Invasive Earthworm (Oligochaeta: Lumbricidae) Populations in varying Vegetation Types on a Landscape- and Local-scale

There have been no landscape-scale studies on earthworm populations in Canada comparing vegetation types; previous studies on edge habitats have been conducted in agricultural systems. I examined the spatial variations of earthworm populations by measuring abundance based on regional municipality, vegetation type, and edge habitat. Earthworms were sampled throughout the season across a gradient of vegetation types including meadow, forest edge, and interior at a local-scale; and at the landscape level with vegetation types including meadow, deciduous forest, pine plantation and mixed forest. Regional effects were more significant than vegetation type likely due to a gradient of soil characteristics in southern Ontario; edges had intermediate earthworm abundance and a higher proportion of epigeic species. My research provides insight into the patterns of earthworm populations in southern Ontario and the possible effects of edge creation through landscape fragmentation. Field sampling of earthworm parasitoid cluster-flies (Calliphoridae: Pollenia) using synomones was also discussed.

Ecological interactions influencing Avicennia germinans propagule dispersal and seedling establishment at mangrove-saltmarsh boundaries

Mangroves and saltmarshes are ecologically important coastal ecosystems; unfortunately, these low-lying coastal ecosystems are vulnerable to global climate change. As sea-levels rise, mangroves are expected to shift their distribution landward towards higher elevation sites that are occupied by other plants, including saltmarsh taxa. Therefore, mangrove recruits at the leading edge of expansion may interact with diverse assemblages of saltmarsh plants, and these interactions could influence the success of mangrove encroachment into higher tidal-elevation areas. The purpose of the research presented here was to investigate empirically the ecological interactions that may influence the recruitment of the black mangrove, Avicennia germinans, into saltmarsh habitats. Saltmarsh plants frequently occurred at the landward boundary of mangrove forests at two sites selected for field studies along the west coast of Florida: Cannon Island and Upper Tampa Bay Park. On Cannon Island, two different field tests investigated mangrove propagule entrapment and dispersal within saltmarsh vegetation. In the first experiment, the entrapment of mangrove propagules within saltmarsh plants, exhibiting different growth forms, was examined during seasonal high tide events. Natural polyculture plots retained a mean (±;SE) 59.3% (±;11.0) of emplaced propagules. Monocultures varied in their propagule retention capacities with plots of S. virginicus retaining on average 65.7% (±;11.5) of transplanted propagules compared to 7.2% (±;1.8) by B. maritima and 5.0% (±;1.9) by S. portulacastrum. Monocultures of the salt marsh grass, Sporobolus virginicus, and natural saltmarsh polycultures containing S. virginicus retained significantly more propagules than either of two succulent plants (i.e., Batis maritima and Sesuvium portulacastrum). Using digital images, saltmarsh plant structure was quantified; the number of entrapped mangrove propagules displayed a significant and positive correlation (r2 = 0.6253, p = 0.00001) with the amount of structure provided by saltmarsh plants. Therefore, the first field study identified structural and functional differences between saltmarsh plants. A second field study employed marked propagules in order to further examine the dispersal patterns of propagules at saltmarsh boundaries comprised of plants with different growth forms (i.e., grass vs. succulent) during seasonal high tides. Saltmarsh plant boundaries erected by taxa with distinct growth forms differentially influenced the proportion of propagules that dispersed seaward and the distance propagules moved seaward. In fact, nearly twice as many propagules dispersed seaward at boundaries erected by succulent plants compared to boundaries composed of grass. The results of this field study support my previous findings that propagule dispersal is comparatively lower in saltmarsh grass than in succulent saltmarsh plants. The findings from these two field studies suggest that the permeability of boundaries formed by saltmarsh plants may modulate landward dispersal of A. germinans propagules. The final field study was conducted at Upper Tampa Bay Park, where a second species of saltmarsh grass, Monanthochloe littoralis, co-occurred with the grass, S. virginicus, and succulent saltmarsh plants to form a mosaic landscape of saltmarsh plant patches. Patches were weeded to create 3 saltmarsh treatments: 1) M. littoralis monoculture; 2) S. virginicus monoculture; and 3) polycultures containing both grasses and at least one other saltmarsh taxa. Propagules of A. germinans were emplaced into saltmarsh patches and followed for 11 weeks. On the last sampling date, the greatest number of A. germinans (n = 51) had successfully established as seedlings within the M. littoralis monoculture plots. In contrast, only 20 (22% of the propagules initially emplaced) A. germinans seedlings established in S. virginicus monoculture plots. These findings suggest that among grass taxa, species identity influences mangrove establishment success, which builds upon our previous findings that demonstrated that saltmarsh growth form (i.e., grass vs. succulent) influenced mangrove propagule dispersal. Combined the findings from these field studies indicate that interactions among the early life history stages of black mangroves and neighboring plants influence mangrove recruitment. Specifically, these field studies provide empirical evidence that the species composition of saltmarsh plants influences mangrove propagule dispersal and seedling establishment. The work presented here has implications for understanding the suite of ecological interactions that may influence mangrove encroachment into saltmarsh habitats at higher tidal elevations as sea-levels rise.

Les mares forestières temporaires sont de petites zones humides d’eau douce, sujettes à de fortes dégradations. Le fonctionnement des mares naturelles et restaurées a été étudié en se basant sur les taux de décomposition de la matière organique (MO) et sur l’effet de facilitation d’une plante vasculaire (Molinia caerulea, molinie) sur la croissance des sphaignes (Sphagnum palustre). Les taux de décomposition de la MO dans l’eau ne différaient pas entre les mares naturelles et restaurées mais ils étaient influencés par la teneur en carbone organique du sol, l’ouverture de la canopée forestière et le couvert en sphaignes. Dans le sol de la zone de transition mare-forêt, ces taux étaient réduits par la saturation en eau et par un couvert molinie-sphaignes. La présence de la molinie diminuait la croissance des sphaignes, suggérant une compétition. Les résultats de cette étude contribuent à l’écologie de la restauration de ces mares et questionnent leur devenir dans un contexte de changement climatique. / Vernal pools are small freshwater wetlands, subject to strong degradations. The functioning of natural and restored vernal pools was studied, based on organic matter (OM) decomposition rates and the facilitation effect of a vascular plant (Molinia caerulea, purple-moor grass) on Sphagnum growth (Sphagnum palustre). The rates of OM decomposition in water were not different between natural and restored pools, but they were influenced by soil organic carbon content, tree canopy openness and Sphagnum cover. In the soil of the pool-forest transition zone, these rates were reduced by water logging and by a Molinia-Sphagnum cover. The presence of Molinia decreased Sphagnum growth, suggesting a competition relationship. The results of this study contribute to the restoration ecology of vernal pools and raise the question of their fate in the climate change context.

Padrões de diversidade de aves e rede de interação mutualística ave-planta em mosaico floresta-campo

Estudos clássicos com diversidade taxonômica, apesar de serem essenciais, não consideram as diferenças funcionais entre as espécies de uma comunidade. A abordagem considerando atributos funcionais e diversidade funcional vem preenchendo esta lacuna. A compreensão da estrutura e dinâmica de interações mutualísticas também é um elemento essencial em estudos de biodiversidade, permitindo a investigação de mecanismos ecológicos e evolutivos. Porém, a maioria dos estudos com redes de interação disponíveis na bibliografia são pequenas em número de espécies e interações, e é possível que estes dados não tenham sido suficientemente amostrados. Além disto, estudos têm mostrado que muitas métricas utilizadas em análises de rede de interação são sensíveis ao esforço amostral e ao tamanho da rede. Os objetivos desta tese foram: 1) investigar a diversidade taxonômica (DT) e funcional (DF) de aves e os padrões de organização de espécies de aves em comunidades refletindo convergência de atributos (TCAP: Trait Convergence Assembly Patterns) ao longo de transições entre floresta e campo; 2) analisar a estrutura de redes de dispersão de sementes de plantas por aves, utilizando as métricas de rede aninhamento, modularidade, conectância e distribuição do grau; 3) desenvolver um método estatístico visando avaliar suficiência amostral para métricas de redes de interação usando o método bootstrap de reamostragem com reposição. A composição de espécies de aves diferiu entre os ambientes, indicando uma substituição de espécies ao longo da transição floresta-borda-campo. DT diferiu significativamente somente entre floresta e borda de floresta, enquanto que ambas diferiram significativamente do campo em relação à DF. DT e DF podem indicar diferentes processos de organização de comunidades ao longo de mosaicos floresta-campo. A correlação significativa entre TCAP e o gradiente floresta-campo indica que provavelmente mecanismos de nicho atuam na organização da comunidade de aves, associados a mudanças na estrutura do habitat ao longo da transição floresta-borda-campo agindo como filtros ecológicos. Redes de dispersão de sementes de plantas por aves aparentemente apresentam um processo comum de organização, independentemente das diferenças na intensidade de amostragem e continentes onde as 19 redes utilizadas foram amostradas. Usando reamostragem bootstrap, encontramos que suficiência amostral pode ser alcançada com diferentes tamanhos amostrais (número de eventos de interação) para o mesmo conjunto de dados, dependendo da métrica de rede utilizada. / Classic studies on taxonomic diversity, though essential, do not consider the functional differences between species in a community. Understanding the structure and dynamics of mutualistic interactions is also essential for biodiversity studies and allows the investigation of ecological and evolutionary mechanisms. Bird species composition indicated species turnover between forest, forest edge and grassland. Regarding TD, only forest and edges differed. FD was significantly different between grassland and forest, and between grassland and edges. TD and FD responded differently to environmental change from forest to grassland, since they may capture different processes of community assembly along such transitions. Trait-convergence assembly patterns indicated niche mechanisms underlying assembly of bird communities, linked to changes in habitat structure across forest-edge-grassland transitions acting as ecological filters. Environmental factors controlling the position of the actual timberline and treeline on the fells of Finnish Lapland

Abstract Air and soil temperatures, snow cover, serious snow load damage to coniferous trees, wind, topography and edaphic factors on the fells situated between 67°N and 68°N in Finnish Lapland are described and their influence on the location of the actual timberline and treeline is discussed. In addition the relation between annual climate conditions and pollen deposition in the timberline ecotone is analysed and the results of seedling density monitoring in the same environment are presented. The potential for the actual timberline and treeline to advance to a higher elevation is also discussed. The field studies were carried out on the fells of Aakenustunturi, Yllästunturi and Pyhätunturi. The average altitude of the actual timberline varies from 370 metres to 402 metres a.s.l. The actual timberline is hardly ever composed of a single tree species but featured alternating occurrences of Norway spruce (Picea abies), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerpanovii). The mean tetratherms on the southern and northern slopes (+10.3°C and +10.1°C, respectively), the mean maximum tetratherm on the southern slope (+15.1°C) and the corresponding measures for the treeline (460 m a.s.l), the minimum tetratherm (+6.3°C), mean July temperature (+12.6°C), biotemperature (+3.3°C) and minimum effective temperature sum (455 d.d.), coincide closest with the results of earlier studies. The maximum altitudes of the actual timberline are dictated by many climatic factors on southern and western slopes with a gentle inclination, and the forest cover gradually becomes thinner, in which case the actual timberline does not form any easily distinguishable line. The lowest altitudes of the actual timberline are the results of an extremely high proportion of block fields, slope steepness and snow patches on the northern and eastern slopes. On the precipitous and rocky slopes trees have difficulties in taking root and in obtaining nutrients and water, while as a consequence of snow patches the growing season may be too short for tree growth at all, and if trees exist there they are suffering from low soil temperature and parasitic snow fungi. Serious snow load damage to trees evidently hampers any advance in the actual timberline, as do avalanches and mires. The location of the treeline is the result of a combination of a great number of unfavourable conditions for tree regeneration, seedling establishment and tree growth, such as inadequate snow protection, extreme soil temperatures, almost total destruction of trees by the snow load, wind pressure, an often inadequate effective temperature sum and length of the growing season, night frost in early summer, and poor, dry soil suffering from excessive evaporation. Actual timberline responses to predicted climate warming will differ greatly from site to site in relation to the local topography, edaphic features and associated ecological limitations. Any advance in the treeline to a higher elevation is likely to be slower and at least less certain than that in the actual timberline. In addition, advances in the actual timberline and treeline may even be prevented by phenomena occurring along with climate change. A potential key factor in this is serious snow load damage to the trees.

Influence of Habitat on the Reproductive Ecology of the Amazonian Palm, Mauritia flexuosa, in Roraima, Brazil

Although Mauritia flexuosa (Arecaceae) plays a pivotal role in the ecology and economy of the Amazon, and occurs in a variety of habitats, little is known about the influence of habitat on the reproductive biology of this palm. My dissertation focuses on the reproductive biology of M. flexuosa in three habitats in Roraima, Brazil: undisturbed forest, undisturbed forest-savanna ecotone, and savanna disturbed by plantations of the exotic tree, Acacia mangium. First, I calculated sex ratios and linked precipitation patterns with phenology. Sex ratios were female-biased. Precipitation was negatively associated with flowering, and positively associated with fruiting. Habitat appears to have no significant influence on phenology of M. flexuosa, although short-term climate variation may affect phenology of this species. Second, I examined floral biology, observed floral visitors, and performed exclusion experiments to determine the pollination system of M. flexuosa. Fruit set did not differ significantly between the visitor exclusion treatment and the control, but was significantly lowest in the wind + visitor exclusion treatment, suggesting that this dioecious palm is anemophilous, independent of habitat. Third, I identified the abiotic and biotic factors explaining variation in fruit mass, seed mass, seed number per fruit, and total fruit yield among habitats. Soil moisture and flooding during the wet season were the best predictors of fruit and seed output. The number of leaves, diameter at breast height, and height were all accurate predictors of reproductive output, but crown volume did not accurately predict fruit yields. Results re-evaluate traditional assumptions about wind-pollination in the tropics, and highlight abiotic and biotic factors responsible for variation in reproductive output of M. flexuosa, with implications for effective management of this palm. Finally, I interviewed harvesters and vendors to document the traditional knowledge and market dynamics of the fruit of M. flexuosa, buriti. Traditional knowledge corroborated results from scientific studies. Vendors argued that the price of buriti must increase, and must fluctuate with varying supply. With appropriate economic incentives to vendors/harvesters, Roraima may expand its market infrastructure for buriti, effectively stimulating the regional economy and practicing sustainable harvesting.

An Assessment of Riparian Buffer Effectiveness in the Upper Hickory Creek Watershed: A GIS Approach Using the Riparian Buffer Delineation Equation (RBDE) and the Buffer Improvement Potential Percentage (BP)

As population increases and urbanization occurs, watershed management will be critical in the protection of water resources in North Central Texas. By 2040, Denton County will nearly double its 2010 population. The Upper Hickory Creek Watershed lies west of Denton and empties into Lake Lewisville. Lake Lewisville provides drinking water for Denton, Dallas, and other neighboring cities. Mitigation of non-point source pollutants as a result of urban and agricultural practices is essential to protecting Lake Lewisville water resources. A common best management practice used to mitigate pollutants is the protection of riparian ecotones that occupy river corridors; however, recent agricultural and urban practices are diminishing these ecosystems and their services. In this paper, the riparian buffer delineation equation (RBDE) is used to assess the current state of Upper Hickory Creek Watershed to aid in the monitoring of the riparian buffers along stream corridors. While the RBDE was used as pre-assessment tool for the riparian buffer effectiveness in the watershed, a new form of the equation was used to evaluate riparian buffer improvement potential (BP) in conjunction with Denton County parcel data to provide insights into buffer effectiveness and identify areas for improvement on a landowner scale.
