Τζουμανίκας, Δημοσθένης 08 January 2013 (has links)
The present thesis elaborates on the cooperative control of mobile robots. Assuming that one robot has complete knowledge of the desired path the robotic platoon must follow, a coordination control scheme must be created, based on sensor measurements and platoon communication, that generates desired trajectories for each of the members of the platoon. From the moment a single robot has complete knowledge of the path, the coordination scheme is based on leader-follower formation control. A trajectory tracking controller was developed in LabVIEW, while a ZigBee based wireless network was implemented for the platoon communication. To find the relative position of the leader for each robot, a sonar based localization algorithm was created, with position measurements through the robot’s encoders and orientation given from a magnetometer. For each robot seperately, the coordination algorithm was developed, that ensures that the platoon will achieve the original goal.

Teacher perceptions of the pedagogical value of collaborative and cooperative teaching strategies and how teachers use them in the English classroom

Tapper, Johan January 2018 (has links)
Research has shown that language anxiety often hampers performance in spoken communication. However, research has also shown that students experiencing anxiety are helped significantly when teachers adopt cooperative and/or collaborative teaching strategies, two different approaches to group work. This study examines whether or not English teachers in Sweden, working in the context of upper-secondary school, actually perceive these strategies to be as helpful as research shows. It was hypothesized that English teachers employ the two approaches. To explore this topic and hypothesis, three semi-structured interviews were conducted. The results proved the initial hypothesis to be correct since all three teachers who participated use collaborative and cooperative teaching strategies and find them helpful, confirming research findings in other educational contexts; however, collaborative teaching strategies are less common than cooperative strategies. The results are discussed, and it is suggested that it is best if the teachers make the group formations since it facilitates the group work which in turn optimizes the teaching strategies employed and yields improved results for students with language anxiety. The results also showed that it is suggested that teachers not only assess the learners as a whole group, but also the learners individually.

'It's need, not greed' : needs and values at work in an Italian social cooperative

Foley, Ryan Alison January 2018 (has links)
Among the key issues that arise in research of cooperatives are their supposedly hybrid nature and how they are able to balance both social and economic goals. I contend that the concept of 'needs' has become an important differentiating factor for the cooperatives I studied in Emilia Romagna. Placing this concept centrally in an analysis of cooperative practice helps to reveal the interplay between various value systems, reaching beyond arguments of the degeneration of cooperatives or the reproduction of dominant models, which both assume a one-way flow of influence. The recent history of the cooperative movement in Italy shows that these institutions have developed along with changing conceptions of need, supported by broader social movements and value systems. The cooperative network is today of central importance, and seen as an egalitarian means to share ideals and drive local innovation. However, my research shows that the instrumentalisation of the concept of 'need' also naturalises certain aspects of capitalist practice and has consequences for the enactment of other values within the cooperative. For example, in one cooperative I examined, the focus on meeting the members' needs for work was important in justifying a decision to merge with another cooperative despite a decision-making process that was seen as less than entirely democratic. This orientation also justified the use of precarious labour, and the need to protect members' livelihoods helped to justify low pay for internships and municipal job placements, as opposed to furthering the cooperative values of equity and equality. While the cooperative workers desired an element of personal relations, this was sometimes seen to be at odds with the focus on production and the maintenance of jobs. The marketing of more ethical products with reference to their social added value highlighted the central role of individual consumer citizens in bringing about change, which also reinforced divisions within the cooperatives based on who was more or less able to make these choices. In conclusion, I argue that while 'needs', like 'added value', can unite social and economic concepts of value, this also naturalises certain aspects of capitalist practice, particularly in this case where employment emerges as the primary need to be met. This leads me to suggest that the focus on meeting needs, as opposed to focusing on achieving specific ideals such as democracy and equality, may not be as effective to create alternative practice.

PERFORMANCE OF LINEAR DECISION COMBINER FOR PRIMARY USER DETECTION IN COGNITIVE RADIO

Sohul, Munawwar Mahmud 01 August 2011 (has links)
The successful implementation and employment of various cognitive radio services are largely dependent on the spectrum sensing performance of the cognitive radio terminals. Previous works on detection of cognitive radio have suggested the necessity of user cooperation in order to be able to detect at low signal-to-noise ratios experienced in practical situations. This report provides a brief overview of the impact of different fusion strategies on the spectrum hole detection performance of a fusion center in a distributed detection environment. Different decision or detection rule and fusion strategies, like single sensor scenario, counting rule, and linear decision metric, were used to analyze their influence on the spectrum sensing performance of the cognitive radio network. We consider a system of cognitive radio users who cooperate with each other in trying to detect licensed transmissions. Assuming that the cooperating nodes use identical energy detectors, we model the received signals as correlated log-normal random variables and study the problem of fusing the decisions made by the individual nodes. The cooperating radios were assumed to be designed in such a way that they satisfy the interference probability constraint individually. The interference probability constraint was also met at the fusion center. The simulation results strongly suggests that even when the observations at the individual sensors are moderately correlated, it is important not to ignore the correlation between the nodes for fusing the local decisions made by the secondary users. The thesis mainly focuses on the performance measurement of linear decision combiner in detecting primary users in a cognitive radio network.

Impactos do pagamento pela qualidade na cadeia produtiva do leite na região oeste de Santa Catarina / Impacts of payment for quality in the milk production chain in the west region of the Santa Catarina state

Winck, Cesar Augustus January 2012 (has links)
The West region of the Santa Catarina State is responsible for 72.4% of the milk produced in the state and 5.8% of the Brazilian milk and this production is based in family farming, prevailing cooperatives of agricultural production. The quality of the milk is one of the factors that most concerns the whole agribusiness chain of milk in the country and the payment programs for quality emerged as an initiative to encourage the whole chain to invest in improvements in the milk production. Are inserted in this context the Cooperatives “A” and “B” which had among their diverse activities of production and trade, the area of collecting milk among its members. The Cooperative “B” did not have a program of payment for the quality of the milk and the Cooperative “A” implanted its Program of Payment for the Quality of the Milk – PPQL in 2008. The aim of this study was to analyze the socioeconomic and technical impacts of the system of payment for quality over the Productive Chain of the West region of the Santa Catarina State. Through literature review, documentary analysis, questionnaire with producers and interviews with directors, and in the light of the Theory of Decision Making, it was identified that the PPQL was implemented in Cooperative “A” to encourage the producers to increase productions volume and meet the requirements of Instruction 62 (NI 62). After the beginning of the PPQL, the number of milk producers stabilized, there was an increase in the productivity in the farms (33.1%), in the collection of milk by the cooperative (25.3%), in the quality of the milk delivered (reduction of SCC and TBC), besides an improvement in the prices paid per liter to the producers. The milk activity is the main activity in the properties (71.4%) in this area, with an average production of 202.2 liters/day and 14.5 liters/cow in an average area of 18.9 ha. The producers are satisfied with the milk activity (60.7%), they know how the program to pay for quality works (96.4%), reinvest the amounts received of the milk to improve production and consider that the PPQL does not create loyalty because they would deliver milk to the Cooperatives even if the program had not been implemented. It was concluded that the PPQL positively impacted in many social, economical and technical aspects of the Productive Chain, improving the quality of the milk collected and encouraging the cooperative and the producers to invest in the production.

Salvador

Examined whether there were differences in the evolution of syllabic writing among students with intellectual disabilities who participated in the sessions of Cooperative Learning and those in the control group. Also investigated these subjects had proactive behavior during production sessions written in the context of cooperation in the common room. Our study had a qualitative approach, using as a theoretical and methodological basis of the structural organization of the Cooperative Learning supported by Johnson, Johnson (1991, 1997, 1999). The thesis is the theoretical foundation sociointeractionist assumptions of Vygotsky, especially as the importance of interaction and the concept of mediation for learning group students; studies on the written language of psychogenesis countersigned by Ferreiro and Teberosky; and conceptions of the cognitive functioning of people with intellectual disabilities. Participated in the study six subjects with intellectual disabilities, four composing the experimental group and two control groups. ubjects attended three public schools in Fortaleza, in the 2nd and 3rd years of elementary school, and the Educational Service Specialist. The development of the research included nine procedures, including the application of pre-tests and writing post-tests, and performing 35 text production group sessions with each subject of the experimental group, a total of 140 sessions. The data revealed that, in general, subjects in the experimental group developed social skills to deal with and overcome the adversities of social-affective nature existing throughout the sessions and to position themselves in groups as the protagonist of his writing. The results showed that the subjects who participated in the sessions in groups showed behaviors of cooperative learning proposed the meeting, promoting, above all, the emergence of proactive attitudes during the construction of the collective texts, so that these subjects reflect on the system writing. Pre- and post-tests revealed changes of conceptual levels in the written language of the four subjects in the experimental group, and conceptual regressions in writing levels of the subjects in the control group. The data indicate that the cooperative learning constituted a structural approach applicable in the common room with intellectual disabilities with subjects in order to promote the development of psychogenic four study participants. The experience provided an opportunity also to subjects moments of reflection group on the writing system, making inferences and seeking autonomously solutions to your doubts and questions, an aspect that certainly contributes to the evolution of these subjects.

Applications of Cooperative DNA Biosensors

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Cooperativity can be used to manipulate binding affinities of DNA biosensors – improving specificity without sacrificing sensitivity; examples include tentacle probes (TPs) and cooperative primers (CPs). This thesis body of work: (1) used TPs to develop a rapid, low-cost diagnostic for detecting the point mutation leading to Navajo Neurohepatopathy (NNH) and (2) used CPs to amplify a symmetric bowtie-barcoded origami with captured t-cell receptor (TCR) α and β mRNA of a single cell. NNH (affecting 1-in-1600 Navajo babies) is a fatal genetic disorder often caused by 149G>A mutation and is characterized by brain damage and liver disease/failure. Phoenix Children’s Hospital currently uses gene sequencing to identify the 149G>A mutation. While this process is conclusive, there are limitations, as it requires both time (3-4 weeks) and money (>$700). Ultimately, these factors create barriers that can directly impact a patient’s quality of life. Assessment of the developed TP diagnostic, using genomic DNA derived from FFPE patient liver samples, suggests nearly 100% specificity and sensitivity while reducing cost to ~$250 (including cost of labor) and providing a diagnosis within 48 hours. TCR specificity is dependent on V(D)J recombination as well as pairing of the αβ chains. Drs. Schoettle and Blattman have developed a solution in which a bowtie-barcoded origami strand nanostructure is transfected into individual cells of a heterogeneous cell population to capture and protect αβ mRNA. When PCR of the origami template is performed with Vα, X, Vβ, and Y primers, the α and β gene segments cannot be tied back to a barcode – and paired. Assessment of the developed CPs for PCR suggests correct individual amplification using (1) Va + Xcp and (2) Vβ + Ycp primers, whereas combination of all the primers (Va, Xcp, Vb, and Ycp) suggests hybridization of the Vα + Xcp and Vβ + Ycp products due to the origami target symmetry. / Dissertation/Thesis / Third Iteration for Cooperative Primers / Masters Thesis Biomedical Engineering 2018

Valandro, Keila 20 August 2014 (has links)
This research evaluates the contribution of the National School Feeding Programme (PNAE) in creating new markets for local producers to the experience of cooperative COOPAFI the municipality of Capanema, an organization that is a reference in many strategies to access the institutional market to enable the marketing of products of its affiliated farmers, but: Did the PNAE positively impacted the revenue from these farmers? Where and how the farmers to sell their products if they were not associated with the cooperative? Therefore, the first hypothesis is that farmers who access the PNAE in the municipality of Capanema had effective increase income. And the second is that farmers would have no other means to achieve market in the local / regional market in close or similar amount if they were not members. This way will be sought to understand the role of PNAE in strengthening family agriculture and its organizations. In particular, efforts will be made: (1) investigate the reasons for accession and farmers remain in the PNAE and understand how farmers were inserted in PNAE; (2) verify that the PNAE helped improve the living conditions of the population involved; (3) identify which foods purchased by COOPAFI - Capanema in meeting their local / regional demands to understand the motivations and perceptions thereof forward the possibility of generating income not only in the short term; (4) describe the socioeconomic profile of participants PNAE farmers and the influence of this policy on the integration of family farmers in new markets. The survey found an effective increase in revenue among the cooperative, which highlights the role of PNAE in strengthening family farming, however, was not possible to characterize the extreme dependence of farmers to the cooperative, but an insert into new markets that led to the diversification production; increase in the quantity produced; the qualification of the farmer to improve the quality of products; the specialization of labor in the agricultural industry and the knowledge of new marketing channels.
