Styling identities in post-Soviet cinema : the use of slang, argot and obscenities in contemporary Russian films

Christie, Varvara Alexandrovna January 2013 (has links)
Traditional Soviet conceptualisation of slang, argot and obscenities as ‘substandard’ is argued to have strong ideological underpinnings. Despite such lexis gaining increased visibility in public speech starting from Perestroika times, sociolinguistic research into their use is still scarce and often tainted by the same judgemental approach. Rejecting the association of slang, argot and obscenities with speakers’ insufficient linguistic competency, this study shifts attention to their identity construction values. Drawing largely on constructionist sociolinguistics, this thesis examines the use of slang, argot and obscenities in the scripts of six post-Soviet Russian films released in the period 1993-2005. It investigates how indexical connections between language and society were exploited, negotiated and, at times, reinterpreted in the films. Lexical variation is conceived here as a stylistic resource, and its functions in cinematic discourse are analysed in terms of statics (engagement with stereotypes) and dynamics (identity work) of characterisation. With regards to the former, the focused and economic conditions of film production determine that stereotypes are often drawn on to provide quick identification, especially in construction of minor characters. Stereotypes of criminals, youth and uneducated male adults were analysed, revealing that cinema does not only exploit direct associations between lexical varieties and social groups, but also engages with such stereotypes agentively, bringing to viewers’ attention their arbitrary nature and rigidity of boundaries, established by social categories. Language variation can also represent dynamics of characters’ identity work, which was analysed on two levels – interpersonal and ideational. The analysis revealed a multitude of functions, which on the interpersonal level drew on associations with familiarity, power and catharsis, yet defying stable connections between lexical varieties and structural elements. On the ideational level slang, argot and obscenities were shown to render characters’ orientation towards social structure and discourses, prevalent in the contemporary Russian society. This thesis thus shows that slang, argot and obscenities are a versatile meaning-making resource, employed in cinematic discourse for a variety of purposes. Focusing on the way character identities are styled through the use of lexical variation enabled this project to account for both the local instances of identity construction and the macro-level attempts of the filmmakers to critically engage with the social structures, exploring, questioning and reinterpreting them.

Le français parlé au Cameroun : une analyse de quatre marqueurs discursifs (là, par exemple, ékyé et wèé) / The French language spoken in Cameroon : an analysis of four discourse markers (là, par exemple, ékyé et wèé)

Simeu, Simplice 18 March 2016 (has links)
This thesis sets out to describe and to analyse the discourse markers (DMs) là, par exemple, ékyé and wèé in Cameroon French, a regional variety of French that is spoken in Subsharan Africa. It is a pragmatic study of oral discourses that highlights how communication is based on speech inter-subjectivity such as DMs, which constitute linguistic traces. In order to study these uninvestigated pragmatic phenomena in Cameroon spoken French, three notions were of prime necessity, namely: discursive continuity, social implicity and interaction. These notions help to shed light on the informational structure and on the situational context of the DMs là, par exemple, ékyé and wèé in discourse organization as well as in its production or in its reception. The data of this study was got from two sources: on the one hand, radio programmes, and on the other hand, scripts collected from the internet. The study comprises two parts: Part one focuses on the theoretical concerns, alongside some illustrations of excerpts from the data. The second part provides a systematic analysis of the data (the functioning of the four DMs là, par exemple, ékyé and wèé in radio programmes and in internet scripts). This analysis enabled the confirmation that not only is it difficult to clearly define what a DM is but that there are also several competing terms and explanations, as theories regarding studies on DMs are heterogeneous. We propose an operational definition of DMs for the analysis of the data and suggest that studies on regional French spoken in Africa should take into account oral phenomena related to interaction.

It outstands for approaching the integration of technology in the teaching-learning process in the Mathematical major courses, and, in particular, for analyzing the teacher trainer‟s perceptions, such as the obstacles they face and the interference of the initial teacher formation in his teaching practice. For so, a qualitative methodology was applied in order to know the teacher trainers‟ perception about their teaching practice in the discipline of Mathematical Education applied to technology. For achieving the objective as well as answering the researching question, the data were collected by a documental research where some laws that rule the majors in Mathematics in Brazil are presented, as well as by interviewing six trainer teachers of some Brazilian states, recorded in audio and transcribed later. The analysis of interviews was carried outthrough the Discourse of Collective Subject (LEFEVRE &LEFEVRE), an instrument of analysis recently developed in Brazil. In general, teacher trainer advocates that during the initial mathematic initiating teacher there must be the highest contact with technological tools. Besides, they infer that there must be moments destined to theory and others for practical actions development in relation to technology classroom use. Another unraveled aspect is that teacher trainers rarely highlighted practices destined to forming a transforming intellectual based on technological context. Thus, we conclude that the organization of teacher formation practice is innovative and is aligned with what is proposed by the Technological Mathematical Education discussions and that theoretical studies is necessary, although in this discipline more emphasis is put upon practical activities. Nevertheless, not only the practice of the teacher trainer of the discipline, but also the discussions taken by technological lines of Mathematical Education is far from the aspects related to forming a transforming intellectual.
