Estimating Health Outcomes and Determinants in Rural Ottawa: An Integration of Geographical and Statistical Techniques

Mosley, Brian 12 November 2012 (has links)
Many health geography studies, including the Ottawa Neighbourhood Study (ONS), have faced significant challenges uncovering local variation in patterns of community health in rural areas. This is due to the fact that sparsely populated rural areas make it difficult to define neighbourhoods that are representative of the social and resource utilization patterns of the individuals therein. Moreover, rural areas yield small samples from population-based regional health surveys and this leads to insufficient sample sizes for reliable estimation of health determinants and outcomes. In response to this issue this thesis combines geographical and statistical techniques which allow for the simulation of health variables within small areas and populations within rural Ottawa. This methodological approach combines the techniques of dasymetric mapping and statistical micro-simulation in an innovative way, which will allow health geography researchers to explore health determinants and health outcomes at small spatial scales in rural areas. Dasymetric mapping is used to generate a statistical population surface over Ottawa and then estimate socio-economic (SES) variables within small neighbourhood units within rural Ottawa. The estimated SES variables are then used as correlate variables to simulate health determinant and health outcome variables form the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) using statistical micro-simulation. Through this methodology, simulations of specific health determinants and outcome can be investigated at small spatial scales within rural areas. Dasymetric mapping provided neighbourhood-level population estimates that were used to re-weight as set of SES variables that were correlates with those in the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS). These neighbourhood-level correlates allowed microsimulation and consequent spatial exploration of prevalence for smoking, binge drinking, obesity, self-rated mental health, and the presence of two or more chronic conditions. The methodology outlined in this paper, provides and innovative way of exploring health determinants and health outcomes in neighbourhoods for which population and health statistics are not traditionally collected at levels that would allow traditional statistical analyses of prevalence.

Influence of Estradiol on In vitro Maturation of Porcine Oocytes

Leavins, Nikki Lee 06 October 2011
<p><i>In vitro</i> production of embryos allows efficient management of herd genetics, reduction of disease impact, and if used in combination with other reproductive technologies it could aid in preserving the threatened genetic diversity of swine. <i>In vitro</i> maturation (IVM) is identified as a deficient step in porcine in vitro production (IVP) of embryo systems, which decreases the overall success of IVP. There are problems encountered in each step of IVP; chromosomal abnormalities and decreased cell numbers in blastocysts during <i>in vitro</i> culturing (IVC), and low monospermic fertilization rates during <i>in vitro</i> fertilization (IVF) may be a result of insufficient IVM. As an addition to maturation media, porcine follicular fluid (pFF) can affect IVM. Estrogen can be found in high concentrations in pFF; possibly contributing to the effects seen when pFF is added to IVM. The objective of this thesis was to investigate the effects of estrogen supplementation during IVM on IVP of porcine embryos.</p> <p>The first objective was to evaluate the <i>in vitro</i> maturation rates of porcine oocytes in two maturation media: protein-free and 10% pFF supplemented. Nuclear maturation of oocytes was evaluated using Lamin/Dapi staining of oocytes matured in protein-free and 10% pFF maturation media to ensure the efficiency of the protein-free media. Protein-free and 10% pFF media mature oocytes at similar rates (91% and 89% respectively).</p> <p>The transcripts within the oocyte can be altered based on the <i>in vitro</i> maturation environment, so the second objective was to observe the expression of four chosen maternal effect genes: Basonuclin-1 (<i>BNC1</i>), Nucleoplasmin 2 (<i>NPM2</i>), Zygote arrest 1 (<i>ZAR1</i>), and Tripartite-motif protein-24 (<i>TRIM24</i>), using oocytes matured in 50 ng/ml, 100 ng/ml, or 1000 ng/ml of estradiol 17-&beta; (E2), 10% pFF, or protein-free maturation media. Expression of maternal effect genes, was shown by the &Delta;Ct (cycle threshold) values, obtained from the difference between the Ct values of the normalizing gene (<i>GAPDH</i>) and the genes of interest evaluated through QRT-PCR. Values of &Delta;Ct were analyzed in place of fold change to avoid data manipulation. The &Delta;Ct expression of <i>TRIM24</i> in 0 ng/ml E2 maturation medium and the 10% pFF maturation medium were significantly different (p<0.05) from the non-matured control, the other maternal determinant genes did not differ in their expression under any treatment.</p> <p>We hypothesized that estradiol's effects on IVM would be evident when analyzing cleavage and blastocyst formation rates. Cleavage and blastocyst formation rates were examined following <i>in vitro</i> fertilization of oocytes matured in 100 ng/ml E2, 10% pFF, or a protein-free maturation medium to investigate the effect of estradiol on IVP embryos. Cleavage rates for the E2 (n= 252; 60.2%) or 10% pFF (n= 256; 55.7%) additions to the maturation media did not differ (p>0.05) when compared to the protein-free maturation media (n=264; 54.9%). Both 10% pFF and E<syb>2 groups had significantly higher blastocyst formation rates (p&le;0.05) than the protein-free maturation media (n=264; 3.5%), although no statistical difference was observed between the blastocyst formation rates of the 10% pFF (n=256; 12.4%) and E2 (n=252; 14.6%) groups.</o> <p>As a final study, the global gene expression of oocytes matured in a control protein-free media and the protein-free media supplemented with 100 ng/ml E2 or 10% pFF was investigated using microarray analysis. Genes were not differentially expressed among the matured groups with the outlined threshold values of -2 &ge; log2(fold change) &ge; 2, and adjusted p-value &le;0.05. A total of 16 differentially expressed genes between the non-matured and all matured groups exceeded this threshold. Of these genes, 6 are novel transcribed regions with evidence of being an embryonic EST, and 1 is a novel protein-coding gene. The other genes are FBJ murine osteosarcoma viral oncogene homolog (<i>FOS</i>), Vimentin (<i>VIM</i>), Capthesin C (<i>CTSC</i>), Selenium binding protein 1 (<i>SELENBP1</i>), Poly(A) binding protein cytoplasmic 1 (<i>PABPC1</i>), Tissue factor pathway inhibitor 2 (<i>TFPI2</i>), Cysteine-rich, angiogenic inducer 61 (<i>CYR61</i>), Acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 6 (<i>ACSL6</i>), and Phospholipase A2 group VII (<i>PLA2G7</i>).</p> <p>In conclusion, successful nuclear maturation of oocytes derived of prepubertal gilt abbatoire derived ovaries can be achieved without pFF or hormone supplementation. The expression of maternal determinant genes is not affected in a dose dependant manner, and removal of E2 or supplementation of pFF during maturation may alter the expression of <i>TRIM24</i> from the non-matured control; where no other maternal effect gene changes through maturation. Estradiol has a similar effect as pFF during <i>in vitro</i> maturation of porcine oocytes as seen by cleavage and blastocyst formation rates. And media does not affect the global gene expression of porcine oocytes, though there is a temporal control of gene expression through maturation.</p>

Contributions at the Interface Between Algebra and Graph Theory

Bibak, Khodakhast January 2012 (has links)
In this thesis, we make some contributions at the interface between algebra and graph theory. In Chapter 1, we give an overview of the topics and also the definitions and preliminaries. In Chapter 2, we estimate the number of possible types degree patterns of k-lacunary polynomials of degree t < p which split completely modulo p. The result is based on a rather unusual combination of two techniques: a bound on the number of zeros of lacunary polynomials and a bound on the so-called domination number of a graph. In Chapter 3, we deal with the determinant of bipartite graphs. The nullity of a graph G is the multiplicity of 0 in the spectrum of G. Nullity of a (molecular) graph (e.g., a bipartite graph corresponding to an alternant hydrocarbon) has important applications in quantum chemistry and Huckel molecular orbital (HMO) theory. A famous problem, posed by Collatz and Sinogowitz in 1957, asks to characterize all graphs with positive nullity. Clearly, examining the determinant of a graph is a way to attack this problem. In this Chapter, we show that the determinant of a bipartite graph with at least two perfect matchings and with all cycle lengths divisible by four, is zero. In Chapter 4, we first introduce an application of spectral graph theory in proving trigonometric identities. This is a very simple double counting argument that gives very short proofs for some of these identities (and perhaps the only existed proof in some cases!). In the rest of Chapter 4, using some properties of the well-known Chebyshev polynomials, we prove some theorems that allow us to evaluate the number of spanning trees in join of graphs, Cartesian product of graphs, and nearly regular graphs. In the last section of Chapter 4, we obtain the number of spanning trees in an (r,s)-semiregular graph and its line graph. Note that the same results, as in the last section, were proved by I. Sato using zeta functions. But our proofs are much shorter based on some well-known facts from spectral graph theory. Besides, we do not use zeta functions in our arguments. In Chapter 5, we present the conclusion and also some possible projects.

Topics in Random Knots and R-Matrices from Frobenius Algebras

Karadayi, Enver 27 October 2010 (has links)
In this dissertation, we study two areas of interest in knot theory: Random knots in the unit cube, and the Yang-Baxter solutions constructed from Frobenius algebras. The study of random knots can be thought of as a model of DNA strings situated in confinement. A random knot with n vertices is a polygonal loop formed by selecting n distinct points in the unit cube, for a positive integer n, and connecting these points by straight line segments successively, such that the last point selected is joined with the first one. We present a step by step description of our algorithm and Maple codes for generating random knots in the unit cube, with a given vertex number n. To detect non-trivial knots, we use a knot invariant called the determinant. We present an algorithm and its Maple code for computing the determinant for random knots. For each vertex number n, we generate large number of random knots and form data sets of values of the determinant. Then we analyze our data sets in various ways. For instance, for each vertex number n, we form data sets of the number of p-colorable random knots by finding the set of prime divisors of each determinant output. We define the stick number for p-colorability to be the minimum number of line segments required to form a p-colorable knot. We use our data sets to find upper bounds for stick numbers for p-colorability, for primes p _ 191. We also find distributions of p-colorable knots and small determinant values. The second topic on random knots is the linking number of random links. A random link is a collection of disjoint random knots produced simultaneously. We present descriptions of our algorithm and its Maple code for constructing random links of two components, and calculating their linking numbers in detail. By running the code for 1000 times, for the vertex number n less than or equal to 30, we obtain data sets of linking numbers for two-component random links such that each component is a random knot with n vertices. Then we find the distribution of linking numbers and calculate upper bounds for the stick number for the linking numbers ` _ 15. The second area we investigate is applications of Fobenius algebras to knot theory. Chain complexes and Yang-Baxter solutions (R-matrices) are constructed by the skein theoretic approach using Frobenius algebras, and deformed R-matrices are constructed by using 2-cocyles. We compute cohomology groups, Yang-Baxter solutions and their cocycle deformations for group algebras, polynomial algebras and complex numbers. We construct knot and link invariants using these R-matrices from Frobenius algebras via Turaev’s criteria. Then a series of skein relations of the invariant are introduced for oriented knot or link diagrams. We also present calculations of the Frobenius skein invariant for various knots and links.

Δοκίμια στην οικονομική της παχυσαρκίας

Δαβίλλας, Απόστολος 30 April 2014 (has links)
Recently economists pay a lot of attention on the analysis of obesity since the prevalence of obesity is widespread. This dissertation examines four research questions associated with the Economics of Obesity. Specifically, with respect to the first empirical chapter, obesity is modeled as a dynamic stochastic process and patterns of obesity experiences are investigated. Longitudinal data from US adults (NLSY79) and appropriate dynamic models were utilized. Strong persistence was detected in obesity and the body-mass-index (BMI), albeit with different properties. While controlling for initial conditions (early-life endowments and family background), the identified obesity persistence was decomposed into unobserved heterogeneity and genuine state dependence. Results from the sensitivity analysis show that obesity has a lasting effect, which however is not stable across the BMI distribution, exhibiting a steeper decline at BMI levels close to the clinical definition of obesity. Moreover, in the same chapter, we also explore the dynamic behavior of alternative fatness states (normal weight, overweight and obese) and the corresponding persistence, utilizing appropriated dynamic ordered models. Relevant policy implications are discussed. The second chapter investigates the dynamic patterns the duration of obesity and identifies the determinants of obesity-spell exits and re-entries. We utilize longitudinal data from the NLSY79, as before. Non-parametric techniques are applied to investigate the relationship between exit from obesity and spell duration. Multivariate discrete hazard models are also estimated, taking into account duration dependence and observed and time-invariant unobserved heterogeneity. In all cases, the probability of exiting obesity is inversely related to the duration of the obesity spell. Without controlling for unobserved heterogeneity, the probability of exit after one wave in obesity is 31.5 per cent; it is reduced to 3.8 per cent after seven or more waves. When time-invariant unobserved heterogeneity is taken into account, the estimated probabilities are slightly larger and broadly similar (36.8 and 10.3, respectively), which suggests that the identified negative duration dependence is not primarily due to composition effects. The obtained results indicate that public health interventions targeting the newly obese may be particularly effective at reducing incidence of long durations of obesity. In the third empirical chapter we investigate obese/non-obese wage differentials using data for white individuals from the 2000 wave of the NLSY79. Based on the results from the previous chapters, we assume that obesity is a rather permanent characteristic that associated with relatively small mobility. Hence, typical Oaxaca-Blinder wage decompositions could be applied in order to identify the proportion of the observed gender-specific wage differential between obese and non-obese. Based on numerous specifications and alternative sub-samples the results provide strong evidence for the existence of wage differentials in favor of non-obese individuals, which can be mostly explained by differences in early human capital investments and especially schooling investments. Finally, an attempt was made to identify the determinants of body-weight in Greece, utilizing individual-level data from the National Health Survey of 2009. BMI is treated as both, a cardinal and an ordinal measure of body-weight, while different estimation techniques are applied (OLS, ordered probit and unconditional quantile regressions). We employ a wide range of demographic, socio-economic, lifestyle, health-related and regional characteristics. The unconditional quantile regression estimates indicate that the impact of several correlates across the BMI distribution is distinctive. This differentiation concerns the effects of age, education, family income, physical activity, employment status, smoking, health-related impairments and regional characteristics. Thus, examining the entire BMI distribution and targeting specific segments of the Greek population can improve the efficiency of public health policies against obesity.

Lietuva globalios elektroninės bankininkystės kontekste: vystymasis ir perspektyvos / Lithuania in the context of global electronic banking: developments and prospects

Kulnickas, Saulius 16 July 2014 (has links)
Bakalauro baigiamajame darbe analizuojamos elektroninės bankininkystės paslaugos Lietuvoje, lyginant jas su Europos Sąjungos valstybėmis, JAV, PAR, Rusija, Kinija, Brazilija, Australija. Pirmoje darbo dalyje pateikiami teoriniai elektroninės bankininkystės aspektai: rūšys, priemonės, privalumai ir trūkumai. Antroje darbo dalyje atlikta Lietuvos ir pasirinktų pasaulio valstybių elektroninės bankininkystės paslaugų palyginamoji analizė. Remiantis negrynųjų pinigų atsiskaitymus, mokėjimo korteles, bankomatus apibūdinančiais rodikliais nustatyta, jog Lietuva gali pasigirti panašia elektroninės bankininkystės priemonių kiekio struktūra, tačiau pagal vertines atliekamų operacijų elektroninėje erdvėje išraiškas Lietuva atsiduria žemiausiose pozicijose analizuojamų valstybių kontekste. Koreliacinės-regresinės analizės metu nustatyta, jog negrynųjų pinigų atsiskaitymus Lietuvoje lemia vidutinis mėnesinis darbo užmokestis, bedarbių skaičius, mokėjimo kortelių skaičius šalyje, infliacija, grynųjų pinigų išėmimo operacijų bankomatuose vertė. Atlikus elektroninės bankininkystės perspektyvų vertinimą nustatyta, kad elektroninė bankininkystė Lietuvoje ir toliau plėsis: daugės elektroninės bankininkystės vartotojų, modernės vartotojų aptarnavimo ir apsaugos platformos elektroninėje erdvėje. / Bachelor final work examines e-banking services of the commercial banks operating in Lithuania and compared with EU countries, USA, South Africa, Russia, China, Brazil and Australia. The first part represent the theoretical aspects of electronic banking: sorts, devices, advantages and disadvantages. The second part of the work represent the carried out analysis of electronic banking service in Lithuania and other selected countries. Based on cashless payments, payment cards, ATMs describing indicators, Lithuania is very similar with other countries in e-banking devices using but in cashless payments operations values Lithuania is at the lowest positions in the context of the analysed countries. The correlation-regression analyse showed that there are five factors which determine the cashless payments in Lithuania: the average monthly average, the number of unemployed, the number of payment card in country, inflation, cash withdrawals from ATMs value. The qualitative analyse of prospects for e-banking showed that e-banking in Lithuania will grow: the number of e-banking consumers continues to grow, consumers’ service platforms will become more modern and safer.
