Ibn Arabi's Sufi and poetic experiences (through his collection of mystical poems Tarjuman al-Ashwaq).

<p>This study is a theoretical research concerning Ibn Arabi's Sufi experience and his philosophy of the &quot / unity of being&quot / (also his poetical talent). I therefore adopted the historical and analytical methodologies to analyse and reply on the questions and suggestions I have raised in this paper. Both of the methodologies reveal the actual status of the Sufism of Ibn Arabi who came with a challenging sufi doctrine. Also, in the theoretical methodology I attempt to define Sufism by giving a panoramic history of it. I have also researched Ibn Arabi's status amongst his contemporaries for example, Al-Hallaj and Ibn Al Farid, and how they influenced him as a Sufi thinker during this time.</p> <p><br /> In the analytical study I explore the poems &quot / Tarjuman al Ashwaq&quot / of Ibn Arabi, of which I have selected some poems to study analytically. Through this I discovered Ibn Arabi's Sufi inclinations and the criticisms of various literary scholars, theologians, philosophers and also sufi thinkers, both from the East and the West. In this analysis I have also focused on the artistic value of the poetry which he utilized to promote his own doctrine &quot / the unity of being.&quot / </p>

À la fin du Moyen Âge, les paroisses urbaines traversèrent une période de crise, qui se traduisit par une profonde déprise, temporelle et spirituelle, des cadres paroissiaux sur les fidèles. Cette recherche entend considérer un ensemble de paroisses urbaines dans les derniers siècles du Moyen Âge afin d’observer, « de l’intérieur », les conditions, les enjeux et les conséquences de l’évolution des interactions entre les paroisses et leurs communautés paroissiales. Venise, du fait de la richesse de ses archives paroissiales, a été retenue pour mener cette enquête. Dans un premier temps de l'étude, une vue d’ensemble des cadres paroissiaux vénitiens est proposée dans une confrontation constante avec le droit canonique médiéval : les territoires, les clergés et la liturgie sont ainsi examinés. Alors que le droit canonique juxtaposait ces trois cadres, la réalité paroissiale vénitienne en souligne au contraire les interactions. On en vient ensuite à envisager les évolutions à l'œuvre, qu’il s’agisse de l’affirmation du juspatronat laïc, de l’élaboration d’une nouvelle économie paroissiale et des transformations des pratiques dévotionnelles. Enfin, la thèse s’attache à mesurer les effets de ces mutations, qui se reflétaient dans la concurrence exercée par les autres établissements religieux, concurrence qui porta à une désagrégation des droits coutumiers paroissiaux. Aussi, l’ordinaire vénitien entreprit-il à la fin du XVe siècle de réformer les paroisses et d’en unifier les coutumes, donnant ainsi naissance à une institution paroissiale vénitienne qui se maintint jusqu’à la chute de la République. / In the late Middle Ages, urban parishes went through a period of crisis, which resulted in a profound abandonment by the parochial structures of whole sections of faithfuls'life, both temporal and spiritual. The aim of this research involves the study, through the analysis of their own archives, of a collection of urban parishes in the last centuries of the Middle Ages in order to observe, "from within" conditions, issues and consequences of changing interactions between parishes and their faithful communities. Because of its vast parish records, Venice has been chosen as the particular object of this investigation. The first part provides an initial overview of the Venetian parochial structures, comparing them to medieval canon law, therefore the territories, the clergy and the liturgy are discussed. In fact, while canon law juxtaposed these three frameworks, the reality of the Venetian parochial organisations instead emphasized the existing interactions between these three levels. The second part is therefore considering the various developments : like the assertion of secular juspatronat, the rise of a new parish economy or changes in devotional practices. Finally, a third part attempts to measure the effects of these mutations, which were reflected in the competition from other religious bodies. A competition that led to disintegration of customary parochial rights. So, to solve these difficulties, the Venetian episcopate began, in the late fifteenth century, to reform its parishes and to unify their specific customs, by thus giving birth to the Venetian parochial institution that will continue until the fall of the Republic.

This Cenacle is one of the smallest cells of the Marian Movement of Priests, established by the Italian priest Stefano Gobbi. Our main objective, in this paper, is to analyze which conceptions of family are present during the devotional practices of the mentioned Cenacle and how these conceptions get close to or far from the changes related to the new constructions and configurations of family that are currently present in our society. Throughout the text that composes the three chapters of this paper, we try to identify: the sociocultural changes nowadays related to family; the propositions linked to family, which are present during the devotional practices of the Cenacle analyzed by us; the social representations of family, expressed in it; and the answer to the question of whether this can contribute to the assimilation of and/or the resistance to the primary changes observed in our era. In order for us to accomplish these objectives, we adopted the methodologies of the bibliographical research and of the field research, the latter with a qualitative approach. During the collection of data, we administered questionnaires and used the technique of the focal group. Based on the respondents speeches, we concluded that the Our Lady s Cenacle of South Taguatinga s Mansions Sector, due to its characteristics, is an intermedium between the Popular Catholicism and the Official Catholicism, with its conceptions, rites and practices, with regard to family, following its traditional patterns, mainly through the usage of archetypes idealized by the Catholic Church for the family, which are: the Holy Family and Our Lady as an example of woman, wife and housekeeper. Even though it is placed within a context of changes in the contemporaneity, regarding family with its new characteristics and various possibilities of configuration as well as religion, which is going through important changes nowadays, especially in relation to the individualized belief and the fluidity of faith, the Cenacle under study remains immune to such changes. This leads it to, due to its reiteration of the traditional values, which are considered to be intangible by the Catholic Church, such as chastity, matrimony, indissolubility of the matrimony, conjugal faithfulness and maternity, contribute to the maintenance of the ideology of the traditional nuclear family, reassuring, thus, with the patriarchal system, responsible for the perpetration of the masculine domination and the feminine submission. / Esta tese tem como tema as concepções de família veiculadas no Cenáculo de Nossa Senhora do Setor de Mansões de Taguatinga Sul-DF. Esse Cenáculo é uma das menores células do Movimento Sacerdotal Mariano, fundado pelo padre Italiano Stefano Gobbi. Temos por objetivo principal, nesta tese, analisar quais as concepções de família se fazem presentes nas práticas devocionais daquele Cenáculo e como essas concepções se aproximam ou se distanciam das mudanças em relação às novas concepções e configurações de família que estão presentes em nossa sociedade, nos dias de hoje. Ao longo do texto que compõe os três capítulos desta tese, procuramos identificar as mudanças socioculturais relacionadas à família, na contemporaneidade; as proposições ligadas à família, presentes nas práticas devocionais do Cenáculo por nós analisado; as representações sociais sobre a família, nele expressadas e se isso pode contribuir para assimilação e/ou resistências às principais mudanças que se observam na era atual. Para concretizar esses objetivos, adotamos por metodologia a pesquisa bibliográfica e qualitativa de campo. Na coleta de dados, utilizamos como técnica o grupo focal e a aplicação de questionários. A partir das falas dos entrevistados, concluímos que o Cenáculo de Nossa Senhora do Setor de Mansões de Taguatinga Sul, pelas características que apresenta, se situa como um intermedium entre o Catolicismo Popular e o Catolicismo Oficial, com suas concepções, ritos e práticas, no que concerne à família, seguindo seus moldes tradicionais, sobretudo, a partir dos arquétipos idealizados pela Igreja Católica para a família, que são: a Família de Nazaré e Nossa Senhora, como modelo de mulher, esposa, mãe e dona de casa. Ainda que se situe em um contexto de mudanças na contemporaneidade, com relação à família, com suas novas características e várias possibilidades de arranjos e rearranjos, bem como à religião, que passa por mudanças importantes na atualidade, com destaques para o crer individualista e a fluidez das crenças, aquele Cenáculo permanece refratário a tais mudanças. Isso faz com que, por reiterar valores tradicionais, considerados intangíveis pela Igreja Católica, como: castidade, matrimônio, indissolubilidade matrimonial, fidelidade conjugal, maternidade, o Cenáculo poderá contribuir para a manutenção do ideário de família nuclear tradicional, colaborando desse modo com o sistema patriarcal, responsável pela perpetuação da dominação masculina e submissão feminina.

An examination of Khmer prayer inside the Ta Prohm complex and its implications for Angkor management policy

This thesis addresses the question of how the Cambodia Tourist Police prohibition of local custodians has impacted Khmer prayer rituals inside Ta Prohm Complex (Angkor Archaeological Park, Cambodia). For centuries, people of Khmer ethnicity have engaged in religious activities inside Ta Prohm. Local Khmers have functioned as custodians of spaces of religious activity there. Custodians decorate and clothe statues, and place incense, offering plates, and other religious paraphernalia in spaces of religious activity. Observations demonstrate that Khmer prayer rituals occur in spaces that contain religious paraphernalia. The prohibition reduced the number of spaces that contain religious paraphernalia in Ta Prohm. This thesis is the first research to closely examine contemporary religious activities at Angkor. The thesis discusses how the prohibition may impact future Khmer religious activities inside Ta Prohm, and presents a potential solution for the reduced functionality of Ta Prohm as a Khmer temple that resulted from the prohibition. / Department of Anthropology

A New Language: Apophatic Discourse in John Donne's "Devotions"

Not much ink has been spilled over John Donne’s relationship to negative, or apophatic, theology. A few scholars have written about apophatic discourse in Donne’s poetry and sermons, but, in general, the subject continues to be overlooked. This thesis seeks to (re)start the conversation by shedding light on Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions, a text which has yet to be linked to the negative tradition despite its clear engagement in apophatic discourse. Indeed, throughout Devotions, Donne wields several apophatic strategies when speaking of God including via negativa, predicates of action, linguistic regress, paradox, and a consistent reliance upon metaphorical language. Each of these strategies uphold the two guiding principles of negative theology: the epistemic thesis which asserts that God is incomprehensible, and the semantic thesis which asserts that God is unspeakable therefore can only stand as the subject term in negative propositions. Significantly, my objective is not merely to qualify Devotions as an example of apophatic discourse; I also intend to contemplate the implications of qualifying it as such, namely how Devotions challenges the long-held assumption that apophasis requires the user to relinquish the body. Across the text, Donne’s apophasis does not lead him to un-body; on the contrary, the body gains new importance as Donne imagines the risen body, the interpersonal body, the body that cannot be lost because it is an inextricable facet of selfhood. Again, my hope is that this thesis will (re)start or (re)energize the conversation around Donne’s relationship to negative theology, a relationship that is much richer and more extensive than current scholarship suggests.

The dissertation is a study of the origins, development and contemporary manifestations of Christian retreats. It traces origins from the Biblical record until current retreats. Christian retreat is a period of withdrawal from usual activities to experience encounter with God through Christian prayer. Jesus' pattern of engagement in ministry and withdrawal is a vital basis for retreat. Other Biblical descriptions of retreat are studied. There is an examination of retreat experiences in Church history with a particular focus on monasticism, as a major expression of retreat life, and Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the modern retreat movement. Varieties of subsequent retreat types in the spiritualities of different traditions from the Protestant Reformation onwards are considered. The spectrum of study includes Protestant, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Pentecostal spiritualities. The study culminates in focusing on current Ignatian and other retreats in their many forms.
