Bosí Augustiniáni v Čechách jako zadavatelé uměleckých děl od roku 1623 do reforem Josefa II. / Importance of discalced Augustinians as the art submitters in Bohemia between year 1623 and Joseph's II. reforms

Šmilauerová, Adéla January 2016 (has links)
The introductory chapter fills a completely blank space concerning the history, organisation and spirituality of the Order of the Discalced Augustinians in the Czech context. The existing literature has so far only briefly outlined this topic; however, it cannot be explored with no knowledge of the 20th -century professional Italian research works or the preserved resources produced by the General Curia in Rome and the 18th century literature of the Order. The thesis also provides a general overview of the activities of the Czech mon asteries of the Discalced Augustinians in the period context, also reflecting the in fluence of the Order on the spiritual and cultural life of the laymen, an influence which, as regards the monastery in Lnare, extends into the early 20th century. The extant resources have helped to describe relations between the members of the Order and the outside world, be it the links to the local clergy or laymen, espe cially burghers and nobility or its dependants. The relationship between the famil ies who financed the foundation of the two latest monasteries (Lnare and Lysa nad Labem) and the monastic community is the focus of specific attention. The monas tery benefactors who financed specific artworks were also recruited from these contacts. In return, they could hope to be...

Kapucínský řád a společnost v Čechách a na Moravě v letech 1618-1673 / Capuchin Order and Society in Bohemia and Moravia between 1618- 1673

Brčák, Marek January 2013 (has links)
This master thesis deals with the history of the Capuchin order in Czech-Moravian territory during 1618-1673. The Czech-Austrian Capuchin province was established in 1618 and in 1673 was divided into Czech and Austrian part which led to formation of two individual provinces of the Capuchin order. The first chapter of the master thesis introduces the review of existing literature that deals with this theme and the characterization of sources. This chapter is focused on narrative sources that are fundamental for this master thesis. In the second chapter, the Capuchin order is characterized (with the emphasis on the structure and formation) and its history, because this information explains the behaviour of Capuchins in the Czech-Moravian territory. We could not omit the Franciscan order and its history in this passage, because these also influenced the orientation and spirituality of the Capuchin order. The whole history of the Czech-Austrian Capuchin province is comprised in the third chapter. This period witnessed a significant progress in admission of new members of the Capuchin order. We are interested in the national origin of the members and their social stratification. Further, we deal with the impact of the Thirty Years War on the order in the specified region. The reasons of founding new...

Konvent dominikánek na Starém Městě pražském v raném novověku. Ženská řeholní komunita a její vztahy k diecézním, řádovým a světským autoritám. / The convent of dominican sisters in The Old Town of Prague in the early modern era. The woman monastic community and its relations to the diocesan, religious and temporal authorities.

Walter, Pavel January 2015 (has links)
The diploma thesis describes the development of St. Anne and St. Lawrence Dominican convents in The Old Town of Prague during early modern period (mainly in the 17th and the 18th centuries). Both the indoor life and contacts with outside world are included in the description. Only three topics of the above-mentioned specialization could be seamlessly elaborated due to fragmentary sources. The introduction and first three chapters constitute a summary of sources and literature. Furthermore, they chronologically depict the history of the Dominican order and the particular convents. The fourth chapter deals with the relationship between the nuns and their dependants in the municipality of Radlice. The system of servile taxes withdrawals and visitations of the monastic farms are emphasized. The chapter finally records a concrete discord between the convent and Barbora Wlaška in the 16th century. The fifth chapter focuses on baroque sermon that were held during ceremonies of admission aspirants among the other nuns. The preachments were analyzed in light of their contents and spiritual thoughts. The last chapter studies the performance of the archiepiscopal authority to the convents in the 18th century and the relationships between the Dominican nuns and aristocratic families or bourgeoisie in the...

Kapucínský řád a jeho působení v Čechách a na Moravě (1673-1783). / Capuchin Order and its activities in Bohemia and Moravia between 1673-1783.

Brčák, Marek January 2019 (has links)
Full Name: Marek Brčák Thesis title: Capuchin Order and its activities in Bohemia and Moravia between 1673-1783 Abstract This dissertation deals with the history of the Capuchin order in Czech-Moravian territory during 1673-1783. The year of the establishment of the Czech-Moravian Capuchin province is 1673. In 1783, this province was divided into a Czech and a Moravian province; this led to the establishment of two new independent provinces of the Capuchin order. At the same time the upper time limit coincided with the religious reforms of Joseph II., which had essential influence on activities of the Capuchin order. The first chapter introduces a review of the existing secondary literature that deals with this theme, analysing and explaining the methodology used in the thesis. The second chapter describes historiography and archival databases that existed in the Czech-Moravian Capuchin province, which contributed to the formation of collective memory. This chapter also portrays concrete institutions which keep records in their archives on the history of the Capuchin order. The history of the Czech-Austrian Capuchin province is covered in the third chapter. This period witnessed significant progress in admission of new members to the Capuchin order; therefore the thesis examines the national origin of the...

'Seek the Eyes of Mary': A Widow and a Virgin's Illuminating Invitation

Kryscynski, Kristina Gayle Heiss 09 April 2020 (has links)
A deep visual analysis of Ludovico Carracci’s 1588 Madonna and Child, Angels, and Saints Francis, Dominic, Mary Magdalene and the Donor Cecilia Bargellini Boncompagni with an emphasis on the role of the patron, the significance of the locality, and the visual semiotics of the Virgin Mary’s gaze in prompting conversion in the repentant prostitutes of the Carmelite convertite convent associated with Ss. Filippo and Giacomo in Bologna, Italy. Including a commentary on contemporary social expectations of modest behavior and the painting’s deliberate incorporation of inappropriate female behavior towards a religious purpose. A discussion of uniquely Carmelite iconography, the use of Ignatian mental prayer in convents, and self-determination in imagery by a Bolognese aristocratic woman.

The girls who spoke for God: vocation and discernment in seventeenth-century France

Kort, Meghan 30 August 2016 (has links)
During the seventeenth century, the Catholic Reformation sparked unprecedented growth in girls' educational opportunities with the opening of over five hundred new teaching convents. Yet, the active role girls played in these institutional and social changes is often overlooked. Even though girls' autobiographical writing from the seventeenth century is rare, prescriptive, educational, and biographical sources from convent schools are rich in details about girls' lives and vocational discernment. Upon leaving school, girls were encouraged to take either marriage or religious vows. Since orthodox Catholicism taught that salvation could only be received if one's life reflected God's will this decision was weighty. In fact, reformed convents tested their entrants to ensure that their vocations were freely chosen and not forced. Seventeenth-century girls' educational theorists shared this concern, and while they debated the details of curriculum, they agreed that only girls had the authority to articulate their own God-given vocations. At convent schools, girls encountered both models of female domesticity and women who were dedicated to religious life. The repeated affirmation of both of these paths created an atmosphere in which girls could legitimately choose either. Furthermore, the memories of vocational discernment recorded in nuns' lives offer evidence of plausible ways in which girls proved their callings to their communities. Focusing on religious vocation reveals how girls in the seventeenth century actively articulated their ideas, impacted their societies, and challenged adult authority. / Graduate / 2017-08-25 / 0330 / 0335 / 0520 / mjkort@uvic.ca

Historical-archaeology in the ancient claustro del noviciado, present-day Casa de la columna, of Santo Domingo convent in Lima / Investigaciones histórico-arqueológicas en el antiguo claustro del noviciado, hoy Casa de la Columna, del convento de Santo Domingo de Lima

Coello Rodríguez, Antonio 10 April 2018 (has links)
This article is a summary of the archaeological excavations carried out inside the old cloister of the «Convent of Santo Domingo de Lima», known today as «La Casa de la Columna», and located on the second block of the Calle Conde Superunda. These excavations were part of a multidisciplinary project whose main objective was to restore, and in some cases consolidate, the original structures that were part of the old convent (i.e., the cloister’s archway and entrance). Today La Casa de la Columna is a densely populated habitation with more than 200 residents. After this cloister was turned into a tenement house towards the second half of century XIX, the former priests’ cells came to house several people including whole families who altered the place’s original appearance little by little over time. These changes involve the addition of elements characteristic of the lifestyle of the inhabitants’ new society, which are quite different from those of the place’s previous religious function.
