Empathy: aesthetic and interpersonal

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / It is the hypothesis of this dissertation that interpersonal empathetic ability and aesthetic empathic ability constitute one factor or ability. A secondary purpose of the dissertation is to explore and evaluate all possible methods of measuring empathic ability, and to develop a good pencil and paper test of empathic ability. "Empathy" is understood here as "pathic perception" -- the perception or cognition of feeling emotion. The methodology of the dissertation involves a theoretical review and synthesis, and an experiment. A review of the literature reveals four basic types of empathy theories: (1) self-theories; (2) associationist theories; (3) Gestalt theories; (4) motor theories. Though the theorists representing these four positions argue among themselves as to how the process of empathy operates, almost without exception they agree that it operates in the same manner in the perception of persons as it does in the perception of objects of art. Egoism kontra altruism : Vilka är motivationsfaktorerna till hjälpande?

Forskning inom altruism och egoism är omfattande, båda sidorna hävdar att det finns bevis för deras sak. Syftet med undersökningen var att förstå motivationsfaktorer gällande hjälpande, samt en inblick angående relationer och typen av hjälpande. Deltagarna bestod av 85 studenter, åldrarna 19–50, 65 var kvinnor. Databearbetning var inspirerad av empirisk metodik, varje berättelse meningskoncentrerades. Främlingar var typen av relation som mest blev hjälpt. Vardaglig fysisk hjälp var den vanligaste typen av hjälpande. Egoistiska motiv som låg på 40% visade sig vara mer dominerande än altruistiska motiv som låg på 20%, resterande 40% var neutrala. Andelen av de 40% berodde på att egoistiska motivationsfaktorer förklarades som känsla av skyldighet att hjälpa, känna sig behövd och en känsla av att må bra. Altruistiska motivationsfaktorer förklarades som instinkt och empatiska tankebanor. Studien tyder på att egoistiska och altruistiska motivationsfaktorer existerar, dock krävs mer forskning inom dessa ämnen

Building a Predictor Model of Variables for Students Currently in a Counseling Program and the Impact Those Variables Have on Their Levels of Empathy

The purpose of the study is to investigate a variety of character traits, stressors or traumatic event variables in order to develop a possible predictor model for individuals that seek out to become a student in a counseling program and how those variables relate to their level of empathy. The purpose of using a multiple linear regression analysis is to help determine if a linear relationship exist between the dependent variable and a set of independent variables. The multiple linear regression analyzes the data to determine if the residuals are homoscedastic and approximately rectangular-shaped. A multiple linear regression allows the researcher to assess for the absence of multicollinearity in the model, meaning that the independent variables are not highly correlated. The multiple linear regression analysis determines the single fit for the variables through a scatter plot. More specifically the multiple linear regression fits a line through a multi-dimensional space of data points in order to determine their correlation to each other (O’Brien, 2018).
