An Algorithm to Generate Two-Dimensional Drawings of Conway Algebraic Knots

The problem of finding an efficient algorithm to create a two-dimensional embedding of a knot diagram is not an easy one. Typically, knots with a large number of crossings will not nicely generate two-dimensional drawings. This thesis presents an efficient algorithm to generate a knot and to create a nice two-dimensional embedding of the knot. For the purpose of this thesis a drawing is “nice” if the number of tangles in the diagram consisting of half-twists is minimal. More specifically, the algorithm generates prime, alternating Conway algebraic knots in O(n) time where n is the number of crossings in the knot, and it derives a precise representation of the knot’s nice drawing in O(n) time (The rendering of the drawing is not O(n).). Central to the algorithm is a special type of rooted binary tree which represents a distinct prime, alternating Conway algebraic knot. Each leaf in the tree represents a crossing in the knot. The algorithm first generates the tree and then modifies such a tree repeatedly to reduce the number of its leaves while ensuring that the knot type associated with the tree is not modified. The result of the algorithm is a tree (for the knot) with a minimum number of leaves. This minimum tree is the basis of deriving a 4-regular plane map which represents the knot embedding and to finally draw the knot’s diagram.

Over- and Under-dispersed Crash Data: Comparing the Conway-Maxwell-Poisson and Double-Poisson Distributions

In traffic safety analysis, a large number of distributions have been proposed to analyze motor vehicle crashes. Among those distributions, the traditional Poisson and Negative Binomial (NB) distributions have been the most commonly used. Although the Poisson and NB models possess desirable statistical properties, their application on modeling motor vehicle crashes are associated with limitations. In practice, traffic crash data are often over-dispersed. On rare occasions, they have shown to be under-dispersed. The over-dispersed and under-dispersed data can lead to the inconsistent standard errors of parameter estimates using the traditional Poisson distribution. Although the NB has been found to be able to model over-dispersed data, it cannot handle under-dispersed data. Among those distributions proposed to handle over-dispersed and under-dispersed datasets, the Conway-Maxwell-Poisson (COM-Poisson) and double Poisson (DP) distributions are particularly noteworthy. The DP distribution and its generalized linear model (GLM) framework has seldom been investigated and applied since its first introduction 25 years ago. The objectives of this study are to: 1) examine the applicability of the DP distribution and its regression model for analyzing crash data characterized by over- and under-dispersion, and 2) compare the performances of the DP distribution and DP GLM with those of the COM-Poisson distribution and COM-Poisson GLM in terms of goodness-of-fit (GOF) and theoretical soundness. All the DP GLMs in this study were developed based on the approximate probability mass function (PMF) of the DP distribution. Based on the simulated data, it was found that the COM-Poisson distribution performed better than the DP distribution for all nine mean-dispersion scenarios and that the DP distribution worked better for high mean scenarios independent of the type of dispersion. Using two over-dispersed empirical datasets, the results demonstrated that the DP GLM fitted the over-dispersed data almost the same as the NB model and COM-Poisson GLM. With the use of the under-dispersed empirical crash data, it was found that the overall performance of the DP GLM was much better than that of the COM-Poisson GLM in handling the under-dispersed crash data. Furthermore, it was found that the mathematics to manipulate the DP GLM was much easier than for the COM-Poisson GLM and that the DP GLM always gave smaller standard errors for the estimated coefficients.

John Horton Conway: The Man and His Knot Theory

He contributed to number theory with his development of the surreal numbers. His Game of Life earned him long-lasting fame. He contributed to knot theory with his developments of the Conway polynomial, Conway sphere, and Conway notation.

Recovering Matter’s “Most Noble Attribute:” Panpsychist-Materialist Monism in Margaret Cavendish, Anne Conway, and 17th-Century English Thought

This dissertation offers a new interpretation of the metaphysics of two seventeenth-century women philosophers – Margaret Cavendish (1623–1673) and Anne Conway (1631–1679) – and brings to light an unnoticed tradition in seventeenth-century philosophy. I argue that both Cavendish and Conway can be understood as panpsychist-materialist monists: despite their other differences, they agree that there is one kind of substance in nature or creation, and that the single sort of substance always displays material features and mental capacities. Further, I propose that Cavendish and Conway are joined by the physician Francis Glisson (1597–1677) and the poet John Milton (1608–1674) as examples of a distinct panpsychist-materialist tendency in early modern England. ‘Panpsychist-materialist monism’ may at first seem too clunky to serve as the moniker of a movement, but it earns its keep by accurately capturing three elements of the figures’ systems that, when studied together as a group of related commitments, reveal the philosophical significance of each person’s views. My reading therefore bears on the project of interpreting Cavendish and Conway on their own terms and changes the way their context should be understood. Moreover, to the extent that contemporary philosophers of mind draw on philosophers from history in the formulation of their current views, the work presented in this dissertation stands to make a difference in present-day philosophy as well.

The terraces of the Conway Coast, North Canterbury: Geomorphology, sedimentary facies and sequence stratigraphy

A basin analysis was conducted at the Conway Flat coast (Marlborough Fault Zone, South Island, New Zealand) to investigate the interaction of regional and local structure in a transpressional plate boundary and its control on basin formation. A multi-tiered approach has been employed involving: (i) detailed analysis of sedimentary deposits; (ii) geomorphic mapping of terraces, fault traces and lineaments; (iii) dating of deposits by 14C and OSL and (iv) the integration of data to form a basin-synthesis in a sequence stratigraphy framework. A complex thrust fault zone (the Hawkswood Thrust Fault Zone), originating at the hinge of the thrust-cored Hawkswood anticline, is interpreted to be a result of west-dipping thrust faults joining at depth with the Hundalee Fault and propagating eastwards. The faults uplift and dissect alluvial fans to form terraces along the Conway Flat coast that provide the necessary relief to form the fan deltas. These terrace/fan surfaces are ~9 km long and ~3 km wide, composite features, with their upper parts representing sub-aerial alluvial fans. These grade into delta plains of Quaternary Gilbert-style fan deltas. Uplift and incision have created excellent 3D views of the underlying Gilbert-style fan delta complexes from topsets to prodelta deposits. Erosive contacts between the Medina, Rafa, Ngaroma and modern Conway fan delta deposits, coupled with changes in terrace elevations allow an understanding of the development of multiple inset terraces along the Conway Flat coast. These terraces are divided into five stages of evolution based on variations in sedimentary facies and geomorphic mapping: Stage I involves the uplift of the Hawkswood Range and subsequent increased sedimentation rate such that alluvial fans prograded to the sea to form the Medina fan delta Terrace. Stage II began with a period of incision, from lowering sea level or changes in the uplift and sedimentation rate and continued with the deposition of the Dawn and Upham fan deltas. Stage III starts with the incision of the Rafa Terrace and deposition of aggradational terraces in the upper reaches. Stage IV initiated by a period of incision followed by deposition of estuarine facies at ~8ka and Stage V began with a period of incision and continues today with the infilling of the incised valley by the modern fan delta of the Conway River and its continued progradation. New dates from within the Gilbert-type fan deltas along the Conway Flat coast are presented, using OSL and 14C dating techniques. Faulting at the Conway Flat coast began ~ 94 ka, based on the development of the Medina Terrace fan delta with uplift rates ~1.38~1.42 m/ka. The interplay of tectonics and sea level fluctuations continued as the ~79 ka Rafa Terrace fan deltas were created, with uplift rates calculated at ~1.39 m/ka. Detailed 14C ages from paleoforest (~8.4-~6.4 ka) in the Ngaroma Terrace and from the mouths of smaller streams have established uplift rates during the Holocene ~1-3 m/ka, depending on sea level.

The roles of the cathedral in the modern English Church

A cathedral of the Church of England is the seat of the bishop and a centre of worship and mission. The history of this institution is followed from the English Reformation, which it survived, through to the Commonwealth, which it did not. Restored on the return of the monarchy, it then survived with little further trouble until the nineteenth century, when a lot of its income was diverted to the provision of churches and ministers for the populous urban and industrialised areas, which the Church could not fund in any other way. It was the subject of investigation by two Royal Commissions in the nineteenth century and three church-inspired commissions in the twentieth. These commissions stressed the links that should exist between cathedral, bishop and diocese, which the nineteenth century diocesan revival also encouraged, and suggested changes in instruments of governance to achieve this. Some proposals came to nothing, but others were brought into law. Unlike the Roman Catholic cathedral, the Anglican one never lost its autonomy. The religious situation in Britain today is considered in the light of some contemporary sociology and psychology, and it is recognised that the continued decline in the fortunes of the Church is tied up with the massive subjective turn which characterises contemporary culture. The cathedral has not shared the mistrust which faces the Church, and its various roles are discussed in the light of its continued hold on public affection. The conclusions reached are that, although the cathedral now has strong links with bishop and diocese, it should retain its independence within relationships of interdependence with them, to enable it to harness the popularity which it enjoys to remain a centre of worship, but primarily to concentrate on being a centre of mission. Appropriate ways of achieving that are discussed.

It reports findings from field investigation that examined and inventoried landscape features such as stone retaining walls, treadway material, bridges and causeways, and water features on both current-use and abandoned trail segments. The site was examined numerous times over a three-month period, with a followup visit one year later. Libraries and other archives were consulted for written and photographic historic documentation, which were analyzed against current conditions.
