Landscape architecture in the Ag-Ed classroom: cultivating the next generation of designers

Wilson, Erin Marie January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / Howard D. Hahn / Landscape architecture education in schools have been focused primarily on elementary and secondary Common Core courses. In many states, career-oriented programs such as agricultural education serve as a platform to teach necessary skills to be successful in all aspects of the agricultural industry. With the shift in lifestyles and technology, agricultural education (Ag-Ed) today has branched out from the traditional farm management courses to food science, natural resources, and landscaping design as well as many others. At schools like Lennox High School in Lennox, South Dakota, students learn plant identification, fundamentals of landscape design, and design graphics. How comprehensive are students' awareness of the landscape architecture profession before, during, and after taking a landscaping course? What are the possibilities of reinforcing foundational skills learned in the landscaping coursework through an outdoor learning environment similar to practical application of other vocational-type courses? How could students be presented a snapshot of the landscape architecture profession that connects the current and future curriculum taught in the Ag-Ed classroom? In order to better understand the landscape architectural aspects of current Ag-Ed, a mixed methods approach was used. First, national, state, and local Ag-Ed curricula standards were reviewed to track how Ag-Ed courses and priorities have changed over time. Next, Ag-Ed students were surveyed before, during, and after taking the Landscaping and Horticultural course offered at Lennox High School to assess potential changes in awareness. Lastly, students currently taking the landscaping course participated in a three-day workshop where they developed ideas for their outdoor learning environment to support current and future Ag-Ed courses and landscape architecture. After the workshop, these students took a post-survey to evaluate ideas produced in the workshop, the future implementation of the workshop, and their level of awareness of the landscape architecture profession. Results from the surveys and workshop show a refinement and increase in landscape architecture awareness, a desire for more hands-on learning conducted outside, and an enthusiasm for using their creativity to design a project for future Ag-Ed students. In subsequent years, future iterations of the workshop will advance planning and design proposals toward implementation.

When Resistance is Not Enough: The Role of Ecotage in Radical Environmentalism

Brown, Kris R 01 January 2010 (has links)
As a starting point, I've created a simple, five step argument for my view on humanity's environmental responsibility. The first four steps are premises upon which I will elaborate to some degree over the course of this paper, and the fifth step is a conclusion that should necessarily follow from the premises if they are true. 1) Humans are currently threatening the earth's viability as a habitat for living thing. 2) Humans have a duty not to threaten the earth's viability as a habitat for living things. 3) Our duty not to threaten the viability of the earth as a habitat for living things is stronger than our duty to obey the law. 4) The exclusive use of traditional, legal attempts to change patterns of human behavior to eliminate their threat to the earth's viability as a habitat for living things is and will always be ineffective. 5) Therefore, when our duty not to threaten the earth's viability as a habitat for living things conflicts with our duty to obey the law, we ought first to satisfy the former.

Stanovení aminoglutethimidu pomocí HPLC-ED na uhlíkových pastách / Determination of aminoglutethimide using HPLC-ED on carbon pastes

Vlachová, Karolína January 2010 (has links)
In this thesis, the determination of AGT, sooner used as anticancer drug, especially for the treatment of breast cancer in postmenopausal women or for the treatment of prostate cancer, by high performance liquid chromatogramy with UV spectrophotometric detection (HPLC-UV) and electrochemical detection (HPLC-ED) on carbon paste electrodes (CPEs) was studied. CPEs were prepared from glassy carbon microspheres and different pasting liquids - routinely used mineral oil (CPE-MO) and less commonly used tricresylphosphate (CPE-TCP) and silicone oil (CPE-SO). The concentration dependences of AGT were measured by HPLC-UV with detection wavelength 242 nm, by HPLC-ED with a working potencial of +1,3 V for CPE-MO and + 1,1 V for CPE-TCP in mobile phase containing phosphate buffer (pH 4) and methanol 50:50 (v/v). The following limits of detection were achieved - 3,6. 10-7 mol.l-1 for UV spectrophotometric detection, 2,5. 10-7 mol.l-1 for electrochemical detection with CPE-MO and 9,7. 10-7 mol.l-1 for electrochemical detection with CPE-TCP. AGT was also determined in model samples of urine. With HPLC-UV it was not possible to detect AGT, because of the interferences of other compounds. With HPLC-ED on CPE-MO the limit of detection 5,2. 10-7 mol.l-1 AGT was achieved. KEY WORDS Aminoglutethimide HPLC with UV...

Comparison of Arcobacter butzleri ED-1 and Arcobacter L anode biofilm formation and a proteomic comparison of A. butzleri ED-1 at the anode of a half microbial fuel cell

Knighton, Matthew Charles January 2013 (has links)
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are electrochemical devices that exploit the ability of certain microorganisms to anaerobically respire using an insoluble terminal electron acceptor and therefore generate an electrical current. These bacteria are called electrogens or electrogenic bacteria. Two species of Arcobacter, Arcobacter butzleri ED-1 and Arcobacter L were isolated from the anodic chamber of an acetate fed MFC, and A. butzleri ED-1 was found to be the more electrogenic of the two bacteria. Arcobacter spp. are  proteobacteria and A. butzleri ED-1 and Arcobacter L were the first example of electrogenically active e proteobacteria. It was decided to study their interactions with the anode by fluorescent microscopy and study their electrogenic mechanisms by comparative proteomics using the iTRAQ method as it would allow for simultaneous identification and quantification of peptides in multiple samples. Fluorescent imaging over a period of 120 h in a half MFC showed that both A. butzleri ED-1 and Arcobacter L formed a thin anodic biofilm of a few cells thick and that A. butzleri ED-1 maintained a more stable anodic biofilm than Arcobacter L. iTRAQ analysis showed that the flagellin FlaA was up-regulated 2.4 fold at the anode but no other electron transport proteins or adhesins were upregulated. These results were distinct from those observed for other electrogenic bacteria (Geobacter sulfurreducens and Shewanella oneidensis MR-1) in previous studies which exhibited up-regulated electron transport proteins at the anode as well as forming an anodic biofilm of 50 μm thick. Therefore based on these results it was concluded that FlaA was most likely playing an important role A. butzleri ED-1 anode biofilm formation and that the mechanisms of electrogenesis in A. butzleri ED- 1 and Arcobacter L may be novel compared to those previously characterised. It was also concluded that one possible reason for A. butzleri ED-1 being more electrogenic than Arcobacter L was its ability to form a more stable anodic biofilm. It must be noted that both of these conclusions are highly speculative and further study is needed to elucidate the electrogenic mechanisms of A. butzleri ED-1 and to further compare biofilm formation between the two species.

The study about the co-opetition of electrodeposited copper foil industry in Taiwan

Lu, Ming-Chuan 26 July 2007 (has links)
Abstract Electrodeposited Copper Foil (ED Foil) is the most essential conductive material to PCB. With the recession of electronic industry and the appearance of Internet Economy Bubble for printed circuit board (PCB) industry, PCB industry slowed down its productivity around 2000 and the ED Foil industry in Taiwan had to face the vicious circle as the supply exceeds the demand. As for America, because of the declination of the industry, it is now almost out of the ED Foil industry which means that the global chief city of the field has changed from the States to Japan. However, with the high production costs and labor expenses, Japan is now suspending the enlargement of productivity, Therefore, the productivity of Taiwan till 2005 already ranked the top one in the world. Unfortunately, we are now facing the biggest competitor, China, who has tried enthusiastically to attract our ED Foil and PCB companies to move to his land, especially it has aimed the ED Foil industry as his top target to enkindle. This research has consulted several diverse documents from inside and outside Taiwan through the analyses of industrial structures, ¡§Diamond System¡¨ and ¡§SWOT Analysis¡¨ to have a clear understanding towards the construction of Taiwan¡¦s ED Foil industry and its ¡§competitive advantages¡¨. Owning these accomplished advantages as the base, we can come out the cooperative strategies for ED Foil industry¡¦s future and its ¡§Anti Competition Policy¡¨ according to the ¡§scenarios¡¨. We deeply hope that with these devices, we can strengthen the industrial¡¦s efficiency in our ED Foil¡¦s industry and at the same time, our status in this field can remain competitive around the world. The research found out that in ED Foil industry¡¦s area, the early players monopolized the market and twisted the market¡¦s efficiency at the same time. Therefore, those early players got the chance to earn a huge sum of money and as a result, some potential competitors joined the market to share the benefits. Besides, because of the rising concept of globalization among the mega electronic companies, more and more module and component companies are willing to be localized to correspond to the change. Simultaneously, the demand of both PCB and ED Foil has started to increase in Asia; therefore, the ED Foil industry in Taiwan is getting more and more prosperous because of the favorable geographical position. Moreover, high performing and large-sized facilities are adapted to produce high quality and low cost merchandizes efficiently to enhance the competitiveness in the industry. Therefore, the chain that connected with the downstream industry has become more completed and moreover, the bunching effect can be elaborate thoroughly. According to the research, we have discovered that there are many uncertainties within the operation of Taiwan¡¦s ED Foil industry such as the slight increase of the demand in Taiwan and the exports are overly centered on Hong Kong and China. Other concern like the percentage of the fixed prime cost is excessively high matters the efficiency of the productivity and as a result, a price war comes out easily because of the supply exceeds the demand. In the meantime, we have come out with the conclusion that the government should actively help the integration of the industry¡¦s future development. And we suggest that the ED Foil industry in Taiwan should take the co-opetition policy as follows: 1. The buying-associations that share the supplementary values of the recycling copper wires and R&D-associations can share the R&D cost in the area of the newly applying development will be erected to largely reduce the prime costs. Furthermore, an information exchange center will be provided for those associations to utilize others¡¦ useful experiences. 2. The business cooperative operations either with the same upstream or downstream companies all necessarily needed to be constructed. Those united cooperation such as Mergers & Acquisitions should be promoted within industries, including investments. These strategies will accelerate the development of the business. 3. New and prosperous markets such as Thailand and Vietnam need to be explored to disperse our export markets to decrease our dependency on China. 4. Complementary relationship and proper division of labors should be built up within cross-Strait without making other vicious competitions.

City logistics: trasporto merci in ambito urbano

Dezi, Giampaolo <1980> 27 May 2010 (has links)

Urban food planning, city logistics and sustainability: the role of the wholesale produce market. The cases of Parma and Bologna food hubs.

Morganti, Maria Eleonora <1980> 22 July 2011 (has links)
At global level, the population is increasingly concentrating in the cities. In Europe, around 75% of the population lives in urban areas and, according to the European Environmental Agency (2010), urban population is foreseen to increase up to 80 % by 2020. At the same time, the quality of life in the cities is declining and urban pollution keeps increasing in terms of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, waste, noise, and lack of greenery. Many of European cities struggle to cope with social, economic and environmental problems resulting from pressures such as overcrowding or decline, social inequity, health problems related to food security and pollution. Nowadays local authorities try to solve these problems related to the environmental sustainability through various urban logistics measures, which directly and indirectly affect the urban food supply system, thus an integrated approach including freight transport and food provisioning policies issues is needed. This research centres on the urban food transport system and its impact on the city environmental sustainability. The main question that drives the research analysis is "How the urban food distribution system affects the ecological sustainability in modern cities?" The research analyses the city logistics project for food transport implemented in Parma, Italy, by the wholesale produce market. The case study investigates the renewed role of the wholesale market in the urban food supply chain as commercial and logistic operator, referring to the concept of food hub. Then, a preliminary analysis on the urban food transport for the city of Bologna is presented. The research aims at suggesting a methodological framework to estimate the urban food demand, the urban food supply and to assess the urban food transport performance, in order to identify external costs indicators that help policymakers in evaluating the environmental sustainability of different logistics measures

Manlig och kvinnlig representation i ledarsidor bland svenska nyhetstidningar : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av svenska ledarsidor / Male and Female Representation in Swedish Newspapers : A Quantitative Content Analysis of swedish editorials

Norlander, Philip, Steen, Steff January 2018 (has links)
Recent studies show that when it comes to media exposure, men and women still face completely different conditions in how often and where they are placed in the context of news reports.   Men still stands for the vast majority of news content, and even though progress is being made it isn't going fast enough according to some and that more has to be done before we can have total equality in terms of who gets the opportunity the get their voices heard.   In this study we went in to take a closer look at how often the different sexes appears as writers on four of Swedens biggest newspapers op-ed pages. In our study we have conducted a quantitative content analysis on the op-ed pages in the for swedish papers Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Expressen and Svenska Dagbladet. We looked on how often any of the two sexes appeared, what subjects they were writing about and what types on news the texts were discussing.   What we found where that the op-ed pages actually where almost entirely equal in terms of who got to write, and what they were writing about. Although the analysis isn't big enough to be able to tell how the situation is across all of sweden's newspaper and media content, it still gives an interesting look on how the daily newspapers works when it comes to who gets a place at the op-ed pages.

Perguntas norteadoras estimularam as discussões.

BRAVIN, R. 28 July 2016 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-01T23:37:04Z (GMT).
