Estudo semântico e diacrônico do sufixo -dade na língua portuguesa / Semantic and diachronic study of the suffix -dade in the portuguese language

Lisângela Simões 23 October 2009 (has links)
There are some authors who consider suffixes as minimum units with no meaning that cannot form a word with a different morphological category from its basis. However, a lot of examples could be easily taken to refute such ideas (from adjectives abstract nouns can be derived: feliz felicidade; the Portuguese suffix eiro can be a compound of nouns, such as pedreiro, or adjectives, interesseiro). This shows us how suffixes carry an autonomy in their meaning and not only change the grammatical category of a derived word. The aim of this research is to analyze the Portuguese suffix dade, showing, through semantic paraphrases, the meanings diachronically presented in grammar books and dictionaries on Portuguese, especially in the Dicionário eletrônico Houaiss da língua portuguesa (2001). We argue that this type of analysis could enrich the studies about meanings and date occurrences associated to this particular suffix. This work is inserted within the purposes of the Grupo de Morfologia Histórica do Português da Universidade de São Paulo (GMHP/USP, Group of Historical Morphology of the Portuguese Language, http://www.usp.br/gmhp), under PhD. Mário Eduardo Viaro coordination.

Three-dimensional geomodeling to identify spatial relations between lithostratigraphy and porosity in the karst carbonate biscayne aquifer, southeastern Florida

Unknown Date (has links)
In southeastern Florida, the majority of drinking water comes from the Biscayne aquifer. This aquifer is comprised of heterogeneous limestones, sandstones, sand, shell and clayey sand with zones of very high permeability. Visualizing the spatial variations in lithology, porosity and permeability of heterogeneous aquifers, like the Biscayne, can be difficult using traditional methods of investigation. Using the Roxar IRAP RMS software multi-layered 3D conceptual geomodels of the lithology, cyclostratigraphy and porosity were created in a portion of the Biscayne aquifer. The models were built using published data from borehole geophysical measurements, core samples, and thin sections. Spatial relations between lithology, cyclostratigraphy, porosity, and preferential flow zones were compared and contrasted to better understand how these geologic features were inter-related. The models show local areas of differing porosity within and cross-cutting different cycles and lithologies. Porosity in the Biscayne aquifer study area follows a hierarchy attributed to lithofacies with a pattern of increasing porosity for the high frequency cycles. This modeling improves understanding of the distribution and interconnectedness of preferential flow zones, and is thus an invaluable tool for future studies of groundwater flow and groundwater contamination in the Biscayne aquifer. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Recognizing and Addressing Risk Ambiguity in Sea Level Rise Adaptation Planning: a Case Study of Miami-Dade County, Florida

Rozance, Mary Ann 09 January 2019 (has links)
As coastal cities around the world identify and implement adaptations to sea level rise, they are faced with competing interests around what should be done and how to prioritize actions. Often, environmental problems--like confronting the challenge of sea level rise--are posed as requiring expert driven, technical solutions to identify and mitigate risks across the landscape. This framing, however, ignores the way in which diverse knowledge can help inform long-term planning horizons that address complex ways that sea level rise affects communities. The failure to integrate diverse knowledge into sea level rise adaptation can result in barriers to implementation and outcomes that can reproduce inequities. In environmental planning, knowledge integration challenges can stem from ambiguity around the construction of environmental risk knowledge, as well as institutional arrangements that inhibit diverse involvement. Ambiguity refers to a context in which there are different and sometimes conflicting views on how to understand the problem or system to be managed, for example, conflicts around what risks to measure and how to measure them. This manifests in the ways that different groups construct and use knowledge about risks. Often ignored in planning contexts and research on sea level rise adaptation, ambiguity--particularly around social risks--are critical to address, since they can determine whether diverse knowledge about risks are integrated or ignored in planning. This dissertation uses a case study of Miami-Dade County, Florida and is guided by the question: how do different groups understand risk within sea level rise, and what planning and governance factors influence the way diverse dimensions of risk are integrated into adaptation strategies? Findings from this case study suggest that baselines, projections, and the focus of risk rooted in an economic discourse based on short-term planning horizons and technical constructions of risk have more authority as compared with counter arguments around ecological and social risks. Recommendations include the need for transparent adaptation decisions and the inclusion of diverse stakeholders in the production of regional climate science, sea level rise assessments, and adaptation planning. A more integrated approach can better address diverse risks and facilitate long-term planning.

A population study of the Dade County Child Guidance Clinic for the years 1948-1958, Miami, Florida

Unknown Date (has links)
"The purpose of this study was to analyze data collected through the administration of a schedule to the records of the Dade County Child Guidance Clinic, Miami, Florida during the first 11 years of the Clinic's existence, in order to ascertain if there was an age, sex, and/or referral source pattern in the cases which were opened. Data were collected from 4,706 cases with whom the Clinic staff had contact for one or more interviews. The Child Guidance Clinic serving Dade County opened for service in January, 1948, and the records were examined from that date through December, 1958. The hypothesis of this study is that there is an age, sex, and/or referral source pattern revealed in the distribution of cases opened during an 11-year period at the Dade County Child Guidance Clinic, Miami, Florida, and that there are no differences in these patterns between the first 5 years and the last 5 years of the Clinic's 11-year existence. The word "pattern" is used to mean a distribution which was evidenced consistently throughout the Clinic records and which could be expected to continue unless extensive changes are made in Clinic policies or within the community"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "June, 1959." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Social Work." / Advisor: Dorothy D. Desenvolvimento e caracterização de filmes e comprimidos bucais a base de pectina e goma gelana para liberação tópica de triancinolona / Development and characterization of films and buccal tablets based on pectin and gellan gum for the topical release of triamcinolone.

Fernandes, Felipe Pereira 16 August 2017 (has links)
Pharmacological treatment of oral pathologies is usually conducted by local administration. However, due to the short time the drug stays in the site of action, this treatment can be quite compromised. Thus, the objective of this work was to develop pharmaceutical forms that pro-vide the local release of triamcinolone in the oral cavity. Mucoadhesive films and tablets were made from natural polymers such as gellan and pectin. The buccal films were prepared by sol-vent casting using different amounts of polymers. The raw materials and films were characte-rized physically chemically using vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR and Raman) and X-ray diffraction. The physical and mechanical properties of the films were also evaluated. In addi-tion, the mucoadhesive and drug dissolution tests were performed. The tablets were prepared by direct pressing with the natural polymers. Different parameters in relation to mixtures and formulations were evaluated such as the flow properties of the constituent powders, average weight, hardness, friability and disintegration. In relation to oral films, these were successfully obtained by a simple method, without the use of crosslinking agents, acids or organic solvents. All presented good results in the evaluated properties, however the formulations with interme-diate amounts of polymers were the best. Among the tablet formulations prepared, only 4 sho-wed good characteristics, however, the dissolution test results showed that these formulations have the ability to act as a controlled drug delivery system.

Teacher Education Students at Miami Dade College: Perceptions of High Impact Practices

Unknown Date (has links)
Miami Dade College (MDC) is predominantly an associate degree granting institution also authorized to confer baccalaureates. As “democracy’s college”, MDC is the nation’s largest, most diverse community college. In 2011, a comprehensive redesign effort was launched to increase degree completion. This sequential mixed model design study queried teacher education student voices to explore their perceived impact of three high-impact practices (i.e., mandatory orientations, assigned advisors, and Individualized Educational Plans). A survey (n=218) was administered during an initial quantitative phase, confirming that a) students perceived the interventions as the institution intended and b) ethnicity influenced perception. Focus groups (n=27) were conducted during a subsequent qualitative phase, unveiling three overarching findings about how and why perceptions of operational, affective, and academic aspects of the interventions were useful, not useful, or could be enhanced to help them navigate/ “survive” college, make adequate progress, and anticipate graduating, transferring, or entering a career. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2016. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Geochemical conditions and groundwater-surface interactions within a municipal well field in Miami-Dade County, Florida

Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis presents a preliminary study on geochemical conditions within the Snapper Creek well field in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The study investigates the background groundwater chemistry within the Biscayne aquifer in order to provide information on the geochemical processes and water-rock interactions within the study site. In conjunction with hydraulic gradient information, major ion chemistry and deuterium and oxygen-18 data were used as environmental tracers to help describe the groundwater-surface water interactions between the well field and the Snapper Creek canal. Hydrologic data show there is potential for natural groundwater recharge from the canal within the shallow flow zone of the Biscayne aquifer and chemical data show evidence of canal-groundwater mixing within this zone. The limitations for the v environmental tracers employed within the study are addressed, as well as recommendations for further research involving natural geochemical tracers and groundwater-surface water interactions near municipal well fields. This study was part of a larger effort being conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in order to assess municipal well field pumping effects on the Snapper Creek (C-2) canal. / by Dominick J.
