MaurÃcio de Sousa Pereira 13 March 2013 (has links)
The development of magnetic semiconductors has arisen growing attention due to their promising applications in spintronics. These materials can be produced by doping of a non-magnetic semiconductor with magnetic ions of transition metals. In this work, x-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy were used to study the structural characteristics of nanostructured Fe, Co or Mn-doped SnO2 oxide diluted magnetic semiconductors. The material was produced by a protein based sol-gel method called proteic sol-gel. To provide a basis for comparison, nanostructured standards of undoped SnO2 were produced with calcination temperatures of 300, 350 and 400◦ C. Samples of Sn1−x Mx O2−δ , where M is the magnetic dopant (Fe, Co or Mn) and x the dopant concentration, were prepared with the same calcination temperatures and x = 5, 10 and 20%. X-ray diffraction was used to identify the crystalline phases in the samples as well as to calculate structural parameters, particle sizes and residual microstrain. The analysis indicated that the synthesis resulted in nanosized compounds with the SnO2 structure. Samples calcined at 400◦ C presented the presence od spurious phases. Doping was confirmed by the variation of lattice parameters of compounds as a function of type and concentration of dopants. Vibrational modes of chemical bonds were identified by infrared spectroscopy. Based on this analysis, it was possible to study the energetic behavior of ionic bonds when doping elements are incorporated in Sn4+ sites in the host matrix.

Ação do ultrassom na remoção do biofilme dos reservatórios de equipos odontológicos da Faculdade de Odontologia de Bauru / Action of ultrasound on biofilm removal of the dental units reservoir of water from Bauru School of Dentistry

Lucas Justiniano Bermejo 20 April 2012 (has links)
A total of 25 waterline unit reservoirs of the odontological sets from the Dentistry/Endodontic Clinic of FOB/USP were assessed, in relation to the presence of microorganisms and the ultrasound action (US) on the biofilm removal. Waterline samples of 10ml were obtained from aliquots of 25l in natura and diluted until 10-4, then, they were spread using the dripping technique on the means: R2A Agar (R2A), Plate Count Agar (PCA), diluted Peptone (DP) and Sabouraud Dextrose Agar with cloranfenicol at 1% (SDA), being incubated at 24º C for 72 hours. The waterline units of the reservoirs were discarded and 500 ml of sterilized distilled water was added, submitted to ultrasound action (US) for 15 minutes, following the same procedure described afore. The bacteria colonies were quantified and the fungi were identified through micro-culture. The average of detection of UFC/ml before and after US was 173.787 and 15.841 for R2A, 104.873 and 3.034 for PCA and of 245.824 and 8.231 for PD. The fungi average was 52,4 before and 19,2 UFC/ml after the action of US. Fungi were detected in 20 reservoirs before and 12 after using US. Penicillium sp showed a prevalence of 36% in the waterline reservoirs assessed. The results obtained, led to the conclusion that US was efficient to break the structure of the biofilm, although it did not eliminate it completely, showing more effectiveness to break the bacteria structure.

Machado, Isaias Mortari January 2015 (has links)
In this work it is presented a study of the effect of fuel dilution with inerts on the radiative heat transfer characteristics of laminar non premixed methane flames. A study on the radiative flux distribution from turbulent flames is conducted in order to obtain weighting factors for the model of multiple point sources. The distribution of radiative heat flux is obtained by measuring the fluxes along the axis of the flame and the radiant fraction is calculated by the integration of such distribution. It is qualitatively shown that the addition of inert gas in the fuel leads to the inhibition of soot formation. It is quantitatively shown that the addition of inert may decrease or increase the radiant fraction depending on gas type, dilution levels and characteristic residence times of the flame. It is also reported values for the weighting factors used in the model of multiple point sources experimentally obtained from measurements. The shapes of the curves formed by the weighting factors are similar for the different dilution levels of carbon dioxide. The use of these weighting factors in the multi-point source model shows satisfactory results in comparison to the distribution of radiative fluxes measured along the flame axis.

\"Identificação de produtos de reação presentes em soluções resultantes de digestões ácidas de amostras agronômicas\" / Identification of reaction products in solutions produced by acid digestions in agronomic samples

Mario Henrique Gonzalez 01 March 2007 (has links)
Microwave-assisted with diluted acids is an alternative to sample preparation of organic samples owing inorganic elements solubilization for spectroscopic techniques determination. The efficiency of this procedure depends on the sample?s original characteristics. In this way, the decomposition efficiency was evaluated considering the sample?s original characteristics and the final products presents in the solution after decomposition. Grains of soybean and samples of forage, bovine blood, and bovine viscera were digested in cavity-microwave oven using oxidants mixtures in different acid concentrations. The decomposition efficiency was evaluated from residual organic carbon determination and mineral recovery by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The original sample characterization was performed from crude protein amount, fatty, and original carbon. In order to identify the main remaining organic compounds, the residual solutions were firstly characterized by spectroscopy technique (1H NMR), with the identification of typical nitro-, aliphatic- and aromatic- compounds. Studies concerning separation of nitrobenzoic acids isomers were performed by HPLC-UV, by using reversal phase chromatography with C18 as stationary phase and H2O:acetonitrile:methanol (75:20:5) + 0.05% TFA as mobile phase. The use of diluted acids proved to be useful and recommended alternative, reducing the reagents volume and consequently the variability of the residues provided by the decomposition process. Comparing the digested solutions with the original sample composition, biological matrix with structural amino acids, proteins and lipids produced nitrobenzoic acid isomers and other organic compounds provided from the cleavage in chemical bonds.

Bioaccumulation and Toxicokinetics of Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds and Metals in Giant Floater Mussels (Pyganodon grandis) Exposed to a Simulated Diluted Bitumen Spill

Séguin, Jonathan Y. 12 March 2021 (has links)
Canadian bitumen is mainly transported in a diluted form via pipeline and train, all posing a risk as they can lead to the release of diluted bitumen (dilbit) in the environment. In the summer of 2018, a collaborative large-scale field experiment was conducted at the International Institute for Sustainable Development - Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA), a world-renowned aquatic research facility. The research objectives of the Boreal lake Oil Release Experiment by Additions to Limnocorrals (BOREAL) project were to understand the fate, behaviour, and potential toxic effects of dilbit in a freshwater Boreal lake to inform evidence-based management strategies for the transport of dilbit. A range of controlled dilbit spills was performed in seven 10 m diameter limnocorrals (~100,000 L of water) resulting in environmentally realistic dilbit:water dilutions ranging from 1:69,200 to 1:504, representing the upper half of the distribution of oil spill sizes in North America in the last decade. Additionally, two limnocorrals not treated with dilbit were studied as controls. This thesis identifies the bioaccumulating compounds derived from naturally weathered dilbit in adult giant floater mussels (Pyganodon grandis), to determine the rates at which they were accumulated and excreted. More specifically, the bioaccumulation potential and toxicokinetic parameters of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) and various metals were assessed in mussels exposed ex situ for 41 days (25 days of exposure and 16 days of depuration) to water from the limnocorrals. These compounds have shown to be toxic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic to aquatic organisms. Mussels exposed to dilbit-contaminated water experienced significantly greater TPACs concentrations (0.40 – 0.90 µg L-1, n=12) compared to mussels from the Control (0.017 µg L-1, n=4). Furthermore, dilbit-contaminated water had a higher proportion of alkylated PACs compared to their parent counterpart, demonstrating petrogenic PAC profiles. We detected significantly greater TPACs concentrations in mussels exposed to dilbit-contaminated water (25.92 – 27.79 µg g-1, ww Lipid, n=9, at day 25 of the uptake phase) compared to mussels from the Control (average of 2.62 ± 1.95 µg g-1, ww Lipid; ±SD, n=17). Alkylated PACs represented 96.4 ± 1.8%, ±SD, n=12 of TPACs in mussels from dilbit-contaminated treatments at day 25 of the uptake phase, indicating the importance of conducting a more inclusive assessment of petrochemical mixtures as most studies only focus on parent PACs. From first-order one-compartment models derived from nonlinear curve fitting of the accumulation phase or sequential modelling method, uptake (0.66 – 24.65 L g-1 day-1, n=87) and depuration (0.012 – 0.37 day-1, n=87) kinetic rate constants, as well as bioconcentration factors (log values from 3.85 – 6.12 L kg-1, n=87) for the 29 PACs that bioaccumulated in mussels suggested that alkylated PACs have greater bioaccumulation potential compared to their parent PAC counterpart. Results from this study also demonstrated that giant floater mussels could be used to biomonitor PAC contamination following oil spills as PACs accumulated in mussel tissue and were still present following the 16 day depuration phase. The results of this study are the largest, most comprehensive set of toxicokinetic and bioaccumulation information of PACs (44 analytes) in freshwater mussels obtained to date. Metal contamination following the controlled dilbit spill was minimal, but mussels exposed to water contaminated with naturally weathered dilbit experienced elevated concentrations of dissolved zinc (30.26 – 38.26 µg L-1, n=12) compared to the mussels in the uncontaminated water (6.75 ± 3.31 µg L-1, n=4), surpassing the Canadian water quality guidelines for the protection of aquatic life. However, it is not clear if dilbit contamination caused elevated zinc concentrations in the water as other factors, such as limnocorral building materials and/or galvanized minnow traps used in the limnocorrals, could have contributed to zinc contamination. Nonetheless, giant floater mussels did not accumulate zinc in their tissues.

Human Urine : can it be applied as fertilizer in agricultural systems?

Filling, Julia January 2018 (has links)
In cities today, vast amounts of nutrients are being wasted. Improvement in nutrient management within agriculture can contribute to a more sustainable society. Reusing nutrients in agriculture could aid in creating a more circular system, where organic fertilizers can be used instead of chemical fertilizers. Urine is a liquid which has a high nutrient content. According to the Swedish environmental protection agency, human urine can replace mineral fertilizers, by using methods such as source separation, where urine is divided from faeces. This is a cheap, effective and sustainable fertilizer management system that can be easily achieved. In this study, urine fertilizers were compared with ecological and conventional fertilizers (NPK and cow manure). The study examined the effect of different urine fertilizers compared with organic and inorganic ones on plant growth, nutrient content, pH value and microbial growth. The plant growth experiment was carried out in the greenhouse facilities in Alnarp, Sweden. The results from the experiment show that cow manure has a better outcome when it comes to plant growth, but Aurin, one of the urine fertilizers, had the highest uptake of nitrate. Non-diluted urine had a stable result in all analyses. According to this study human urine is a fertilizer which can be used in crop cultivation systems, and can deliver good agricultural results.

Synthesis and characterization of aliphatic hyperbranched polyesters

Vuković, Jasna 22 November 2006 (has links)
Two series of aliphatic hyperbranched (HB) polyesters have been synthesized from 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid and di-trimethylolpropane using pseudo-one-step or one-step procedure. The structure and properties of these HB polyesters, investigated with different characterization techniques in solution, melt and solid state, were compared between each other, with commercial Boltorn HB polyesters and samples obtained by modification of the end -OH groups with ß-alanine or stearic acid. Seven HB polyesters were fractionated in order to obtain three fractions of each sample. The experimental results obtained from NMR spectroscopy, acid and hydroxyl number titration, GPC, vapour pressure osmometry, MALDI TOF and ESI mass spectrometry indicate that during the synthesis reactivity of terminal and linear -OH groups was not the same and that side reactions occurred in significant amount, which led to the lowering of the number average molar mass and broadening of the molar mass distribution. According to the results obtained from viscosimetry of diluted solutions and dynamic light scattering the best solvents for these HB polyesters are 0.7 mass % solution of LiCl in N,N-dimethylacetamide and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinon (NMP). The limiting viscosity number and the hydrodynamic radius of the samples increase up to the sixth pseudo generation in these two solvents. Investigated HB polyesters behave as Newtonian liquids in concentrated solutions (c < 50 mass % in NMP) at T < 55 °C. The same was observed for the samples from fourth till sixth pseudo generation in melt at T > 70 °C. At all other experimental conditions used in this work these polymers show shear-thinning behaviour due to the high ability for the aggregation. Thermal stability of investigated HB polyesters increases with increasing number of the pseudo generation. The influence of the procedure for the synthesis and type of end groups on the properties of these polymers is discussed.

Préparation et étude de Membranes Asymétriques Polyalcoxyétherimides (PEI) pour la séparation de composés organiques de l'eau / Preparation and evaluation of Asymmetric co-Polyetherimide Membranes (PEI) for the separation of organic compounds from water

Elgendi, Ayman Taha 11 October 2010 (has links)
The work aimed to prepare co-polyalkylether-imide (PEI) asymmetric membranes in order to get high flux water selective polymeric membranes suitable for the separation of organic molecules from aqueous mixtures by membrane processes. The separation of liquid mixtures (i.e. toluene – heptane, water – ethanol and low concentrated organic solute in aqueous solutions) was studied by pervaporation (PV) and by nanofiltration (NF) using homemade integrally skinned asymmetric PEI membranes. These membranes were prepared under controlled experimental conditions from DMF-H2O solutions of the corresponding polyamic acid (PAA) with respect to the ternary phase diagram; after the wet phase inversion in a water bath, the PAA membranes were imidized by thermal treatment. The membrane physical properties (IR, TGA) were characterized and the related morphologies, recorded by SEM, were used to optimize the asymmetric membrane preparation to improve the separation properties by tuning the thickness of the dense top layer. The performances of the pervaporation and nanofiltration separations were examined in the light of the influence of three sets of parameters, i.e. membrane elaboration parameters (dope composition, inversion bath temperature), experimental permeation conditions (temperature, applied pressure) and solute molecular properties (molecular weight, radius, polarity). The PV results showed that tight asymmetric PEI membranes could well be obtained, giving rise to a molecular selectivity in agreement with the solution-diffusion model. The NF results obtained with diluted organics in water (≈500ppm) have shown that the degree of rejection of the organic solutes was strongly linked to the PEI elaboration conditions and to the solute properties. The molecular cutoff values (MWCO) of the membranes were determined with a series of polyethyleneglycol (400 < Mw (g/mole) <6000) for an applied NF pressure up to 10 Bar; it was shown that the PEI membrane MWCO could be ranged between 400 and 1000g/mol at 30°C. It was also found with some PEI membranes that high permeation fluxes together with good separation selectivity could be obtained leading to interesting performances compared to literature data. Thus, it is expected that the development of these new asymmetric block copolyimide rubbery membranes might give rise to high performance membrane systems for applications in liquid-liquid separations, in particular in nanofiltration separations

Etude théorique de matériaux pour la spintronique

Virot, François 13 July 2012 (has links)
This thesis contains the scientific work of three years. The main topic can be defined as follows : study of electronic and magnetic properties of materials for spintronics. That technology of the future has still to find the necessary materials to realize new concepts. Our results are the following : We propose a new model to describe the magnetic configuration in thin ferromagnetic film with uniaxial anisotropy. It gives a better description of domain widths in function of film thickness and permits to obtain a good evaluation of the critical thickness where domains of Weiss type are no longer stable. The set of equations in reduced units is a useful tool to analyze experimental data. The ab-Initio study of diluted magnetic semiconductors has demonstrated the combined effect of strong correlations and Jahn-Teller distortion in (Ga,Mn)N and (Zn,Cr)S. The calculations confirm the experimental results of (Ga,Mn)N. We develop an analytical model that is complementary to the ab-Initio calculations and permits to create a link between several experimental parameters, the ab-Initio calculations and the former theory of Vallin. It has been used to interpret the optical measurements of (Zn,Cr)S. Our ab-Initio studies show that metacinnabar is a strong topological insulator with one peculiarity, it has a highly anisotropic Dirac cone. The passivation with hydrogen atoms influences the surface states of the topological insulator in the series HgX (X : S, Se, Te). When the dangling bonds are saturated by hydrogen, the trivial surface states disappear.
