Situating at this constant evolving environment in the knowledge based economy era, when facing the impact of global recession, could Taiwan once again higher its industry level and make another shocking economic miracle, like it did in the 20th century? Adult Learning in the Workplace: A Conceptualization and Model of the Corporate University

Barley, Karen L. III 27 April 1998 (has links)
By exploring the historical development and current state of the corporate university through literature reviews, case study analyses, and interviews with corporate university practitioners, this study conceptualizes the corporate university. The shortage of knowledgeable workers in technical areas and rapid advances in technology have energized adult learning in the United States. In response to these changes and needs, many corporations have incorporated formal learning programs into their organizations. As conceptualized in this study, the corporate university is Corporate America's vehicle for providing learning programs to their workers with the goal of developing and maintaining a highly skilled, knowledgeable, and adaptable workforce that contributes to organizational performance. Through an historical development and conceptualization based on interviews with corporate university practitioners and case study analyses, this study also examines the strengths and weaknesses of the corporate university. The corporate university does, in fact, provide a useful and innovative way to reach a portion of the adult learning population. Moreover, the corporate university provides learning initiatives that are related to the adult's current and future role in the workplace. In this way, the learning opportunities provided by the corporate university make the knowledge relevant and accessible to the adult learner. However, the corporate university is not founded on adult learning principles and is chartered to consider corporate success rather than individual development. This purpose endangers the corporate university in that it has the potential to exploit the American workforce by forcing undesired learning opportunities. This study identifies a basic component, partnership, that helps many corporate universities avoid employee exploitation and provide learning opportunities that have meaning to both the individual learners and the organization. The partnership component is foregrounded in a model for program development that is presented in this construct for future and current corporate university planners. The model is not tested in this thesis; however, it has been reviewed and endorsed by a panel of corporate university experts. Provided that partnership is considered and integrated into the approach, this study concludes that the corporate university, as a conceptual and an interactive model, is a useful vehicle for reaching the adult learner and for preparing and maintaining an American workforce able to manage change and remain competitive. / Master of Science

The future university

Blass, Eddie January 2001 (has links)
The 'university' has been around for centuries, and yet the majority of British Universities have yet to reach their 50th birthdays. The higher education sector has been through extensive change over a relatively short period of time, and will continue to do so as the future requires it. This thesis briefly maps the residual and dominant models of the university before examining the emergent model and drawing out a future model. While much of the history is based in Britain, the emergent and future models draw on examples from all around the world. Essentially the future model of the university will have three core elements. It will be corporate, global, and virtual. Each of these is examined in detail in the thesis, and thought is also given to the potential impact of these developments on academics within universities and potential future students. The models presented here may cause concern and some resistance in the higher education community. It is hoped that they will stimulate debate and action regarding the future, rather than encouraging people to stand their ground and defend the dominant or residual models. The emergent model is already upon us. The future model is there for us to shape.

The Study of Corporate University Operation Based on Organizational Learning and Knowledge Management¡ÐTake the TPC Training Unit as the Example

Wang, Rueih-Chuan 19 June 2012 (has links)
As the number of employee retirement grows, the enterprise inevitably faces the manpower change on a large scale. In order to reduce the cost of the knowledge inheritance from senior personnel to junior personnel to the minimum, it is necessary to evaluate the feasibility of establishing an educational mechanism based on ¡§organizational learning¡¨ and ¡§knowledge management¡¨, under which the junior personnel can learn effectively. Based on the experiences, methods as well as the implementation skills accumulated by the senior personnel in the long term, ¡§Knowledge Management¡¨ constitutes the mechanism of expertise acquisition, integration and accumulation by tutoring and practicing. With the mechanism, the knowledge inheritance is brought into full play and furthermore, develops new expertise unceasingly. By ¡§Organizational Learning¡¨, organization can acquire the persistent competitive advantage. Therefore, the research goal includes the following: 1. Comprehend the application of ¡§Knowledge Management¡¨ and ¡§Organizational Learning¡¨ on corporate organization and educational training. 2. Discover the possible latent problems in the existing operation mode adopted by TPC training unit. 3. Intend to establish an operation mode by setting up a corporate university based on ¡§Knowledge Management¡¨ and ¡§Organizational Learning¡¨. To improve the operational effectiveness of TPC training unit and to enhance knowledge transfer and talent development. Based on the material obtained from the comparison between the existing theory and the empirical information, results of this study draw conclusions as follow: 1. Corporate university operated by the mode of ¡§Organizational Learning¡¨ and ¡§Knowledge Management¡¨ can achieve enterprise goal. 2. Corporate university can build the learning-friendly environment that is favorable for constructing a learning organization. 3. Corporate university not only teaches expertise and workmanship but also organization culture. 4. Corporate university is the core factor and driving force of business continuity. Cooperação universidade-empresa: uma análise das contribuições das universidades corporativas brasileiras / University-industry cooperation: an analysis of the contributions of the Brazilian Corporate Universities

Barra Neto, André 17 September 2015 (has links)
The increase of international competitiveness, the speed of change in competitive environments and the emergence of the knowledge economy, require significant changes in the speed of innovation in Brazilian companies. The great challenge for companies is to leave the traditional model of development of products and services to an open innovation model involving new management models and partnerships with institutions of Science and Technology (ICT´s). The universities, which until then were seen mainly as a source of knowledge and human resources, are now directing their skills for developing technology. This university-industry cooperation is a complex dynamic and is the result of a number of factors, one of them the training of corporate employees. This requires a greater commitment of the company with the education and development of these to acquire a sustainable competitive advantage. In this environment we have an important tool that are corporate universities, which emerged in Brazil in 1998 in order to promote continuing education for employees of companies seeking to increase competitiveness. So we made a descriptive qualitative research study with multiple cases method through in-depth interviews being studied three Brazilian corporate universities, Petrobras University (UP), the Algar University (UniAlgar), and Bematech University (UB). The results generated conclusions about (a) the link between corporate universities of Petrobras, Algar e Bematech, and the areas of R & D & I of their respective companies, (b) the main current and future challenges of corporate universities analyzed, (c) the stage of cooperation between corporate universities and ICT\'s, (d) the characteristics of corporate universities that influence R&D&I and university-industry cooperation, which eventually were basis for the propose of (e) a model for the Corporate University management of R & D & I to intensify the processes in cooperation University - Company. The main results point to an important link between the UC\'s and intensification of R&D&I processes on training and qualification of personnel who develop or may develop R&D&I, moreover, has, by its characteristic educator, an important participation in the process of university-industry cooperation. Thus the model can help organizations develop UC\'s to make a decisive role in achieving its strategic challenges.

A formação do profissional além dos muros da escola / Professional education beyond school walls

Moraes, Margarete de 11 April 2014 (has links)
In recent years, corporate universities have emerged in the complex Brazilian educational system as an alternative to the lack of qualified manpower in the labor market. Some initiatives do not make use of the \"corporate university\" title, as there is no officially recognized nomenclature. The use of the term \"university\" is, besides a metaphor for the goals to be reached, a marketing strategy which, at times, may bring about some sort of debate in academic environments. But, in practice, what is seen in corporate universities is convergence between company and academy, as partnerships with universities and well-known educational institutions add quality and credibility to the proposed work. What seems most important in this scenario is the search for alternatives to reverse the current state of underqualified professionals, which decreases productivity and inhibits innovation, factors that directly impact the development of the whole country. This work raises data on the educational scenario in Brazil and the emergence of corporate universities. It is proposed, therefore, the intersection of schools, companies, and academy towards a single goal: educated and informed citizens who are critically and creatively skilled.

L’institution seconde Université d’Entreprise : Une analyse de l’imaginaire organisationnel / The Corporate University as a secondary institution : a study of the organizational imaginary

Philippe, Xavier 07 September 2012 (has links)
The study of the Corporate University is a topic that has received little attention in the literature. It is thus largely seen as a structure dealing with training issues which has to contribute both to the strategic development of its parent organization and to foster the internal culture. Beyond this instrumental definition, what is really a Corporate University? The very name of this structure raises some questions. Is there, in addition to the visible managerial mission statement, some “latent functions” for the Corporate University? How is it possible to go beyond the cultural issue in order to question the hidden motivations? We have mobilized during this work an interpretative framework that helps to question the imaginary dimension of the object beyond its visible function. To do this, we used two different theoretical “frameworks” The first one is prescriptive and the second one is analytical. Our aim is to question in an iterative movement the different roles and functions that could be those of the Corporate University. A particular framework based on various qualitative methods was built. It is based on the collection of two different types of discourse, one controlled and one more spontaneous in order to mobilize the two theoretical frameworks we mentioned. Furthermore, we wanted to interview all stakeholders of the Corporate University. Different techniques (secondary data, interviews, observation and collection of drawings) were used to reach this goal. The results of this doctoral research are numerous. First, they allow the unveiling of a secondary institution of the organizational imaginary, here the Corporate University. It creates a special relationship between an organization and the people it employs and will promote the effectiveness of the organizational imaginary. This is based on the formulation of a promise made by the parent organization to individuals. By offering their human capital to the organization, individuals will expect career opportunities in return. This promise is based on three principles underlying the imaginary role of the Corporate University: the valuespromoted by the parent organization, the prestige provided by the academic partner and expectations of recognition shown by individuals. We propose to rethink the institutional role of the Corporate University on this imaginary triptych basis.
