Evolving patterns of identity: a visual response to observations of Cook Islands' women and their adornment

George, Kay January 2010 (has links)
This multimedia visual arts project investigates, from a personal perspective, changes in the context of Cook Islands’ women’s adornment. In a modern world, changes in adornment have become disconnected from cultural traditions and so this study explores how over time evolving patterns of adornment are employed by women to identify their place in society. Observations have been drawn from the developing relationship between the researcher and the women in Rarotonga, the Cook Islands’ community where this project took place. These observations are documented explored and articulated primarily through the medium of photography, and principally by way of the snapshot and the portrait. This examination of Cook Islands’ women and their adornment from traditional adornment to the contemporary influences of modern day fashion has further been explored through a visual response to the relationships between the women and the layers of their adornment. This visual arts project is compromised of an exegesis with a value of 20% and a practical component of 80%.

Development of a low cost cook-off test for assessing the hazard of explosives

Frota, O 24 July 2015 (has links)
A low cost Cook-Off experimental facility has been established to provide a convenient method of ranking explosives in their response to Cook-Off by the time to event under two widely different heating rates and at two different scales. This thesis describes the literature review undertaken as preparation for the purposed study and all the experimental work developed comprising the design of the trials vehicles, the demonstration of their suitability for Fast and Slow Cook-Off trials with confined explosive systems, the preparation of the samples and test vehicles to be trialled as well as the set-up of adequate facilities to undertake the scheduled firing programme. Results are reported for Cook-Off tests on TNT, RDX, and their mixtures. The emphasis of the study is on time to event, and temperature at event, and in addition a qualitative assessment of the violence of the event was made by examination of the fragments of the vehicles, although it is accepted that the relatively light and low cost design of the vehicle may lead to variable confinement in the early stages of the explosive event, and hence to a wider spread of responses than would be obtained from a more heavily confined and more costly vehicle. The test vehicles give results, which differentiate between the various explosives and explosive mixtures trialled and between the scales. More experiments are required to establish the reproducibility of the measurements. The design of the equipment makes this a relatively inexpensive undertaking. The experiment was modelled using published kinetic data, but the calculated time to event differed from that observed to different extents at the two scales. It is hypothesised that the mechanism may change over the prolonged heat soaks and that quantitative scaling is not possible with the available information. Further work is also suggested using a different type of Cook-Off test vehicle, which will in our opinion reduce even further the cost of Cook-Off testing, due to reduction in man-hours of preparation involved and manufacture cost of the Cook-Off test vehicles, and consequently of ranking of explosives.

Changing Portrayals of Captain James Cook in Hawaiian Education

Straub, Christopher Aaron 01 December 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This paper covers the portrayals of Captain James Cook within Hawaiian education. It begins by providing a backdrop to early European portrayals of Captain Cook and then proceeds to investigate how these portrayals changed as they were incorporated into Hawaiian textbooks. The paper then continues to illustrate the changes made in Cook’s portrayal within Hawaiian textbooks and how these changes coincide with the prevailing interests of the eras in which the authors wrote them.

CALIBRATION OF THE JOHNSON-COOK FAILURE PARAMETERS AS THE CHIP SEPARATION CRITERION IN THE MODELLING OF THE ORTHOGONAL METAL CUTTING PROCESS

Wang, Keyan January 2016 (has links)
The finite element analysis (FEA) is a numerical method widely used to predict the metal-cutting performance in both academic and industrial studies, avoiding the high expense and time consumption of experimental methods. The problem is how to calibrate reliable fracture-parameters as chip-separation criterion are implemented into FEA modelling. This thesis introduces a calibration method of the Johnson-Cook fracture parameters used in the orthogonal metal cutting modelling with a positive rake angle for AISI 1045 steel. These fracture parameters were obtained based on a set of quasi-static tensile tests, with smooth and pre-notched round bars at room temperature and elevated temperatures. The fracture parameters were validated by low- and high-strain rate simulations corresponding to tensile tests and orthogonal metal-cutting processes respectively in ABAQUS/Explicit. Compared to literature calibration methods, this method is simpler, less expensive but valid. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)
