India has ambitious targets to develop extensive renewable energy infrastructure by 2022. These targets are driven by the country’s pressing environmental and demographic concerns. While the development of such infrastructure can have many benefits, the costs of are often disproportionately borne by some of the most impoverished groups due to land acquisition and displacement. Land acquisition often occurs in rural areas, where the majority of the population are farmers or tribal groups. While there are laws to protect the rights of these groups, the effectiveness of these laws is often undermined by state governments that prioritize investment. Looking at the development of solar, wind, and small hydropower, the various impacts on rural communities are evident. Without adequate compensation for the loss of land and the suffering caused by displacement, these groups can often be left worse off than before. Government support needs to be carried out in a way that encourages maximum deployment, while also enforcing regulations that protect the rights of rural communities.

This study was conducted with a group Filipino survivors of Typhoon Yolanda. It examines the effects of being injured or displaced as a result of the natural disaster on the effectiveness of a pilot project addressing depression, anxiety and hope. Eight adults (N = 8) completed a series of five workshops along with a pre and post questionnaire. Those that were displaced, exhibited a reduction in depression (24%), a reduction in anxiety (12.8%), and an increase in hope (14.78%) after completing the workshops. Furthermore, the individuals that were injured experienced a reduction in anxiety (22.7%), an increase in depression (28.48%), and an increase in hope (14.86%).

Cation Exchange and Transport in Soil Columns Undergoing Miscible DisplacementLai, Sung-ho 01 May 1970 (has links)
A mathematical model was developed to predict the exchange of one cation by another in a soil column undergoing one dimensional cation solution displacement under steady state flow conditions. The model allowed prediction of both the solution and exchanger phase concentration of the cation in question.
The model consists of a material balance equation which is a parabolic type partial differential equation. The assumption was made that equilibrium was reached instantaneously between the cations in the solution phase and the exchanger phase. This assumption reduced the material balance equation to a form that allowed numerical solution providing the data concerning the cation exchange isotherm and the initial and boundary conditions are available.
FORTRAN programs were written for the numerical computation of the problem involved. The computation was done on a digital computer.
The model was verified by comparing the theoretically computed cation concentration profile with data from actual soil column experiments. The cation exchange of Mg→Ca was tested on Yolo fine sandy loam, Nibley clay loam and Haford Sandy loam columns. The exchange of Na→Ca was also tested on Yolo fine sandy loam. Satisfactory agreement between the column experiment values and the theoretically computed values was obtained.

Orientador: Eduardo Kokubun / Resumo: O deslocamento ativo traz muitos benefícios tanto individuais quanto ambientais, por exemplo, redução da mortalidade, redução da pressão arterial e redução da poluição. Apesar disso, vemos que no Brasil, utiliza-se pouco esse modo de transporte quando comparado a outros países. No caso de Recife, por exemplo, 16% de viagens de bicicleta, longe dos 48% de Amsterdam. O objetivo foi analisar o padrão do deslocamento ativo da Região Metropolitana de Campinas – SP e para tal feitio foram utilizados os dados da pesquisa “Origem-Destino 2003 e 2011 da Região Metropolitana de Campinas”. Foi realizado um estudo descritivo e analítico da frequência do deslocamento ativo, fatores associados para ser ciclista ou caminhante por meio da regressão de Poisson, e uma análise descritiva de tendência temporal sobre as características das viagens ativas da RMC. Para a realização dos mesmos, foi utilizado o software Stata 12.0 (StataCorp). A amostra contou com 36.892 pessoas residentes da RMC e 66.362 viagens. Sendo encontrado uma queda entre 2003 e 2011 nas frequências dos ciclistas (2,2% - 1,6%) e suas viagens (3,5% - 2,1%), e para os caminhantes (21,9% - 17,3%) e suas viagens (35,4% - 24%). Sobre as características individuais, para os ciclistas, obteve-se que a cada 1000 habitantes 25,1 são homens, 21,1 adultos jovens e 29,8 provenientes da classe E. Using Style of Participation among Texas Inshore Fishing Guides to Understand Displacement Behavior due to Perceived Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) Population DeclinesSmith, William 2012 May 1900 (has links)
Characterization of distinct angler fishing styles (e.g., how, where, and with what) allows resource managers the ability to predict how perceived impacts or modifications to fisheries resources (i.e., decline of fish species population) may impact different user groups. Recreation specialization provides a useful framework for understanding participation diversity among recreationists in terms of unique styles of participation. Bryan suggested that within an activity distinct types of participants exist that demonstrate characteristic styles of participation. Fundamental to Bryan's development of specialization were contextual attributes that characterize participant engagement in a recreation activity. However, advancement in specialization has been accompanied by a departure from Bryan's original conceptualization describing activity context. I revisited how specialization is operationalized and developed a contextual style of participation typology and self-classification measure to investigate displacement and substitution behavior among Texas inshore fishing guides.
Data were collected in two separate phases. In 2010, I conducted an exploratory investigation that included eighteen face-to-face, in-depth interviews with key informants spanning the entire coast. In 2011, I conducted a quantitative investigation that included mailing a 12 page self-administered survey to all Texas Parks and Wildlife licensed saltwater fishing guides (n=909). Thematic analysis drawing on grounded theory revealed that the salience of six contextual attributes (i.e., bait type, tackle type, fishing method, casting tactic, water depth, and fish species) that characterized four distinct styles of participation (e.g., Bait, All-purpose, Lure, and Sight-casting Guides). A unidimensional self-classification measure was developed based on my guide typology and discriminant analysis revealed it performed as well as a multidimensional measure of specialization. Ultimately, analysis of variance revealed significant differences existed among self-classification categories with respect to substitution behavior (e.g., targeting alternative species of fish, fishing in another location, and using alternative fishing methods or bait types) due to perceived spotted seatrout declines during 2010. In short, my findings suggest that anglers respond differently due to perceived spotted seatrout declines based on their preferred contextual style of participation. A contextual approach to understanding style of participation provides fisheries managers an effective method for understanding and mitigating social and ecological issues.

Geovisualization, Geometric Modelling and Displacement Analysis- Applications to Rockslide InvestigationsNordvik, Trond January 2010 (has links)
This thesis addresses different aspects of spatial data handling in connection with investigations of large rockslides. As such, most of the research was carried out in a cross disciplinary and highly applied context. The focus of the thesis is on spatial data handling methodology which directly or indirectly can be used to support in rockslide investigations. Rockslide investigation is a comprehensive term covering all aspects of the evaluation process; from the initial planning of field investigations to data analysis and communication of final results. Central topics addressed in this thesis are; a) How data reduction affect the geometrical accuracy of digital terrain models b) How interactive geometric modelling and geovisualization can be used in complex rockslide investigations and c) How statistical analyses can be used to evaluate displacement measurements of unstable rock slopes. Digital terrain modelling forms an important component of the methodology used for rockslide investigations. The first subtopic addressed in this thesis is related to the construction of Triangulated Irregular Networks (TINs) from Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) data. As the LIDAR technology tends to generate large data volumes, the resulting terrain models are generally too large to be efficiently handled by ordinary workstations. Therefore, comparisons of various data reduction (decimation) methods were conducted. Their performances were evaluated by means of deviations from terrain models constructed from full datasets. Evaluation criteria included deviations in volume, surface area and elevation. The results showed that the method using a vertical point selection threshold combined with a data dependent triangulation had the overall best performance when tested on 30 different test datasets. The main objective of the geovisualization part of this thesis was to determine the geometric shapes and locations of potential basal sliding surfaces, for the Åknes rockslide in western Norway, along with the volumes of unstable rock associated with different sliding scenarios. The Åknes rockslide is one of the world's most investigated rockslides due to its potentially catastrophic consequences. A custom written geovisualization application for the Åknes investigation provided the visual context needed for data interpretation and interactive geometric modelling of sliding surfaces. This geovisualization approach enabled geoscientists to develop different sliding scenarios. A scenario putting the basal sliding surface at a depth of 105m to 115m below the topographic surface, delineating an unstable rock volume of 43 million m3, was considered as the most realistic. Statistical approaches for analyzing displacement measurements were also addressed in this thesis. Several methods including regression analysis, spectral analysis and hypothesis testing were demonstrated to measurements obtained from Global Positioning System (GPS), total stations and extensometers at the Åknes rockslide. Displacement measurements obtained from lasers and crackmeters at the Nordnes rockslide in Northern Norway were also analysed. As with the Åknes rockslide, the Nordnes rockslide has the potential for devastating consequences in terms tsunami generation. Consequently, thorough statistical analyses of the available displacement data are crucial in order to obtain accurate estimates for the displacement rates as well as for gaining insight into the sliding processes. Displacement data from both sites clearly showed seasonal variations but the overall long term displacements were regarded constant. Prediction intervals were derived from the current monitoring data from the Nordnes site. These prediction intervals are considered useful for evaluation of future displacement measurements.

<p>Soil compaction is an inevitable result of agricultural practices. It alters physical properties of soil and tends to be undesirable as it adversely affects water and nutrient penetration. Furthermore, additional energy is spent to till the soil. Although a tremendous amount of research has been conducted in the area of soil compaction, the focus has been primarily on surface soil displacement.</p> <p>Realizing that the observed soil displacement is the cumulative effect from the compaction of subsurface layers, this research discusses the displacement and distributed pressure through the soil from a surface load. A given volume of soil of known density and moisture content was loaded at the surface with a slowly applied force using an Instron® testing machine. The distribution of the pressure and displacement profile from the surface to depth was measured to provide insight into the formation of the subsurface soil structures. The nonlinear exponential decay of the soil displacement (compaction) from the surface to a given depth converges to zero at the location of a hard, compact layer or a point where no soil movement occurs, regardless of the initial soil compaction. By increasing soil moisture content and decreasing soil bulk density, the vertical soil displacement increased at the surface and within the soil profile, and the pressure distribution decreased with depth. Changing the shape of loading surface had minimal effect on soil displacement.</p>

Fluid dispensing is a method by which fluid materials are delivered to the targeted boards in a controlled manner and has been extensively applied in various packaging processes in the electronics assembly industry. In these processes, the flow rate of the fluid dispensed and/or the fluid amount transferred onto a board are two important performance indexes. Due to the involvement of the compressibility and non-Newtonian behaviour of the fluid being dispensed, modeling the fluid dispensing process has proven to be a challenging task. This thesis presents a study on the modeling of the positive displacement dispensing process, in which the linear displacement of a piston is used to dispense fluid. Also, this thesis presents an evaluation of different designs of the fluid dispensing system based on the axiomatic design principles. <p>At first, the characterization of the flow behaviour of fluids used in the electronic packaging industry is addressed. Based on the previous experiments conducted in the authors lab, a 3-parameter Carreau model for the fluid Hysol FP4451 is derived for use in the present study. Then, taking into account fluid compressibility and flow behaviour, a model is developed to represent the dynamics of the flow rate of the fluid dispensed. The resulting model suggests that the dynamics of the flow rate in the positive displacement dispensing process is equivalent to that of a second order system. Based on the model developed, the influences of the fluid compressibility and the process parameters such as the dispensing time and needle temperature are investigated by simulations. <p>In the positive dispensing process, it is noticed that the fluid amount dispensed out of needle is different from the fluid amount finally transferred to the board, if the fluid amount dispensed is very small. This difference is considered one major problem affecting dispensing performance. In order to determine the fluid amount transferred to the board, a 3-step method is developed in the present study, based on existing theories of liquid bridges and Laplaces equation. Simulations are conducted based on the developed method to study the influence of surface tension and initial fluid amount on the final fluid amount transferred onto the board. <p>
Finally, this thesis presents a new approach to evaluate and compare different designs of the fluid dispensing system, namely air-pressure, rotary-crew, and positive- displacement. In this approach, the axiomatic design principles, i.e., the Independence Axiom and the Information Axiom, are employed. This approach can be used not only to evaluate existing dispensing systems, but also to design new dispensing systems.
