Detection of crack-like indications in digital radiography by global optimisation of a probabilistic estimation function

Alekseychuk, Oleksandr 10 May 2006 (has links)
A new algorithm for detection of longitudinal crack-like indications in radiographic images is developed in this work. Conventional local detection techniques give unsatisfactory results for this task due to the low signal to noise ratio (SNR ~ 1) of crack-like indications in radiographic images. The usage of global features of crack-like indications provides the necessary noise resistance, but this is connected with prohibitive computational complexities of detection and difficulties in a formal description of the indication shape. Conventionally, the excessive computational complexity of the solution is reduced by usage of heuristics. The heuristics to be used, are selected on a trial and error basis, are problem dependent and do not guarantee the optimal solution. Not following this way is a distinctive feature of the algorithm developed here. Instead, a global characteristic of crack-like indication (the estimation function) is used, whose maximum in the space of all possible positions, lengths and shapes can be found exactly, i.e. without any heuristics. The proposed estimation function is defined as a sum of a posteriori information gains about hypothesis of indication presence in each point along the whole hypothetical indication. The gain in the information about hypothesis of indication presence results from the analysis of the underlying image in the local area. Such an estimation function is theoretically justified and exhibits a desirable behaviour on changing signals. The developed algorithm is implemented in the C++ programming language and testet on synthetic as well as on real images. It delivers good results (high correct detection rate by given false alarm rate) which are comparable to the performance of trained human inspectors.

On the physical drivers of transport processes in Lake Garda: A combined analytical, numerical and observational investigation.

Amadori, Marina 07 May 2020 (has links)
This doctoral thesis provides the first comprehensive study on the physical processes controlling hydrodynamics and transport in Lake Garda. The investigation is carried out in parallel on three different levels: data collection and analysis, three-dimensional numerical modeling and theoretical study. On the first level, data are collected by building up a network of research institutes and local administrations in the lake area. New data are acquired through traditional field campaigns (CTD, thermistor chains, satellite imagery), while a citizen-science approach, based on local knowledge harvesting, is successfully tested to gather qualitative data on surface circulation. On the second level, a three-dimensional modeling chain is set up, by coupling one-way a mesoscale atmospheric model to a hydrodynamic model. Both models are validated on multiple temporal and spatial scales, allowing to identify the main interactions between the weather forcing and the hydrodynamic response of the lake. Circulations in Lake Garda are found to be very sensitive to the thermal stratification, to the spatial distribution of the wind forcing and to the Earth’s rotation. Surface cyclonic gyre patterns develop in the lake as a residual outcome of alternating wind forcing of local breezes and differential acceleration induced by Earth’s rotation, whereas unidirectional currents flow under a nearly uniform and constant wind. Both model and observations evidences show that, under weak thermal stratification, Ekman transport activates a secondary circulations in the northern part of the lake, driving surface water to the deep layers and possibly preconditioning the lake for subsequent buoyancy-driven deep mixing events. On the third level, the relevance of the Coriolis term in the equations of motion for relatively narrow closed basins is analytically addressed. The classical Ekman problem is solved by including the presence of lateral boundaries and a new analytical solution is formulated. The validity of the new solution is proved by numerical tests of idealized domains of different size, geographical location and turbulent regime, and on Lake Garda as a real test case. The meaningful length scales are discussed, and the significance of Rossby radious as a reference horizontal scale is disproved for steady-state circulations driven by wind and planetary rotation.

Évaluation des processus hydro-sédimentaires d’une retenue de forme allongée : application à la retenue de Génissiat sur le Haut-Rhône / Evaluation of the hydro-sedimentary processes of an elongated dam reservoir : application to the Génissiat reservoir located on the Upper Rhône River

Guertault, Lucie 09 October 2015 (has links)
This PhD thesis aimed to characterize the main processes responsible for the morphological evolution of an elongated reservoir, characterized by predominant longitudinal dimensions. It was based on the case study of the Genissiat reservoir, located in a series of hydropower plants on the French Upper Rhone River and regularly subjected to flushing operations. A fluvial geomorphological analysis based on morphological evolutions and hydraulic conditions was performed. A longitudinal delineation of the reservoir allowed to highlight the spatial dynamics of the reservoir. Sediment fluxes in the reservoir and their uncertainties were quantified and qualified and evidenced the contribution of transport processes associated to sand and fine sediments. Two one-dimensional numerical models were developed to simulate the main processes for fine sediment and coarse sediment transport, respectively. Numerical results showed that these models were able to reproduce morphological evolutions and sediment fluxes, with differences between simulated and measured values lower than the measurement uncertainties. It appeared that the upstream part of the reservoir is dominated by sand transport while the downstream part of the reservoir is dominant by silt and clay sediment transport. Finally, the models were used to simulate predictive scenarios and to evaluate the impact of the operating rules on sediment dynamics. Some enhancements to current operating rules were proposed to limit reservoir sedimentation and downstream ecological impacts related to flushing events and long-term management

Poisson hyperplane tessellation: Asymptotic probabilities of the zero and typical cells

Bonnet, Gilles 17 February 2017 (has links)
We consider the distribution of the zero and typical cells of a (homogeneous) Poisson hyperplane tessellation. We give a direct proof adapted to our setting of the well known Complementary Theorem. We provide sharp bounds for the tail distribution of the number of facets. We also improve existing bounds for the tail distribution of size measurements of the cells, such as the volume or the mean width. We improve known results about the generalised D.G. Kendall's problem, which asks about the shape of large cells. We also show that cells with many facets cannot be close to a lower dimensional convex body. We tacle the much less study problem of the number of facets and the shape of small cells. In order to obtain the results above we also develop some purely geometric tools, in particular we give new results concerning the polytopal approximation of an elongated convex body.

Organization of Glucan Chains in Starch Granules as Revealed by Hydrothermal Treatment

Vamadevan, Varatharajan 07 June 2013 (has links)
Regular starches contain two principal types of glucan polymers: amylopectin and amylose. The structure of amylopectin is characterized according to the unit chain length profile and the nature of the branching pattern, which determine the alignment of glucan chains during biosynthesis. The organization of glucan chains in amylopectin and their impact on the structure of starch are still open to debate. The location of amylose and its exact contribution to the assembly of crystalline lamellae in regular and high-amylose starch granules also remain unknown. The primary focus of this thesis is the organization and flexibility of glucan chains in crystalline lamellae. The organization and flexibility of glucan chains in native, annealed (ANN), and heat-moisture treated (HMT) normal, waxy, hylon V, hylon VII, and hylon VIII corn starches were examined. This study has shown for the first time that increased amounts of apparent amylose in B-type starches hinder the polymorphic transition (from B to A+B) during HMT. The research has also demonstrated that an iodine-glucan complex transformed the B-type polymorphic pattern of hylon starches into a V-type pattern. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results showed that ANN- and HMT-induced changes were most pronounced in hylon starches. These findings suggest that the glucan tie chains influences the assembly of crystalline lamellae in high-amylose starches. The relationship between the internal unit chain composition of amylopectin, and the thermal properties and annealing of starches from four different structural types of amylopectin was investigated by DSC. The onset gelatinization temperature (To) correlated negatively with the number of building blocks in clusters (NBbl) and positively with the inter-block chain length (IB-CL). The enthalpy of gelatinization (∆H) correlated positively with the external chain length of amylopectin. Annealing results showed that starches with a short IB-CL were most susceptible to ANN, as evidenced by a greater increase in the To and Tm. The increase in enthalpy was greater in starches with long external chains and IB-CLs. These data suggest that the internal organization of glucan chains in amylopectin determines the alignment of chains within the crystalline lamellae and thereby the thermal properties and annealing of the starch granules.
