Neumovaný breviář Pu VI E 4c z kláštera sv. Jiří / Neumed Breviary Pu VI E 4c from St. George's Monastery

Seifertová, Tereza January 2012 (has links)
The master thesis focuses on a neumed breviary, which presently resides in the Czech National Library under the signature VI.E.4c. The source, originally from the library of women's Benedictine monastery of St. George at the Prague Castle, dates from the middle of 12th century and is the oldest neumed manuscript from the convent. However, it is not clear where it was created and for whom. The breviary might have been intended for the convent from the beginning or got to its library later. Therefore, the main aim of this work is to find out the provenance of the codex. The first chapter deals with the physical description of the manuscript. Especially the musical-palaeographic aspects are inspected, both the original and younger (written usually in margins). The newly discovered fragment XXIV.A.65, which originally belonged to the breviary, is also investigated. With the use of these aspects, the possibilities of the source's provenance are specified. The content of the breviary is examined in the second chapter. The single sections of the manuscript are described: calendar, tonary, Commune Sanctorum and the liturgical year itself. The chapter also mentions some of the typical specifics, which appearred during the work at the musical-liturgical index of the third and fourth section of the breviary,...

Of Iberic practice and custom, the nun-lovers or galanes de monjas were men dedicated to fooling around with nuns. In the Portuguese America, the topic was addressed by the poet who later became the main representative of such theme: Gregório de Matos was a polemic figure of the 17th century, who traversed through the Portuguese-Brazilian territories and ventured into the sinuous ways of sexual relations with nuns by the lens of his persona. The involvement with the religious women of the Convent Odivelas, in Portugal, and later the Convent of Santa Clara do Desterro, in Bahia, are feats admitted by the author revealing the pleasure of profaning the sacred whilst conquering the love of a joyful freirinha, as the poet named the nuns of the clarissan convent in Bahia. His works reflected how the frigid wheels, drains and bars of these institutions where accomplices of deviant behaviors from nuns who, moved by their most intimate desires, had relations with both secular and clergy people. Even though having conversations with his muse was allowed, it was not enough. After obtaining her consent, a series of obstacles emerged to be overcome by the valiant warrior-lover, facing competitors, tantrums, betrayals, slander, the need for luxurious gifts and other challenges that the nuns proposed. Among the affairs listed by the poet, inarguably the most prolific for his poetries was the one dedicated to the nun Mariana do Sacramento.

Cencic, Mônica Aparecida Pinto 07 October 2009 (has links)
On this dissertation, I present an edition of 122 documents in which most of them are manuscripts that belong to the Archive of Largo São Francisco Law School from São Paulo University. The time cut for this paper is about a break between 1827 and 1829, when the first years of the law course in São Paulo are considered. The documents show the way things worked in Academia de Sciencias Juridicas (Juridical Sciences Academy), which is now Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de São Paulo (Law School from São Paulo University) when there were no models to manage a college in Brazil yet. Most part of the documents were sent by the Empire Ministry in Rio de Janeiro to the newborn law course in São Paulo. They are about the choice and cession of São Francisco Convent from São Paulo Province for the implementation of the Academia (Academy), the everyday management of the School, and other issues evolving the staff, the teachers and the students. Such records are presented mostly as warnings, but there are also some official letters, certificates, petitions, applications, inventories, notes and lists. Among the warnings, there are letters between Joze Clemente Pereira, the empire minister and the first headmaster of the course, José Arouche de Toledo Rendon, which are about the hiring of the first employees, the renovation of the convent for the beginning of the school year, the stay of Franciscans in the convent for the whole year of 1828 and the constant disagreements coming from spontaneous cession of the establishment, besides other matters related to the beginning of the law school in Brazil. I chose the semi diplomatic edition, followed by mechanic copies of the documents, for letting them to be accessible for general readers and researchers. This way, it doesnt only contribute to philological and Portuguese language researches, but also for other areas that are interested in the social history of São Paulo City in the XIX century.

Fragmentum praebendarum. Komentovaná kritická edice a překlad rukopisu svatojiřských kanovníků ze 14. století / Fragmentum praebendarum. Commented critical edition and translation of the manuscript of the canons of St. George in Prague from the 14th century

Pacovský, Karel January 2018 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the manuscript of the canons of St. George's church in Prague Castle from the 14th century called Fragmentum praebendarum (Prague, Czech National Library, sign. XIII A 2). The manuscript mentions many people related to St. George's church, contains many details about its liturgical life, and is especially focused on St. George's canons, their duties, and their benefices. Since the 18th century, the manuscript has been considered a valuable source for the history of St. George's church and the adjoining convent of Benedictine nuns, but so far, it has only been available in an edition from 1785. The new edition of the codex and its first Czech translation helps to identify many mentioned persons and places, as well as cited quotes. Together with its physical description and content analysis it broadens our knowledge about the origin of this manuscript, about the life in St. George's church during later Middle Ages and about the relationship between the male community of St. George's canons and the female convent of Benedictine nuns that together shared this church in the royal residence of Prague.

'How shall we sing the song of the Lord in a strange land?' : English Catholic music after the Reformation to 1700 : a study of institutions in Continental Europe

Cichy, Andrew Stefan January 2014 (has links)
Research on English Catholic Music after the Reformation has focused almost entirely on a small number of Catholic composers and households in England. The music of the English Catholic colleges, convents, monasteries and seminaries that were established in Continental Europe, however, has been almost entirely overlooked. The chief aim of this thesis is to reconstruct the musical practices of these institutions from the Reformation until 1700, in order to arrive at a clearer understanding of the nature of music in the post-Reformation English Catholic community. To this end, four institutions have been selected to serve as case studies: 1. The Secular English College, Douai. 2. St Alban’s College, Valladolid. 3. The Benedictine Monastery of Our Lady of the Assumption, Brussels. 4. The Augustinian Monastery of Our Lady of Nazareth, Bruges. The music of these institutions is evaluated in two ways: firstly, as a means of constructing, reflecting and forming English Catholic identity, and secondly, in terms of the range of influences (both English and Continental) that shaped its stylistic development. The thesis concludes that as a result of the peculiarly domestic nature of religious practice among Catholics in England, and interactions with Continental Catholicism, the aesthetic and ideological bases for English Catholic music were markedly different from those of its Protestant counterpart. The marked influence of Italianate styles on the sacred music of English Catholic composers and institutions in exile demonstrates a simultaneous process of cultural alignment with the aesthetic and theological principles of the Counter-Reformation, and dissociation from those of English Protestantism. Finally, it is clear that music was an important formational tool in both the seminaries and convents, where it shaped both community and self-identity, and created affinities with the locales in which these institutions were situated – although it is also clear that these uses of music had the potential to conflict.
