The Eight Views: from its origin in the Xiao and Xiang Rivers to Hiroshige.

Baker, Jennifer Helen January 2010 (has links)
This thesis focuses upon the artistic and poetic subject of the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang, from its origin in the Xiao-Xiang region in the Hunan province of China throughout its dispersal in East Asian countries such as Korea and Japan. Certain aesthetics and iconography were retained from the early examples, throughout the Eight Views’ transformation from the eleventh to the nineteenth century. The subject‟s close associations with poetry, atmospheric phenomena and the context of exile were reflected in the imagery of the painting and the accompanying verses. This thesis will discuss the historic, geographic and poetic origins of the Eight Views, along with a thorough investigation into the artistic styles which various East Asian artists employed in their own interpretations of the series. Furthermore, the dispersal and diaspora of the subject throughout East Asia are also investigated in this thesis. The work of Japanese artist Ando Hiroshige will serve as the concluding apogee. The Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang is an important East Asian artistic subject in both poetry and painting and contains many pervasive East Asian aesthetics.

Kilcullen i Nordirland / Kilcullen in North Ireland

Dingertz, Patrik January 2011 (has links)
The uprisings in the Arab world and Western Europe have had different approaches and different outcomes. The purpose of this essay is to show that David Kilcullens theory of counterinsurgency is irrespective of the conflicts natural or geographical location. The essay intends to illustrate this thesis by examining the theory against another conflict then, the conflict in East Timor and in Iraq, out of which Kilcullen has drawn his experiences and conclusions. My hope is that there is no difference and that the theory is therefore fully applicable and therefore can be used in a wider perspective. The question the essay seeks to answer is how far David Kilcullen regarding counter-insurgency theory is applicable to an intra-European, intra-state conflict like Northern Ireland. The essay intends to use a theory challenging approach with a comparative, most similar system de-sign. This means that it assumes a pre-specified value on the dependent variable and works its way backwards, so to speak, by theory. The theory is highly applicable to and in accordance with the essay analysis demonstrated that it has strength. Thanks to the detection of when the conduct of counterinsurgency units is in line with the theory the outcome becomes more favourable. This also applies to a, for which the theory was not developed, different geographical area. When efforts have been successful, it has been a higher frequency of desirable behaviours as described in Kil-cullens theory. Where efforts have been less successful, or even direct failures, it can be observed that the frequency of the desired behaviours have been much lower and in many cases even the direct opposites of the desired. Regardless of the geographic area the theory is applicable.

Voluntary turnover among technical consultants. Mediating role of social identities and perceived promises

Skachkova, Katsiaryna January 2012 (has links)
Background: Development of technologies and high pace of changes made a modern organization highly dependent on the expertise and assistance of technology specialists. To be able to compete and be cost efficient, but at the same time be on the cutting-edge of technology development, is an essential requirement for doing business in the contemporary world. Moreover, this requirement became a solid ground for the emergence of a technical consulting industry and a new type of human resources - technical consultants. On the one hand, technical consultants are the main resources of technical consulting organizations, but on the other hand, technical consultants can cause harm to technical consulting organization, particularly, in the case of voluntary turnover. Aim: Through the qualitative analysis of the four technical consultants’ voluntary turnover stories in Sweden and based on the literature review, this master thesis opens up the door to the world of technical consultants. The aim of this work is to seek new insights into the problem of voluntary turnover in a new context of technical consultants and discover what role multiple identities and perceived promises play in voluntary turnover decision. Results: Technical consultants are a type of knowledge workers with non-traditional work arrangements. Empirical evidence demonstrates that technical consultants’ decision to quit can be described using "Eight motivational forces", but the framework should be extended, due to developing multiple identities and receiving perceived promises from multiple sources.

Rematerializing the art object : Eleanor Antin’s Carving : A Traditional Sculpture in context with The Eight Temptations / Eleanor Antin's Carving : A Traditional Sculpture in context with The Eight Temptations

Bradley, Taylor 13 June 2012 (has links)
Rematerializing the Art Object examines Eleanor Antin's The Eight Temptations and Carving: A Traditional Sculpture. Temptations re-presents Antin's diet for Carving in a formal language of camp, mocking the dominant avant-garde culture and inspiring a less idea-based interpretation. Section one contextualizes Carving's formal qualities within a broader aesthetic history of photography and sculpture. Section two focuses on how Antin creates an amalgam of Renaissance and Baroque imagery in Temptations. Section three argues that Antin constructs a camp adaptation of the diet reducing the impact of an overly emotional woman and the seriousness of conceptualism to a cliché. Throughout, the thesis centers on the formal and aesthetic manifestations of Antin's humor. A performance within a performance, Temptations's parodic art history denounces pragmatic photography and empowers Antin as an artist and as a woman. / text

Medtner's Acht Stimmungsbilder, Op. 1: A Pedagogical Guide with Analysis

Koh, Min Yu 01 December 2011 (has links)
Rachmaninov regarded Nikolai Medtner as the greatest composer he had ever known, yet Medtner's music is often neglected in the standard repertoire. Lack of public awareness, as well as the technical and musical difficulties in these works, both contribute to their inaccessibility. Unlike Rachmaninov's music, Medtner's music possesses none of the romance and sentimentality, thus lacking in immediate appeal. However, with repeated listening, it gradually reveals its beauty and brilliance. This document examines Medtner's Acht Stimmungsbilder, Op. 1, from a pedagogical viewpoint. Chapter One provides a short biographical background. Chapter Two discusses Medtner's musical style and his publication, The Muse and the Fashion. Chapter Three is devoted to a pedagogical analysis of the work. The last chapter concludes the paper with a suggested order of study. This set of work is technically challenging and is selected with the advanced-level or college student in mind. These students would have had experience performing 19th Century works and is looking to expand their repertoire. This pedagogical guide is written for the reference of the teacher, however, the student may find this useful to them as well.

The Effect of Notetaking and Review Among Eighth-Grade Students

Risch, Nancy Lindbergy 01 May 1989 (has links)
A study was conducted in which both notetaking and review were systematically varied in order to examine viii eighth-grade student's notetaking and performance behaviors. Three formats of notes (Matrix, skeletal, conventional) were examined in combination with three notetaking strategies (take notes/review own notes, take notes/review expert notes, listen/review expert notes) to form nine conditions. Subjects viewed a videotaped lecture, reviewed their respective set of notes, and were administered the following performance tests: structured recall, factual recognition, application, and synthesis. The number of ideas, number of words, and an efficiency calculation was obtained for each notetaking protocol. Results indicated that subjects reviewing a matrix format outperformed those reviewing a skeletal outline format on the application test, a higher-order measure. Subjects recorded an average of less than 30% of the total lecture ideas, and females recorded significantly more words and ideas than did males. Females also outperformed males on tests of structured recall and factual recognition. Speculation was that females' more complete product of notes contributed to their higher performance on the factual-ordered tests. Their performance was not significantly different from males' on the higher-ordered tests.
