Joaquim, Felipe Ferreira. January 2018 (has links)
The present thesis aims at the practice of workshops as an educational modality. It is not intended to analyze the contribution of this format to the field of Education, but to highlight the potentialities that can derive from such practice making use of language and its textual possibilities. The work is organized in three volumes, which are inspired by literary texts and unfold in diverse forms for the discussion of language. The first deals with a lyrical narrative inspired by Dante's Comedy; the second is an epistolary prose interspersed with short stories inspired by the work of Italo Calvino; and the third, an essay on Science, Education and workshops written from a review on the topic. Each volume has a distinct textual construction mode, from the arrangement of citations and transcripts of research empirical material. In the fashion of a workshop conceiving it as a space of knowledge in movement, the process of accomplishing this work is close to what can be the production of thought in situations of experimentation with language / Doutor

The House of Uncommon Grounds

Arbabi, Lida January 2012 (has links)
Demographically open public spaces provide valuable grounds for engaging diverse ideologies. While the rise of society and passive consumption of mass culture excludes “action” and “speech” from the public realm and threatens human plurality, a public space in which to hold public debates and discussions will reengage public roles in the public realm. And it will consequently act as a new site for citizenship and new “space of appearance.” Such space becomes even more essential in a society that dreads conflict. Focusing on Iranian society, the proposal integrates this overlooked opportunity by offering temporary debate interventions to be used around the Iranian cities on a regular basis, envisioning a culture of dialogue incrementally developing. This is a way of approaching a sociological issue with the help of Architecture, making a role for public space in promoting a culture, a culture that encourages human plurality and appreciates engaging the wide range of diverse ideologies, convictions and viewpoints. Rather than proposing a closed narrative and one single architectural solution for the space of public debate, the thesis imagines an architectural toolkit for application to the specific cultural and urban context.

An examination of debater and judge perceptions in debate

Weaver, Ann Christine Barabe January 1977 (has links)
This thesis is a descriptive study investigating the perceptions of 380 debaters and 95 judges at seven collegiate debate tournaments. The study examined debater/ judge agreement in terms of win/loss, speaker ratings and criteria important in the debate decision. A Kappa index and Pearson product-moment correlation were used to analyze the data. The findings indicated that debaters and judges do not tend to perceive the debate decision, speaker ratings or important criteria similarly.
