Minimum Ecologically Viable Populations : Risk assessment from a multispecies perspectiveSäterberg, Torbjörn January 2009 (has links)
The extinction risk of threatened species has traditionally been assessed by the use of tools of Population Viability Analysis (PVA). Species interactions, however, have seldom been accounted for in PVA:s. The omission of species interactions in risk assessments may further lead to serious mistakes when setting target sizes of populations. Even a slight abundance decrease of a target species may result in changes of the community structure; in the worst case leading to a highly impoverished community. Of critical importance to conservation is therefore the question of how many individuals of a certain population that is needed in order to avoid this kind of consequences. In the current study, a stochastic multispecies model is used to estimate minimum ecological viable populations (MEVP); earlier defined as “the minimum size of a population that can survive before itself or some other species in the community becomes extinct”. The MEVP:s are compared to population sizes given by a single species model where interactions with other species are treated as a constant source incorporated in the species specific growth rate. MEVP:s are found to be larger than the population sizes given by the single species model. The results are trophic level dependent and multispecies approaches are suggested to be of major importance when setting target levels for species at the basal level. Species at higher trophic levels, however, are altogether more prone to extinction than species at the basal level, irrespective of food web size and food web complexity.

Light penetration and attenuation has significant impact on the water quality of lakes. Algal activity, which is important for the levels of several water quality parameters, is dependent on light penetration besides availability of nutrients. In this study, change in light penetration and attenuation in Lake Eymir was studied. The relationships of extinction coefficient (ke), and water quality parameters were investigated. The effect of ke on Chl-a over nutrients were investigated. The water quality parameters measured were / total suspended solid (TSS), phosphate, ammonium, nitrate, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), Secchi disk depth and lake Depth. The measurements were conducted at five different stations in Lake Eymir. Secchi disk, PAR and lake depth measurements were done on site, while TSS, Chl-a and phosphate analyses were done in laboratory, using standard methods. Nitrate and ammonium analyses were conducted through laboratory kits. Linear and non-linear regression models of ke and Chl-a were developed to understand their relationships with the the measured parameters, using XLSTAT software. Analyses of the data at sampling stations revealed that Station 2 and 3 were the most representative stations in general. The model results indicated that ke is as important as nutrients for Chl-a abundance. Secchi disk and Chl-a are the most correlated parameters with ke. Moreover Secchi disk depth is nonlinearly correlated with ke, while linearly correlation is present between Chl-a and ke.

Genetic Diversity Of Sheep Breeds Focusing On Conservation Research In TurkeyAcan, Sinan Can 01 February 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In the first part of the present study, samples of 13 native Turkish sheep
breeds (n=628) were examined, individually and comparatively, with respect
to their 19 microsatellite loci to characterize them by employing various
statistical analyses. Low FST values, high mean number of alleles and allelic
richness as well as results of Factorial Correspondence Analysis and
Structure analyses showed the degree of admixture between native sheep
breeds of Turkey, IVE and SAK were observed as the most distincts of the
breeds and possible introgressions were detected in other breeds. The 2-
BAD, a software to examine the admixtures, was employed to estimate the
time of the admixtures and the MSVAR software was employed to detect
past demographic histories. In the second part, evaluations based on their
genetic characteristics were made in relation to their prioritization in
conservation studies. By employing four different approaches, it has been
concluded that IVE, SAK, KRY, KIV, HEM and breed from Central Anatolia
should be included in a conservation program for the preservation of
optimum genetic diversity. In the last part of the thesis breeds were also
characterized with respect to their relative risk of extinctions and their merits,
which were used to estimate the utilities of the breeds. Non-genetic factors,
collected based on the existing literature and surveys throughthe
questionnaires filled by the field specialists, were incorporated into genetic
factors to estimate the utilities of the breeds under different scenarios. In this
approach, it is concluded that NOR, AKK, SAK, IVE and HEM should be
included in the conserved set of breeds.
By the present study, it is believed that specific genetic features of the native
Turkish sheep breeds were documented, effects of sampling on the
population genetic studies was discussed, the need for a reliable data
(genetic and nongenetic, for characterizing the risks and merits of the
breeds) for the prioritization of the breeds in the long term sustainable
conservation ofthem was emphasized.

The aim of this study is to test theories of the effects of habitat size, connectivity, area protection, habitat amount and fragmentation on the occurrence of single species, plus examining the existence of a fragmentation threshold and an extinction threshold. Occurrence of stiff clubmoss Lycopodium annotinum and stag’s-horn clubmoss Lycopodium clavatum was examined in 61 forest fragments scattered over 10 large 2,5×2,5 km plots, located in the county of Stockholm in Sweden. In each forest an area covering 500m2 was searched for the two species. Lycopodium annotinum occured in 13 and L. clavatum in 10 of the investigated fragments. Lycopodium annotinum occurred in at least 1 fragment in 7 large plots, 8 large plots was the corresponding number for L. clavatum. The results showed a significant positive effect of habitat size on the occurrence of both species and a significant positive effect of connectivity on the occurrence of Lycopodium clavatum. Area protection, habitat amount and fragmentation had no observed effect on the occurrence of these species, and no fragmentation threshold or extinction threshold was found. These results indicate the importance of preserving large forest fragments with high connectivity, to assure continued viability of the examined species.

A Component Analysis of Function-Based Intervention: The Role of the Extinction ProcedureJanney, Donna M. January 2009 (has links)
The primary purpose of this study was to test the assumption that function-based interventions developed using the Function-Based Intervention Decision Model (Umbreit, Ferro, Liaupsin, & Lane, 2007) must consist of three method elements (i.e., adjustment of antecedent conditions, providing appropriate reinforcement for replacement behaviors, and eliminating reinforcement for target behaviors) for an optimal effect on changing behavior. In this study, the contribution of the extinction procedure was examined with three elementary school-aged students who were at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders. The study was conducted in two phases. Phase 1 consisted of a descriptive FBA involving assessment and intervention development. Phase 2 consisted of data collection in three conditions: baseline, intervention consisting of all three method elements, and intervention consisting of only antecedent adjustments and reinforcement of replacement behavior. Intervention phases were systematically introduced to each student using a multi-element reversal design (A-B-A-B-C-B) and resulted in improvements in the intervention conditions. Interventions using all three method elements were more effective in increasing replacement behaviors and decreasing target behaviors than those in which the extinction procedure was removed. Social validity using the Intervention Rating Profile-15 and Children's Intervention Rating Profile resulted in high acceptability ratings for interventions consisting of all three method elements. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed.

Ecologically viable population sizes: Determining factorsSellman, Stefan January 2010 (has links)
The minimum ecologically viable population size (MEVP) of a species describes the minimum size at which the species itself or another species in the same ecosystem goes extinct as a result of the loss of inter-specific interactions. The MEVP shows a good potential for use as a tool for exploring the mechanisms behind species extinctions, but presently only a small amount of research has been done that takes advantage of this. In this study the MEVP is used to investigate what properties of species can be used as good indicators of ecological importance. 100 large computer generated food webs were created with an assembly model and the reduction in density that was necessary to induce an extinction event in the web was subsequently determined for each species within the webs. This change in density was then correlated with 28 different properties, measured for each species. The results show that properties that measure how well connected a species is, as well as measures of the species role as a prey item in the web are the ones with the greatest potential to find species with high MEVP. Further, the results put emphasis on the importance of regarding the web as a whole when working with species extinctions, while also highlighting the usefulness of the MEVP concept.

Young stars and interstellar extinction in the North America and Pelican nebulae / Jaunos žvaigždės ir tarpžvaigždinė ekstinkcija Šiaurės Amerikos ir Pelikano debesyseLaugalys, Vygandas 01 April 2010 (has links)
A Milky Way region in the direction of the North America and Pelican Nebulae is investigated using CCD photometry of 2600 stars in the Vilnius seven-color system. Its central part was covered with a CCD camera on the Maksutov wide-field telescope of the Moletai Observatory. Deeper CCD exposures for most interesting selected targets were taken with the 1 m telescope of the USNO Flagstaff Station. The author developed a new method for CCD data processing trying to reduce systematic errors and to increase photometric accuracy. This allowed us to measure M67 stars with high precision and use it as a CCD standard region in all our subsequent observations. To investigate interstellar extinction law in the area we obtained spectra for 33 B-type stars with the 2.3 m telescope of Steward Observatory at Kitt Peak. We also used near-infrared 2MASS data and other data sources when they were available. From photometric results in the Vilnius system we determined two-dimensional spectral types, color excesses, interstellar extinctions and distances of ~1300 stars. For more accurate determination of open cluster ages we recalibrated the zero-age main sequence in absolute magnitude vs. color diagram of the Vilnius system. We also investigated the possible connection between two open clusters in the area and surrounding star-forming region. Young stellar objects and possible ionizing sources of the NAP gas clouds were identified. / Naudojant CCD fotometriją, ištirta Paukščių Tako sritis Šiaurės Amerikos ir Pelikano ūkų kryptimi. Neuronale Korrelate von Placeboeffekt, Furchtextinktion und willentlicher Emotionsregulation / Eine Metaanalyse über die Regulation negativer Gefühle / Neural correlates of placebo effect, fear extinction, cognitive emotion regulation / A meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies on the regulation of negative affectGeier, Katharina 12 August 2014 (has links)
