Home Literacy Environment and Experiences: A Description of Asian American Homes and Recommended Intervention

Lewis, Junko Yokota 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe the home literacy environments and literacy experiences of a select group of Asian American children, and to recommend an intervention program based on the findings. The target population was the families which sent their children to a Saturday Asian language and culture school while sending them to public schools during the week, because of their expressed interest in literacy and the probability of their being the group to most likely benefit from intervention. The Home Literacy Environment and Literacy Experiences survey was initially sent out and results tallied and quantified. Upon placing the returned surveys into groups of "high," "middle," and "low" home literacy environment and literacy experiences, a sample of five "high" and five "low" families was selected for further study. Home visits, interviews, field notes, collection of artifacts and other methods of data collection provided a clearer picture of the state of the home literacy environment and literacy experiences of the families studied. Families rated as having "high" home literacy environment and experiences were found to have a larger number of literacy-related materials and higher frequency of literacy-related activities. Bilingualism and education were perceived as being important. The families also exhibited a strong interest in music and music lessons. Parents expressed a desire for two two-hour training sessions which would be held at the Saturday school location while their child attended classes there. It would be ideally held in the native language of the parents by a speaker from the native country. The parents preferred workshops with actual practice and examples which could be seen, accompanied by reading materials. Topics in which parents expressed interest include, in descending order: (a) 'selection of books for and with their child, (b) how to encourage their child to read, (c) how to discuss stories with their child, and (d) how to read aloud to their child.

Circulating Knowledge / Cirkulerande Kunskap

Pyk Wirström, Nils January 2015 (has links)
The project examined how the art and culture school association Kulturskolan’s various activities and operations can be equated. Through a building without spatially embedded hierarchies get all the exercise to undercut each other’s and their own borders and also inspire each other. The rooms are created for opportunities to spontaneous performances, improvisation exercises outside of class and gathering but also concentrated classic exercise in smaller rooms with a teacher.

Kulturkuben / The Culture Cube

Svahn, Morgan January 2015 (has links)
A Culture school should not be a kids talent show room. It should be a creative shop for their own development. This is the starting point of my project. I have an idea of a culture school where the bigger part is for the children and only the children. A place to be safe. The shy kids should be able to practice in a safe environment and the more outspoken kids will have the opportunity to perform. This, normally a place you just spend a lesson at, should be a place to hang around after school. The entrance floor is a semi public floor with an café open for the public and with an area to have flexible purposes, maybe a show room one day and an open lecture the next. This area is the only area for the grown ups. When you pass through into the building you are in the world for the kids. The flexible entrance floor is accompanied with a ”half floor” entirely voided for the kids to hang at. Another floor up and two floors down you’ll find the rooms for different activities. The entire house is devoted to minimize bullying. No long corridors, a constant ability for teachers to watch the kids without being monitors and throughout the house you can hear, and almost see, everything.

Pianolärares teoretiska och praktiska förståelse av individualisering : En kvalitativ / Piano teachers' theoretical and practical understanding of individualization : A qualitative study

Yang Halvardsson, Chenfei January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the understanding of individualized teaching in a group of piano teachers at “Kulturskolan” and a group of piano teacher students. The research questions deal with the views and working methods of a group of professional teachers and a group of student teachers. The study is based in the socio-cultural perspective, as it examines how teachers plan and organize learning at the meeting with different individuals. Data is collected through two separate focus group interviews with these two groups which are then analyzed with thematic analysis. The results present the attitudes of the participants and their use of teaching literature in the individualization work. The result shows that the individualization work is something that can motivate students' learning and the work requires teacher skills. However, it turns out that there are some ambiguities regarding the definition of individualized teaching. It is also evident from the result that the respective groups have different criteria for the choice of teaching literature in the work of individualization and supporting teaching literature can sometimes also challenge the individualization work. In the discussion, the results are further discussed and problematized in relation to previously presented research and literature.

The year 1962 is taken as a starting point, according to a set of structural changes that occurred in the institution, both in physical and didactic procedure. These changes have configured a new phase of professional education in the Santa Catharina s State, which moved toward the consolidation of a technical- scientific culture in the school, quite different from its institutional image of the beginning of the century, thought to caring for poor children. Just in this moment the school establishes a school uniform as well as adopted criteria considered very hard to ensure your everyday use. 1983 is the year in which case occurs the replacement of the uniform known as "mostardão", whose symbolic appeal marks the institution and its students. The period defined in this study also coincides with the period of military dictatorship in Brazil, time of great social movements and strong repression by the dictatorial government. In this context, one could not fail to establish some relations between the tensions experienced in the country and the institution of the school uniform in the ETFSC. The study of history cuts across the areas of education and sociology because we understand that is in the basis of the adoption and the transformation in the aesthetics of uniform, the educational concepts are included which show a close relationship to social changes. In order to construct the base of this analysis, we used several sources: educational legislation, minutes, reports of direction, bylaws, offices, institutional resolutions and photographs. The results of the study pointed out several issues. Firstly, the school uniform was introduced in ETFSC at a time when the institution was projected as a major trainer of skilled professionals to meet needs of expanding industries in the country. So, ETFSC sought greater visibility in society of Florianopolis city and Santa Catharina state. Along with this, trying to discipline the students in order to assimilate a new institutional aesthetic. As for the different models according to the course attended, indicated its close relationship with the curriculum and prevailing concepts in professional education, which revealed the demarcation of social stratification and social positions. In summary, the study showed that school uniforms can express different meanings. We seek only to point out some possibilities of understanding this object constituting the school culture - the uniform - other readings can be made.

Nilson, Teodor January 2015 (has links)
The architectural project aims to make the activity of the Communal Culture School visible in the Älvsjö area in Stockholm. The school as a place is a platform for meetings and cultural expression. The design of the building touches both old as well as later architecture and creates a relationship between them that reflects the ambiguous identity of Älvsjö. The school building creates an imaginative sphere for learning and for play, which claims child culture's inviolable right to space in the city.
