Silva, Helio Pedro da 24 September 2012 (has links)
This research aims to study how the brazilian automotive industry has addressed environmental sustainability in its advertisements speech. The initiative to gaze upon such a dimension of brand communication was prompted, particularly, by the antagonistic sense projected by automobile goods in contemporary society. On the one hand, admired as a mean of transportation and mobility, and facilitator of various expressions of identity. And, on the other hand, criticized as an icon of a way of life based on the culture of excess, which has demanded the unsustainable use of natural resources of the planet, having, as one of its results, the production of various types of greenhouse gases responsible for global warming. The Pierce oriented semiotic analysis methodology was adopted to study the advertisements of the brands Fiat, Volkswagen, Chevrolet (GM) and Toyota ran in Veja magazine from June 2008 to June 2011. To expand the range of observation, semiotic methodology was articulated with the knowledge gained through extensive reading of scientific content on the contemporary world, consumption, advertising and sustainability. The procedure allowed a deeper insertion on the content of the advertisements of the selected brands, thus revealing the expressions of signs and the potential effects of meaning more consistently casted. The research results point to a scenario in formation, where brands strive to project meanings related to respect for the environment in a restricted translation of the concept of sustainability. As a result, the advertising of the selected brands presented itself hostage of repeated approaches, circumscribed within a narrow discursive range, on the attempt to meet both the pressure to engage in the fight to preserve the planet and the wish to preserve their business models. The observations of the study suggest, in addition, important thoughts on the uptake of environmental sustainability that can be extrapolated to other dimensions of contemporary life.

Comparing health consequences of P-hydroxybenzoic acid esters (parabens) and other preservatives in the environment

Reader, Elizabeth 08 April 2016 (has links)
Parabens have been used as antimicrobial preservatives in multiple different types of products for decades, however relatively recent studies have caused concern as to whether their wide-use could be potentially harmful. The following paper reviews the extensive areas of human exposure, from mother to fetus, infants via breast milk, baby and child care products through adult personal care products, and other environmental sources. The potential impacts on human health are also discussed. Parabens predominantly impact biological systems as an endocrine disruptor not only by binding to the human Estrogen Receptor directly, but increasing the availability of naturally occurring 17β-estradiol, further potentiating the effect. Alternative antimicrobial preservatives are also discussed, along with their efficacies and potential health concerns. Common alternatives found in personal care products include phenoxyethanol, methylisothiazolinone, and formaldehyde releasers. Additionally, weak organic acids and plant-derived essential oils are also used in personal care products, but tend to be added more so to food products to prevent the growth of spoilage bacteria, fungi and mold. The potential for these alternatives to replace the use of parabens in personal care products, our greatest area of exposure, is very promising. If parabens in personal care products were replaced with a safe and effective alternative, then the other areas of environmental exposure would likely be negligible to produce any harm on society. Future investigation into the nuances of the various plant-derived essential oils and effective formulations for preservation, is likely the most promising solution, due to their mostly harmless nature. Lastly, the discussion of proposed future research in order to lead to a more definitive connection between paraben exposure and adverse health effects is presented.

Statistical modelling of biomarkers incorporating non-proportional effects for survival data : with illustration by application to two residual risk models for predicting risk in early breast cancer

Stephen, Jacqueline January 2016 (has links)
Personalised medicine is replacing the one-drug-fits-all approach with many prognostic models incorporating biomarkers available for risk stratifying patients. Evidence has been emerging that the effects of biomarkers change over time and therefore violate the assumption of proportional hazards when performing Cox regression. Analysis using the Cox model when the assumptions are invalid can result in misleading conclusions. This thesis reviews existing approaches for the analysis of non-proportional effects with respect to survival data. A number of well-developed approaches were identified but to date their uptake in practice has been limited. There is a need for more widespread use of flexible modelling to move away from standard analysis using a Cox model when the assumption of proportional hazards is violated. Two novel approaches were applied to investigate the impact of follow-up duration on two residual risk models, IHC4 and Mammostrat, for predicting risk in early breast cancers using two studies with different lengths of follow up; the Edinburgh Breast Conservation Series (BCS) and the Tamoxifen versus Exemestane Adjuvant Multinational (TEAM) trial. Similar results were observed between the two approaches that were considered, the multivariable fractional polynomial time (MFPT) approach and Royston-Parmer flexible parametric models, with their respective advantages and disadvantages being discussed. The analyses identified a strong time-varying effect of IHC4 score with the prognostic effect of IHC4 score on time-to distant recurrence decreasing with increasing follow-up time. Mammostrat score identified a group of patients with an increased risk of distant recurrence over full follow-up in the TEAM and Edinburgh BCS cohorts. The results suggest a combined IHC4 and Mammostrat risk score could provide information on the risk of recurrence and warrants further study.

Investigation of Secondary Coordination Sphere Effects for Cyanohydrin Hydration with Transition Metal Catalysts

Knapp, Spring Melody, Knapp, Spring Melody January 2012 (has links)
The synthesis of high value acrylic monomers is currently done industrially via cyanohydrin hydration using concentrated acids, resulting in large quantities of useless byproducts. This current process is energy intensive and lacks atom economy; therefore, alternative cyanohydrin hydration strategies are under investigation. Ideally, cyanohydrin hydration would be done using organometallic nitrile hydration catalysts. Cyanohydrin hydration with these catalysts is challenging, because it needs to be done at low temperatures and under acidic conditions to reduce cyanohydrin degradation and catalyst poisoning with cyanide. Efeitos sistêmicos de antiinflamatórios esteroidais tópicos: modulação da inflamação aguda e avaliação de parâmetros hematológicos, imunológicos e endócrinos / Systems effects of topic esteroidals anti-inflammatory drugs: modulation of acute inflammation and evaluation of haematologics, immunologicals and endocrinologicals

Mattos, Maria Izabel da Silva 26 February 2010 (has links)
Glucocorticoids are commonly employed in veterinary practice because they are potent inhibitors of the inflammatory response. They are present in many topical formulations, alone or combined with other active compounds, particularly in otic ointments. Even when applied topically, certain degree of absortion is known to occur. Following the availability of novel, more potent synthetic steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, cases of iatrogenic hyperadrenocorticism have been suggested. Aiming on testing the hypothesis that glucocorticoid-containing otic ointments may lead to systemic effects, we employed three different synthetic glucocorticoids widely used for the treatment of otitis in small animals (hydrocortisone, betamethasone, and triamcinolone) our study Rats were treated topically on their ears, every 12 hours, for 7, 14, or 21 days with the drugs described above. We first employed carrageenan-induced paw edema in order to evaluate the presence of effective levels of circulating anti-inflammatory drugs. We also evaluated several parameters such as change in body weight, relative weight of spleen and adrenal glands, complete hemogram, proliferation index of lymphocytes, and phagocytosis and oxidative burst performed by circulating neutrophils. Moreover, we assessed the plasmatic levels of corticosterone in rats treated topically with anti-inflammatory steroids. Topical treatment led to a reduction on the volume of the inflammatory edema induced by carrageenan, more evident following triamcinolone. Altogether, rats treated with these molecules ceased to gain, or lost weight on the course of the experiment. In some cases, such reduction was accompanied by a decrease on the relative weight of the spleen and adrenal glands, particularly after betamethasone. The most commonly observed change in the hemogram was leucopenia, evident following triamcinolone. We found reduced levels of circulating corticosterone, more persistent after betamethasone. Topically applied glucocorticoids caused a discrete reduction in the intensity and percentage of phagocytosis by circulating neutrophils, and a reduction on the oxidative burst performed by these cells. This study shows that topical steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, so commonly employed in veterinary practice, can be absorbed, depending on the molecule and duration of treatment, leading to systemic effects, which are already relevant after 7 days. Based on our findings, we suggest caution and a close follow-up by a qualified veterinarian whenever a long-term therapy based on these molecules and route of administration is required.

A propaganda contraintuitiva e seus efeitos em crenças e estereótipos / Counterintuitive advertising and its effects on beliefs and stereotypes.

Leite, Francisco Vanildo 01 October 2009 (has links)
The effect of the counterintuitive sense of advertising discourse aims to prompt a process of cognitive shift of the contents that form the traditional stereotypes, in an individual\'s memory, when it introduces \"other/new\" symbolic connections for sociocultural realities experienced by members of minority groups. Therefore, during the process of the advertising message, association fields may be activated in the memory and, depending on the context in which this communication is viewed, it can be negatively or positively decoded/perceived, among other possibilities. A number of studies and experiments are being carried out globally, using different forms of communication, to observe and measure the efficiency of strategic actions that aid in the deconstruction (elimination or suppression) of the negative social stereotypes, through stimuli that activate the mental control of individual\'s stereotyped answers. However, in this process, some results have been identified by the researchers as ironic and undesired effects, among these, a rebound ironic effect is evident. Therefore, the general objectives of this work are to conceptualize and insert the studies on counterintuitive advertising in the theoretical debates of advertising effects; and theoretically includes the communication area on the contemporary studies of the stereotypes and, within the advancement of this field, collaborate to understand the responsible role of using stereotypes in advertising. The methodological procedure includes a bibliographical appraise that supports the discussion about the reflection and fundamentals on the effects of communication, stereotypes and advertising. A laboratory experiment was carried out in the attempt to present, observe and verify some indicatives of the counterintuitive effects on beliefs and stereotypes.

Esterilização não-cirúrgica: estudo do perfil reprodutivo e dos efeitos colaterais de mulheres que recorreram a este método / Non-surgical sterilization: a study of the reproductive profile and side effects of women who used this method

Alegria, Fanny Viviana Lopez 06 December 1991 (has links)
This paper consists of an evaluation on the use of quinacrine as a non-surgical irreversible method for female sterilization. The study group is made up of ten women, seen at the Sotero del Rio Hospital outpatient clinic in Santiago, Chile, from april to september 1990. This study reveals that the women\'s reproductive life began on average at the age of 12.1 years and approximately four years later they began their sexual activity without the use of contraceptive methods. Consequently their first pregnancy occurred at the age of 19.1 years, during late adolescent years. Two years after pregnancy many of these women began to use contraceptive methods (at the age of 21, on average). As a result their obstetric history shows a non well succeeded and varied response to anticonceptional methods. The decision to close reprodutive life taking permanent steps was made by the couples based on information furnished by health professionals. The reasons given were related to family planning, anticonceptional and negative obstetric history. On implementing their decision, the group averaged 34.8 years and averaged 3.2 a lived children per subject. A total of 40 per cent of these women could still use other modern reversible methods before being submited to this permanent one. The follow-up of this non-surgical procedure shows that side effects such as higher levels of quinacrine in the blood and urine ocurred in the first 48 hours after the first and second intrauterine insertion of quinacrine pellets.
