Processing bulk metallic glass from the molten state

McCracken, Ivan A. 25 April 2003 (has links)
This paper documents the investigation into injection molding, or die casting, a bulk metallic glass (BMG). A BMG is an amorphous metal of a thickness greater than 25 m, according to leading researchers in the field. This critical thickness differentiates a normal metallic glass from a "bulk" metallic glass. The impetus for studying the ability to process lies in the material properties of the BMG, which has twice the strength of steel and the ability to be formed much like a thermoplastic. An initial discussion of processing options and history precedes a detailed description of the machine concept and design, including the governing parameters placed on the design. An account of methods and materials used has been included, along with problems encountered and resultant remedies. The initial results consist of the verification of the machine concept and the ability to replicate nanometer-sized surface features from a mold. Design issues are addressed and the corresponding revisions described. The final machine revision shows an increase in process repeatability. A presentation of photographs, which show results of forming the BMG against both copper and stainless steel, is offered as a qualitative assessment of the processing capability. A discussion of considerations and paths forward has been included for future research using the machine that was developed, but these processing theories could also be carried over to other experiments. In the end, this study proves the ability to form extremely small surface features in cast BMG parts and makes suggestions on research avenues that may give a better understanding of the variables involved in processing BMG from the molten state. / Graduation date: 2003

The Research of Liszt's Transcription "Müller-Lieder von Franz Schubert"

Huang, Pin-hsuan 29 March 2011 (has links)
Liszt, the pianist well-known for his outstanding performing style, has led a trend of 19th century virtuoso style and created a phonomonon for piano world in the Romantic period. A great deal of his piano transcriptions have helped to promote many composers¡¦ works and also the development of modern piano manufacture to the new level. Those transcriptions have become the standard concert repertoire of modern virtuoso pianists. A large proportion of Liszt¡¦s piano transcriptions is Schubert Lieder transcriptions which were increasing brilliant style within the beauty and simplicity of Schubert¡¦s melody. The Müllerlieder is the last one of Schubert lieder transcriptions that Liszt composed in 1846. Through his superb compositional technique, this transcription conveys musical content of Schubert lieder successfully. Chapter one in this paper will introduce Liszt¡¦s compositional life of piano transcriptions, including the society background and different types of transcriptions. The connection between Liszt and Schubert lieder is also discussed in it. Chapter two includes the development of piano and the virtuoso style in the times of Liszt. The last chapter focuses on the research of Die Schöne Müller, comparing Schubert¡¦s original song edition and the transcription of Liszt and concentrates on analyzing Liszt¡¦s compositional technique in this piano transcription.

Development of information and collaboration platform for production service system in the mould and die industry

Li, Zhi, 李志 January 2013 (has links)
This research is concerned with the transformation Mould and Die (MD) manufacturing industry from the traditional manufacturing paradigm into service-oriented manufacturing (SOM) in collaboration with leading manufacturers in the sector. It investigates how the new concept of Production Service System (PnSS) can be used and extended to integrate distributed manufacturing-oriented services (MOSs) so that all participants could efficiently and effectively collaborate in response to market opportunities. In the PnSS model, MD manufacturers become more specialized in providing certain types of MD products and components while outsourcing other components or related services as MOSs from MOS providers (MOSPs). The main objective of this research is to develop an information and collaboration platform for PnSS (iPnSS) to utilize MOSs and support the implementation of PnSS strategy for MD industry. The proposed iPnSS is developed based on the SOA (Service-oriented Architecture) paradigm, which aims to encapsulate MOSs as Software as a Service so that MOSs can be advertised, searched, and utilized by stakeholders in PnSS. Several core MOSs have been developed as the core components of iPnSS to meet the urgent requirements of participants in new business model, including Ontology-based Dynamic Alliance Service (ODAS) for forming PnSS alliance, Real-time Order Progress Kanban Service (RT-OPKS) for collaborative project tracking and coordinating, and Hybrid Flow Shop Assembly Scheduling Service (HFS-ASS) for production planning and scheduling which is specified for MD production. The research makes several key contributions. First, this research investigates the characteristics and challenges of MD industry, and develops the PnSS business model to transform the traditional manufacturing into service-oriented manufacturing for MD industry. An information and collaboration platform called iPnSS is developed to provide related IT solutions for integrating distributed MOSs to facilitate the practical usage of PnSS. Second, Ontology-based Dynamic Alliance Service is developed to enable participants to form alliance and take advantage of SOM. This service provides a systematic and integrated supplier selection approach in PnSS, being responsible for the major stages in the life cycle of a service-enabled manufacturing process, including service provision and consumption as well as service evaluation and organization respectively. Third, Real-time Order Progress Kanban Service with the support of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is developed to support the efficient knowledge feedback for shop floor visibility and traceability. This service provides a set of mechanisms to monitor, evaluate and coordinate the manufacturing execution during the process of collaborative manufacturing after the formation of alliance. Finally, Hybrid Flow Shop Assembly Scheduling Service is developed to deal with scheduling problem for manufacturing one-of-a-kind products, which is based on real-life study with MD industrial collaborators. For each order in MD manufacturing is assembled after the required components have been produced, the service firstly considers the production simultaneity of components of the same product for final assembly. The service automatically generates scheduling results for PnSS user. / published_or_final_version / Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering / Doctoral / Doctor of Philosophy

Šerytė, Renata 06 June 2005 (has links)
ON A NOVEL METHOD OF INCORPORATING AN INTERNAL STRUCTURE INTO GREEN POWDER METALLURGY COMPACTS USING DIE COMPACTION

Beck, Geoffrey 02 August 2012 (has links)
A novel method of producing die compacted powder metallurgy components with fully en-closed internal structures was developed. The physical characteristics of the compacts were evaluated by measuring bulk density, internal density gradients and compressive green strength. Additionally, a finite element simulation was developed to evaluate the compaction process of the internal structure compact. The internal structure compact displayed the anticipated lower bulk densities due to the less dense internal structure than a conventional powder metallurgy compact, however; higher local densities were found within the internal structure compact at all compaction pressures. Compressive green strength characteristics showed unique results where the strength in-creased up to 300 MPa compaction pressure, however; at 400 MPa there was a distinct plat-eau in green strength. This phenomenon was attributed to an increase in differential shear stress around the internal structure with a minimal increase in density from 300 MPa to 400 MPa.

The formulation of process variables for the elimination of defects in a semi-solid high pressure die cast component.

Reinhardt, Carl Jurgen. January 2006 (has links)
Semi-Solid Metal (SSM) forming has distinct advantages: strength, near net shape, thick and thin sections and a large scope of materials able to be cast. The aim of this project is to produce a near net shape component using SSM casting with A356 primary Semi Solid Aluminum feed stock from SAG. The selected Short Arm Component was identified as a suitable component for SSM forming, it is used as part of an insulated securing mechanism in overhead pylons, demands high strength and has relatively thick sections. A combination of full and short shot castings from the component and modular die were produced, on the real time shot controlled 62.5 ton high pressure die casting machine, at varying casting parameters of die temperature between 140-250°C, gate velocities of between 1.01-2.87ms_1 and a billet temperature of between 578-582°C. To understand fluid flow and locate possible defects, X-ray radiography and naked eye surface observations of the castings were used to locate possible defects and irregularities, which were cross sectioned and analysed using a Scanning Electron Microscope with an Energy Dispersion Spectroscopy module. It was apparent from the current project, as well as from literature, that increases in the die cross-sectional area reduce the shear surface area and increase the viscosity causing undesirable mould filling behaviour. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2006.

Drama oder nicht Drama, das ist die Frage : Die Relevanz der Dramapädagogik als didaktischer Ansatz für den Fremdsprachenunterricht in schwedischen Schulen, Stufe 2

Thuresson, Janni January 2014 (has links)
Abstract Today there is a broad selection of teaching approaches in school when it comes to teaching a foreign language. In this essay a contribution will be made, through the analysis of one of these teaching approaches, the drama pedagogy, through a document analysis of the syllabus for foreign languages level 2 (this level takes place in Year 8-9 or 11). This analysis will review to what extent the drama pedagogy can be used as a teaching method to fulfil the claims in the syllabus for the foreign languages in Sweden. Research in foreign language acquisition as well as the drama pedagogy served as a theoretical basis. The result of this survey clearly shows that the drama pedagogy is a successful teaching method for teaching a foreign language. It contributes to fulfil many of the aims in the syllabus. Especially benefitted are the areas of aural comprehension, speaking (production and interaction) as well as the content of communication. Furthermore the learning of grammar could also benefit from the drama pedagogical method of teaching if it were combined with additional lessons, where the grammar is explained before using it. Moreover reading and writing would probably be acquired more efficiently through other methods. It could however be stated that the drama pedagogy contributes to fulfil the majority of the claims in the syllabus for the foreign languages 2.

The doctor as moral agent, with reference to the distinction between killing and "letting die"

Cooper, Denise Anne Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
In the bioethics literature, arguments about the nature of the distinction between killing and “letting die” seem irresolvable. There is a disparity between the dominant (consequentialist) opinion on this issue and that of the medical profession. No previous studies have investigated how doctors who work with the dying understand the distinction in the medical context. The aim of my research was to explore the moral reasoning of these clinicians in relation to this question. A focused ethnographic study involved thirty Melbourne doctors (thirteen palliative care physicians, nine oncologists, six intensivists, and two advocates of physician-assisted suicide) of whom eighteen were male and twelve female, with an age range from 31 to 77 years. Half had a religious belief (Jewish or Christian) and half were atheist/agnostic. (For complete abstract open document)
