Towards quantum optics experiments with single flying electrons in a solid state system / L'expériences d'optique quantique avec un unique électron volant dans la matière condenséeBautze, Tobias 19 December 2014 (has links)
This thesis contains the fundamental study of nano-electronic systems at cryogenictemperatures. We made use of ballistic electrons in a two-dimensional electron gasin a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure to form a real two-path electronic interferometerand showed how the phase of the electrons and hence their quantum state can becontrolled by means of electrostatic gates. The device represents a promising candidateof a flying qubit. We developed a sophisticated numerical tight-binding model based onballistic quantum transport, which reproduces all experimental findings and allows togain profound knowledge about the subtle experimental features of this particular device. We proposed further measurements with this flying qubit system. With the ultimate goalof building a single electron flying qubit, we combined the single electron source that hasbeen developed in our lab prior to this manuscript with an electronic beam splitter. Theelectrons are injected from static quantum dots into a train of moving quantum dots. This moving potential landscape is induced in the piezoelectric substrate of GaAs bysurface acoustic waves from interdigial transducers. We studied and optimized all keycomponents, which are necessary to build a single electron beam splitter and built up areliable local fabrication process. The device is capable of studying electron interactionson the single electron level and can serve as a measurement platform for quantum opticsexperiments in electronic solid state systems. Finally, we developed a powerful toolcapable of calculating the potential landscapes of any surface gate geometry, which canbe used as a fast feedback optimization tool for device design and proposed an optimizedprototype for the single electron beam splitter.

Efeito da composição do material particulado fino, PM2,5 e residual oil fly ash (ROFA), como determinante do potencial mutagênico e tóxico celular: um estudo em bioensaios vegetais e animais / The role of fine particulate matter composition of PM2,5 and ROFA in the cell mutagenic potential and toxicity: a vegetable and animal bioassay studyRegiani Carvalho de Oliveira 02 October 2006 (has links)
The association between atmospheric particulate matter (PM) and adverse human health effects have been consistently reported in epidemiological and experimental studies however, the ability to define the most important components involved in PM toxicity is hindered by its complex composition. In the present study we decided to further explore the effects of different atmospheric particles due to both source and composition, on the biologic system through 3 experiments. The mutagenicity and toxicity of urban PM2,5 of Sao Paulo, Brazil, from a bus strike day was evaluated by the TRAD-MN assay and inhibition of mitotic rate test of root tips Allium cepa. The frog palate was used to evaluate functional parameters (mucociliary transport ? MCT, ciliary beating frequency - CBF and potential difference ? PD) and morphometric data (epithelium tikness and mucus production) of the mucocliary apparatus exposed to ROFA from an a still plant, and to urban PM2,5. The comparative analysis of PM2,5 composition made by neutrons activation, fluorescence X-ray and gas cromatography/mass spectrometry showed decrease of trace elements, sulfur concentration (44,17%) and organics compounds (39,3%) in relation to the non strike day and was associated to coherent reduction in DNA damage. ROFA induced functional injury of the mucociliary apparatus (decrease of MCT and icrease of CBF) and the presence of antioxidants n-Propyl gallate and E vitamin protected against the mucociliary impairment induced by ROFA exposure. The comparative analysis between ROFA and PM2,5 composition showed that ROFA exhibited predominance of iron while PM2,5 showed heterogeneous composition presenting predominance of sulfur (37,594%±17,930%), iron (14,490%±6,489%) and silicon (13,142%±8,516%) and decrement of nickel (0,0336%±0,312%) and vanadium (0,260%±0,006%). We concluded that PM plays an important role in respiratory injury through oxidative stress and that adverse effects of PM on the biologic systems are strongly dependent on its composition.

Análises de propriedades eletrostáticas e estruturais de complexos de proteínas para o desenvolvimento de preditores de complexação em larga escala / Analysis of electrostatic and structural properties of protein complexes to the development of complexation predictors in high-throughput computingTulio Marcus Ribeiro Calixto 20 October 2010 (has links)
Theoretical studies of the molecular mechanisms responsible for the formation and stability of molecular complexes are gaining relevance for the practical possibilities that they offer, for example, in the understanding of diverse diseases and rational drug design. In this project, our emphasis is on the study of protein complexes, extracted from protein data bank (PDB). We have developed computational tools which allow to perform analyses in two directions: 1) to make basic complexation forecasts, through the use of electrostatics properties of proteins, in different conditions and predictive levels, and 2) to carry out a set of statistical analyses, as contacts frequency, in order to build up predictor of protein complexes and to identify patters of interactions between the amino acids as a function of their separation distance. Based on the results obtained on both studies, we aim quantify the physical forces involved in the formation of protein complexes. The focus of the project, in the long run, is to foresee the phenomenon of the protein complexes through the fusing of these two study lines: a coarse-grained predictor of protein complexes and analysis of the statistical potentials between the amino acids that form the complex. The present project is concluded with the construction of web services where we make available the results obtained on our works. This server also has the possibility to be used by any computer user, that wishes to perform search on protein and/or protein group properties

Several types of mechanical devices (vibratory trays, rotating drums, fluidized beds) make use of the triboelectric effect for electrically charge the constituents of insulating materials granular mixtures, in view of their separation in a high-intensity electric field. The non-uniformity of granule charge at the exit of these devices adversely affects the separation efficiency, justifying the researches aimed at the development of novel electrostatic processes, mainly for applications in the field of waste recycling. Simultaneous usage of the triboelectric effect, the Coulomb force and the electric image force is an innovative technical solution according to which four fluidized bed devices were built or improved within the framework of this thesis. The performances of these devices could be evaluated by setting up complex measurement systems that enable the continuous and simultaneous recording of the charges and masses of the separated products. Thus, the experimental design methodology could be used for modeling the separation process and identify the optimum values of the control variables of each device, such as the high voltage level of the speed of the fluidization air. The results obtained on laboratory devices as well on an semi-industrial pilot installation recommend this class of tribo-aero-electrostatic separation processes as the solution of choice for the selective sorting of plastics from waste electric and electronic equipment.

As part of this thesis, volume and surface pulsed Dielectric Barrier Discharges (DBD) were investigated experimentally for applications in the electrostatic precipitation of submicron particles and surface regeneration, respectively. First, the characterization of pulsed DBDs consisted of performing electrical measurements (current, power) and optical measurements (ICCD imaging) in order to observe the influence of electrical and geometrical parameters as well as materials on the properties of the discharge. It is demonstrated that for both types of DBD (surface and volume), the current has two peaks during the rising and falling times of the voltage pulse, corresponding to distinct streamer and glow discharge regimes, respectively.Next, the collection efficiency of electrostatic precipitation (ESP) was determined by granulometric measurements. The results show that the efficiency is influenced by the electrical and geometrical parameters of the precipitator. A characterization of EFD phenomena was performed inside the precipitator by optical metrology (LDV and PIV) to understand the mechanisms of charge and particle drift. Finally, surface regeneration was investigated by analyzing images of the contaminated surface, before and after treatment. The results reveal that the regeneration process is influenced by electrical and geometrical parameters and DBD reactor materials. The mechanisms of regeneration were analyzed in-situ by measuring changes in the size and concentration of the generated particles during the process of regeneration.

Study Of Relaxor Ferroelectric PMN-PT Thin Films For Energy Harvesting ApplicationsSaranya, D 07 1900 (has links) (PDF)
The present research work mainly focuses on the fabrication of 0.85PMN-0.15PT thin film relaxor ferroelectrics for energy harvesting applications.
Chapter 1 gives a brief review about why energy harvesting is required and the different ways it can be scavenged. An introduction to relaxor ferroelectrics and their characteristics structural features are discussed. A brief introduction is given about charge storage, electrocaloric effect , DC-EFM and integration over Si substrate is discussed. Finally, the specific objectives of the current research are outlined.
Chapter 2 deals with the various experimental studies carried out in this research work. It gives the details of the experimental set up and the basic operation principles of various structural and physical characterizations of the materials prepared. A brief explanation of material fabrication, Microstructural and physical property measurements is discussed.
Chapter3 involves the optimization process carried out to contain a phase pure PMN-PT structure without any pyrochlore phase. The optimization process is an important step in the fabrication of a thin film as the quality of any device is determined by their structural and Microstructural features. XRD, SEM, AFM were used to characterize the observed phase formation in these films. The optimizing domain images of polycrystalline 0.85PMN-0.15PT thin films on La0.5Sr0.5CoO3/ (111) Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates deposited at different oxygen partial pressures are presented. The oxygen pressure has a drastic influence on the film growth and grain morphology which are revealed through XRD and SEM characterization techniques. The presence of oxygen vacancies have found to influence the distribution of polar nanoregions and their dynamics which are visualized using domain images acquired by DC-EFM
In Chapter 7 the piezoelectric response of 0.85PMN-0.15PT thin films are studied due to the electric field induced bias. From this the d33 value is calculated. d33 value is an important parameter which determines whether a material is suitable for device application (PZT). But, for a device fabrication it is important to integrate them with Si wafer which is not a straightforward work .Hence, buffer layers are used to obtain a pure perovskite PMN-PT film. We have deposited 0.85PMN-0.15PT thin films of 500 nm on a SOI wafer and tried to investigate their piezoelectric application.
Chapter 8 summarizes the present study and discusses about the future work that could give more insight into the understanding of the0.85PMN-0.15 PT relaxor ferroelectric thin film.

Adaptivní evoluce Toll-like receptorů u ptáků / Adaptive evolution of Toll-like receptors in birdsVelová, Hana January 2020 (has links)
Adaptive evolution of Toll-like receptors in birds Hana Velová, PhD thesis 6 Abstract Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are one of the key and presumably also evolutionary most original components of animal immune system. As Pattern recognition receptors they form the first line of innate immune defence against various pathogens. The proper receptor binding of pathogenic ligands is crucial for their correct recognition and for subsequent triggering of an appropriate immune response. Because there exists a direct interaction between the receptor surface and the pathogenic ligand, host-pathogen coevolution on molecular level can be predicted. Thus, through variability of their ligands, TLRs are exposed to extensive selective pressures that may be detected on both genetic and protein levels. Surprisingly, the variability we revealed in birds is even higher than previously expected based on the reports from other vertebrates, mainly mammals. In my doctoral thesis I summarise the results of my contribution to the avian TLR research. We were the first who experimentally verify the absence of functional TLR5 in several avian species and duplication of TLR7 in others. We finally resolved the origin of duplication in TLR1 and in TLR2 family. An important part of my research project focused on the prediction of potentially...

Evaluation of distribution coefficients (KOC and Kd) for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substancesNordanstorm, Nika January 2021 (has links)
The dominating factors affecting sorption of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remain subject of research and debate. Traditionally, distribution coefficients (e.g., Kd and KOC) are used to calculate the fractionation of the contaminant between soil and water, to estimate leaching and subsequently the risks it imposes reaching water reservoirs. Research has aimed to establish the sorption mechanisms for PFAS but, due to the complexity of interactions between the substance specific physiochemical properties and geochemical sorbent characteristics, it has shown to be a complicated task. For PFOS, one of the most commonly encountered PFAS, the Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI) recommends using the 10th percentile of a small data set for the organic carbon-water distribution coefficient KOC (500 L/kg) and multiply this with the organic content of the in-situ soil to obtain the soil-water distribution coefficient (Kd). The result of this study shows that this method is insufficient to obtain a good approximation of the mobility of PFOS at a contaminated site. With a review of recent research on PFAS sorption and a case study performed at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, this study concludes that as of today, and due to PFAS potent mobility, well measured field coefficients for each soil type present in the soil profile and an elaborate geohydrological model is necessary to estimate PFAS environmental transport, fate and associated risks. It also concludes that parameters such as anionic exchange capacity and soil protein content may be highly relevant to estimate PFAS sorption.

Studium asociačního chování amphifilních kopolymerů v roztocích obsahujících nízkomolekulární látky pomocí počítačových simulací. / The study of the association behavior of the amphiphilic copolymers in solutions containing low molar compounds by means of computer simulations.Šindelka, Karel January 2018 (has links)
Title: The study of the association behaviour of the amphiphilic copolymers in solutions containing low molar compounds by means of computer simulations. Author: Mgr. Karel Šindelka Department: Faculty of Science, Charles University Supervisor: Doc. Ing. Zuzana Limpouchová, Csc. Abstract This doctoral thesis focuses on the study of electrostatic self- and co-assembly in complex polymer solutions containing polyelectrolyte (PE) block copolymers together with surfactants, neutral homopolymers, or oppositely charged PEs using the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD). It was shown that the electro- static self-assembly depends not only on the cooperative interactions of oppo- sitely charged PE chains, but also on the amphiphilicity of PE species or on the polymer block compatibility, among other properties. PEs with incompatible blocks create well-defined core-shell structures, while large ill-defined crew-cut aggregates form from PEs with compatible blocks In non-stoichiometric mixtures of PEs with incompatible blocks, co-assembled nanoparticles are smaller than in stoichiometric mixtures and are charged. The destabilization of larger aggregates depends on how the PE charge surplus is introduced: the effect is strongest when the density of the surplus PE charge on the PE chains is increased and weakest when the...
