I skenet av vänskap : Internationella studenters syn på karaktären av hierarki och auktoritet inom den svenska universitetskulturen / In the light of friendship : International students' views of the character of hierarchy and authority within the Swedish university culture

Johansson, Niklas January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to present international students' perspectives and interpretations of how the hierarchy and authority will be expressed in the Swedish university. To make the structures visible will the Swedish context be compared to the informants' previous experiences abroad, to visualise the contrasters. Factors that the informants thinks may will affect the social structures within the university can be found in areas of educational background, financing, responsibility and the society approach to higher education. Some differences that are contrasted by the informants can also be found in the areas of time, organisation, evaluation, accountability and competitive mentality. Other social differences that arose is greetings, academic roles and the differences between personal and professional interaction. In summary the informants overall describes the Swedish context as more equal, less authoritarian and the social relations between the student and the lecturer can be interpreted as amicable.

The Compatibility of National Culture in International Mergers and Acquisitions

Liu, Chaoyun 01 December 2012 (has links)
This paper examines the relationship between national culture differences and five-day cumulative abnormal returns of acquirers around cross-border merger announcements. The sample consists of 1,200 cross-border deals by frequent acquirers from emerging countries for the period of January 1, 1985 to June 30, 2008. The main objective is to analyze the relation between the difference in Hofstede (1984)’s four cultural dimensions --- power distance, individualism, masculinity, and uncertainty avoidance and the merger performance. The results imply the compatibility of some cultural dimensions, individualism in particular, that result in gains in merger. The results also show that the cultural effects vary with the firm size. In addition, the evidence provides support for the hubris hypothesis by Roll (1986).

Larsson, Björn January 2008 (has links)

Aim: The study's aim and run-up are to investigate how journalists frame texts, during impact of those standards and values that they have, combined with the organization and in the nation where they work.

Method/Material: The study looks on how the authors of articles at the Swedish newspaper "Dagens Nyheter" and the Norwegian newspaper "Dagbladet", uses the concept al-Qaida, in their news rapport, during the period 19:th of mars – 24:th of august 2003. Two hundred articles were collected and divided into two groups, 1) the explicit group, there the text actu ally treated al-Qaida, 2) the implicit group, there the text e.g. linked to the name al-Qaida and the article itself treated another subject. Is it possible to see differences or resemblances, in the way that journa lists frame their texts? The main theoretical run-up is framing accor- ding to R. Entman (1993). The study works with an overall hypothesis: that it advises differences between these two countries and newspapers framing of al-Qaida.

Main results: Among the explicit articles, the newspaper "Dagbladet" distinguihes themselves most, both in the number of articles and how many times they used the concept al-Qaida. Among the implicit articles, it is the newspaper "Dagens Nyheter" that have the largest amount of articles, but it is the "Dagbladet" that mentions the concept al-Qaida more times. I therefore draw the conclusion that "Dagbladet" "refers/ mentions" al-Qaida considerable more times in their articles than "Dagens Nyheter". The reason to this is probably the cultural, indivi dual, organizational and national differences that are between the countries. And probably that Norway were a part of the Iraq coalition force's 2003.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Claudia Cezar COMPLETA.pdf: 2607164 bytes, checksum: 3cdf179e95cc2aeb1abd6c28382641fe (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-04-14 / This dissertation results from an autobiographical reflection, based on the researcher ´s recovery of memories and experiences during the life-work journey while managing the Center for Art and Culture (NAC) of the Methodist University of São Paulo (UMESP ), since its inception in 2005. Understanding the process of creation, formation and inclusion of NAC at UMESP, as well as the exercise of cultural management in this university space were goals of this research, which highlights the dialogue between education and culture, mediated by art, from the insertion of artistic and cultural activities focused on respect for differences and appreciation of human and cultural diversity. What is the role of the cultural action within a university? How these actions can add to the process of educational training? What were the challenges involved the construction and establishment of the Center for Art and Culture at UMESP? These were generating issues for the development of this work, which used an (auto) biographical methodology. In the narrative, the researcher sought to revisit and reframe, with a view to producing knowledge, memories and stories that contributed to the construction of her own identity and that boosted her integration in the management of culture at UMESP, legitimizing and firming the Center for Art and Culture´s action, over its 10 years of existence. In reflecting on this practice, it became clear that working with the subjectivities is the great challenge of managing culture, as well as the construction of collaborative processes, in the perspective of "cause" and not "doing for" is the way to strengthening and deepening the actions.

Organizational Politics and Employee Behavior: A Comparison Between the U.S. and Lebanon

Elkhalil, Yara A. 01 January 2017 (has links)
Organizational politics (OP) is describe by many researchers as actions which affect activities, behaviors, and most importantly decision making through the use of power. Guided by Hofstede's cultural dimension theory and Mallol's, Holtom's and Lee's job embeddedness theory, the aim of this study was to examine employees' reactions toward OP regarding the substantially different cultures of the U.S. and Lebanon. These specific two countries were selected due to a gap in published research on culture and value differences. Research questions examined the extent to which cultural values differed and how employees respond differently facing OP. A survey-based research design included 352 participants, 176 from each country, was used to assess the perception and cognitive levels of employees in regards of political behavior and practices within their organizations. Key variables of cultural values, political behavior, and employee responses were measured by a structured survey questionnaire. Using SPSS version 23 a correlation matrix, T-test, and descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data. Findings indicated that Lebanese employees experience more power distance and gender role differentiation thus resulting in higher job related stress and anxieties and lower motivation levels than The U.S. employees. Outcomes of this research are beneficial for the organizations and society to cope with the problematic aspects of OP. Potential implications for positive social change are in the form of significantly reducing employee inequity, unfairness, and injustice practices and most importantly reducing employee stress.
