Biomonitoring studies with raptor birds can be used to evaluate environmental pollution and consequencies to human and environmental health. Levels of metals and insecticides in blood of eagle owl chicks from Southeastern Spain were in general low, being lead levels significantly higher in individuals born in an ancient mining area. The enzime δ-ALAD is a sensitive biomarker of exposure and effect to lead in this species. The study of organochlorine and PBDEs in unhatched eggs suggests dietary shifts or pollutant sources. Eggshell thickness decreased with increasing p,p’-DDE, reaching a level related to population declines in birds when DDE levels exceded 100 ng/g lipid weight. The development of a new tecnique permited the detection of rodenticide residues in 83% of the liver samples.

The aim of the diploma thesis was to create the functional core of geographic information system (GIS) of hiking trails in the Eagle Mountains including the spatial analysis. The first part, more theoretical, is dedicated to the brief description of the theory and initial analysis before the particular creation of GIS. In the second part, more practical, the process of the respective task is described from the data collection to data editing, creating the core of GIS, spatial analysis and final visualization.

Návrh a konstrukce dvoukolového mobilního robotu / Design and Construction of a Two-Wheel Mobile RobotMeisl, Milan January 2011 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with a design and construction of a two-wheeled mobile robot. In order to prepare a high-quality project, a testing carriage has been constructed serving as a basis of useful information for the final design and construction. Beside introduction and conclusion, the diploma thesis consists of four main parts. While the first part of the thesis briefly introduces the field of robotics, the theoretical part focuses both on particular components necessary for the robot's construction as well as the Segway vehicle which served as an inspiration for the robot's functionality. After characteristics of a testing carriage, attention is devoted to individual methods of stabilization, with several different types of sensors being used. Furthermore, the chapter on mechanical design examines choice of devices and their position and provides a scheme for their construction. The electrical design follows afterwards, describing circuits that were considered optimal for the designed wiring. The forth part of the diploma thesis concentrates on the construction of a two-wheeled carriage and covers following topics: construction of mechanical components, production of electric boards, programmatic equipment of the carriage and its implementation, testing of the carriage and finally also an evaluation of achieved results.

USING AIRBORNE HYPERSPECTRAL IMAGERY TO ESTIMATE CHLOROPHYLL A AND PHYCOCYANIN IN THREE CENTRAL INDIANA MESOTROPHIC TO EUTROPHIC RESERVOIRSSengpiel, Rebecca Elizabeth 08 August 2007 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This thesis presents the results of an analysis of predicting phytoplankton pigment concentrations (chlorophyll a and phycocyanin) from remotely sensed imagery. Hyperspectral airborne and hand-held reflectance spectra were acquired on three reservoirs (Geist, Morse and Eagle Creek) in Central Indiana, USA. Concurrent with the reflectance acquisition, in situ samples were collected and analyzed in laboratories to quantify the pigment concentration and other water quality parameters. The resultant concentration was then linked to Airborne Imaging Spectrometer for Applications (AISA) reflectance spectra for the sampling stations to develop predictive models. AISA reflectance spectra were extracted from the imagery which had been processed for radiometric calibration and geometric correction. Several previously published algorithms were examined for the estimation of pigment concentration from the spectra. High coefficients of determination were achieved for predicting chlorophyll a in two of the three reservoirs (Geist R2 = 0.712, Morse R2 = 0.895 and Eagle Creek Reservoir R2 = 0.392). This situation was similar for PC prediction, where two of the three reservoirs had high coefficients of determination between pigment concentration and reflectance (Geist R2 = 0.805, Morse R2 = 0.878 and Eagle Creek Reservoir R2 = 0.316). The results of this study show that reflectance spectra collected with an airborne hyperspectral imager are statistically significant, p < 0.03, in predicting chlorophyll a and phycocyanin pigment concentration in all three reservoirs in this study without the consideration of other parameters. The algorithms were then applied to the AISA image to generate high spatial resolution (1 m2) maps of Chlorophyll a and Phycocyanin distribution for each reservoir.

Taste and Odor Event Dynamics of a Midwestern Freshwater ReservoirHoward, Chase Steven 11 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Eagle Creek Reservoir (ECR), located in the Midwestern U.S., is a freshwater limnic system plagued by seasonal Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) which generate water-fouling Geosmin (GSM) and 2-Methylisoborneol (MIB) Taste and Odor (T&O) compounds. Past investigations of T&O event dynamics have identified Actinomycetes as responsible for MIB production and several genera of cyanobacteria for GSM production. During 2018, a temporally and spatially expansive sampling regimen of the reservoir was carried out and a battery of biological, chemical, physical, and hyperspectral experiments performed. The resulting data was analyzed using time series, cross-correlation, lag time, and multivariate analyses as well as machine learning algorithms to pick apart and interrogate any relationships between HABs, T&O events, and environmental parameters. The results show that local weather and watershed conditions exert significant control over the state of the reservoir and the behavior of the algal community. GSM and MIB peaked during early May under well-mixed, cold, and nutrient-rich water column conditions, then declined under summer thermal stratification before making a small resurgence during late season mixing. Bloom die-off and decay was effectively ruled out as a mechanism controlling T&O concentrations, and no links were found between T&O concentrations and algal biomass. Strong evidence was found that GSM/MIB concentrations were a response by bloom microbes to changing nutrient conditions within the reservoir, and it was determined that nutrient fluxes from the watershed 30-40 days prior to peak T&O concentrations are likely instrumental in the development of the slow-
ix
growing microbes characteristic of the reservoir. Attempts were made to assess spatial and temporal variability but no significant spatial differences were identified; differences between sampling sites were far smaller than differences between different sampling dates. The findings here add to the growing body of literature showing T&O and HAB dynamics are more closely linked to the relative abundance and speciation of nutrients than other parameters. Additionally, these findings carry important implications for the management of ECR and other similar freshwater reservoirs while highlighting the importance of reducing watershed eutrophication.
