Romedenne, Marie Michelle 10 October 2018 (has links)
Pellets of boron carbide, B4C, enclosed in AIM1 (15Cr-15Ni-0.4Ti) stainless steel tubes are constitutive materials of the control rods in the future French Advanced Sodium Technological Reactor for Industrial Demonstration (ASTRID). During reactor operation, the B4C pellets are immersed in liquid sodium in the temperature range 773-873 K. Based on the feedback from operation of former Sodium Fast Reactors (SFR), the lifetime of the control rods has been shown to be limited by their carburization kinetics. Although, boriding of the steels was observed in out-ofpile studies. In order to increase the lifetime prediction of the aforementioned components in service, detailed information on the chemical interaction between the steel and B4C in liquid sodium is required. As a result, two sets of out-of-pile experiments were conducted: 1. Three stainless steels (AIM1, 316L, EM10) were exposed to highly carburizing sodium (ac > 1) at 773, 873 and 923 K. 2. The same grades were exposed to high purity B4C powder in liquid sodium at 773 and 873 K. The first campaign was performed in order to have a better understanding of the carburization phenomenology and kinetics of the control rods. The extent of carburization was evaluated. A good description of the carburization kinetics was obtained by means of two models and a simulation tool (DICTRA). The limits of the simulation tools were exposed. It was shown that the grain boundary diffusion of carbon had to be taken into account. The second set of experiments was carried out in order to study the system: steel – B4C – Na. A thorough examination of the nature of the chemical interaction was performed. The characterizations were combined with a thermodynamic and kinetic study to propose a carburization and boriding mechanism. The B4C powder dissolved in liquid sodium and reacted with the steels to form a boride layer (MB and M2B) at the surface, borides in the grain boundaries and a carburized zone underneath. The growth kinetics of the boron affected zone was shown to be parabolic. The carburization depth did not evolve between 250 and 3000 h and suggested that this phenomenon occurred during a transient stage.

Efeitos de diferentes diluidores sobre a cinética, membranas, morfologia e cromatina espermáticas durante a refrigeração de sêmen equino / Effects of different extenders on sperm kinetic, membranes, morphology, and chromatin during equine semen cooling

Rodríguez, Shirley Andrea Flórez 28 February 2013 (has links)
To develop the efficiency of cooling semen is the great advantage in the equine reproduction, as according to the equine population to grow up, too increase the demand to market and transport of cooling semen. This experiment was performed to verify the effects of different extenders to equine cooling semen at 5°C on the sperm kinetic, membranes, morphology and chromatin during 12 hours of storage. Were utilized four ejaculates from four stallions of different breeds, collected a week. Immediately after the collection, the in natura semen was evaluated as the sperm movement using the Computer-Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA), integrity of plasma and acrossomal membranes and mitochondrial membrane potential, using the fluorescent probes (PI, H342, FITC-PSA and JC-1, by epifluorescência microscopy), sperm morphology by microscopy of differential interference contrast (DIC) and chromatin denaturation by Toluidine blue. As soon as finished the analyses, the semen was diluted using three different extenders: SMT, skim milk based and Tyrode medium (adapted from PADILLA; FOOTE, 1991), BSAG, extender containing BSA (adapted from GIBB et al., 2011) and SMK, skim milk based (KENNEY et al., 1975; control), following was packed in flasks at 50 x 106sperm/mL concentration and cooling at 5°C in BotuFLEX® (Botupharma, Botucatu-SP) box, during 12 hours. The semen was analyzed 5 minutes after dilution (T0), 4 (T4), 8 (T8) and 12 hours (T12) after cooling about sperm movement, plasma and acrossomal membranes integrity and mitochondrial membrane potential sperm morphology and chromatin denaturation. The statistical analysis was performed using Statistical Analysis System (SAS inst. Inc.) software. To all variables was utilized the analysis of variance (ANOVA). To media comparison was utilized the Tukey method, considering the significant level at 5%. Were observed interactions between times X treatment to majority of sperm kinetic characteristic. Among the found effects of the extenders, it was detached that SMT and SMK were superior to preserve total and progressive motility and percentage of rapid sperm in detriment to BSAG extender. It about the membranes preservation the SMT extender (56.6±18.7%) was significantly superior to SMK (49.6±18.6%), which was superior to BSAG (25.8±14.8%) as percentage of sperm with plasma and acrossomal membranes integrity and high mitochondrial potential (PIAIA). Behavior similar was observed to the plasma membrane integrity and potential mitochondrial membrane percentage. Contrary, The acrossomal membrane was not affected by semen cooling at 5ºC until 12 hours independently of the extender. It was found major percentage of defect total to cooling semen using BSAG (50±12.4%) extender compared to SMT (42.6±11.2%) and SMK (41.8±12.4%). When evaluated the sperm chromatin were not found effect of the cooling time neither of the extenders; however, when compared to in natura semen notice an increase on the percentage of spermatozoa with moderate chromatin denaturation after 12 hours of cooling at 5ºC with BSAG extender. It was concluded that the equine semen cooling at 5ºC change the sperm kinetic oscillating way among extenders during the time until 12 hours. The SMT and SMK extenders are better to preserve the sperm kinetic, membranes integrity and morphology than BSAG extender.

Efeito da adição de gema de ovo no diluente de Kenney para o resfriamento de sêmen ovino / Effect of the addition of egg yolk to the kenney extender for the cooling of ram semen

Francisco Ayres de Oliveira Neto 30 October 2012 (has links)
Among the reproductive biotechniques routinely used in animal production, the artificial insemination (AI) is known to provide a greater gain in genetic improvement programs. The adequate selection of female and especially male productive and reproductive traits is the keystone to maximize the potential of this technique. Semen used for AI can be used fresh diluted or not, chilled and frozen. An essential role is played by semen extenders on volume expansion, allowing not only the fractioning in multiple insemination doses, but also the maintenance of sperm fertilizing potential. Therefore, for semen fractioning, chilling or cryopreservation, extenders are required to be atoxic, must maintain pH and osmolarity compatible to the sperm survival, and should be preferably inexpensive and easy to prepare. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to evaluate chilled ram semen using the Kenney extender (K) of the Kenney extender with egg yolk (KG) for 48 h. Forty ejaculates of four rams were (n=40) were used. Samples were equally divided into two aliquots and extended in K extender and KG extender. Samples were chilled at 10ºC and evaluated immediately after chilling (0h), 24 and 48 h later. These analyses included gross motility (swirl pattern), individual motility and vigor. Functional test analyses such as evaluation of plasma membrane integrity using the eosin-nigrosin staining technique, acrosome integrity using the fast green / bengal rose staining method (POPE, 1991), mitochondrial cytochemical activity evaluation utilizing diaminobenzidine (DAB) staining and assessment of sperm susceptibility to the oxidative stress based the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances after the incubation with ferrous sulphate and ascorbate (TBARS) were performed. In this study, a significant influence of chilling period was found for spermatic motility and vigor dropping from 79.16±1.41 to 40.25±2.55 after 48 hours and from 3.92±0.06 to 2.57±0.10 after 48 hours, respectively. Time also negatively influenced the integrity of plasma and acrosomal membrane (0hr=95.75±0.36, 24hrs=90.69±0.99, 48hrs=86.11±1.45; and 0hr=90.34±0.80, 24hrs=84.33±1.30, 48hrs=76.67±1.69, respectively). Also, during the course of time there was a decrease in mitochondrial activity and an increase in TBARS, with an increase from moment 0 to 48 hrs (807.42 ± 39.22 and 937.76 ± 41.87). It was also found that the medium K had greater values of vigor than the medium KG (p=0.0144), and that the medium K was capable of better preserve mitochondrial activity (P=0.0005). A negative correlation was found between the TBARS concentration with motility and vigor and plasma and acrosomal membrane integrity when samples were stored with the extender K. In the KG extender, the TBARS and DAB III correlations were positive (r=0, 35) indicating that showing that the greater the number of cells with low mitochondrial activity, the higher the TBARS concentration. Also, a negative correlation between the acrosomal integrity variable (ACRO) and TBARS (r=-0, 40; P=0,0001) was found, which demonstrates that the lower the percentage of cells with intact acrosomal, the higher the susceptibility to the oxidative stress. Therefore, results indicated that the K extender was effective in preserve the seminal characteristics of ovine for 48 hours and the addition of egg yolk to kenney extender was not capable of improving such characteristics.

An experimental study of laminarization induced by acceleration and curvature

Jackson, R. Brian 15 June 2012 (has links)
The Generation IV Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR) design is being actively studied in various countries for application due to its inherent passive safe design, higher thermal efficiencies, and proposed capability of providing high temperature process heat. The pebble bed core is one of two core designs used in gas reactors. In the pebble bed core there are mechanisms present which can cause the flow to laminarize, thus reducing its heat transfer effectiveness. Wind tunnel experiments were conducted using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to investigate boundary layer laminarization due to flow acceleration and convex curvature effects. The flow was subject to acceleration and curvature both separately and together and the flow behavior characterized with velocity flow profiles, mean boundary layer parameters, and turbulence quantities. Laminarization was identified and the influence of acceleration and curvature was characterized. / Graduation date: 2013

Study on linking a SuperCritical water-cooled nuclear reactor to a hydrogen production facility

Lukomski, Andrew John 01 July 2011 (has links)
The SuperCritical Water-cooled nuclear Reactor (SCWR) is one of six Generation-IV nuclear-reactor concepts currently being designed. It will operate at pressures of 25 MPa and temperatures up to 625°C. These operating conditions make a SuperCritical Water (SCW) Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) suitable to support thermochemical-based hydrogen production via co-generation. The Copper-Chlorine (Cu‒Cl) cycle is a prospective thermochemical cycle with a maximum temperature requirement of ~530°C and could be linked to an SCW NPP through a piping network. An intermediate Heat eXchanger (HX) is considered as a medium for heat transfer with operating fluids selected to be SCW and SuperHeated Steam (SHS). Thermalhydraulic calculations based on an iterative energy balance procedure are performed for counter-flow double-pipe design concept HXs integrated at several locations on an SCW NPP coolant loop. Using various test cases, design and operating parameters are recommended for detailed future research. In addition, predicted effects of heat transfer enhancement on HX parameters are evaluated considering theoretical improvements from helically-corrugated HX piping. The effects of operating fluid pressure drop are briefly discussed for applicability in future studies. / UOIT

Effects of fuel type on the safety characteristics of a sodium cooled fast reactor

Sumner, Tyler 15 November 2010 (has links)
A series of accident simulations were performed using INL's thermal hydraulics code RELAP5-3D to analyze steady-state and transient behavior of a sodium cooled fast reactor. The reactor chosen for this study was General Electric's S-PRISM, which is a 1,000 MWt pool-type sodium-cooled fast reactor, designed for either an Oxide or Metal fueled core. Once key core characteristics including power profiles, reactivity feedback coefficients and delayed neutron parameters were calculated, S-PRISM was redesigned for a Nitride fueled core to take advantage of the Nitride fuel's high thermal conductivity and melting temperature. Loss of flow, loss of heat sink, loss of power and inadvertent control rod withdrawal accidents were simulated for each core at beginning, middle and end of cycle to determine if one fuel type provides significant safety advantages over the others.

Evaluation of the performance characteristics of a hybrid (dry/wet) induced draft dephlegmator

Anderson, Neil Raymond 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A novel induced draft hybrid (dry/wet) dephlegmator (HDWD) is introduced which can enhance the performance of dry air-cooled condenser systems and a model is developed to simulate its performance. The HDWD consists of two stages of cooling with the steam flow in series and the air flow in parallel through both stages. The first stage consists of downwardly inclined finned tube bundles, similar to conventional air-cooled condenser bundles, and the second stage comprises horizontal bare tube bundles of which the outer surface can selectively be operated dry or wet by spraying it with deluge water. A comparison of the HDWD with other existing and new concepts reveals the significant advantages that this technology has over other technologies. This thesis is a continuation of the work done by Heyns (2008), who introduced a forced draft HDWD and investigated its performance, and Owen (2013), who conducted a parametric investigation on the induced draft HDWD to improve the basic design proposed by Heyns (2008). In his thermo-flow model, Heyns (2008) conducted a thermal analysis assuming equal air flow through both stages and a constant vapor temperature inside the bundles, while Owen (2013) solved the thermal, steam-side pressure drop and draft equations. Both their models make use of empirical correlations by Gaddis & Gnielinski (1985), Zukauskas (1987), Mizushina et al. (1967) and Niitsu et al. (1967) for the performance characteristics. The current model solves the thermal, steam-side pressure drop and draft equations of the HDWD with better accuracy in the steam-side pressure drop calculation. The airside heat and mass transfer and loss coefficient correlations found in literature were found to deviate significantly from each other resulting in uncertainty regarding their suitability. Based on the recommendations by Owen (2013), a bare tube test bundle with 19 mm outer diameter tubes arranged with a triangular pitch of 38 mm is therefore designed, manufactured and tested to investigate the performance characteristics of the bundle experimentally under dry and wet operating conditions to evaluate the correlations from literature. The experimental data confirmed the applicability of the correlations of Gaddis & Gnielinski (1985) and Zukauskas (1987) to predict the dry HDWD performance, since they deviated by 7% and 5% respectively from the experimental data in die applicable range. The heat transfer during wet operation is slightly over estimated within 5% with the correlations of Mizushina et al. (1967) in the range of application. The air-side pressure drop during wet operation is underestimated by 29 to 39% by Niitsu et al. (1967) and the correlation obtained from the experimental results is therefore used in the current model. Using the current HDWD model indicates significant performance enhancement using tubes with a smaller diameter in the delugeable bundle compared to the larger tubes of Heyns (2008) and agrees very well with the model of Owen (2013).

Fuel cycle design and analysis of SABR: subrcritical advanced burner reactor

Sommer, Christopher 11 July 2008 (has links)
Various fuel cycles for a sodium-cooled, subcritical, fast reactor with a fusion neutron source for the transmutation of light water reactor spent fuel have been analyzed. All fuel cycles were 4-batch, and all but one were constrained by a total fuel residence time consistent with a 200 dpa clad and structure materials damage limit. The objective of this study was to achieve greater than 90% burn up of the transuranics from the spent fuel.
