Waste sorting : A proposed social design workshop to improve behaviour and management of recycling.

This study and design concept explores the need for a change of the behaviour and recycling knowledge in Nybro Municipality, situated in Eastern Sweden.  The main aim of this study is to provide support for discussion and act as an inspiration for the future development of projects with participatory citizenship. Additionally, to invigorate the need for a sustainable and circular waste management to reach sustainable development.  The theoretical framework set up for this study focus on sustainable development, citizens’ behaviour and knowledge of recycling. The explorative research stage of the project is performed through several methods, including interviews with current waste management companies and Nybro Municipality’s Sustainability Department. Furthermore, a survey of the citizens of Nybro municipality, to investigate the behaviour and knowledge about recycling. Correspondingly, relevant secondary research and compulsory review of the context, waste management and circular economy in Sweden, but also the behaviour within recycling of the system users - citizens, is being examined. The project focuses on sorting and analysing the data and findings by using methods of several different visual thinking tools.  The outcome of the project is a proposal of a design concept to facilitate the recycling of waste for the citizens as the users. Moreover, to emphasize the need and importance of recycling our everyday waste materials. This project is not a solution-based project, but more widely to provide a basis for discussion and inspire.  The goal is to find a way that encourages citizens to recycle waste from products purchased in their daily living. A social design workshop, focusing on circular waste management and recycling behaviour, together with the citizens living in Nybro municipality, will be proposed and co-designed with the municipality’s sustainability department of Nybro Municipality.

Co-design workshops om stigmatiserade ämnen : Designförslag för att undvika ytterligare stigmatisering

Co-design workshops (CDW) kan förbättra idégenereringen i designprocessen. CDW grundar sig i att människor ska arbeta tillsammans i realtid men vid forskning om stigmatiserade ämnen kan det vara svårt att genomföra den öga mot öga på grund av stigman. Tidigare forskning visar en större komplexitet med att forska om stigmatiserade ämnen inom human-computer interaction (HCI). Det finns en stor risk för att stigmatisera deltagarna ytterligare eftersom forskningen ofta involverar att designa tillsammans. Syftet med studien är att få kunskap om hur designers kan stöttas vid genomförandet av CDW om stigmatiserade ämnen för att inte stigmatisera deltagarna ytterligare, samt att främja inkludering av människor som upplever stigma i co-design vid design av digitala produkter och tjänster som berör dem. En designorienterad studie har genomförts där designförslag har tagits fram baserat på litteratur. Designförslagen har inkorporerats i en artefakt som i denna studie är en process i form av en CDW som också användes för att utvärdera och testa upplevelsen av CDW med stigmatiserade ämnen. Resultatet av studien är fyra designförslag kopplat till social sårbarhet, känslomässiga reaktioner, initiativtagande och skillnader i kunskap. Dessa kan användas vid genomförandet av CDW om stigmatiserade ämnen för att inte skapa obehag hos deltagarna eller stigmatisera ytterligare. / Co-design workshops (CDW) can improve the production of ideas in the design process. CDW is based on people working together in real time, but when researching stigmatized subjects, it can be difficult to carry out the research eye to eye due to the stigma. Previous research shows a greater complexity in researching stigmatized subjects in human-computer interaction (HCI). There is a great risk of further stigmatizing the participants because the research often involves designing together. The purpose of the study was to gain knowledge about how designers can be supported in the implementation of CDW on stigmatized subjects to prevent further stigmatizing participants, and to encourage the inclusion of people who experience stigma in co-design when designing digital products and services that affect them. A design-oriented study has been carried out where design suggestions have been developed based on literature. The design suggestions have been incorporated into an artifact which in this study is a process in the form of a CDW, which was also used to evaluate and test the experience of CDW with stigmatized subjects. The result of the study are four design suggestions connected to social vulnerability, emotional reactions, initiative and differences in knowledge. These can be used in the implementation of the CDW about stigmatized subjects to not create discomfort among the participants or further stigmatize.

Layer Based Auditory Displays Of Robots’ Actions And Intentions

Unintentional encounters between robots and humans will increase in the future and require concepts for communicating the robots’ internal states. Auditory displays can be used to convey the relevant information to people who share public spaces with social robots. Based on data gathered in a participatory design workshop with robot experts, a layer based approach for real-time generated audio feedback is introduced, where the information to be displayed is mapped to certain audio parameters. First exploratory sound designs were created and evaluated in an online study. The results show which audio parameter mappings should be examined further to display certain internal states, like e.g. mapping amplitude modulation to the robot’s speed or enhancing alarm frequencies for indicating urgent tasks. Features such as speed, urgency and large size were correctly identified in more than 50% of evaluations, while information about the robot’s interactivity or its small size were not comprehensible to the participants. / Oavsiktliga möten mellan robotar och människor kommer öka i framtiden vilket kräver koncept för att kommunicera robotarnas inre tillstånd. Ljuddisplayer kan användas för att förmedla relevant information till människor som delar offentliga utrymmen med sociala robotar. Baserat på data som samlats in i en deltagande designworkshop med robottexperter introduceras ett lagerbaserat tillvägagångssätt för realtidsgenererad ljudåterkoppling, där den information som ska visas mappas till vissa ljudparametrar. Explorativa ljuddesigns skapades och utvärderades i en online-studie. Resultaten visar vilka ljudparametrar som bör undersökas ytterligare för att visa vissa interna tillstånd, som t.ex. att mappa amplitudmodulering till robotens hastighet eller att förbättra larmfrekvenser för att indikera brådskande ärenden. Egenskaper som hastighet, brådska och stor storlek identifierades korrekt i mer än 50 % av utvärderingarna, men information om robotens interaktivitet och lilla storlek var svårbegriplig för deltagarna.

Distribuerade designworkshops med fysiskt workshop-kit : Hur engagemanget hos deltagarna i distribuerade workshops kan höjas / Distributed design workshops with a physical workshop kit : How the engagement of participants in distributed workshops can be increased

För att ta reda på vilka utmaningar designers upplever i samband med distribuerade workshops genomfördes en förstudie där designers intervjuades och utifrån intervjuerna kunde flera utmaningar identifieras. Bland annat var det utmanande att få deltagare engagerade, att få dialoger och samtal att fungera bra över videosamtal och att tekniken inte var tillräckligt lättanvänd för alla deltagare. Efter förstudien valdes en av dessa utmaningar ut som fokus för en uppföljningsstudie och utmaningen som valdes var att höja engagemanget hos deltagare i distribuerade designworkshops. För att undersöka detta genomfördes studien med designforsknignsmetoder där skisser och olika prototyper utformades och utvärderades. Den slutgiltiga prototypen av ett fysiskt workshop-kit testades i ett experiment med mellangruppsdesign där engagemanget mättes med User Engagement Scale. Efter workshoparna intervjuades även flera deltagare ur varje grupp om deras upplevelse.  Resultatet från User Engagement Scale påvisade inte någon statiskt signifikant skillnad mellan de två grupperna men i intervjuerna lyftes flera olika aspekter och attribut som bidrar till engagemanget, vare sig ett workshop-kit används eller ej. Inledningsvis behöver det väckas ett intresse genom det första intrycket och då är workshop-kitet en värdefull tillgång då det väcker intresse och spänning hos deltagarna genom den visuella utformningen och spänning inför vad det kan innehålla.   För att behålla engagemanget under workshopen är det viktigt att deltagarna får vara aktiva och interagera snarare än att vara passiva. När de själva är aktiva ökar deras anknytning till workshopen vilket bidrar till engagemanget. Det bidrar även ifall de får vara med och influera de olika momenten, exempelvis genom omröstningar eller att få ta ledaransvar under olika moment. Anknytning kan även skapas socialt i gruppen för att höja engagemanget. Workshop-kitet var utformat för att stötta den sociala interaktionen i gruppen, något som flera deltagare upplevde hade en positiv inverkan på gruppdynamiken och workshopen.  När fysiska artefakter utformas för workshops är det fördelaktigt ifall de är visuellt tilltalande och intresseväckande då det skapar spänning inför workshopen och de olika momenten, detta hjälper till att öka engagemanget. Att ha variation i workshopen bidrar även till bibehållandet av engagemanget hos deltagarna, workshop-kitet bör således bidra till variation och nya intresseväckande moment under workshopen. Vid utformandet av det fysiska workshop-kitet är det även viktigt att ha i åtanke att det behöver stötta den digitala workshopen samtidigt som den inte ersätter funktioner som fungerar bättre online och de fördelar som finns med online-verktyg. Utifrån detta rekommenderas det att de fysiska föremålen ska kunna användas av varje deltagare enskilt och att samarbetet inte bygger på att deltagarna kan se eller interagera med varandras artefakter. / In order to understand what challenges designers experience when facilitating distributed workshops, a study was conducted where designers were interviewed about their experiences. From this several challenges were identified, for example, that it is difficult to get participants engaged, to have group conversations over video call and that the technical tools might be too difficult to use for some workshop participants. After this, another study was performed focusing on the question of increasing the engagement of participants in distributed workshops. In order to answer this question, the study followed a research through design approach where sketches and prototypes were made and the final prototype of a physical workshop-kit was evaluated in an experiment with an experimental group and a control group. The User Engagement Scale was used to measure the engagement and after the workshops several interviews were conducted with participants about their experience participating.  The result from the Use Engagement Scale did not show a statistically significant difference between the two groups, however, several attributes and aspects contributing to engagement were mentioned in the interviews. To start with, there needs to be an interest that sparks the engagement, this can be done with the physical workshop kit since it looks interesting and makes the participants eager to know what it contains.   In order to maintain the engagement during the workshop it is important that the participants are kept active rather than passive, this creates a connection that increases the engagement. Another way to increase the connection is by letting the participants influence the workshop, for example through voting or by letting them take leadership in some activities in the workshop. There can also be a social connection in the group which increases the engagement and the workshop-kit was partly aimed at facilitating the social interaction in order to increase the engagement. This had a positive effect on the group dynamics and the workshop according to participants.  When physical artifacts are designed for a workshop it is beneficial if they are visually appealing and interesting since that creates interest leading up to the workshop, this interest increases the engagement. To have variation in the workshop also increases the engagement and thus the workshop-kit could be designed to support variation and new interesting activities during the workshop. Another aspect to keep in mind when designing a physical workshop-kit for distributed workshops is that it needs to support the digital workshop but at the same time not replace the strengths of the digital tools. Based on this it is recommended that the physical artifacts are designed to be used individually by the participants and that the cooperation does not build on the participants being able to see or interact with each other's artifacts. / <p>Framläggningen genomfördes på distans över videosamtal i Microsoft Teams.</p>
