A case study of lower secondary school reform, renewal and cultureBoland, Terry W. January 2003 (has links)
The case study examines the outcomes of a process of re-structuring, renewal and cultural change in a school undergoing transformation from a senior high school to a middle school. The research investigates the impact of school improvement initiatives on the school and classroom culture and learning environment after 12 to 18 months of reform implementation. The research approach is a developmental mixed method investigation utilising quantitative and qualitative data collection procedures. The study proceeded through two stages: Quantitative surveying of students and parents prior to the implementation of school improvement initiatives; and quantitative and qualitative surveying of students and parents after 12 and 18 months, respectively, of reform implementation and application of the treatment.Evidence of change in the college and classroom culture and learning environment was evident after twelve months. The case study identified that students and parents identified changes in a number of elements of the classroom culture and learning environment. These included improvements in home-school communications, involvement in classroom planning and organization, relationships between teachers and students, school culture and evidence of pedagogical change. The research also identified that change had not occurred in the attainment of student learning outcomes, educational values and parent confidence to assist students in their learning. It became apparent that change in the organisational culture had occurred within the first 12 to 18 months. However, change to the deeper cultural dimensions of educational values and student learning outcomes were less in evidence.

It's better than catching frogs : exploring inclusion in relation to local context in Lao PDR and ThailandGrimes, Peter Julian January 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines the applicability of pre-dominantly Western theories of inclusive school development in countries of the Global South. Firstly, the findings of a review of research literature are used to develop a typology to describe the common features of inclusive schools, incorporating ways in which they might be supported. This typology was then used to explore the ways in which schools in the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Thailand developed inclusive practices. Engagement with school systems in these countries over a period of six years between 2003 and 2009 provided opportunities to work at several different levels with schools that in some way defined themselves as being 'inclusive'. Using data generated through field work with schools in an Inclusive Education Project in Laos and one school in Thailand, tensions were identified between the theoretical framework and my initial research findings. A revision of the typology was undertaken, drawing on a wider literature to take account of additional factors such as local and national culture and the impact of the policy context in these countries. The researcher often had the role of consultant, creating tensions in the way he constructed his position and also in the schools’ response. Reflecting on these tensions became a productive process in terms of understanding the factors which effectively promoted the development of inclusion in these different contexts. In particular, the process highlighted the relatively neglected significance of local context and knowledge and the way in which these factors impact on inclusive school development. In order to explore these issues in greater detail, further research was then undertaken in one school in Laos, creating a case study developed over four years. This detailed engagement revealed more clearly the limits of typologies in general and of Western theories in particular. Whilst they may offer a lens for examining inclusive school development they do not 'adequately' account for variable factors rooted in the local context. In conclusion, policy initiatives designed to support the development of more inclusive schools must allow for the creation of space at local levels for meanings to be constructed which will support teachers in developing their own sense of agency and making changes in their practice of which they have ownership.

Nové médiá na škole / New media in schoolTrubanová, Natália January 2018 (has links)
The "New Media at School" diploma thesis focuses on the presence of new media at school and on the meanings and practices associated with it. Based on participatory observation in Prague high school, semi-structured interviews and Internet resources analysis, it tries to understand how new media are involved in shaping the space and organization of the school, its teaching and learning organization. It focuses on how the school seeks to cope with the arrival of these expensive facilities for which it is responsible. It alsonotices how the school seeks to cope with the penetration of the different spaces that the new media bring into its hitherto closed environment. At the same time, it points to ways in which the school itself crosses its borders, the time-space of disciplination. Finally, it monitors the impact of new media on relationships within the school, between teachers and pupils, but also within the peer group. Through these meanings and practices, it points to the dilemmas that the emergence of new media has brought to the school environment, and analyzes how new media allows pupils to face this disciplination pressure in the school, and vice versa, in what moments new media themselves take disciplination into their own hands. The new media is not perceived as passive tools, but as actors...
