Gray Matters: Aging in the Age of #grannyhairGiles, Sarah Elizabeth Tally 31 May 2017 (has links)
Drawing on previous literature in cultural gerontology, ageism and age relations, and cultural appropriation this study analyzes the recent grannyhair trend on instagram. Recently, younger women have been coloring their hair combinations of white, silver, and gray and posting images of their style on instagram with the #grannyhair designation. In this study we use an intersectional approach to age and gender relations to explore this phenomenon. Previous studies show that women's behaviors and presentations of aging are policed by cultural standards of age-appropriate appearance and performance, particularly in regards to their hair. Qualitative content analysis of #grannyhair images are examined to assess the extent of age-based stereotypes and policing of age-appropriate behavior and appearance. This study found that instagram users engaged in this trend did not challenge age relations. Rather, boundaries of age-appropriate behaviors enacted in the #grannyhair trend are largely set by younger users. The ways in which young users utilize ageist stereotypes as a way to emphasize the contrast between their stylistic choices and their status as young attractive women framed the #grannyhair trend as one of appropriation. That is, young women adopted gray, white, and silver hair as a cultural symbol and changed its original meaning as a marker of old age. Conversations among both young and old instagram users echoing previous literature that details the contentious relationships old women have with their aging bodies, and hair specifically. / Master of Science / Recently, young women have been coloring their hair combinations of white, silver, and gray and posting images of their style on instagram with the #grannyhair designation. As this trend gained popularity, there has been some speculation as to what this trend could mean for old women and their attitudes towards and experiences of their own hair turning white or gray. While some news sites have speculated that this trend represents a celebration of old women’s appearances, this study finds that while both young and old women participate in this trend, they discuss it in different ways that do not challenge ageist attitudes or negative stereotypes of old women. For young women, this style is not about celebrating or valuing old age, and they engage in this trend through making jokes that make clear that they are not old, and that old is still a devalued category. Old women either clearly stated that the trend was odd because looking old is clearly bad (as it comes with a decrease in status) or talked about giving in to the inevitability of gray hair. As such, old women are now faced with either adhering to the new standards of white or gray hair, or face further social exclusion and invisibility.

Ornamenting the Raj: Opulence and Spectacle in Victorian IndiaShah, Siddhartha V. January 2019 (has links)
This dissertation examines symbolic representations of British imperial power through the appropriation and display of Indian “things.” The objects and spectacles examined here—the Koh-i-Noor diamond, tigers and tiger hunting, and turbaned men on display—are all invested with a range of social and symbolic meanings within both their indigenous and imperial contexts. The things appropriated into the British Empire’s styling of itself that are discussed in this study were each traditionally associated with masculinity and kingship in their native Indian context and subsequently displayed on and around the bodies of British women. This study advances a relationship between the theatrics of British imperial power, and the emasculation and objectification of Indian men. A list of images has been submitted as a supplemental digital file with this dissertation.

British amateur singers and Black South African choral music : the politics of access and encounterFirth, Kerry January 2018 (has links)
This thesis explores connections between British amateur singers and black South African choral music that, over the past fifty years, have grown in strength and significance. By concentrating on a set of representative case studies, it investigates how and why this music is learned, performed and rehearsed within a variety of choirs and ensembles of different styles and experiences. In addition, the thesis focuses on certain songs that have become popular within specific choral contexts, and discusses the reasoning behind their enthusiastic reception and attractive power. My approach is ethnographical, and the material I present is taken from my own participant-observations of choir rehearsals, workshops and performances, as well as from interviews I conducted with choir members and leaders. On a theoretical level, this thesis engages critically with ethnomusicological and anthropological debates surrounding cultural appropriation. Particularly pertinent to each chapter are discussions concerning authenticity, cultural authority and power relations, and I explore the politics and logistics that are associated with British singersâ encounters with black South African choral music. By discussing critically these different levels of encounter and engagement, I offer some new and intriguing standpoints from which to consider existing debates surrounding cultural appropriation and, in so doing, suggest approaches for theorising cross-cultural encounters through a more nuanced postcolonial lens.

Seeking justice beyond legalism: cultural appropriation of totem poles on the Pacific Northwest CoastLefroy, Isabelle 11 April 2018 (has links)
This thesis attempts to illuminate and problematize the marriage of capitalism and colonialism that results in the widespread appropriation of Indigenous expressions of culture, and in particular, totem poles. This project complicates our understanding of totem poles as they have been presented in the marketplace and restores some of the intricate legal meaning to these incredible works. First, I examine Canadian intellectual property law and colonial policies of cultural erasure like the potlatch ban. Next, I explore the use of rights discourse, or legalism, as a potential route for solutions to this issue. I then conduct case studies of three totem poles. I examine one totem pole as a commodity, one functioning as a piece of art and someone's livelihood, and one as part of a Tlingit legal tradition. This last totem, as a materially appropriated object, provides an opportunity to explore the treatment of totem poles in proper context and also functions as a suggested solution to Indigenous art appropriation more broadly. My intervention on this last totem reframes these issues in a non-Western legal cannon to attempt to address these difficult legal questions. My examination of these three totems serves to destabilize our understanding of totem poles sold in the marketplace, and to broaden our understanding of totems as manifestations of Indigenous laws. / Graduate

Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in 'C' Major (1879 to 2010)Luo, Mengyu January 2013 (has links)
Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is a fascinating institution. It was first founded in 1879 under the name of Shanghai Public Band and was later, in 1907, developed into an orchestra with 33 members under the baton of German conductor Rudolf Buck. Since Mario Paci, an Italian pianist, became its conductor in 1919, the Orchestra developed swiftly and was crowned the best in the Far East by a Japanese musician Tanabe Hisao in 1923. At that time, Shanghai was semi-colonized by the International Settlement and the French Concession controlled by the Shanghai Municipal Council and the French Council respectively. They were both exempt from local Chinese authority. The Orchestra was an affiliated organization of the former: the Shanghai Municipal Council. When the Chinese Communist Party took over mainland China in 1949, the Orchestra underwent dramatic transformations. It was applied as a political propaganda tool performing music by composers from the socialist camp and adapting folk Chinese songs to Western classical instruments in order to serve the masses. This egalitarian ideology went to extremes in the notorious 10-year Cultural Revolution. Surprisingly, the SSO was not disbanded; rather it was appropriated by the CCP to create background music for revolutionary modern operas such as Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy. The end of Cultural Revolution after Mao's death in 1976 ushered in a brand new Reform-and-Opening-up era marked by Deng Xiaoping s public claim: Getting rich is glorious! Unlike previous decades when the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra together with music it performed was made to entertain the general masses, elitism came back under a social entourage characterized by Chinese-style socialism. The concept of elite, however, is worth a further thought. Shanghai is not only home to a large number of Chinese middle class but also constitutes a promising paradise for millions of nouveau riches which resembles, to a great extent, the venture land for those Shanghailanders a century ago. This thesis, as the title indicates, puts the historical development of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra from 1879 to 2010 in C major applying Pierre Bourdieu's cultural capital theory so as to understand how this extraordinary musical currency is produced, represented, appropriated and received by different groups of people in Shanghai across five distinct historical stages. Cultural appropriation tactics and other relevant theories such as cultural imperialism and post colonialism are also combined to make sense of particular social environment in due course. To put the SSO in C major does not infer that this musical institution and music it performed through all these years are reduced to economic analysis. Nonetheless, the inner value of music itself is highlighted in each historical period. A psychological concept affordance, first applied by Tia DeNora in music sociology, is also integrated to help comprehend how and what Chinese people or the whole nation latched on to certain pieces of music performed at the SSO in different historical phases. Moreover, musicological analysis is carried out in due course to elaborate on the feasibility of, for example, adopting Chinese folk songs to Western classical instruments and creating a hybrid music type during Cultural Revolution. Aesthetic value of music is thus realized in the meantime. Archival research is mostly used in this thesis supplemented by one focus group and one in-depth interview with retired players at the SSO. Fieldwork of this research is mainly based in the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Archive; although materials from Shanghai Library and Shanghai Municipal Archive are also collected and made use of.

This research deals with the continuing education of Cultural Mediators Educators in educational informational environments. The definition of the research object considered the education experience of professional staff to work on the device Einstein Knowledge Station (EKE) in Paraisópolis, in the city of São Paulo. Based on Infoeducation frameworks, an historical-cultural approach of the relationship between Information and Education, the research aims to identify and systematize theoretical and methodological elements for the formulation of a concept of continuing education, focused on the processes and practices of cultural mediation guided by principles of appropriation and cultural protagonism. Research of a qualitative nature, takes as corpus of analysis the documentation produced in the programs and actions carried out with groups of educators from educational informational device, as well as collection of testimonies, through semi-structured interviews and focus groups with educators. As a result, it was possible to identify three axes due to the mutual articulation exercised at the education of Cultural Mediators Educators: the experience, condition to address the complexity of the question, the education of the reflective professional considered in the social and political dimensions and the environment da EKE as a modality of formative device that resizes the educational-cultural knowledge and actions of educators. When considering a social and political complexity in the field of continuing education of Cultural Mediators Educators, the research thus shows the limits of conceptions that understand education as an instance of standardization of practices and advances in the sense of evidencing the formative space as locus of dialogue between theoretical knowledge and active - University and terrain. It is through the rupture with a diffusionist paradigm that it is possible to affirm that the education with EKE device brings implied in its educationalcultural project actions for the deconfining of subjects when revealing itself as a platform that projects them for cultural citizenship.

O bibliotecário como mediador cultural: concepções e desafios à sua formação / he librarian as a cultural mediator: concepts and challenges to their trainingLima, Celly de Brito 21 March 2016 (has links)
This work interrogates about the formation of a librarian as a cultural mediator, a person committed to processes of appropriation and cultural protagonist in the country. The research starts from the hypothesis that cultural mediation, intrinsics to the occupation of librarian is treated improperly and confusingly in standards and guidelines for their training. It carries out bibliographical and documentation research to understand and deepen issues around the concepts studied. It identifies and analyzes prescriptive documents showing representations of professional librarian - manifest of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions and Unesco, as well as Brazilian law that regulates the occupation of librarian and guidelines Ministry of Education. It also develops documentary research in Brazilian and French proposals of cultural mediation courses - graduate and postgraduate studies -in order to support the idea of \"Librarian cultural mediator\", since the proposals allow us to infer descriptions of cultural mediator. It realizes that the standards, guidelines and policy documents librarian is not placed clearly as a cultural mediator, neither as a negotiator, but as an educator and diffuser of culture, that offer services aimed at assimilation and cultural consumption, failing to respond to the demand of appropriation and cultural protagonism. It considers that the challenge that precedes all others, for the formation of the librarian as a cultural mediator, is to reflect, discuss, theorize and explain the concept of formation, surpassing the dualistic view (technicality x humanism, technical x practice, do x think...) which has historically guiding the Information Science and the Librarianship.

A negociação cultural: um novo paradigma para a mediação e a apropriação da cultura escrita / Cultural negotiation: a new paradigm for mediation and appropriation of written cultureOliveira, Amanda Leal de 23 May 2014 (has links)
This thesis aims to contribute to the definition and development of the concept \"cultural negotiation\", understood as a theoretical-methodological category guiding the mediation processes used to suit the written culture. Three cultural devices were studied and their actions are related to the writing mediation in three different contexts: Kaffehuset Friele Educational and Cultural Center, located in Minas Gerais rural area; Einstein Knowledge Station, in Paraisópolis, the second largest slum located in Sao Paulo City, and Louise MIchel Public Library, located in greater Paris/France, which has a large amount of immigrants. Collaborative methodology has been used, in other words, a scientific construction process based on the dialogue between scientific knowledge and \"action\", adopting, however, a perspective that does not reduce or overlap one another. The results indicate that by acknowledging and incorporating their concepts and processes, the conflicts caused by divergences and/or asymmetries between the different individuals, groups, segments, categories, sociocultural matrix (readers/non-readers, oral tradition/written culture), the studied devices, unlike others of the same content are, rather than instances of control and/or dissemination, they are instances of cultural negotiation involving subjects, texts and contexts in active, assertive and complex processes of information and cultural appropriation, including - but not exclusively - written culture. The concept of cultural negotiation, therefore, points out to new perspectives concerning written culture, as well as cultural appropriation as a whole. Simultaneously, it indicates to be able to contribute to redefine essential practices and concepts of cultural mediation and its paradigms.
