Mondragón é aqui? cooperativismo e internacionalização / Is Mondragón here? cooperativism and internationalization

No entanto, essa atuação internacional degenera os ideais do cooperativismo, pois, insere a divisão entre capital e trabalho, por meio da ampla utilização e exploração do trabalho assalariado / Abstract: Mondragón Cooperative Corporation (MCC) - through the institutions and rules created since its beginning (in the 1950's) and, since 1990, through the investments in new production plants or alliances with other companies outside Spain, including Brazil - represents nowadays the biggest production cooperative enterprise in the world. As a business, Mondragón's internationalization is a success, however, it exposes a lot of contradictions in relation to the cooperative ideals and principles. We have researched Mondragón's internationalization in a branch installed in Brazil comparing it to its head office in Spain and from this, we considered that MCC internationalization process and the ways it is organized outside the Basque Country is a pragmatic and economical choice, which can enable the competition among the cooperatives in the market, besides keeping and funding its solidary structures in Basque Country. Nevertheless, this international acting degenerates the cooperative ideals since it inserts the division between capital and work, through the wide use and exploration of wage labor / Doutorado / Ciencias Sociais / Doutora em Ciências Sociais

Družstevní a nedružstevní vlastnictví bytu / Cooperative and non-cooperative ownership of a flat

Nováček, Vladimír January 2011 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to analyse a legal enviroment about the ownership of a flat in various forms. The goal is to provide the reader with advantages and disadvantages of each of that forms. The thesis is composed of five main chapters. First two chapters are devoted to a short summary of both the cooperative and non-cooperative form of ownership of a flat. After the evaluation of existing legislation in historical context, the following text is focused on fundamental and also application-often problematic legal institutes. View of the academic and judicial community is provided as well. Chapter three analyzes the procedure of transformation of a housing stock after the velvet revolution in 1989, when the economic and political situation has significantly changed and all legal relations has to adopt to new times. This chapter explains the legal way of transferring flats from cooperative to non-cooperative ownership and conditions to be fulfilled. Chapter four compares these forms of ownership on the background of major legal institutes and highligts or warns on the other hand about challenges arising in connection with the appropriate form of ownership. In the last main chapter, several amendments on new legislature are critically assessed, pros and cons are described and some thoughts are pointed out...

Household, production and the organisation of cooperative labour in Shixini, Transkei

Heron, Gavin Stewart January 1990 (has links)
Incidences of cooperation in agricultural activity are widespread phenomena in low-income third world communities. Two forms of cooperative labour groupings are identified in Shixini, Transkei . These are the work party and the ploughing company. It is argued that different organisational principles operate in the different cooperative forms. Work parties are based on principles of neighbourhood whi Ie ploughing companies are organised around kinship relationships. Factors which determine the principle of organisation are social values; the wider South African economic system; ecology; reciprocity; the constitution and structure of the household; economic differentiation; and labour demand and supply. The dissertation is divided into five chapters. The first is an overview of the Shixini social, economic and political systems. This chapter discusses the influence of the wider South African politico-economic system on agricultural production; the Shixini!Transkei political context; kinship and its relation to social organisation; and the likely effects of an agricultural 'betterment' scheme on the area. The second chapter is an overview of agricultural production in Shixini. It is found that the most significant determinants of agricultural production is the structure and constitution of the household and the way in which stock is distributed in the community. The third and fourth chapters describe and analyse Xhosa work parties and ploughing companies . Argument is lead as to the reasons for the specific organisational principles operating in each case. The penultimate chapter is an analysis of sacred and secular ritual. It is argued that both ritual forms reveal cooperative principles of organisation. Secular ritual dramatises the organisation of work parties while sacred ritual dramatises kinship relationships and so, the organisation of ploughing companies. / KMBT_363

Investigating informal savings as income generating and proverty alleviating tool in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality

Netnou, Ntombomhlaba Salome January 2012 (has links)
The study investigated the informal savings approach as an income-generating and poverty alleviation tool for women. The focus of the study is specifically in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. The purpose of the study was to explore the reasons behind the involvement of women, in particular, to the use of informal savings as a tool for income generation and poverty alleviation. South Africa is characterised by inequitable growth and development, a high degree of poverty, increasing demands and limited resources. It is because of this backdrop that many women in poor communities, both rural and urban, devised brilliant plans to overcome this setback. Women, particularly African women, have for a long time been side-lined in economic decision making activities, both in their homes and elsewhere. For the purposes of this study, a mixed method research approach was employed, meaning that the study will follow both the qualitative and quantitative approaches. The respondents are a mixture of both literate and illiterate persons, and because of that, the researcher had to use both English and the home language of the respondents to explain the contents of the questionnaires and obtain the relevant information. The study identified the reasons that stokvels, which were believed to be popular in the past, and still are, because Black people in South Africa did not have access to formal financial institutions, remain popular long after the demise of apartheid. It is in the interest of the citizens of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to archive the financial activities of its inhabitants as this valuable information will be needed by future generations. This can be done by creating a website or adding a link to the existing ones where the information is readily available for the users. For future research purposes, stokvels in various parts of the Municipality and South Africa as a whole need to be studied in order to identify and compare to the available literature the general success factors.

Alternative visions of "Harmony" : exploring gender and participation in the Malcolm Island Community Resource Cooperative

Pullen, Mary MacLaren 11 1900 (has links)
The cooperative enterprise has seemed, to many contemporary 'green' theorists, to be a socially sustainable economic alternative to conventional corporate capitalism, based on the ideas of grassroots participation, democracy, egalitarianism, community, social equity and empowerment. I argue, however, that there has been no attempt in 'green' thought to analyze gender relations within the cooperative enterprise. Instead, 'green' theorists view the cooperative as a homogeneous social entity with a shared subjectivity; and assume that the cooperative's 'sustainable' attributes - decentralized, democratic, and equitable principles - will ensure gender equity and empowerment through social sustainability. Reviewing 'green' theories of cooperatives and social sustainability, this thesis challenges 'green' interpretations of participation and social sustainability that ignore members' gendered identities, relations, and interests, particularly in resource-dependent communities. 'Green' definitions of participation have tended to narrowly focus on access to the cooperative without paying attention to cooperative member dynamics. By focusing attention on the nuances of participation and the implications for equity and empowerment, this thesis explores the complexities and contradictions of gender and participation as they apply to a mixed-gender community resource cooperative on Malcolm Island, British Columbia. Using a labour-knowledge-authority framework, the case study of the Malcolm Island Community Resource Cooperative (MICRC) illustrates that while the cooperative may be socially sustainable according to 'green' community and social economic ideals, actual participation in the cooperative enterprise is more complex, contradictory, and gendered than 'green' thought has typically assumed. / Arts, Faculty of / Geography, Department of / Graduate

Gentrification and the Four Sisters: towards a shared inner city

Allueva, Raul C. 05 1900 (has links)
Adequate and affordable housing for low-income residents is essential for the well being of the community. In the City of Vancouver, the majority of available low-income housing is located in the inner city and, in particular, the area around the Downtown Eastside neighborhood. The continued loss of units due to redevelopment and conversion is a serious concern in relation to the lagging replacement of units. This study explores the relationship between inner city gentrification and social housing provision. It looks at current gentrification trends in Canadian inner cities and uses the case example of the Four Sisters Housing Cooperative in the Downtown Eastside neighborhood to illustrate a possible model for future housing. Gentrification is shown to be a major factor behind the increased pressure for residential development and the conversion of existing units in the inner city. A second contributing factor is the planned redevelopment of large parts of the inner city. Both are considered by-products of the restructuring of the urban economy from manufacturing to the service industries, which increases competition for and around the central business district. The study provides a cursory examination of current theory on gentrification with an emphasis on the impact on social housing provision. A number of factors are shown to influence the demand for residential accommodation in Vancouver’s inner city. These are: -the favourable central location of the inner city relative to suburban locations; -the shift of the economy to the service sector, which has resulted in the growth of residential opportunities to capture the growing market of downtown workers; -the increase in tertiary and quaternary employment; -new consumer preferences which value the inner city lifestyle; -significant demographic changes related to the age, household size and composition, employment profile, and income of inner-city population; -the continued economic dominance of the downtown. Research carried out in various Canadian cities indicates that gentrification is becoming more complex, often moderate or gradual, and potentially chaotic. The observed encroachment of development activity, growth in the number of families, and the prognosis for new residents with a higher socioeconomic status, is a concern in terms of the future ability to develop housing for local residents and establish policy for the protection of existing private housing. The study shows that the Four Sisters Cooperative has achieved both practical and political goals by providing secure, long-term accommodation for Downtown Eastside residents, providing further economic stability in the area, and adding to the needed stock of family housing. Through its income base, the Four Sisters also caters to a rising demand for low-end market housing in the inner city. The new advocacy for family accommodation in the inner city on the part of the Vancouver Planning Department is evidence of the success of the project. The findings suggest that, as the Canadian inner city becomes more economically and socially diverse, initiatives like the Four Sisters are uniquely suited to respond effectively to the future need for long-term, low-income accommodation. However, the Four Sisters model is unlikely to be readily replicated in the difficult economic times ahead, particularly given the deep level of subsidy that it requires and the current fiscal constraints which all levels of government are under. This implies that future housing solutions must be formulated through government leadership and in cooperation with the community, all levels of government, the non-profit sector, and the private sector. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), School of / Graduate

Reflections on current practices of group work learning at the University of Limpopo, South Africa : towards a refined contextual approach

Modipane, Mpho Calphonia January 2020 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D. (Curriculum Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / Group Work Learning (GWL) has, over the past thirty years, grown in popularity as a pedagogy in Higher Education across the world, and has widely been documented as a more effective pedagogy in comparison to individualistic learning. However, research studies also warn against the uninformed use of GWL and the negative results thereof. Within popular modes of GWL such as cooperative learning, team because their use has proven to yield success and positive results. It is within this context that the study sought to reflect on the practices of GWL at the University of Limpopo with the view to arrive at refined contextual approaches- approaches that would be reflective and context driven. The study adopted a qualitative research approach, which is anchored in the interpretive research paradigm, and employed a descriptive and exploratory case study design to address the existing knowledge gaps. Semi-structured interviews with eight lecturers from the four faculties at University of Limpopo, observations with eight student groups and informal conversations with the eight student groups were used to collect data for the study. The key findings of the study were as follows: 1) Practitioners in the study did not employ any particular elements, guidelines, principles, models or theories to underpin their use of GWL as a teaching and learning strategy and 2) Individual and group accountability, poor participation and group dynamics remained a challenge in the use of GWL. The additional sub-findings were: 1) The intended or required learning was clearly articulated but focused mainly on learning content and minimally on skills development, values and attitudes, 2) Group formation and group size varied from group to group depending on class size and did not consider context. 3) Practitioners thought there was a need for the improvement of GWL, 4) The study identified challenges and possibilities for improvement. Based on these findings, I propose a guided, reflective and contextual approach to GWL that is cyclic in character, places the reflectiveness and context of the practices at the center of the process and in which the approach further connects the practices to all the other components that are key to GWL, namely: clear intended learning outcomes that are inclusive of skills, values and attitudes; clear task instruction; elements or guidelines underpinned by relevant group learning theories or models; as well as clear measures to xiii foster accountability. Group formation and group size based on a clear rationale, as well as continuous reflection on the process with a view to improving and refining the practices. Such an approach is likely to provide the student groups with some framework on how to learn together and complete their tasks/assignments and projects in a manner which is accountable.
