The library as place : a study of the experiences and perceptions of community libraries users in the Moretele Local MunicipalitySepeng, Itumeleng 02 1900 (has links)
Bibliography: leaves 97-104 / In this dissertation I examine the public's use of two community libraries in the Moretele local municipality. My research focused on who uses the libraries, for what purpose the libraries are being used, and patrons’ perceptions of the libraries. Data was collected using three methods namely interviews, observations in the form of seating sweeps and written patron surveys. The data collected show that the libraries play an important role in the information and social needs of the communities. They are highly valued for the resources they provide such as study space, books and photocopiers. The libraries are also greatly utilised by local communities, especially UNISA students, and function as public and third places. As public spaces they offer the community a space to meet, work together and discuss issues that are of importance to the community. As third places, the libraries offer ideal places for people, especially the youth, to play and socialise. Manifestations of corruption in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan MunicipalityLekubu, Bernard Khotso 02 1900 (has links)
This study was conducted as a result of the various media reports, various law enforcement investigation reports, Public Service Commission, reports of the Auditor General South Africa and the Public Protector South Africa on corruption and the various forms in which corruption manifests itself in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and the effectiveness of the various law enforcement agencies and the government in tackling the scourge of corruption in public and private institutions. While South Africa has various anti-corruption strategies, they all seem to be ineffective and have thus far not achieved their desired results. A qualitative research approach was used to investigate this problem. A thorough literature study and documentary analysis was used to gather all the relevant data related to this topic.
It has been found that the most common manifestations of corruption that take place in the South African public service are fraud, bribery, extortion, nepotism, conflict of interest, cronyism, favouritism, theft, graft, embezzlement and abuse of power. Other forms of corruption that raise concern are, for example, influence-peddling, insider trading/abuse of privileged information, bid-rigging and kickbacks. South Africa has, on the other hand, seven anti-corruption institutions and seventeen pieces of legislation which are intended to combat corruption in the public and private sector. These pieces of legislation give South African law enforcement and investigators in the public and private sectors a clear mandate with a view to investigating the high levels of corruption.
It is the submission of the Public Service Commission (2011:vi) that corruption has become a global concern that seriously hampers development in any country and diverts its resources from where they are needed the most. Examining compliance procedures in the investigation of tender irregularitiesMahlangu, Glenda Safedi 05 1900 (has links)
This study examined the investigation of tender irregularities within the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality (CoT) and employed semi-structured interviews with investigators attached to the CoT Group Audit and Risk (GAR) Division within the Protection Service to obtain data. A literature study relating to aspects of tender irregularities and the investigation of non-compliance was conducted. From the results of this research, it appears that participants do not optimally investigate the non-compliance of tender procedures by service providers to reduce tender irregularities within the CoT. However, it is apparent that participants experience challenges to efficiently investigate the non-compliance of tender procedures by service providers within the CoT to reduce tender irregularities. The study makes recommendations that could assist investigators at the CoT GAR Division to enhance their investigations of the non-compliance of tender procedures by service providers. / Criminology and Security Science / M. Abstracts in English and Venda / This study was an investigation of the effect of political communication strategies on voting behaviour. The area of study was Diepsloot in the north of Johannesburg. Various questions were explored such as; what kind of communication strategies have the top three South African political parties (ANC, DA & EFF) used in the past South African general elections in 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019, do political parties pre-election communication strategies influence Diepsloot voters voting decision and lastly how do Diepsloot voters relate to domestic political parties' communications and messages during elections period? The study followed a qualitative research paradigm with the use of interviews to gather information. At an aggregate level, it is often said that what political organisations do, say or do not say have a bearing on their supporters when election time arrives. Voting behaviour theories were also utilised as a theoretical foundation for understanding voters' psychic. Broadly, this study aimed to investigate the effects of political communications on voters' decision-making process. The focus was on the top three political parties in South Africa being the African National Congress, The Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters. Using thematic analysis, this study identified a variety of issues that influence voting behaviour. Among other findings, the study revealed that while political communication affects voters' choice, some voters continuously vote for a political party that has some historical importance. Other findings suggest that political communication alone is not enough to lure voters; voters are looking for material benefits when considering who to vote for. The study also revealed that the young generation of voters, mostly referred to as 'born-frees,' are much more engaging before choosing a party of their choice. Grade 9 learners’ perceptions of factors influencing their academic performance in mathematics in Tshwane Municipality, South AfricaOdeyemi, Bamidele Segun Donald 29 March 2021 (has links)
The present study investigated Grade 9 learners’ perceptions of factors influencing their academic performance in Mathematics in Tshwane municipality, South Africa. The study was based on positivism paradigm. The quantitative research approach was used while the research design was a descriptive survey design. The sample was made up of 400 learners (280 females and 120 males). Convenient sampling method was employed as a result of the nature of data. A self-designed questionnaire was administered to collect data. Data were analysed using quantitative approach with the statistical package for the social sciences, version 24.0, and the few open ended data on strategies for improving learners’ performance were analysed deductively. Frequency tables and ratios were calculated to establish the rating of each item. A Chi-square test was used to establish relationships of the variables on learners’ Mathematics performance. The study revealed that the Grade 9 learners perceived the factors influencing their performance in Mathematics were teacher-learner relationship, school environment and influence of learners’ attitude towards their performance in Mathematics, while peer relationship and home background (parents’ relationship and support) were perceived as not having any relationship with learners’ academic performance. The following recommendations were made to improve the Grade 9 learners’ performance in Mathematics, they are: policies that may consider Mathematics as a compulsory subject in the place of maths numeracy; there should be a regular in-service training for Mathematics teachers; parents should give adequate attention and care to their children in their Mathematics assignments; there should be provision of additional classrooms and infrastructures by the government and other stakeholders; learners should be encouraged to cultivate a more positive attitude towards Mathematics as a subject. Lastly, the study proposed a model for improving Grade 9 learners’ academic performance in Mathematics in Tshwane municipality, South Africa. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed. Managing the implementation of the national curriculum statements in Moretele secondary schoolsPhorabatho, Thabo Andries 05 1900 (has links)
The study investigates how the school management teams (SMTs) manage the implementation of the National Curriculum Statement (NCS). The NCS has been incrementally implemented as a curriculum change in the South African secondary schools’ Grades 10-12 from 2006.
In addition to literature review, this study employed empirical investigation based on qualitative research approach which involved three semi-structured focus group interviews to gather data from the six sampled schools in Moretele Area Project Office, North West Province.
The review of related literature reflected that SMTs are responsible for the successful implementation of curriculum change in schools.
The empirical findings revealed that SMTs experience challenges that overwhelm their function of managing the implementation of the NCS effectively. These challenges involve, poor training of SMTs, resources constraints, poor stakeholder involvement, policy overload, and lack of APO administrative support. This study aimed to evaluate the benefits of life skills training as a preventive
strategy for HIV and AIDS, for secondary school learners in one secondary school
in the Moretele District of Mpumalanga.
The objectives of this study were to determine the levels of learners’ knowledge
about HIV and AIDS, and levels of teacher training in life skills, to assess how
teachers’ and learners’ attitudes affect life skills training, to explore the
perceptions of teachers and learners regarding the usefulness of life skills training
in the prevention of HIV transmission and to assess the usefulness of the learning
and teaching support materials (LTSM) used in life skills training. The study also
investigated the challenges encountered by learners and teachers in life skills
training in order to make recommendations for improvements.
This is a qualitative evaluation study that involved qualitative focus group
interviews, qualitative semi-structured interviews and qualitative observation.
Sampling was purposive and it entailed 30 grade 9 learners and 2 grade 9 Life
Orientation teachers. The Health Belief Model and Social Cognitive Theory
formed the theoretical framework for this study.
The results of the study showed that the aspects which significantly benefited
learners were: sufficiently acceptable levels of knowledge about HIV and AIDS,
the use of other resources from the library, and development of positive attitudes
of learners and teachers involved in life skills. Aspects of life skills training which
demonstrated partial benefits for the learners were teacher training and
involvement of parents and other health care professionals. However, aspects
which were less developed were the learners’ and teachers’ knowledge and

Many families have been deprived access to basic human needs like food, clothing, shelter, protection, education and health services because of poverty. In South Africa poverty remains a challenge, resulting from economic and social inequalities, where 40% of its population still live in poverty (Landman, Bhorat, Van der Berg & Van Aardt 2003). The study aimed at ascertaining and describing the needs identified by adult members living in poverty, in the Lukhanji Municipality.
The researcher used a probability, systematic, random sampling method to obtain respondents for the study. A non-experimental, descriptive, quantitative research approach was adopted. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 150 respondents, after which a numerical data analysis was done with the assistance of a statistician.
Unemployment could be ascribed to lack of education and skills, which exposed families to poor living conditions, ill-health, insecurity and other social ills. Recommendations were made to solve these problems. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)

The smallholder livestock farmer in South Africa is in a difficult position, not only grappling with a changing global environment, but at the local front, without access to domestic markets. This is due to very limited knowledge of buyer requirements emanating from lack of marketing information. This limits adequate access to livestock markets by smallholder farmers in South Africa and more specifically in the Moretele area of the North West Province, resulting in limited growth and less disposable income. Some of the problems facing the smallholder livestock farmer are a lack of understanding of buyer requirements regarding livestock product characteristics, industry price determination processes, alternative marketing channels and how to promote livestock. Empowerment and equitable access to markets by these farmers can only be realised when knowledge is disseminated and training and capacity building is enhanced. It is especially an understanding of what the market requires, how price determination occurs and how marketing channels and promotional tools are used in the livestock industry that is lacking. / Business Management / M.
