Passage

Dermendji, Olga 20 July 2011
"Passage" presents a negotiation between the natural and the human-made realms and comments on the duality of perceptions and emotional responses associated with each. On the one hand, I aim to create a calm, quiet and peaceful environment offering a pleasant and meditative experience.  On the other hand, I offer the challenge of contemplation in a city-like space that evokes dense urban architecture in the process of decay. Both experiences draw on my personal histories of fact and fiction, reality and dream, hopefully resulting in evocative parallel experiences for those who encounter my exhibition space.

Evaluation and development of an organized home maintenance system

Becher, Susan 03 June 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate what forms of maintenance programs for the home are currently available on the market, and to develop a structured, organized framework for an easy-to-use system. From an inventory of what was available at national bookstore chains and from public libraries, it was evident that there was a void in information about scheduled maintenance accessible to the public. Therefore this paper addressed this issue. This thesis first investigated the history of upkeep and maintenance and its published materials and then assessed how best to fill the void in the area of continuous home care. This area was of interest because haphazard and random describe an owner's usual approach to maintenance around the home. Quality maintenance should not be hasty nor superficial. Rather, it should be an in-depth, consciously organized effort of preserving the building fabric. Treating a repair as a quick fix-it job is comparative to applying a band-aid to a cut which requires further medical treatment. This type of care is inadequate because it has not solved the problem which still exists. Therefore, maintenance should have the characteristic of being a conscious, in-depth effort. Quality maintenance should also be an organized effort, thereby avoiding the possibility of being hit-or-miss or lackadaisical.Simply, maintenance is the process of upkeep, of cleaning and monitoring the interior and exterior of a structure. Detecting an arising problem within the fabric, swiftly dealing with it, solving the situation and avoiding further deterioration is preventive maintenance. In other words upkeep is two-fold: 1) inspecting and repairing damage from general wear and tear (maintenance) and 2) preparing the house and its support systems for future use (preventive measures). Whether new construction or an older home, any aged structure can benefit from simple scheduled maintenance. In terms of conservation technology, a preventive maintenance program can significantly contribute to the preservation of historic and nonhistoric structures. Maintenance is a direct intervention process; it involves a one-on-one relationship and an ongoing interaction between owner and building. The goal in implementing a maintenance program is preservation: the sustaining and prolonging of the life and integrety of a special building--the home.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

Visbys färger : exteriör färgsättning av bostadshus i Visby innerstad 1860–1930 / The colours of Visby : exterior colour schemes of dwellings in the historic centre of Visby 1860–1930

Laserna, Max January 2013 (has links)
The main aim of this research is to survey the general colour scheme for private dwellings inVisby, built 1860–1930. During this period the visual appearance of the town of Visby changedsubstantially, since the increased local production of lime led to the plastering of many woodenbuildings. Which colour schemes were chosen for the different building types of the historic centreof Visby, and which colours came to dominate the time period? The methods used for answeringthese questions have partly been field studies on site and sampling of selected buildings, andpartly critical reading and observation of iconographic material (paintings, drawings, aquarelles, postcards and photographs). The field study includes about 45 objects, in which a number ofsamples are taken from each building element (mouldings, plaster, windows and doors). Thesamples were first analysed ocularly as cross sections. A selection of cross sections have then beenanalysed by means of scanning electron microscopy analysis. The results show a unitary colourscheme, based on earth pigment and carbon black. The dwellings erected during the 19th centuryin Visby, represent a significant part of its building stock, and the lack of scientifically groundedresearches makes implementation of adequate maintenance difficult. It also appears that a largenumber of these dwellings have recently been (or are soon to be) restored, causing a serious lossof primary source of information, as well as affecting town and streetscape with new colourings.

Impact of high versus low density special care units on the behavior of elderly residents with dementia

Morgan, Debra Gail 01 January 1996 (has links)
The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of environmental density on the behavior (Disruptive and Nondisruptive) of elderly residents with dementia living on a special care unit. A building project that led to relocation of residents from high density units to units that varied in density (low vs. high) provided a natural context for this study. Disruptive and Nondisruptive behavior are composite variables that together include the full range of behavioral responses. Both are composed of several subvariables. Data were collected using direct behavioral observation using the Environment-Behavior Interaction Code (Stewart & Hiscock, 1992b) and a hand-held computer. The first objective of the study was to examine behavior patterns in relation to density and privacy. This objective was addressed with a quasi-experimental design (Study 1), in which three hypotheses were tested. It was predicted that residents who moved from a high density unit to a low density unit would exhibit a greater reduction in rate of Disruptive behavior (Hypothesis 1) and a greater increase in rate of Nondisruptive behavior (Hypothesis 2), compared to residents in a constant high density condition. It was also predicted that use of Private Time (time spent alone in one's bedroom) would be greater on the low density unit, where residents had private rooms (Hypothesis 3). Results of Study 1 provided support for Hypotheses 1 and 2, in relation to comparisons with the External Comparison Group only. Within subjects analyses provided additional support for Hypothesis 1 (Disruptive behavior). Hypothesis 3 (Private Time) was also supported. The second objective of the study was to explore the perceptions of family and staff caregivers with regard to the effect of the environment on resident behavior. This study was addressed with a qualitative design (Study 2) using the grounded theory method. Participants in Study 2 described the needs of residents with dementia in relation to the physical and social environment, and the outcomes that occurred when these needs were met or not met. Studies In Architecture And Reconstruction Of Udabno Iii-house

Yarma, Ozgecan 01 December 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The Udabno Project is an archaeological fieldwork in Eastern Georgia which includes three settlements from ca. 11th 10th century BC (Udabno I, II and III). The project aims to provide information about the settlement of this period of time. Extensive surveys including geomagnetic prospection took place before the excavations and these are all reveal proto-urban settlement structures. In this project, one of the most important investigations is the pit dwellings, which are located in the middle of the settlement. The primary goal of this thesis is to reveal the construction process of those pit dwelling, House D, at Iron Age Udabno III by studying the excavation reports in order to be able to understand Udabno within its chronological and geographical context as well as shed light on the societal structure.
