Análise dos programas da Capes de concessão de bolsas de estudos para a formação doutoral no exterior : estudos de egressos

Vargas, Vanessa Fernandes de Araújo January 2017 (has links)
The main objective of the present work was to analyze comparatively the alumni of the full doctorate and sandwich doctorate programs abroad in the areas of Agrarian Sciences, Biological Sciences, Health Sciences, Exact and Earth Sciences to identify the contribution of these international mobility programs to the National Postgraduate System in Brazil - SNPG. For this, data were collected from the alumni of 2006 of the full doctoral and sandwich doctorate programs abroad of Capes in comparison to the database of the professors of the SNPG. From this analysis it was possible to obtain the data of the entrance of the alumni of these programs in the SNPG, and the qualified scientific production of that group in the years of 2007 to 2014. To answer the research question about which of the two groups of alumni returned to the Brazilian National Postgraduate System and which has the most expressive rate of qualified scientific production, it was concluded that the sandwich doctoral program group has a higher entrance in the SNPG although the difference is very small when compared to the full doctorate group. Of these, the sandwich doctorate program has the highest number of qualified researchers that received the Research Productivity grant from CNPq. In relation to the scientific production, alumni of the sandwich doctorate program produce at a similar rate in relation to alumni of full doctorate, however, the evaluation of qualified scientific production, according to Qualis of Capes, states that the full doctoral program abroad have 69% of the publications in the A1, A2 and B1 stratum while the graduates of the sandwich doctorate program have 62% in these stratum. This analysis leads us to the conclusion that training abroad was extremely beneficial for the two groups of scholarship, however, when the focus is the qualified scientific production, which has the greatest impact, full training abroad indicates to be more efficient.

Faculty Preparation in American Higher Education: Academic Lineage as a Predictor of Career Success

Ellis, Martha M. (Martha McCracken) 12 1900 (has links)
The purposes of this research were to determine (1) the extent to which faculty are employed by the types of institutions from which they earned their doctorates in the United States, (2) the extent to which faculty have higher professional rank at employing institutions tat are the same type of institutions as those from which they earned their doctorates, (3) the extent to which female faculty are employed by the types of institutions from which they earned their doctorates, (4) the extent to which female faculty have higher professional rank at employing institutions that are the same type of institutions as those from which they received their doctorates, and (5) the extent of variability across academic disciplines in which faculty are employed by types of institutions from which they earned their doctorates. An exhaustive review of the literature on academic lineage was used to develop this research. All stratified random sample of 260 institutions from 2,873 colleges and universities was selected by Carnegie Foundation classification categories. Institutions were selected at random until the number of faculty members in each category corresponded to the estimated national distribution of faculty across Carnegie classification categories (n=3,940). The analyses revealed that the majority of faculty (74%) employed at all types of higher education institutions obtained their doctoral degrees fromresearch I institutions. Professional academic rank is an interaction between doctoral-granting institution and employing institution combined with gender. Male faculty are following the traditional "trickle down" theory of academic lineage while women faculty appear to be charting a different career path. Another unique finding was that there was not significant variability in the findings across academic disciplines. Academic success is a complex phenomenon that is not singularly explainable by academic lineage. As more women are entering into the academic ranks of higher education, changes in academic lineage are beginning to appear. The inflexibility and segmentation discussed in previous research is undergoing subtle but statistically noticeable modifications.

The experience of becoming a PHD.

Hadingham, Jennifer Ann 28 February 2012 (has links)
The development of the next generation of researchers is a priority if South Africa is to make a significant contribution to the international knowledge economy and establish itself as a force to be reckoned with in international research circles. In the context of this knowledge economy, researchers are increasingly being recognised as agents of economic growth. In order to be competitive, therefore, an extensive pool of active researchers needs to be cultivated. One way of doing this is to promote and develop doctoral capacity at the country’s universities. This entails, among other things, a move away from the traditional focus on what the supervisor does, to a more student-centred understanding of how the doctoral candidate experiences the process, and by implication, how this impacts on their research contribution. In this qualitative study, thirty doctoral candidates from the Faculties of Science and Humanities at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, were interviewed in order to establish firstly, how they had experienced their supervision at this level, and secondly, whether or not these experiences had influenced the successful completion of their doctorates. One of the principal findings of the research was that the role of the supervisor was not central to the achievement of their degree; rather, many of the doctoral candidates asserted a significant level of agency in both identifying and making contact with experts beyond their university-appointed supervisors in order to supplement their access to relevant knowledge. In the majority of cases, this was encouraged by the supervisors. Such enterprises represent a marked departure from the traditional models of supervision in the Science and Humanities faculties. In the case of the former, the customary co-supervision arrangement is increasingly being augmented by student-initiated collaboration with authorities located outside the formal boundaries of the institution. The traditional Humanities model of supervision is also transforming from a one-on-one relationship to a style characterised by multiple supervisors, each from separate but cognate disciplines. The research suggested that these emergent models are eclipsing their predecessors as doctoral candidates increasingly recognise the value of extending the breadth of their disciplinary exposure beyond the confines of the university.

Formação de doutores para a Saúde Coletiva: representações de orientadores / Academic training of doctors in Collective Health; representations of advisors

Sarubbi Junior, Vicente 19 May 2017 (has links)
Mostra-se relevante a realização de novos estudos para o avanço de estratégias de ensino-aprendizagem que deem suporte ao processo de orientação na pós-graduação / Post-graduate tuition is a space of fundamental importance for the introjection of academic values, styles and cultures, in which the doctoral student is undergoing a process of training as a teacher who will prepare future teaching staff and researchers. Specifically for the training of doctors, the post-graduate course assumes the commitment of preparing professional personnel who are both critical and capable of exercising - on a high level - the activities on their academic agenda consisting of teaching, research and extension work. The teacher, qua advisor, is the one responsible for the reception accorded to the student and the tuition both theoretical and practical offered him throughout the course. This present study seeks to analyze the advisors representations of their students on their experiences and attributions on the guidance given to doctoral students in post-graduate programs in the field of Collective Health. The frame of reference adopted was the Theory of Social Representations together with authors in Education and Health. The study covered eleven post-graduate programs classified as representing, respectively, mark five, six and seven (CAPES) in the field of Collective Health. Draws with replacement were held and forty-five teachers were interviewed with the use of a semi-structured script. The interviews were recorded and the whole content of the conversations was transcribed and submitted to thematic-categorical analysis with the support of the software programs NVIVO11 and IRAMUTEQ which generated a thematic table for the analysis of the categories and the trees of maximum similarity. On the basis of the analysis of content it was possible to identify 34 units of significance which formed nine theme categories distributed in three areas of discussion: experiences and attributions necessary to guide doctoral students in Collective Health, contributions of tuition for the training of doctors, and the commitment to prepare doctors for Collective Health. There were no significant differences or conflicts regarding the themes addressed under the guidance of the class five, six and seven (CAPES) programs. The advisors showed themselves to be sensitive to the important commitment to train doctors prepared to exercise the activities of teaching and research addressed to scientific advance in a multiparadigmatic and interdisciplinary field, they do not, however, explain with clarity what the pedagogical strategies are which they would use to construct a common path, based on mutual experience, as to the processes which this preparation involves. The representations are little valued as a culture of academic training, it falling to the individual advisor to give importance or not to it. There is no sharing, as a process of discussion and learning among the advisors, about situations whether of conflict or success in the tuition process with a view to encouraging favorable pedagogical attitudes and which would assist in the tuition process. The undertaking of further studies would be useful for the development of teaching-learning strategies which would give support to the process of tuition in post-graduate courses

Sustaining and rapid response engineering in the reservoir sampling and pressure group of the commercial products and support organization at Schlumberger Sugar Land Technology Center

Kerr, Bradley Gray 25 April 2007 (has links)
This record of study investigates twelve months of engineering industry experience, a required internship of the Doctor of Engineering degree program at Texas A&M University. The internship company was Schlumberger Limited. The record of study begins with a brief introduction to the company. Three projects undertaken by the intern during the internship are discussed. The projects show how a wide variety of knowledge, both technical and practical, is required to solve engineering problems. Issues facing newly graduated engineers in industry are discussed. Issues facing newly graduated engineers exposed to industry for the first time are quite different than a traditional engineering curriculum has prepared them to encounter. Industry today is demanding a well-educated engineer capable of tackling technical problems in several areas as well as engineers with the ability to easily communicate and interact with others and develop leadership potential. Academia, industry, and society all have a highly influential role in developing engineers. The engineer must consider the interaction of technology and society when searching for a solution to optimize the benefit to all. The study further investigates academic challenges as well as the declining number of engineers, international competition, industry responsibility, and observations made during the internship period. Research has shown that in the next few year as the Baby Boomer generation of approximately 77 million people begin to retire, the next generation of approximately 44 million will have difficulty keeping up with technical and scientific demands. Industry demand for science and engineering graduates is beginning to overwhelm academia’s ability to respond and produce. Few U.S. undergraduates are continuing education in graduate schools. This leaves a large student population base to be filled by international students. U.S. citizens accounted for only 35-percent of the total number of doctoral degree recipients in science and engineering during the 2005 academic year. Observations made during the internship period will be used to make recommendations to both industry and academia to help align industry demands and academic abilities in order to produce engineering graduates that are ready to accept the vastly different challenges encountered in industry.

Dissertation Influences and Processes: Ed.D. vs. A.B.D.

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT This study identified the influences and processes of the dissertation completers, currently enrolled students, and non-completers of four cohorts (59 participants) in the Ed.D. administration program. The research questions sought answers as to why some students completed their dissertations and why some did not, the processes in completing a dissertation, and what should be included in a doctoral guide for completing the dissertation. The participants of this study were Ed.D. administration doctoral students in the field of educational leadership from a southwestern university. The job titles of the participants ranged from teacher to superintendent. The participants started the three-year doctoral program in the years 2004, 2005, 2006, or 2007. They were between the ages of 24 and 63. Survey Monkey provided the opportunity to request answers to different questions depending on the dissertation status—enrollee, completer, or non-completer. This study entailed interviewing seven doctoral completers, five enrollees, and four non completers. The significance of this mixed method study was to compare influences and processes to determine suggestions for a study guide that could be used by future doctoral students, chairs, programs, and universities to help students complete their dissertations and become successful graduates. Recommendations are made (a) to recruit more African Americans and men into doctoral programs and the education field; (b) non-completers be invited to finish their dissertations with interventions and an accountable chair; (c) chairs provide his or her best help to meet the student half-way; (d) the department and university provide accountability measures and incentives for both the student and the chair; and (e) provide specific lessons that include finding a topic, researching a topic, and interacting with the chair; and (f) it was determined that non-completers were not timid as suggested in the literature but were found to have either changed their desire or fulfilled their desire by obtaining a promotion. In summary, a nurturing chair and a strong support system were found to be two major factors in determining the difference between doctoral completion and non-completion. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Educational Administration and Supervision 2015

Applying Scaffolding Methodology to Structure DNP Intensive Skills Education

Short, Candice, Hemphill, Jean, Pope, Victoria 14 April 2022 (has links)
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) curriculum was developed to incorporate learning outcomes and experiential opportunities for students to attain the core FNP knowledge for doctoral education. Historically, challenges related to developing clinical skills in blended/online programs has been problematic. The appeal of online FNP education has challenged educators to develop new ways to provide students opportunities to experience hands-on clinical skills within the subspecialties of the DNP, FNP role. With limited clinical sites, and now with more clinical access constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is imperative that new models of instruction provide students opportunities for skills training. The purpose of this project is to describe use of scaffolding methodology to design student skills learning activities using synchronous online and on-ground sessions during DNP intensives. Student and faculty input identified the types of practice skills and procedures needing improvement, such as suturing, electrocardiogram, etc. An intensive task force was organized to evaluate curricular elements; content was then mapped to analyze gaps. The first step included aligning advanced practice nursing skills sessions in each intensive with the related clinical courses offered within that semester. Then, students were organized into a skills rotation plan based on their date of admission and place within their program of study. Modifications required by COVID-19 on-ground restrictions necessitated re-thinking intensive skills sessions. Student satisfaction scores significantly improved after the intensive sessions were restructured. Faculty continue to seek feedback from the students to provide beneficial practice opportunities during the DNP intensives.
