Aspects of Dimensional Deconstruction and Neutrino Physics

Hällgren, Tomas January 2007 (has links)
The existence of at or curved extra spatial dimensions provides new insights into several of the problems which face the Standard Model of particle physics, including the gauge hierarchy problem, the smallness of neutrino masses, and the dark matter problem. However, higher-dimensional gauge theories are not renormalizable and can only be considered as low-energy effective theories, with limited applicability. Dimensional deconstruction provides a class of manifestly gauge invariant possible ultraviolet completions of higher-dimensional gauge theories, formulated within conventional quantum eld theory. In dimensional deconstruction, the fundamental theory is a four-dimensional quantum eld theory and extra spatial dimensions are generated dynamically at low energies. In this thesis, we study di erent applications of dimensional deconstruction in the contexts of neutrino masses, mixing and oscillations, Kaluza{Klein dark matter, and e ective eld theories for discretized higher-dimensional gravity. A different possibility to understand the smallness of neutrino masses is provided by the see-saw mechanism. This is a genuinely four-dimensional mechanism, where the light neutrino masses are induced by the addition of heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos or by other heavy degrees of freedom, such as scalar SU(2)L triplet elds. It has the attractive feature of simultaneously providing a mechanism for generating the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We study in this context a specific left-right symmetric see-saw model. / QC 20100716

New TeV Scale Models for the Gauge and Fermion Mass Hierarquies

Lima, Leonardo de 15 April 2013 (has links)
However, we have reasons to expect that it cannot be valid up to arbitrarily high energy scales. In the SM the Higgs boson mass is quadratically sensitive to radiative corrections and, hence, suffers from a severe fine-tunning problem. This creates the so-called gauge hierarchy problem, the natural solution of which requires new physics at the TeV scale. The SM also doesnt provide any explanation for the large hierarchy of fermion masses and mixing angles. The hierarchy problems can be naturally solved in theories with a warped extra dimension. However, their simplest version violates flavor at tree level, conflicting with experimental data. In this thesis we investigate four dimensional models that describe physics at the TeV scale obtained from a coarse discretization of five dimensional theories in AdS5 space, by the dimensional deconstruction procedure. The gauge as well as the fermion mass hierarchies are naturally generated in the same manner as in the extra-dimensional model, while also satisfying bonds from flavor physics and precision electroweak data. We also study a deconstructed model in which the Higgs is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson, with the motivation of obtaining a naturally light and localized Higgs.

It was based on the methodology of Content Analysis. From this picture, it was possible to point which aspect of the referred theory concerning the learning of Geometry is contemplated in examples of Prova Brasil applied to the elementary school and high school. The objectives sought were:indicating how this theory may theoretically subsidize the organization of the Geometry teaching; evidence, in examples of questions of the Prova Brazil, the occurrence of Duval's propositions relating to the ideas of Geometry; and point out, possible referrals to a teaching with the cognitive approach of the theory. The results of the analyzes allowed to infer that the cognitive specificities are contemplated in superficial andincomplete perspectives, and according to the level of teaching of the questions some views or apprehensions are not required. The category table may be extended for analyzes of other types of questions or resolutions, it allows a broader view of what is being valued or neglected in the teaching of Geometry.

Phenomenological studies of dimensional deconstruction

Hällgren, Tomas January 2005 (has links)

In this thesis, two applications of dimensional deconstruction are studied. The first application is a model for neutrino oscillations in the presence of a large decon- structed extra dimension. In the second application, Kaluza{Klein dark matter from a latticized universal extra dimension is studied. The goal of these projects have been twofold. First, to see whether it is possible to reproduce the relevant features of the higher-dimensional continuum theory, and second, to examine the effect of the latticization in experiments. In addition, an introduction to the the- ory of dimensional deconstruction as well as to the theory of continuous extra dimensions is given. Furthermore, the various higher-dimensional models, such as Arkani-Hamed{Dvali{Dimopolous (ADD) models and models with universal extra dimensions, that have been intensively studied in recent years, are discussed.

Duo d'artefacts numérique et matériel pour l'apprentissage de la géométrie au cycle 3 / Duo of digital and material artefacts dedicated to the learning of geometry at primary school

Voltolini, Anne 30 August 2017 (has links)
Our research project in didactics of mathematics is to study the use of digital technologies as a complementary environment to concrete manipulations. We define a duo of artefacts as the fruitful link between a digital artefact and a material one in such a way that this linking is an added value for the learning process. The instrumental approach of Rabardel allows us to establish the requirements for this link, each artefact enriching the other through the constructed instruments. A duo of artefacts sets off associated instrumental geneses. In order to base the conditions of the learning process, in the sense of Brousseau, a duo exists only when it is mobilized in a didactic situation. Our issue is to develop a duo of artifacts including the pair of compasses for the conceptualization of the triangle in the teaching of its geometric construction. The composition of the duo and its orchestration in a didactic situation are intended to bring out a new instrumental genesis of the compasses and, according to Duval's work, a 1D dimensional deconstruction of the triangle. Experiments in classes have enabled us to validate the hypothesis that the situation and the duo cause the development of a new pair of compasses instrument to rotate a segment. Balacheff's model of conceptions also allowed us to identify the evolution of pupils' conceptions of the triangle and the circle as the situation progressed, specifically the improvement of a 1D vision of the triangle as a closed broken line and a characterization of the circle as the trajectory of one end of a pivoted segment.

Teorias com grande hierarquia de escalas / Theories with Large Hierarchy of Scales

Sá, Nayara Fonseca de 26 August 2016 (has links)
this thesis we explore a class of N-site models that were developed to generate large-scale hierarchies. Using the dimensional deconstruction approach and appropriate matchings, these purely four-dimensional theories coincide with AdS5 models in the continuum limit, which corresponds to the limit with a large number of gauge groups. On the other hand, in the coarse lattice limit such theories have very distinct couplings of the excited states to zero mode fields compared with AdS5 constructions, resulting in a rich phenomenology to be explored at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The Standard Model (SM) hierarchy problem is solved if the Higgs field is infrared-localized as in Randall-Sundrum scenarios. The SM fermion mass hierarchy and mixings are obtained by different localizations of zero mode fermions in the theory space. This framework is employed to tackle the electroweak hierarchy problem from a new perspective. We show that an effective few site description of a warped extra dimension can implement the recently introduced relaxion models, which are a new alternative to explain the radiative stability of the SM scalar sector through the cosmological relaxation mechanism. These models require very large field excursions, which are difficult to generate in a consistent ultraviolet completion and to reconcile with the compact field space of the relaxion. We propose an N-site model that naturally generates the large decay constant needed to address these problems. In our model, the mass matrix of the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone Bosons (pNGBs), whose zero mode plays the role of the relaxion field, is identical to the one obtained for a pNGBWilson line in the deconstruction of AdS5.
