Previous issue date: 2012-04-09 / This study assessed the level of knowledge, attitude and practice of Pap smear and
human papillomavirus (HPV), in addition to analyzing the prevalence of genital HPV
infection, Herpes Simplex Type 2 (HSV-2) and Chlamydia trachomatis in teenagers.
The study consisted of two approaches, one based only on interviews conducted
with adolescents enrolled in public schools or in public health facilities in the city of
Natal. The other approach involved only a group of 132 adolescents enrolled among
those admitted to two health units in Natal-RN. This second group of participants
two specimens were collected for laboratory analysis: one was directed to prepare
the blade for the Pap test, and other processed for DNA extraction for molecular
analysis, focusing on the detection of HPV, HSV-2 and C . trachomatis. The
presence of DNA of the three pathogens was investigated by the technique of
polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The presence of each of the three pathogens was
analyzed in terms of socio-demographic characteristics, as well as sexual and
reproductive activity to identify risk factors for infection and development of lesions
of the uterine cervix. The results show that the adolescents in this study had levels
of knowledge and attitude very low, both in relation to cytology to HPV as though
they have made a reasonable percentage of adequate practice exam and
prevention of HPV infection. The overall prevalence of HPV infection was 54.5% and
48.2% in adolescents with normal cytology and 86.4% in those with abnormal
cytology. We observed a higher proportion of cases of infection in the age group of
18 to 21. The prevalence of HPV infection was slightly higher among pregnant
teenagers. The overall prevalence of HSV-2 infection was 13.6% and 11.8% in
women with normal cytology and 22.7% in those with abnormal cytology. A higher
proportion of cases of infection was found in the age group from 14 to 17, with a
slightly higher prevalence among pregnant women. The C. trachomatis was found
with an overall prevalence of 19.7% and 21.8% in adolescents with normal cytology
and 9.1% in those with abnormal cytology. The prevailing rate was highest in the
age group 18 to 21 years and in nonpregnant / O presente estudo avaliou o grau de conhecimento, atitude e pr?tica do exame de
A outra
A taxa

Some demographic aspects of women's access to land for farming in South Africa: a comparison from 2004 to 2007Nyirasafari, Philomene January 2009 (has links)
Magister Philosophiae - MPhil / The issue of women's access to land is a developmental issue. From a fundamental research view point, this study aims to explore the circumstances in which women access land in South Africa. The study examines the inequalities that may arise in the context of land access, land acquisition; land use, activities taking place on land and closely related issues focusing specifically on women in general, and women headed households in particular. The study is based on demographic characteristics such as age, gender, marital status, occupational groups, education, province of residence and ethnic groups. Bringing together the demographic variables and land related variables, the study captures the structural changes between 2004 and 2007. Using 2004 and 2007 GHS secondary data requested from Statistics South Africa, cross tabulation and bivariate statistical analysis by means of SPSS software was performed. The results obtained indicate that the inequality against women's access to land still persists. Some women have access to land for agricultural purpose but few own it. The findings suggest that a number of factors including age, place of residence, marital status, ethnic group, literacy, educational level, of women are associated with the ability of women to access and acquire land. The sustainable livelihood framework is a theory that guided this study. Diversification is commonly used to prevent time of risks and shocks. In general, the study shows that the proportion of women who had access to land was 16% in 2004. This figure dropped to 14% in 2007. / South Africa

Nákupné správanie segmentu seniorov / Purchase behavior of segment of seniorsAntalíková, Eva January 2012 (has links)
The aim of thesis is to evaluate how elder people (seniors) perceive the product offer on the Czech market and the marketing activities of Czech companies. The thesis is focused on the seniors characteristics and specific features of their consumer behavior. The thesis is divided into two major parts: a theoretical and a practical one. The theoretical part is principally dedicated to reviewing basic marketing concepts and procedures for market segmentation and also to factors that affect it. There are mentioned few basic types of segmentation as well as the criteria commonly used for market segmentation. A separate chapter is devoted to a consumer and the factors that influence consumer's purchase decisions. The practical part is focused particularly on the specific features of the Czech consumer and the charakcteristics of the elder consumers. A chapter is devoted not only to statistical data of demographic and socio-economic nature, but also to characteristics of the elder people in terms of sociological perspective. The final part is devoted to the analysis of senior's purchase decision making, arising from the results of the interview survey, and to senior's opinions about marketing and a product offer on the Czech market.

An Index of Interpersonal Communicative Competence and Its Relationship to Selected Supervisory Demographics, Self-Actualization and Leader Behavior in OrganizationsVaught, Bobby C. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was basically twofold: 1) to develop an evaluative instrument to measure interpersonal communicative competence, and 2) to determine its relationship to three other supervisory variables—demographic characteristics, self-actualization, and leader behavior. Hypotheses testing, via the Pearson correlation coefficient, indicated the following relationships between interpersonal communicative competence (as measured by the IICC) and supervisory demographics, self-actualization (as measured by the POI), and leader behavior (as measured by the SBDQ): 1) The age of the supervisor was negatively related to the IICC at the .001 level of statistical significance. 2) Years of formal education was positively related to the IICC at the .001 level. 3) The sex of the supervisor (females scoring higher) was related to the IICC at the .01 level. 4) No significant relationship existed between years of supervisory experience and the IICC. 5) Six scales of the POI (I, Ex, Fr, S, A, C) were related to the IICC at the .001 level of statistical significance, one scale (Sy) at the .01 level and two scales (Tc, Sa) at the .05 level. Three scales (SAV, Sr, Nc) were not significantly related to the IICC. 6) No significant relationship existed between the IICC and the two dimensions of leader behavior—structure and consideration.

An analysis of the relationship between economic development and demographic characteristics in the United StatesHeyne, Chad M. 01 May 2011 (has links)
Over the past several decades there has been extensive research done in an attempt to determine what demographic characteristics affect economic growth, measured in GDP per capita. Understanding what influences the growth of a country will vastly help policy makers enact policies to lead the country in a positive direction. This research focuses on isolating a new variable, women in the work force. As well as isolating a new variable, this research will modify a preexisting variable that was shown to be significant in order to make the variable more robust and sensitive to recessions. The intent of this thesis is to explore the relationship between several demographic characteristics and their effect on the growth rate of GDP per capita. The first step is to reproduce the work done by Barlow (1994) to ensure that the United States follows similar rules as the countries in his research. Afterwards, we will introduce new variables into the model, comparing the goodness of fit through the methods of R-squared, AIC and BIC. There have been several models developed to answer each of the research questions independently.

A study of the membership of the national FFA alumni association: volunteering, loyalty, and benefitsGossen, Larry Alan January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Curriculum and Instruction Programs / Steven R. Harbstreit / There has been little research conducted related to the National FFA Alumni Association since its establishment in 1971. The purposes of this study were to determine the demographic characteristics of the membership of the National FFA Alumni Association, determine whether differences exist regarding members’ motivation to join and engage themselves in the local FFA Alumni affiliate, and whether differences exist in members’ loyalty to the FFA Alumni at the national and local levels based on their level of engagement. This descriptive study utilized survey research to accomplish the purpose, assessing the motivational functions for volunteering and measuring loyalty to the local FFA Alumni affiliate and the National FFA Alumni Association. The population of this study was the membership of the National FFA Alumni Association for the 2009-2010 membership year (N = 49,589). A proportional stratified random sample (n = 1,000) was used to identify study participants and ensure representation from the four membership regions of the National FFA Alumni Association. Based on a final usable sample (n = 913), the researcher obtained a final response rate of 43.7% (n = 399).
The National FFA Alumni Association is comprised of predominantly white, male, college-educated, actively engaged former FFA members with an average age of 49.6 years. The results of independent sample t-tests indicated a significant difference between male and female members in the importance they place on six motivations for volunteering. Female members were considerably higher in the motivational functions of values, understanding, enhancement, social, career, and protective. A correlation analysis also indicated that age of the respondents played a role in the motivation to volunteer. Older members were less motivated in the areas of career, understanding, values, and enhancement. Paired samples t-tests determined members were significantly more loyal to the local FFA Alumni affiliate than the National FFA Alumni Association. There was also a significant difference in the loyalty of members based on their level of engagement with a local FFA Alumni affiliate with more highly engaged members expressing more loyalty to the association.

The role of socio-demographics, personality characteristics, social support, and well-being in student's intention to drop out / Kelly Periera CortesCortes, Kelly Periera January 2012 (has links)
Student intention to drop out is a concern for higher education institutions as well for their students. Students with the intention to drop out may eventually drop out and contribute towards the already high dropout rates, which are causing economic damage. Students leaving their institution have vast financial consequences for their institution, as institutions obtain grants from the government according to their success rates. Although previous research has been conducted on students’ intention to drop out, it is limited, especially when looking at possible predictors that are specific to the South African context. This study contributes towards the gap in research regarding the possible predictors of student intention to drop out.
The objectives of this study were to 1) conceptualise the possible predictors of student intention to drop out according to the literature; 2) determine if self-evaluation traits (self-esteem and self-efficacy) are significant predictors of student intention to drop out; 3) determine if student burnout and student engagement are significant predictors of student intention to drop out; 4) determine if social support (social support from parents and general social support) are significant predictors of student intention to drop out; and 5) determine if career decision-making difficulties are significant predictors of student intention to drop out.
A non-probability quota sample (N = 782) was used to investigate possible predictors of career student intention to drop out in a sample of university students. Student intention to drop out was measured by one item consisting of two categories: I have no intention to drop out (n = 501), and I have an intention to drop out (n = 280). These two groups were enclosed as a dependent variable in the logistic regression.
The variables included in the final model predicted between 13% (Cox and Snell) and 18% (Nagelkerke) of the variance in intention to drop out. The results of this study suggest that self-esteem had an influence on student intention to drop out. Furthermore, it was found that cynicism and dedication have a significant relationship with student intention to drop out. Lastly, lack of information about ways to obtain information also indicated a significant relationship with student intention to drop out. Thus, it may be concluded that self-esteem, burnout and engagement and lack of information about ways of obtaining information have an influence on students’ intention to drop out.
Recommendations were made for practice as well as for future research. / Thesis (MCom (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012
