Weapons for Peace or War? The Role of Military Independence in Militarized Interstate Disputes

Thorne, Nicholas Owen January 2016 (has links)
The global trade in weaponry has created an environment in which states are now utilizing arms transfer agreements to bolster their own domestic defense industry aspirations. Previous research concerning arms transfers has suggested that a state may alter its behavior depending on its level of dependency on foreign sourced weapons. However, previous scholarship primarily examined the effect from importing arms and not the effect that military industry will have upon state behavior. Since the number of states possessing domestic defense industries has risen by 250% since 1950, it is paramount that we understand the effect of a domestic military industry on state behavior. To explore this problem, this dissertation utilizes militarized interstate dispute and arms procurement data. 3 primary independence variables are created, all of which measure military independence in different ways. These variables include, military industry presence, arms supplier diversification, and foreign dependence on military goods. The dissertation hypothesizes that the level of military independence will have an effect on the probability that a state will be involved, initiate as well as decrease dispute duration.

Stimulating Industrial Development in Uganda through Open Innovation Business Incubators

Mutambi, Joshua January 2011 (has links)
There are many existing programs and initiatives in Uganda supporting small businesses, but tend to suffer from a number of weaknesses. In particular typically small businesses find it difficult to do research and development; commercialize their results in markets (innovation) as fast as they should. For micro, small & medium enterprises to be dully competitive in a competitive economic environment requires that they develop internal capabilities to effectively assimilate, use and adapt product and process technologies for their businesses to survive on an ongoing basis. To overcome this drawback, the concept of Business Incubation has been proposed. This concept has gained large interest in the research community. The key idea is to create and nurture new businesses for growth by providing services and infrastructure required by utilizing the external knowledge sources (open innovation) and triple-helix model which assist formation of business and industrial clusters. A business incubator is an organization that supports the creation and growth of new businesses by providing services and infrastructure that is required by the targeted clients. Given that most firms in developing countries start too small to compete especially in international markets, a pre-requisite to industrial development, governments and policy makers should give particular attention to the constraints and needs of MSMEs. This can be done by adopting a mix of policies and framework conditions to reduce on the obstacles that hamper technological innovation, collaboration and business growth. In particular is access to finance and enhancing technology and business capacity development through training, linkages and networks. This Licentiate thesis discusses and reviews the initiatives and programs aimed at supporting the development of MSMEs with a view to stimulate industrial development in Uganda. The main aim of this research is to examine the process of business incubation and explain the contribution of open innovation business incubators to entrepreneurs/ start-up firms within the broader context of developing entrepreneurship, promoting science, technology and innovation and creating employment. This research focuses on the roles and relationships of government, university and research institutions and the private sector as sources of knowledge for technological innovations. Literature review, theory understanding, and participatory methods including group discussions with questionnaires, meetings and interviews, were used to achieve the objectives. From the findings, it was revealed among MSMEs that due to their sizes, limited managerial and technological skills, and inadequate functional business support services have had adverse effects on their upgrading and growth. There was little linkage and follow up between industry and other public research sectors i.e. government agencies and higher institutions although there are quite a number of support institutions with poor coordination. The research analyzed a wide range of issues that are related to the desired structural transformation of the Ugandan economy towards industrialization process. Finally it will propose strategies for the most appropriate model for Uganda.

Les mutations successives d'un espace enclavé et déshérité : Industrialisation et désindustrialisation dans la vallée du Rimbach du XVIIIe siècle à nos jours / The successive changes of an enclosed and deprived area : Industrialization and deindustrialization in the Rimbach

Risacher, Bertrand 16 December 2010 (has links)
Within a restricted geographical setting, the Rimbach valley, this doctoral thesis studies in an exhaustive way all the aspects of an economic and social evolution, marked by the phenomenon of industrialization, from the 18th century to our days. This thesis has thus permitted to discover a local area of industrialization which reinforces the diversity of the French economic development. This research is restricted to the Rimbach valley, but by replacing this area within the whole Alsatian area, we can bring new information about pre-industrialization, the process of industrialization and its specificity in relation to the great industry in Haut-Rhin, the economic evolution confronted to the problem of borders (because of their changes in 1870, 1919, 1939 and 1945), the great industrial transformation since 1945, but also confronted to the social disruptions, the political consequences and the environmental impact. The Rimbach valley, to a small scale, has been the scene of all these evolutions. This thesis brings the irrefutable evidence that such a tiny microcosm is the perfect reflection of the varying fortunes of industrialization. The contribution brought in this thesis is therefore indisputable in a more accurate knowledge of a Vosges valley with its true specificities. From the economic history point of view, it highlights methods of productive continuity to a local scale, which show with evidence that there are capacities of local action often hidden by more all-embracing tendencies. Finally, it destroys the monolithic and linear vision of an industrializing, de-industrializing and re-industrializing Europe, on new grounds, showing the significance of transitions. Therefore, the Rimbach valley deserves its true place in the great European industrial story, and a really particular place in certain respects.

Exploring the nature of policy support in value- adding and upgrading as a tool to industrial development: the case of the Zimbabwean cotton to textiles value chain

Chigumira, Gillian Pedzisai January 2017 (has links)
A research report submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Master’s Degree in Development Theory and Policy, March 2017 / It has been the objective of the Zimbabwean government since 2009 to arrest deindustrialisation, embody reindustrialisation as the essence for development and structural transformation from production of primary goods to manufacturing of value added goods for the domestic and export market. The President of Zimbabwe traversed that “industrialization is the essence of development, industrial production creates job opportunities at higher skill levels, facilitates more useful links across the agricultural, mining and service sectors, between rural and urban economies, and across consumer, intermediate and capital goods industries” (Ministry of Industry and Commerce, 2012: v). As such one of the economic components, through which re-industrialisation is envisioned is the value-addition of cotton through supporting downstream industries in textiles and clothing. This objective has been seen gradually through all of its policies post crisis or since dollarization. This is illustrated for example in the in the Short Term Emergency Recovery Programme (STERP) of 2009 were textiles and ginning are identified under strategically targeted industries. In the Industrial Development Policy of 2012 -2016, it is also stated that “whilst in Zimbabwe it might appear that the industrial value chain is complete; in sectors such as cotton, iron and steel and sugar, the level of transformation beyond primary processing still needs to be enhanced” [and so] “the Government has identified four (4) priority sectors as the pillars and engine for this IDP 2012–2016, namely Agri-business (Food and beverages, Clothing and Textiles, Leather & Footwear and Wood and Furniture)….”, (Ministry of Industry and Commerce, 2012: 11,17). With this background in mind, the broader problem this research is trying to solve is how the government through its objectives has sort to address de-industrialisation and re-industrialize through support of value addition and upgrading processes. Therefore, my research will focus on the evolution of cotton to textiles value chain and investigate how much value-addition has been employed to cotton products locally and for exports but only up to the point of textiles; what market conditions, forces and industry initiatives/strategies influenced the attempts to increase value added, and how successful or not these have been ; what policies both broader industrial and macroeconomic and sector-specific policies are in place or have been implemented to support the growth of cotton to textiles value added or shifting into higher value added production and what the impact of the cotton to textile industry has been towards industrial development. / XL2018

Arquitetura industrial em Soracaba: o caso das fábricas têxteis / Industrial architecture in Sorocaba: the case of textile factories

Massari, Marco Antônio Leite 29 April 2011 (has links)
This master\'s degree dissertation discourses about the industrialization of Sorocaba (SP), having as a case study the early big textile industries of the town, founded between the years of 1881 and 1913. These are the following: Fábrica Nossa Senhora da Ponte, Fábrica Santa Rosália, Fábrica Santa Maria, Alvejaria, Tinturaria e Estamparia São Paulo e Fábrica Santo Antônio. Inserted in the set of themes of industrial heritage, we have sought to talk about the reasons for these specimens to be worth of preservation, by analyzing what was done by the Public Law and by the civil society in favor of this objective and by exposing several incongruences in the way how this preservation took place. Based on a rich photographic documentation, we sought to present a historical survey of the five factories, pointing out the interrelations existing among them, from the foundation until the present days. Apart from that, we also made use of documents related to the processes of governmental trust, along with an extensive research in seasonable newspapers, interviews with former employees and old owners, and likewise visitations to sites, thus allowing a comprehensive picture of the objects of study. In the end, we emphasized not having collected definite answers to the researched questions, but inquiries for future new researches that might bring hope that modifying the attitude towards these movables might be possible, both from the preservation public agencies\' side and from the Sorocabana society\'s in general, thus assuring that the forthcoming generations may have access to the massive knowledge of which those movables, veritable historical documents, are detainers.

Partel, Henrique 20 October 2000 (has links)
The brazilian code for design of timber structures were recently revised to consider the concepts of limit states design. There was a fundamental alteration in the process for design of wooden structures. The aim of this study is the identification of the pertinent aspects of the design process for industrialized trussed timber structures for roofing, and the development of a software for structural analysis and design of structural members (truss members, metal plate connected joints, purlins and rafters) based on the standard NBR 7190 - Projeto de Estruturas de Madeira - Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (1997).

The swine production chain still has some gaps, especially as the dead animals on farms destinations. Among the destinations, the industrialization of flour of animal origin (FAO) can be an alternative of recycling biological waste, where the product resulting from the process could be used in the agricultural industry. The lack of studies in the area and restrictions on the use of mortality for any purpose other than controlled decomposition limit information on the risks that this activity could generate in animal and human health and environmental balance. Thus, the objective of this study was to achieve a qualitative microbiological risk assessment of flour of animal origin (FAO) aiming to provide subsidies to indicate the possible hazards and risks associated with the use of flour produced from pigs dead on farms. The results evaluated from FAO suggest that if the conditions of industrialization were carried out adequately, considering time/temperature after slaughter, the risk may be insignificant; but there is a possibility of recontamination after cooling, with Salmonella being the most reported hazard in scientific studies, presenting low to very high risk levels. In addition to the microbiological hazard, chemical hazards such as the biogenic amines generated in the decomposition process may also be present in the FAO, which potentially could compromise not only animal health but also consumers of animal products. However, the conditions of viability of the process of removal and packing of the dead animals cannot be disregarded to obtain an estimate with a lower degree of uncertainty. From the information provided and the scenarios considered, it was not possible to indicate the flour production of animal origin as a probable destination for animals dead on swine farms.
