The rise and fall of the United Housing Foundation : a case study of a cooperative housing resource group

Cull, Elizabeth January 1976 (has links)
The United Housing Foundation (UHF) was founded in 1972 to provide organizational, administrative, and technical advice to housing cooperatives in British Columbia. The purpose of the Foundation was to promote the success of housing cooperatives through the centralization of the substantial knowledge and skills hitherto scattered throughout many small groups in the cooperative sector. Within three and one-half years UHF grew from a grassroots organization under the auspices of the credit union movement to a government funded bureaucracy capable of producing over 1000 cooperative units annually. UHF's apparent success was marred by a bitter conflict be-UHF and its client cooperatives who charged the organization with elitism, insensitivity, and failure to represent cooperatives and by a provincial review of the Foundation and subsequent withholding of funds. These events led to the final collapse of UHF in February 1976. This thesis investigates the role of UHF and concludes that it was a divisive force in the cooperative movement in this province. It was discovered that the local cooperative movement was severely damaged by UHF's frustration of individual cooperatives' needs, provincial interference in UHF policy, and UHF's less-than-professional technical services. The problems of UHF were found to pertain to a large extent to difficulties inherent in the dual nature of cooperative housing — both economic enterprise and . social movement — and the distinct lack of Cooperation among cooperatives. The main recommendations are for self-financing and, therefore, resource groups representative of the cooperatives served, and for the establishment of several types of resource groups to meet the various needs of different housing cooperatives, a recognition that the field is too diverse to be contained within one group. i / Applied Science, Faculty of / Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), School of / Graduate

Till cash management model

Sick, Gordon Arthur January 1976 (has links)
This thesis develops a model for the management of till cash (currency and coin) of a branch for a Vancouver area credit union. The model is developed in two parts. First, a model is estimated to forecast cash demand and then a cash order algorithm is developed. Two statistical models are developed to estimate cash demand. The first employs Box-Jenkins time series techniques. This model fails because the cash flow data are non-stationary, exhibiting both a growth trend and high autocorrelations at large lags. In the second model, a growth trend for real weekly cash flows is first estimated, incorporating an asymptotic capacity constraint. The real cash flow trend is converted to a nominal trend and used as the weight in a linear weighted least squares model for daily cash flows, in which the explanatory variables are dummy variables to indicate days of the week, months of the year, incidence of pay days, etc. The consistency of the resulting forecast model is also discussed. To develop a cash order algorithm, steady state models are first considered. These models are generally based on stationary cash demand, constant delivery lag times for orders and other assumptions that are inappropriate in this till cash management setting. To relax the steady state assumptions a general dynamic programming framework is developed for the cash management model that allows for either penalty costs for cash-outs (cash shortages) or a chance constraint involving the probability of a cash-out. Because of non-stationarity of the cash flows the dynamic program cannot be solved directly, but an approximate solution is obtained using a simulation technique. The resulting algorithm is tested on historical data and the results are discussed briefly. / Business, Sauder School of / Graduate

Um modelo de gestão para redes de cooperação : um estudo de caso em empresas juniores / A model to management enterprises cooperative networks : the case of junior enterprises

Santos, Virgilio Ferreira Marques dos, 1984- 14 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Antonio Batocchio / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Mecanica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-14T09:38:51Z (GMT). / Abstract: The use of the cooperative work in the Núcleo, was chosen because it could potentially have a positive impact in the development and competitiveness of a companies' network. The choice to help the Nucleo was made because the significant row that the "juniors enterprises" has in disseminating low cost technology in Campinas, as the university supplies resources and technology at a break-even cost and a tax free way to the "junior enterprises" the one that wil then try to transfer it to the entrepreneurs of the region that do not have large amounts of money to hire consultants for research and development, and have a small profit. All that is made by the junior enterprises only in order to pay their operational costs and develop its members. Thus, a stronger network will enhance the technological inclusion among the companies in the region and disseminate the concepts and benefits of cooperative work by increasing the region's competitiveness, generating that way more wealth and employment for the population. Finally, the study provides suggestions for the network to adequate in the proposed management model by reinforcing the benefits of cooperation between micro, small and medium enterprises, as well as highlighting the importance of proper management in order to achieve such. It was also suggested in this work, contractual changes, the creation of a code of ethics, creating a participatory strategic planning, the creation of documents that support the action plans and committees and work teams, as well as methods to increase the participation and integration of the network members. / Mestrado / Materiais e Processos de Fabricação / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

The impact of using technology through cooperative learning on learners’ performance on grade 11 circle geometry

Shonhiwa, William January 2020 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / Euclidean geometry was recently re-introduced as a compulsory topic in the Mathematics Curriculum for learners in the Further Education and Training (FET) band in 2012. The diagnostic analysis reports on the National Senior Certificate (NSC) Mathematics Paper 2 examinations since 2014 has repeatedly expressed concern of the poor performance of leaners in proof and reasoning items linked to circle geometry. Various efforts have been made to examine the composition of the curriculum to find ways of motivating learners in the study of circle geometry and enhancing their performance but not much has been realized. The use of technology or cooperative learning approaches for the teaching of geometry is beneficial for pedagogical purposes, particularly for improving learners’ performance in geometry. Hence, this study investigated the impact of using technology through cooperative learning on learners’ performance on grade circle 11 geometry. It was thus an attempt to focus on blending these two teaching methods with an emphasis on the use of technology. The research took place at a Khayelitsha school and the scope of technology was limited to using a mathematical computer programme called Heymath.

Ligands pinceurs mixtes à base d'iminophosphorane pour des systèmes Métal-Ligands coopératifs / Iminophosphorane pincer ligands for cooperative metal-ligand systems

Mazaud, Louis 05 November 2019 (has links)
This research project aims at the synthesis of various types of pincer ligands associating iminophosphorane (P=N) and different nitrogen and phosphorous containing functions. Pincer ligands are tridentate ligands with high degree of synthetic variability allowing a fine tuning of the electronic and steric properties. Cooperativity can also be allowed by introducing specific functions.First chapter deals with the synthesis and characterizations of various ruthenium-hydride complexes which differ by the nature of the ancillary ligands. The obtained complexes and their properties have been compared to their phophine(s)/amine analogues known in the literature, in particular for hydrogenating or dehydrogenating processes. Nevertheless, inthe global economic and ecologic context, ruthenium catalysis does not appear as a sustainable candidate. Therefore iron analogs have also been developed. The modification of the iminophosphorane position led us to synthesize a new family of ligands. Its coordination with a group 11 transition metal such as copper(I) has also been studied. The catalytic properties of those complexes for the Huisgen reaction have also been probed. Finally a new family of pincer ligands containing three coordinating nitrogen atoms with an amidoquinoline moiety has been developed afterwards. Its synthesis is described in this manuscript as well as the complexes formed with group 8 transition metals such as palladium and nickel. An unusual reactivity has been observed when the ligand which includes phenyl substituents on the iminophosphorane reacted with nickel(0).

Alloy-Guided Verification of Cooperative Autonomous Driving Behavior

VanValkenburg, MaryAnn E. 18 May 2020 (has links)
Alloy is a lightweight formal modeling tool that generates instances of a software specification to check properties of the design. This work demonstrates the use of Alloy for the rapid development of autonomous vehicle driving protocols. We contribute two driving protocols: a Normal protocol that represents the unpredictable yet safe driving behavior of typical human drivers, and a Connected protocol that employs connected technology for cooperative autonomous driving. Using five properties that define safe and productive driving actions, we analyze the performance of our protocols in mixed traffic. Lightweight formal modeling is a valuable way to reason about driving protocols early in the development process because it can automate the checking of safety and productivity properties and prevent costly design flaws.

Det kooperativa lärandets påverkan på elevers motivation i matematik : The effects of cooperative learning on students ́ mathematical motivation

Rasmussen, Alexandra, Stanisavljevic, Tijana January 2020 (has links)

Joint Subcarrier Pairing and Resource Allocation for Cognitive Network and Adaptive Relaying Strategy

Soury, Hamza 05 1900 (has links)
Recent measurements show that the spectrum is under-utilized by licensed users in wireless communication. Cognitive radio (CR) has been proposed as a suitable solution to manage the inefficient usage of the spectrum and increase coverage area of wireless networks. The concept is based on allowing a group of secondary users (SUs) to share the unused radio spectrum originally owned by the primary user (PUs). The operation of CR should not cause harmful interference to the PUs. In the other hand, relayed transmission increases the coverage and achievable capacity of communication systems and in particular in CR systems. In fact there are many types of cooperative communications, however the two main ones are decode-and-forward (DAF) and amplify-and-forward (AAF). Adaptive relaying scheme is a relaying technique by which the benefits of the amplifying or decode and forward techniques can be achieved by switching the forwarding technique according to the quality of the signal. In this dissertation, we investigate the power allocation for an adaptive relaying protocol (ARP) scheme in cognitive system by maximizing the end-to-end rate and searching the best carriers pairing distribution. The optimization problem is under the interference and power budget constraints. The simulation results confirm the efficiency of the proposed adaptive relaying protocol in comparison to other relaying techniques, and the consequence of the choice of the pairing strategy.

Enantioselective Transformations Promoted by Cooperative Functions of an Achiral Lewis Acid and a Chiral Lewis Acid:

Cao, Min January 2021 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Masayuki Wasa / Thesis advisor: Amir H. Hoveyda / This dissertation describes the development of cooperative catalyst systems that contain an achiral Lewis acid and a chiral Lewis acid that may have overlapping functions but play their independent roles to promote enantioselective C–C bond formations. Chapter 1 provides a summary of recent advances made in the field of enantioselective cooperative catalysis that served as intellectual foundations for this dissertation research. As it will be discussed in the first chapter, key limitations of cooperative catalysis are: (1) undesirable catalyst deactivation which occurs due to acid/base complexation, (2) requirement for base sensitive pronucleophiles and acid sensitive electrophiles, and (3) poor reaction efficiency. In an effort to overcome these fundamental limitations, we have developed “frustrated” Lewis pair (FLP)-based catalyst systems that consist of potent and sterically encumbered Lewis acids used in pair with bulky N-containing Lewis bases. To demonstrate the potential of the novel FLP catalyst system, we describe our work involving the enantioselective Conia-ene-type cyclization (Chapter 2). In the subsequent chapter (Chapter 3), we discuss the application of the FLP catalysts for enantioselective β-amino C–H functionalization reactions. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2021. / Submitted to: Boston College.
