Development of an object library for a design support systemDe Dios, Bettina G. 24 March 2009 (has links)
This thesis describes the development of an object library for a design support system presently being developed by the Fine Tools Group of the Architecture faculty. The object library is conceived as a library of “types” based on the premise that a major part of design solution is accomplished by reference to prior solutions. It contains graphical representations of physical objects that make up a building, wherein each object representation possesses the capability of being depicted as a building component or as a building product. The proposed object library is organized by a typology. The usage of terms in the typology, in turn, is controlled by a thesaurus which reflects an ordering of terms used to form object descriptors and contains classifiers derived from the CSI and CI/SfB classification systems. / Master of Architecture

Nabokov's Details: Making Sense of Irrational StandardsHorgan, Pelagia 20 December 2012 (has links)
Vladimir Nabokov's passion for detail is well-known, central to our very idea of the "Nabokovian." Yet Nabokov's most important claims for detail pose a challenge for the reader who would take them seriously. Startlingly extreme and deliberately counterintuitive -- Nabokov called them his "irrational standards" -- these claims push the very limits of reason and belief. Nabokov's critics have tended to treat his more extravagant claims for detail -- including his assertion that the "capacity to wonder at trifles" is the highest form of consciousness there is -- as just a manner of speaking, a form of italics, a bit of wishful thinking, a mandarin's glib performance, or an aesthete's flight of fancy. This dissertation, by contrast, asserts that Nabokov meant what he said, and sets out to understand what he meant. Nabokov's passion for detail, I argue, represents more than a stylistic preference or prescription for good noticing. Rather, it reflects and advocates for a special way of being in the world, of disposing or orienting oneself to things, and for this reason is best understood as part of a broad program of detailphilic habits, attitudes, practices and attunements Nabokov adhered to throughout his life. In making this argument, I draw on the work of a wide array of thinkers, including Descartes, Heidegger, Richard Rorty, Clifford Geertz, and Philip Fisher, and focus on three of Nabokov's texts in particular: Speak, Memory, Lolita, and "The Art of Literature and Commonsense." Making sense of Nabokov's irrational standards, I argue, helps us to make sense of a number of other critical puzzles as well, from what, exactly, Nabokov means by the word "reality" to what a cruel noticer like Humbert Humbert implies about the moral meaning of passionate attention.

Attention to Details : To challenge predetermined expressions within garments and accessories, through explorations of their details and giving them new meaning byabstraction.Persson, Josephine January 2018 (has links)
The primary purpose of this study is to investigate and challenge the predetermined silhouettes of street wear; silhouettes and identity that has been ”approved” by the structures of society. The study aims to open up for discussion, and explore the area in which might be considered to be ”wrongdoings”, in order to push the boundaries that we have set on the different components a garment can be built up with. The study was conducted with the method of deconstruction, to be able to fully understand the archetypes of garments and accessories within the chosen field. The focus laid on the details, and how one could abstract these and rework them into something else; another silhouette and purpose. The result shows garments that has pushed their on limitations in silhouettes and identity; opened up for other kinds of context, and embraces the possibilities of their details when it comes to shape.

shaping the air into spaces for the mind : the preciousness and role of intricate detailsStubi, Virginie January 2017 (has links)
Regardless of its size and scale, space remains space. The project explores the potential of small and intricate spaces to trigger stories and memories. These spaces become places for the mind to evade. As smallness resonates with preciousness, the dimensions of these spaces invite you to come closer, enter with the eye and the mind and let different scenarios unfold.

The Effects of Context-Dependency of Seductive Details on Recall and Transfer in a Multimedia Learning EnvironmentOzdemir, Devrim 25 June 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of context-dependency of seductive details on recall and transfer in multimedia learning environments. Two experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, the purpose was to identify context-dependent vs. context-independent seductive details in a lightning animation. Seductive details were considered as interesting yet irrelevant sentences in the narration of lightning animation. Sixty-seven undergraduate students participated in Experiment 1 and assigned interestingness scores to the 28 content irrelevant sentences. Participants were assigned to two different groups, context-dependent seductive details group (CDSD) and context-independent seductive details group (CISD). Participants in the CDSD group assigned interestingness scores after watching a lightning animation to be familiarized with the context of lightning formation. Participants in the CISD group watched a historical inquiry animation as a distraction task before assigning interestingness scores. The results of Experiment 1 revealed that 13 of 28 sentences in the lightning formation text were seductive details according to participants of the study. Ultimately, 6 of the 13 seductive details were determined to be context-dependent and 7 were determined to be seductive details were context-independent.
The purpose of Experiment 2 was to investigate the effects of context-dependency of seductive details on recall and transfer in multimedia learning environments. Undergraduate students (n = 184) were randomly assigned into four groups. Participants in all groups watched a lightning animation, and performed a recall and a transfer task. The first group watched an animation that did not include any seductive details. The second group watched the animation with context-dependent seductive details only. The third group watched the animation with context-independent seductive details only. The last group watched the animation with both types of seductive details. A 2x2 ANOVA for both recall and transfer, and contrast analyses were conducted to determine the effects of context-dependency of seductive details on recall and transfer. The results indicated that there was no significant effect of context-dependency of seductive details on recall or transfer. The findings are discussed in the context of the related literature and directions for future research are suggested. / Ph. D.
