"Tell Me, Where am I From?": A Study of the Performance of Geek Identity at Comic Book Conventions

The performance of identity is an often studied subject matter. One identity, Geek, and the larger subculture to which it is attached (Geek culture) has become a growing field of study in since the turn of the millennium, mirroring the growth of the subculture itself. The question then is how do Geek's perform this identity and create an idea of what a Geek is? If there is a place to examine this performance then it is the growing event of comic book conventions. At these events thousands of individuals gather to celebrate, interact with, purchase and play with the commodities of Geek; comic books, video games, anime, manga and film. In this space, as I will discuss, the spectrum of performance as outline by Richard Schechner in Performance Theory occurs in simultaneous forms inside the convention. While there is ritual, there is also play, and theater, and all three may be occurring at any one time through any one individual. This is partially brought on by the presence of cosplayers, convention attendees who dress up as fictional characters, and perform a separate role that also speaks to their own identity. Furthermore, the presence of what Victor Turner terms social dramas in the space of the panel discussion complicate and re-form not only individual identities, but also Geek culture identity as well. Underlying the interaction of identity with space/place is the, as Marc Agé terms it, non-place nature of the convention center itself. That the convention center does not bear the trappings of a typical anthropological place (such as history or tradition) influences the impact of the performance and the identity created therein. Consequently, the identity held will be challenged by the temporary nature, not just of the event, but also the place which contains it. I attended two comic book conventions in the state of Florida to examine this phenomena using my own experience as part of the study, as well as interviewing other convention attendees and people within my group. I will move through the space of the conventions exploring my personal relation to the identity of Geek and how others perform the identity while trying to explore what does it mean to be Geek?

What common traits do these women possess and in what respects do they differ? What is Pinero's idea of women's role in society, and what is his idea of women in general? Situating Taiwanese identities : social transformations, young people and television drama

This thesis examines the recent production and consumption of television dramas in Taiwan in the context of Taiwan's complicated modem history, rapid social transitions, budding self-assertiveness and changing relationships with regional and global players. The detailed analysis in this subject matter contributes to wider debates in the media globalisation theory, reaffirming the continuing development of an East Asian cultural trading block and pointing to a formation of the distinctive regional popular culture that is more effective in shaping up the local production and consumption activities. The rising regional dynamism in Taiwan's television drama production and consumption since the late 1990s has been encapsulated in this thesis in three main points: 1. The findings from detailed content analysis on programming schedules of seven locally-run channels has shown that regional programming is more integrated with local business while global programming (mostly American) has shifted to be produced and distributed single-handedly by the transnational media corporations. 2. The first-hand audience interviews revealed a subtle difference in young people's viewing experiences of the global and the regional programming. Situated in a broader social context, their experience of the former has primarily crouched on a fantasy of liberal individualism while the latter provided a desirable template for emulation in everyday life. 3. The thesis also discussed the emergence of a new drama genre on Taiwanese television-Idol drama, which can be seen as the reactions to the widespread regional television deregulation, commercialisation and growing intra-regional cultural trade. Its late development has also epitomised An inevitable negotiation of local characteristic with regional forces.

Συμβολή στην οικολογία των πόλεων της Ελλάδας: χωρολιγική, βιολογική και οικολογική ανάλυση της ξυλώδους χλωρίδας της Δράμας

Η ξυλώδης χλωρίδα της πόλης της Δράμας, που αποτελείται από 148 taxa Σπερματοφύτων, αναλύεται από βιολογική, χωρολογική και οικολογική άποψη. Γίνονται, επίσης, προτάσεις για τη βελτίωση του πρασίνου της πόλης. Από τα πιο πάνω taxa, 63 (42,6%) είναι ιθαγενή, 77 (52%) ξενικά και 8 (5,4%) υβρίδια. Στο βλαστητικό φάσμα της ξυλώδους χλωρίδας υπερτερούν τα θαμνώδη (54%) και ακολουθούν τα δενδρώδη φανερόφυτα με ποσοστό 25,7%. Διακρίθηκαν 21 χωρολογικές ομάδες, στις οποίες κυριαρχούν τα ασιατικά με ποσοστό 22,2% και τα αμερικανικά και μεσογειακά στοιχεία με ποσοστό 17,9% αντίστοιχα. Από οικολογική άποψη η ξυλώδης χλωρίδας της Δράμας μελετάται σε σχέση με τους πιο σημαντικούς παράγοντες: φως, θερμοκρασία, υγρασία, επίδραση αλατιού και αντίδραση εδάφους. Οι κλιματικοί και εδαφικοί παράγοντες επιτρέπουν την εγκατάσταση κυρίως φωτόφιλων, θερμόφιλων, μετρίως υγρόφιλων, αλόφοβων και βασεόφιλων ειδών. Η περίοδος ανθοφορίας των ξενικών ειδών είναι μεγαλύτερη απ’ αυτή των ιθαγενών. Από τα καρποφορούντα ξυλώδη είδη ένα σημαντικό ποσοστό taxa φέρει καρπούς εδώδιμους, που αποτελούν πολύ σημαντική πηγή τροφής για την ορνιθοπανίδα της περιοχής. History is a major point of inquiry and exploration in all Byron's major, and many of his minor, works. Byron understands and conceptualizes history and its tight and troubled relationship with literature, drawing attention to the literariness of history and the historicity of literature in his wake. The aspiration to the 'truth' of history is, for Byron, a highly creative process, highlighting the cross-pollination of fact and fiction, and also exploring history's inherent theatricality. Historical writing shapes but, crucially, also distorts our understanding of history. The dramatic works of Lord Byron are, on the whole, traditionally the least critically explored territory of his oeuvre. Byron's singular understanding and conceptualization of history in his dramas is the focus of this study, comprising the seven dramatic works he wrote between 1820 and 1822. As this thesis shows, these dramas make up a dynamic dramatic project, creating a space of formal, discursive and thematic experimentation, which reveals not only Byron's intense involvement in matters of drama but also, in a wider perspective, his understanding and treatment of history. Innehållet i fokus med Storytelling Dramas : En aktionsforskningsstudie kring ett intresseväckande berättelseskrivande

Abstract The study aims to develop knowledge through Storytelling Dramas where teachers and students learn together. The ambition is to investigate if drama variation in teaching, can increase more students' motivation to learn and develop their writing skills concerning more content rich and imaginative lyrics. Theorists believe that learning occurs through interaction; that learning concerns relationships and that language and communication are fundamental elements. Interaction, motivation, curiosity and interest is needed for learning. With an action research approach through we have investigated how the content of the students' stories come to expression for dramatization in conversation and writing. The empirical material consists of log books, students 'written stories, group discussions, and focus group interviews. After that a qualitative analysis was made.The results are presented in two parts. Part 1: The dramatization of different perspectives and Part 2: Students' perspectives on writing qualities. During the analysis, we also discovered that our approach covers the entire Illeris educational triangle. We saw how Storytelling Dramas highlighted narratives content from different perspectives and to students' focus was on different qualitative levels. The conclusion is that Storytelling Dramas is a teaching method based on co-operative learning that provide different perspectives of learning objects, which helps broaden the teachers' and pupils' learning as to make visible the content of students' stories.  Keywords: action research, co-operative learning, , learning styles, writing skills and Storytelling Dramas. / Abstrakt: Studiens syfte är att utveckla kunskap genom Storytelling Dramas där pedagoger och elever lär tillsammans. Vår ambition med studien är att undersöka om vi genom drama som variation i undervisningen kan öka fler elevers motivation att lära och därmed utveckla deras skrivförmåga vad gäller att skriva mer innehållsrika och fantasifulla texter. Teoretiker menar att lärande sker genom samspel; att lärande har med relationer att göra och att språk och kommunikation är grundläggande element. Förutsättning för lärande är samspel, motivation, nyfikenhet och intresse.. Med aktionsforskning som ansats lät vi elevernas skrivna berättelser synliggöras genom dramatisering för att eleverna skulle få syn på det som ger kvalité i berättelseskrivningen och därmed ett bra innehåll. Efter våra aktioner gjordes en kvalitativ analys. Analysen av loggböcker, gruppsamtal samt elevernas skrivna berättelser, där vi undersökte hur innehållet i elevernas berättelser kom till utryck efter dramatisering i samtal och skrift, mynnade ut i två delar. Del 1: Dramatiseringens olika perspektiv och del 2: Elevernas perspektiv på skrivandets kvalitéer. Under analysarbetet upptäckte vi även att vårt arbetssätt täcker hela Illeris lärotriangel.  Vi såg hur Storytelling Dramas belyste berättelsers innehåll ur olika perspektiv och att elevernas fokus befann sig på olika kvalitativa nivåer. Den övergripande slutsatsen med vår studie är att Storytelling Dramas är en undervisningsmetod som bygger på samlärande som ger olika perspektiv av lärandets objekt, vilket bidrar till att bredda pedagogers och elevers lärande såsom att synliggöra innehållet i elevers berättelser. The fundamental question that guides the study says that these concepts are fundamental and recurring, not only for the explanatory model of the sociology of Roberto DaMatta, but also for the Brazilian social thought, forming with other concepts (paternalism, personalism, tradition and modernity) a basic system for the interpretation of Brazilian society. In this sense, we seek to outline the meanings of concepts in the relational sociology of Roberto DaMatta as key categories in the process of explanation and understanding of Brazilian society, analyzing the logic and semantics of the concepts and the difference with other sociological interpretations. In this process of reflection was necessary to analyze critical about the work of DaMatta, especially those made by Jessé Souza. / A partir de pesquisa bibliográfica, pretendemos construir reflexão teórica sobre os significados e importância dos conceitos de indivíduo e pessoa no arcabouço da sociologia relacional de Roberto DaMatta. A questão de fundo que norteia o estudo diz que os conceitos em análise são cruciais e recorrentes, não só para o modelo explicativo damatiano, mas para o pensamento sociológico brasileiro como um todo, formando com outros conceitos (patrimonialismo, personalismo, tradição e modernidade) um sistema basilar para a interpretação do Brasil. Neste sentido, pretende-se delinear os significados e as articulações que os conceitos assumem na sociologia relacional de Roberto DaMatta como categorias fundamentais no processo de explicação e compreensão da sociedade brasileira, procurando colocar em evidência o parentesco lógico e semântico, além dos afastamentos, com outras interpretações do pensamento social geral e brasileiro. Neste processo de reflexão, faz-se necessário apontar algumas fragilidades do esquema damatiano, expostas por seus críticos, dentre eles, Jessé Souza.
