After postmodernism : cultures, community and radical democracyGilbert, Jeremy January 2000 (has links)
This thesis sets out to elaborate a theoretical framework for Cultural Studies which specifically informed by post-Marxist theory and committed to a radical democratic politics of community. The late work of Raymond Williams is taken as exemplifying Marxist cultural theory and is re-read in the light of Laclau and Mouffe's deconstruction of the Marxist tradition. As a result, a framework is offered for the analysis of 'cultural' formations which seeks to preserve Williams' concern with rigorously assessing the politicality of such formations in a manner appropriate to a radical democratic politics. The thesis then turns its attention to key areas of debate and ambiguity within postMarxist cultural theory. In particular, the debate over the epistemological status of psychoanalysis is addressed. This debate is seen to give rise to an important set of questions regarding the relationships between deconstruction, psychoanalysis and historicism and their relative implications for understanding the nature of subjectivity andsociality. A number of different models of individual and social processes of identification are examined. It is argued that it is necessary to maintain and deploy models which are capable of understanding such processes as forms of irreducibly social experience in ways which models grounded in psychoanalysis cannot do, but without simply discarding the legacy of psychoanalysis altogether. The final section of the thesis applies the theoretical frameworks thus far developed to the study of recent British culture. In the first of these studies, the phenomenon of 'Britpop' is understood as deeply bound up with the success of New Labour and its attempted mobilisation of an inclusive yet socially conservative model of both British identity and political participation. The second study contrasts Britpop /Blairism with contemporary 'dance' culture, characterised as it is by radically democratic tendencies and the absence of any hegemonic project.

Re-formed rock: designing waste rock piles for the post production landscapeMcKichan, Stephanie 09 September 2013 (has links)
The natural landscape of western North America is being destroyed in the search for mineral resources. There is an opportunity for Landscape Architecture to play a role in the remediation of these sites, in which alternate reclamation plans can be proposed.
This project is an exploration of industrial design in the early stages of a mine proposal. By analyzing the site as it sits prior to production, careful consideration of existing landscape elements can aid in better placement of waste material. Communication between the mining industry and affected communities allows for contributions to the final site design and the potential for an alternative end land use. Throughout this project I have explored layering the numerous industrial, social and environmental factors involved, and creating a design where these layers are represented in partnership with each other.

Correlation of roof loads to wind speed and direction on a post-frame building in real timeOrchard, David 16 January 2012 (has links)
In 2004 a post-frame structure with plastered straw bales as an in-fill wall system was built at the University of Manitoba. Load cells installed at the top and bottom of ten eave wall posts were intended to measure the tributary load transferred from the roof structure into the supporting posts. In 2011 wind speed and direction were measured adjacent to the structure and correlated to simultaneous load data. A linear regression model relating load to wind speed within four directional quadrants revealed that load behaviour was inconsistent with design-level loading prescribed by the National Building Code of Canada (2005). A second regression model with both speed and direction as independent variables did not determine any statistically significant relationships. This research concluded that the initial assumptions made in 2004 required additional scrutiny, including the conditions under which the load cells were calibrated, and the structural contribution of the walls’ plastered skins.

The experience of caring for a close relative who suffered a stroke : A litterature studyNordqvist, Erica, Spets, Belinda January 2015 (has links)

The British High Commissioners in Germany : some aspects of their role in Anglo-German relations, 1949-1955Schwepcke, Barbara January 1991 (has links)
Between 1949 and 1955 the supreme authority in the newly established Federal Republic of Germany did not lie in the hands of the elected representatives, but in the hands of the representatives of the three Western Occupying Powers, the Allied High Commissioners. Surprisingly quickly the character and the role of the Allied High Commission changed and it devolved more and more of its power to the German Government. This thesis recounts the history of the Allied High Commission from the perspective of the British High Commissioner. Three men consecutively held this position: Sir Brian Robertson, Sir Ivone Kirkpatrick, and Sir Frederick Hoyer Millar. They were three very different men, who had different perceptions of their role, different tasks to accomplish, and different degrees of influence on events in Germany and British policy on Germany. The three men are given epithets, which either describe their perception of their role as British High Commissioner in Germany or the role itself, and which serve as themes for the three main parts of the thesis. Sir Brian Robertson was called a "Benevolent and Sympathetic Viceroy" by his biographer, which not only describes Robertson's own perception of his role in Germany, but also is the best indication of the vast powers of the Allied High Commissioners at the beginning. His successor, Sir Ivone Kirkpatrick, was charged with negotiating the end of the Allied High Commission and for this act of self-eradication is given the epithet "The Negotiator". If it had not been for the French delay of the ratification of the 1952 treaties, Sir Frederick Hoyer Millar would have been the first British Ambassador to Germany. Instead he held the title fo British High Commissioner for his first two years in Germany, although for all intents and purposes he was an "Ambassador in Waiting".
