sense of identity. It is a study of autobiographical works in order to gain insight into the changes occurring in the author’s sense of identity but is also in itself an autobiographical work. It is a reflection on the author’s story and an interpretation of aspects of that story, using selected documents written by him over a period of time, in order to highlight specific changes that occur in his sense of identity. The aim of this study is to generate some insight into the sense of identity of a gay man, and optimistically other marginalised groups of people, with specific focus on the changes that have occurred over. This study will be approached from a social constructionist paradigm using qualitative and interpretative methods to analyse the various autobiographical works. This will provide information on the changes that occur over time in a gay man’s sense of identity. / Dissertation (MA (Counselling Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Psychology / MA / unrestricted

An autoethnographic account of married life after traumatic brain injury : a couple's co-construction of their journey

Graham, Jennifer Ann 01 1900 (has links)
This autoethnography explores the phenomenon of marriage after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Capturing as its data, through a series of audio-recorded conversations and journal entries, the first-hand, co-constructed experiences of a married couple, it provides an ‘insider’ and as such, intimate perspective on life together following such an unexpected, disruptive and life-altering event. Situated within ‘a systemic constructionist’ epistemology, it spotlights, in particular, the relational aspects of the post-TBI marriage unfolding over time, rather than just the individual perspectives of each spouse at a single point in time - as most existing studies on the topic do. As a qualitative study, it made allowance for the collection and use of rich, nuanced data so as to do some justice to the complex nature of the topic being studied. David Reiss’ explanatory theory on ‘crisis and the development of the family paradigm’ was applied deductively during the carrying out of a thematic analysis of the data, with the intention of bringing new insights to the understanding of the phenomenon of the post-TBI marriage. Data were also analysed inductively, in that themes emerging from the data itself were also used. A discussion based on the findings of the data analysis was proffered. Based on these findings, recommendations on what issues therapists working from within a family-systems orientation might focus their attention on were made. A recommendation for TBI couples to receive support from early intervention and follow-up services was also made, along with identifying the consequent need for research first to be done on developing and implementing such a service / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Drabbade män och beroende kvinnor : En aktstudie utifrån ett genusperspektiv / Victimized men and depending women : A case file study with a gender perspective

Rydén, Ida, Hellström, Josephine January 2014 (has links)
The purpose was to analyze needs assessment investigation to explore if there are differences in the linguistic and content regarding gender. We have common interest in both gender perspective and disability care. Therefore these areas were chosen for the study. Karin Barron and her theory about disabled people being declined their gender was the inspiration to the study.  A social constructionist and a gender perspective were used throughout this research and a qualitative content analyze were used to analyze and process the documents. The documents consisted by needs assessment investigation regarding applications about personal assistance. The applications are regulated by the Swedish law, Lagen om stöd och service för vissa funktionshindrade (SFS 1993:387). The data was collected from a relatively large municipality. The results show that in these documents gender is visible and creates different images of disabled men and women. The documents presented the men as victims of their disability, victims but still strong and abled and the women were presented as accountable of their disability and dependent of means

Exploring Organizational Identity as a Potential Process : A multiple case study on employee-oriented companies

Abildgaard Nielsen, Søren, Köhler, Florian January 2018 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore organizational identity as a potential process.   Design/Methodology/Approach: We applied a qualitative method and followed an inductive approach that was applied to a multiple-in-depth-case study for which we conducted semi-structured interviews with 26 members of two organizations, the Swedish consulting company REACH and the Swiss digital agency WONDROUS. Following a narrative approach, both for structuring the empirical findings, as well as conducting the analysis, we used over 16 hours of interviews to create company narratives and subsequently analyzed them in multiple steps in the fashion of a narrative analysis.   Findings: Based on our empirical findings and the empirical analysis, we developed a conceptualization, the Flux Model. We contribute to the existing body of literature by proposing that the Flux Model visualizes the dynamics of how organizational members socially construct organizational identity on the premise of their own (self-)perceptions. By presenting the different parts of the model and their multiple layers, the process of how organizational identity is continuously becoming is illustrated.   Research Limitations/Implications: The scope of our study is restricted to the two case companies in question. If our abstractions from the cases in form of the Flux Model help to better understand the process of organizing, managers become liberated to make deliberate choices about their organizations’ identities. For research this means an even tighter connection to individual psychology and a deepening of the perspective that organizational identity can not only be viewed as something companies have.   Originality/Value: Out of skepticism towards the usefulness of viewing organizational identity as a process, we applied a symbolic interpretivist perspective and allowed for the possibility that we might not find a process after all. The primary value of this study we believe to be found in the extensive presentation of empirical data, together with our narrative analysis and our conceptual contribution (the Flux Model).

Narratives of young people living with a diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME)

Solomons, Wendy January 2016 (has links)
CFS/ME (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) is a distressing and potentially debilitating condition. It can also be understood as a contested condition, surrounded by controversy about its nature, causes and treatment. Previous research indicates that those affected experience this climate of contestation as a troubling and discrediting assault, not only on the nature of their condition, but also on their identities. However, little attention has been paid to the voices of young people living with CFS/ME. This thesis extends a relatively small literature in new directions, focusing a constructionist, discursive narrative lens on the accounts of ten young people (aged 13-18) living with a diagnosis of CFS/ME. Narratives constructed during repeated interviews over a year, and drawing on multimodal materials collected by participants over that period, were analysed for their content, structure and performance, with reference to the local and broader contexts of their production. This analysis demonstrates that teenagers construct rich, multi-layered narratives with the potential to enhance understanding of their situation and broader features of the social world. As they speak of the onset of illness, attempts to live with enduring, unpredictable symptoms and their psychosocial consequences, and (for some) the possibility of 'moving on' from the worst of illness, this analysis throws new light on how young people's narratives can be understood as simultaneously constructing the condition ('M.E.') and the identities of those involved ('me' and others), in ways that engage with, reflect and resist prevailing discourses. It is argued that the discursive contexts of CFS/ME and adolescence raise particular challenges for young people as they try to construct credible narratives that convey the full extent of their difficulties, while resisting stigmatising identities (eg, as 'complaining', 'lazy' or otherwise 'not normal'). This analysis highlights implications for them, their families and those who work professionally with them; and for the ongoing social construction of CFS/ME in young people.

This Doctoral research belongs to the research line "Practices and Formative Processes in Education" of the Graduate Program in Education of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of Sao Paulo State University "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (FCT / UNESP). It starts with the hypothesis that educational designer has fundamental role when proposing education approaches centered on the construction of knowledge, so that the transposition of information transmission practices is not carried out into the context of Distance Education. In view of the complexity involved in the assignments of this professional, the research problem is presented: how the educational designer performance in a context of elaboration and implementation of courses in the distance education modality conceived from the approaches Being Together Virtually (known as EJV) (VALENTE) and Constructionist, Contextualized and Meaningful (known as CCS) (SCHLÜNZEN) can enable that the target audience characteristics, distance education specificities and the objectives of these education approaches to be achieved? Therefore, as general objective, it was sought to conceptualize the educational designer in the context of distance education courses according to the CCS and EJV approaches. To do so, based on a qualitative approach of action-research type, it was studied the elaboration and implementation of a specialization course belonging to the Sao Paulo Network Program of Teacher Training (Redefor) Special and Inclusive Education, in which the researcher acted as educational designer. Selection and collection of data occurred using tools as script files, matrix and agenda, e-mails sent and received between the multidisciplinary team, teacher authors, specialist and coordination, as well as the proposed activities and production of the students in the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Moodle. With predefined categories of analysis, the data were analyzed from confrontation between what was initially thought by the teacher author and the final result after the interventions carried out and, also, the identification of elements from the CCS and EJV approaches in the course pedagogical proposal and in the students’ production. It was observed that the educational designer contributed to establish the technological and pedagogical knowledge base of the content (TPACK) (MISHRA; KOEHLER) from articulation of knowledge and actions of the pedagogical and multidisciplinary teams, and also, the pedagogical proposal of the course allowed the students to construct products, through contextualized activities, with a high level of interaction and effective pedagogical mediation, allowing thereby, the construction of knowledge insofar as they were attributing meaning to the concepts seized.

This doctoral thesis is linked to the research line: Formative Processes, Teaching and Learning of the Post-Graduation Program in Education of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Sao Paulo State University "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (UNESP), campus of Presidente Prudente/SP. The research is developed having as a starting point the reality lived by the society due to the intense and dynamic process of changes, caused especially by the strong technological and scientific evolution, that overly impacts people's life. In education, in turn, the situation is no different. Therefore, the research is developed surrounding these challenges such as students 'lack of interest in formal educational institutions, the need for better flexibility, optimization of time and higher quality of learning for university students. To this end, the educational scenario should be reviewed, adapting itself to the new perspectives of knowledge construction, implementing changes related to the use of technologies, differentiated methodologies and the protagonist role of students in their own learning. Given the above, UNESP has created the Innovative Graduation Program (known as PGI) with actions aimed at the continued education of its teachers. For this purpose, it offered a training course called "Construction of Didactic-Pedagogical Materials for E-Learning, M-Learning and B-Learning" selected for analysis due to its alignment with the theoretical referential adopted in this study. Therefore, the thesis has as its focus the factors considered essential for the innovation in education, starting from the premise that the student's protagonist role can be intensified with the use of Active Methodologies. It is worth highlighting the innovation in Higher Education, the link with E-Learning, M-Learning and B-Learning, the use of Digital Information and Communication Technologies in a Constructionist, Contextualized and Significant Approach (known as CCS) and, the inclusion of students in an active posture, where he is the protagonist of his knowledge construction. Therefore, this research, based on a qualitative approach, established as general objective: to investigate, within the PGI framework, the contributions of the formative process proposed in didactic-pedagogical ways for the development of innovative actions in Higher Education. The purpose of the course was to encourage the use of distance learning and Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and, strategies of E-Learning, M-Learning and B-Learning, that is, the adoption of hybrid education (B- Learning), seen as a component of great relevance for change and innovation in the current educational scenario. Data collection, selection and analysis were divided into three phases and three different ways. They were done through the observation of activities proposed in the VLE and in what was proposed in the PGI, from its confrontation with the planning, construction and execution of the course, in addition to interviews made with course participants. The research revealed that innovative actions were provided to course participants, especially through understanding that this teacher training was based on the assumptions of the CCS approach. To conclude, our understanding is that for the continuous development of innovative mindsets, it is also necessary to provide permanent training processes to teachers, made in a CCS approach, to ensure that they, as well as their students, can experience being protagonists in the knowledge construction process.

This doctoral research is bound to the Graduate Program in Education of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the São Paulo State University "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (FCT / Unesp), Campus of Presidente Prudente-SP, in the research line "Formative Processes, Teaching and Learning", in the areas of Distance Education (D-Learning) and Teacher Training. The great advance of the Digital Technologies of Information and Communication (DTIC) has caused fullness changes in all areas of science. In Education there is a widespread adoption and use of Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), which can contribute to the use of DTIC, active learning methodologies and favoring the Constructionist, Contextualized and Significative (CCS) approach. The CCS approach is that in which student uses technology as an instrument to produce something that arise in your own experience and reality, and when he came across with curricular concepts, teacher acts as mediator to help him to formalize these concepts. In these context, the Internet and mobile devices started to be used on a growing scale and have contributed to the proliferation of large amounts of data in digital format, which in turn are little used to generate the knowledge discovery in educational contexts. It's where stands out the area of Educational Data Mining (EDM), which consists in the development of methods and techniques designed to exploit such digital data to better understand students behavior's and in what conditions they learn. Thus, "how to use EDM techniques to identify evidence of CCS approach in hybrid mode courses?" it's the issue that guides this doctoral research, because even qualified teachers for teaching activities often lack sufficient proficiency in the use of computational resources, such as programming languages and database tools, much less regarding the use of data mining techniques applied to educational contexts. The research made use of both quantitative and qualitative approach, based on the methodological design Ex Post Facto or non-experimental research, once this study was conducted after the completion of the facts. To answer the leading questions, the Special Education course in the Inclusive Perspective of the Redefor / Unesp program was analyzed from the CCS categories (student's context, learning spiral and cycle of actions, learning network, teacher role and concepts formalization) defined according to the indications of Schlünzen (2000; 2015), Santos (2015) and Valente (2005). It was used the data mining model proposed by Fayad, Piatetsky-Shapiro and Smyth (1996) and the phases that consume most repetitive effort allowed the mapping of patterns to be followed, and to minimize efforts and to maximize results, was proposed and implemented a software prototype named EDMXP (Educational Data Mining eXPeriment) in Java programming language to support selection, preprocessing, mining and data analysis activities. The data mining tasks used were clustering and classification tasks represented by the Simple KMeans, VSM and J48 algorithms. The results were compiled in a language that enables Education professionals to better understand results (tables and graphs), as well as a dashboard of performance indicators. Finally, it was possible to verify that EDM can be a transforming factor in Education from the moment that allows decisions based on data and facts, and not only in an intuitive way or by lived experiences. It represents, therefore, a new way of doing and thinking Education.
