Duchamp meets Turing : art, modernism, posthuman

In her book How We Became Posthuman (1999), Katherine Hayles analysed the process through which the conception of the liberal humanist subject led the way to the posthuman subject, a subject who lives in complete entwinement with the digital. This process, however, was not innocuous: it made the (fallacious) perception that information could do without material instantiation pervasive within many fields of knowledge, a process that Hayles contends originates in the Macy Conferences and the evolution of cybernetic theory. This research identifies an analogous process within the artistic realm: when Clement Greenberg delineated the concepts of opticality and colour field as the main characteristics that “defined” Modernist painting, he conceived of these in a purely disembodied subject (Krauss 1993). In this context, this work proposes to consider that the actual overcoming of modernism comes along with the advent of the posthuman, tracing its origin to Marcel Duchamp and his invention of the readymade, and not with postmodernism, the theoretical consistency of which, at least in the artistic field, this research will question. A first aim of this work will be to unify the main concepts and theories of the artistic field with those of cybernetics, to bring together ‘Turing land’ and ‘Duchamp land’ (Manovich 1996). For achieving this, digitalisation processes are not to be understood as representations of some material reality, but rather as ontological repetitions through which difference is conveyed. This is why the consideration of the temporal dimension of the archive as event is fundamental for understanding that the archive can only exist in its change, in its movement, in its action, in its metamorphosis, and thus the relevance of digitalisation processes in this regard becomes evident. Therefore, the archive is not only an issue of memory, but also a question yet to come, of conformation both of the future and subjectivities (Derrida 1967b, 1995). In this context, the present work advances the emergence of a digital subject with the emergence of new media, and theorises that the constitution of this subject happens by assuming a ‘point of view’ (Deleuze 1988) in the technological unconscious (Vaccari 1979). Reflecting upon the effects of digitalisation and actualisation (Deleuze 1968) on the subject, on how the digitised artwork and event affects, and changes, the subject observing and interacting with it, the present research will demonstrate that it is pertinent to talk about a subject who is embodied in the digital. In this sense, if the digitised artwork in the archive needs a subject to be actualised, this process also has its consequences for the subject. Therefore, the digital subject is the possibility of actualisation of the archive, and at the same time changes with it: she assumes an always-different ‘point of view’ constituted for her by the floating signifier in the technological unconscious. All these theories, which are part of the posthuman, are presented as the actual overcoming of modernism to show that the readymade as medium is, at the same time, both one of the points of rupture and the key link to bring back new media and art theory as art at large.

Adapting to new qualitative work tasks : A case study on Volvo Group on finding adaptation barriers and how the finance professionals comprehensively adapt to more qualitative work tasks.

Background: Businesses today are transforming its financial and operative processes in order to survive on the market. The human interaction of the standardised work tasks is being replaced by Robotics Process Automation (RPA) in order to make the finance processes less costly and more time efficient. Thus, human employees are delegated more qualitative work tasks and their behaviour as well as knowledge are in need to be changed. In this process, barriers may occur, and managers need to make their employees adapt in a comprehensive way to overcome these.  Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to find adaptation barriers that occur when the finance professionals are adapting to more qualitative work tasks, and how the managers will make their employees do so in a comprehensive way.  Method: In order to carry out relevant information for this thesis, an abductive single case study was used. The qualitative data was conducted through semi-structured interviews with finance professionals at Volvo Group to retrieve appropriate data and valid information.  Findings: What was found from this research is a lack of the helicopter view among finance professionals today, which becomes the main barrier when they adapt to more qualitative work tasks. There are several steps which can be acknowledged from the two models McKinsey 7S and ADKAR in order to make the employees attain the helicopter view. Summarising these steps, it is clear that the main purpose for a successful adaptation process is to keep the employees involved and updated.

Abstract The study began out of curiosity to research stakeholders perception about decommissioning visitors centers in Sweden. Decommissioning visitors centers is an ongoing trend caused by the change in visitor behaviour. A major cause to this change is the new information- and communication technologies such as more advanced digital platforms. Through an inductive research approach and a qualitative research method have we studied the phenomenon decommissioning of visitor centers. The empirical material is gathered through unstructured telephone interviews with relevant stakeholders. We concluded that stakeholders at both destinations have experienced a greater responsibility for the hospitality given. They also got the impression that visitors do not gain enough essential information upon arrival and gets baffled by this lack of information. In addition to this, the result of the study indicates a blurred line around who is responsible for the personal and the digital hospitality at the destinations. The confusion about who's in charge for handing out tourism information is present at both destinations.

Covid-19 and consumer behaviour : The impact of Covid19 on Swedish fashion consumers’ behaviour during and post-pandemic.

Intro: Understanding consumer behaviour and needs is imperative for B2C businesses, especially within the fashion retail-sector where trends and consumer preferences are constantly changing. The competitiveness of fashion firms is defined by their ability to deliver customer expectations. Covid-19 has limited the ability to shop in physical stores through restrictions and lockdowns, forcing consumers to alter their traditional shopping habits. Previous studies have observed changes in consumer behaviour and an increase in online shopping during the pandemic in several sectors worldwide. Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate how the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the buying behaviour among Swedish fashion consumers. Method: This research utilises a quantitative method with a deductive approach. Primary data was gathered through a survey targeting 290 fashion consumers in Sweden. The survey questions focused on changes in behaviour since the virus was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on January 30th, 2020, and whether respondents intended to continue this behaviour post-pandemic (WHO, 2021a). Responses were separated by age and income groups and the data was analysed in SPSS to conclude which effects Covid-19 had on buying behaviour and whether these changes were more prominent among certain age and income groups. Conclusion: Findings indicate that consumer behaviour had changed among Swedish fashion consumers and that some of these changes are likely to continue post-pandemic.

Summary: Although the digital revolution has transformed many niches of human activity, healthcare sector and pharmaceutical drug development has been relatively slow in embracing emerging technologies to optimize health efficacy, especially in Nordic Countries. The topic is of more importance now owing to the present scenario of the corona virus (COVID-19)outbreak, which has caused unparalleled disruption in the conduct of clinical trials and presented challenges as well as opportunities for clinical trialists and data analysts. In this master thesis, the potential opportunity with virtual or digital clinical trials as viable options to enhance drug development efficiency is highlighted that offers diverse patients easier and attractive ways to participate in clinical trials. Special reference is made to wearable devices in clinical trial execution and generating real world data; its acquisition and processing in a virtual trial setting. Issues of patient safety, measurement reliability and validity, and data privacy & integrity are  reviewed, and considerations are put forward for mitigation of underlying regulatory andoperational barriers. The aim of this thesis is to assess the recent wearable technologies that generate Real World Data and to understand the potential of this data to transform Nordic healthcare industry. A systematic review of clinical trials involving wearable patient monitoring technique in North America, Nordic Countries and other European countries was conducted. Out of various innovative wearable technologies, Smartwatches are found to be the most common and it is also observed that these wearable technologies have been able to help in early detection and diagnosis of diseases and modify disease progression by real time monitoring of data and develop precision medicine. thus, it is concluded that Wearable Remote Patient Monitoring is a novel technique that has few barriers;but promises a big transformation in Nordic Countries as well as in entire healthcare industry.

Factors that affect digital transformation in the telecommunication industry

Companies facing digital transformation experience this as exceptionally challenging. While there are several studies that state the importance of digital transformation and how it influences current and future businesses, there is little academic literature available on factors that affect the success or failure of digital transformation in companies. It is unclear what factors affect digital transformation in an established telecommunications company. The aim of this study was therefore to explore the factors that affect digital transformation in a telecommunications company in South Africa, and to what extent. One primary research question was posed, namely: “What factors affect digital transformation in a telecommunications company in South Africa?” To answer the question, a study was conducted at a telecommunications company in South Africa. The researcher adopted a subjective ontological and interpretivist epistemological stance, as the data collected from the participants’ perspective were interpreted to make claims about the truth, and because there are many ways of looking at the phenomena. An inductive approach was selected to enable the researcher to gain in-depth insight into the views and perspective of factors that influence digital transformation in the specific company. The explorative research strategy was used to gain an understanding of the underlying views, reasons, opinions, and thoughts of the 15 participants by means of semi-structured interviews. The participants were made aware that they do not have to answer any question if they are uncomfortable, and they could withdraw their answers at any time. The data collected were transcribed, summarised, and categorised to provide a clear understanding of the data. For this study, 36 findings were identified. From this research, it was inter alia concluded that successful digital transformation of companies depends on how Management drives digital transformation, and the benefits of new digital technologies should be carefully considered when planning to implement digital transformation.

Topic of work is an impact of digital self-tracking technologies such as wearable fitness trackers and smartphone self-tracking applications on individual. With using the methodology of semi- structured interviews, conducted with students who are engaged in self-tracking and comparative discourse analysis, when data received from interviews were compared with healthy lifestyle discourse, manifested in Czech internet media portals, research question of "How self-trackers perceive the impact of the technology of self-tracking on their physical activities and lifestyle, respectively differentiated among themselves in terms of impact and usage of self-tracking technology, and to what extent they perceive it similarly to the way self- tracking is presented in Czech internet media portals?" was answered in a following way: respondents were categorized as 'engaged' and 'sportsmen' users, and their relation to discourse was not complete, although they were using a proposed by media conceptualization of healthy lifestyle. In addition, paper proposes a theoretical overview over a problem of self- tracking and discusses the possibilities for future research.
