Exploring farmers´ motivation for collective action: A Q study on collaboration in Dutch agri-environment schemes

Im Rahmen der Gemeinsamen Agrarpolitik der Europäischen Union wurden Agrarumweltprogramme (AES) entwickelt, um die durch die Landwirtschaft verursachte Zerstörung der natürlichen Umwelt zu bekämpfen. Um die ökologische Wirksamkeit der Systeme zu verbessern, wird ein kollektiver Ansatz empfohlen, der sich auf eine Landschaft statt auf eine einzelne Betriebsebene konzentriert. Dieser Ansatz wird in ganz Europa selten angewendet, außer in den Niederlanden, wo seit 2016 alle AES gemeinsam realisiert werden müssen. Da die Teilnahme an den Programmen freiwillig ist, ist es von entscheidender Bedeutung, die Motivation der Landwirte zu verstehen, sich anzuschließen, da die Annahme und Umsetzung von Maßnahmen eine Voraussetzung für die Erreichung ist irgendwelche Effekte. Ziel dieser Studie ist es daher, die Motivation niederländischer Landwirte zur Teilnahme an kollektiven AES zu untersuchen und die wichtigsten Vor- und Nachteile des Programms herauszufinden, die von den Landwirten wahrgenommen werden. Eine Q-Studie mit 15 Landwirten aus sechs Provinzen zeigt drei vorherrschende Motivationsansichten: eine kollektivorientierte, eine wirtschaftsorientierte und eine umweltorientierte Perspektive. Alle Bauern eint ihre Zuneigung und Sorge für die Natur, die von unterschiedlichem Problembewusstsein und Kollektivzugehörigkeit begleitet wird. Finanzieller Ausgleich wird von allen als wichtig erachtet, jedoch eher als notwendiges Mittel, um notwendige Änderungen in der landwirtschaftlichen Praxis zu ermöglichen, denn als zusätzliche Einnahmequelle. Während die niederländischen Regelungen noch weiter verbessert werden können, um mehr Flexibilität, eine bessere Integration des Wissens der Landwirte und eine bessere Kommunikation zu ermöglichen, weisen alle Landwirte viele Vorbehalte im Zusammenhang mit kollektiven Maßnahmen zurück, was darauf hindeutet, dass der niederländische Ansatz über die nationalen Grenzen hinaus gefördert werden könnte. / Within the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy, agri-environment schemes (AES) have been designed to address the degradation of the natural environment caused by agriculture. To improve the schemes’ ecological effectiveness, a collective approach focusing on a landscape instead of a single farm level is recommended. This approach is rarely applied across Europe except for the Netherlands, where all AES have to be realised collectively since 2016. As participation in the schemes is voluntary, understanding farmers’ motivation to join is crucial since the uptake and implementation of measures is prerequisite for achieving any effects. Hence, the aim of this study is to explore Dutch farmers’ motivation to participate in collective AES and to find out about the scheme’s main advantages and disadvantages perceived by the farmers. A Q study with 15 farmers from six provinces shows three dominant motivational views: a collective-oriented, a business-oriented and an environment-oriented perspective. All farmers unites their affection and care for nature, which is accompanied by different levels of problem awareness and affiliation to the collective. Financial compensation is deemed important by all, yet rather as necessary mean to enable required changes in farming practices than as additional source of revenue. While the Dutch schemes can still be further improved to allow for more flexibility, a better integration of the farmers’ knowledge and enhanced communication, all farmers dismiss many caveats related to collective action, indicating a potential to promote the Dutch approach beyond national borders.

Towards Sustainable Digital Media : An Exploration and Evaluation of Ecodesign Tools

This research addresses the challenge of integrating ecodesign tools into the digital media industry to reduce the environmental footprint of digital products. Despite increasing awareness of sustainability, many digital media experts struggle to adopt these tools practically. This study investigates experts’ perception of the usefulness and ease of use of ecodesign tools and explores influences on their user experience. The research included two phases: a survey and a user study. The survey involved N=93 digital media experts in Europe and evaluated the perceived ease of use and usefulness of ecodesign tools utilizing the Technology Acceptance Model. It revealed the IBM Checklist for Sustainability and the Sustainable Web Design Guidelines as the most useful and easy to use ecodesign tools. These tools were then examined in a one-week user study, involving N=12 digital media experts. This phase included a diary study and user experience questionnaire. Results indicate that practical guidance, clear understanding, efficiency, trustworthiness, motivation, and innovation influence user experience. While sustainability awareness is rising, integrating ecodesign tools into daily workflows remains challenging for some experts. Comprehensive training and guided integration are needed to address these challenges. Ecodesign tools should fit diverse user needs, enhancing relevance and usability across various roles. Incorporating customizable features, clear guidance, interactive learning resources, and alignment with industry standards better support digital media experts and enhance their user experience. This research highlights the importance of ongoing development and refinement of ecodesign tools within the digital media industry.

The thesis deals with the application of green marketing, respectively Green behaviour of retail chains Tesco Stores, Penny Market and Kaufland Czech Republic in the territory of the regional city České Budějovice. The main aim is thus to determine whether these retail chains use green marketing and behaviour to what extent, based on the set of indicators and whether the customers of these chains reflect green marketing and behaviour in their purchasing decisions. The theoretical part is focused on definitions of basic and related concepts such as green marketing, green economy, customer purchasing behaviour and theoretical definitions of selected indicators of green behaviour. The practical part summarizes the information obtained from interviews with representatives of retail chains and analyse customer behaviour through a questionnaire survey. The main finding of the thesis is that although retail chains use green marketing, customer's purchasing decisions is not affected by this type of marketing. Customers prefer a price range and distance to stores from the residence or from the working place. The thesis also found that each chain has its clients, who have the same features of behaviour.

Udržitelný rozvoj cestovního ruchu na Vysočině / Sustainable tourism development of Vysocina Region

The diploma thesis deals with the topic of sustainable tourism development at the regional level. This phenomenon is elaborated on the example of Vysocina Region. To evaluate sustainability of its development, the potential of this touristic destination is researched regarding various areas, including key products. These are subjected to comparisons with recommendations of significant tourism organization for the purpose of assessing the sustainability of tourism. The diploma thesis also includes a comparison with other Czech regions experience as a touristic destination. Vysocina Region has favourable initial conditions for its sustainable development, especially regarding supply of key products, which include both environmentally friendly goods and cultural attractiveness contributing to the personal development of individuals and promoting intercultural tolerance. The main issue appears to be the spatial imbalance of its development in the region, caused mainly by the concentration of tourist activities to certain areas and low local initiative in the less attractive areas. The diploma thesis proposes a number of solutions, such as utilization of geocaching and products of gastroturism, supporting the foundation of local destination management organisations, promoting cycling tourism and the foundation of highly visited tourist destinations.

Arbetet med att minska människans utsläpp av växthusgaser är en fråga som är högaktuell idag. Transportsektorn är den sektor som har näst störst klimatpåverkan inom EU-området. För att minska transportsektorns klimatpåverkan anser EU-kommissionen att en del av det gods som idag går på väg behöver flyttas till tåg eller sjö för att nå EU:s miljömål. Syftet med arbetet var att undersöka skillnaden av växthusgasutsläpp för transport av containrar beroende på transportsätt på sträckan Göteborg till Stockholm. De undersökta transportsätten var lastbil, godståg och containerfartyg. Studien använde en empirisk fallstudie där växthusgasutsläpp beräknades utifrån empiriska bränsleförbruknings data. Fallstudien kompletterades med en intervju från en person med stor erfarenhet av godstransporter på sträckan. Resultatet av undersökningen är att järnvägens miljöverkan är minst, men för tidskänsligt gods är fortfarande vägtransport det effektivaste transportslaget. För att sjöfart ska vara ett miljömässigt alternativ måste anpassningar av fartyg och/eller drift göras. / The work to reduce greenhouse emissions created by humans is a question that is highly relevant today. The transport sector is the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the European Union. To reduce the greenhouse emissions from the transport sector the EU commission has said that some of the freight that currently is being transported by road must move to rail or sea transport in order to reach EU environmental targets. The scope of this study is to compare the greenhouse emissions based on fuel consumption from domestic container transport between Gothenburg and Stockholm. The different modes of transports studied were trucks, freight train and container ship. The study was conducted using an empirical case study to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions using empirical fuel consumption data. The case study was supplemented by an interview with a person with great insight in the transport business. The result from the study shows that from an environmental perspective container transport by rail should be used. Transport by road is still the best means of transport for time sensitive cargo. If transport by sea is to be an environmental option, there has to be adjustments on either ships or management or both.

Development and Investigation of Bio-based Environmentally Friendly Fire Retardant PLA Composites

In der vorliegenden Dissertationsarbeit wird auf die Thematik der Entwicklung von Polymerwerkstoffen, basierend auf vollständig natürlichen Resourcen, eingegangen. Die vorliegende Lösung beruht auf der Compoundierung von Polylactid mit unterschiedlich modifizierten Vanillin. Ziel war es, flammschutzwirkende Komponenten einzubringen und die Abhängigkeiten zwischen Zusammensetzung und Eigenschaften aufzuklären. Dem liegt die Absicht zugrunde, optimale Werkstoffe zur Verfügung zu stellen, die sich durch deutlich verbesserte flammhemmende und mechanische bzw. thermo-mechanische Eigenschaften auszeichnen. Die erzeugten modifizierten Vanillin-Derivate sowie deren Composite wurden hinsichtlich der physikalischen und chemischen Struktur mittels REM, EDX, FTIR, NMR, DSC, TGA, SEC und Zugversuch charakterisiert. Zur Bestimmung der flammwidrigen Eigenschaften wurden UL-94 V, LOI und CCT durchgeführt. Es hat sich gezeigt, dass System aus PLA und einem Vanillin-Phosphorsäure-Ester in Bezug auf werkstofflichen Eigenschaften insgesamt die optimale Leistung aufwies. Die Materialen ergaben eine verbesserte Zähigkeit und erheblich erhöht flammwidrige Eigenschaften. In einem weiteren Schritt wurden MMT und APP, zwei kommerzielle Flammschutzmittel, mit dem PLA/VP System kombiniert. Die daraus abgeleiteten Resultate bewiesen eine synergistische Wirkung zwischen VP und MMT bzw. APP und führten zu besseren Brandklassen bei LOI und UL-94 Brandtests. / The present work demonstrates the development of fully bio-based polymeric composites. It was realized by the compounding of poly(lactic acid) and differently modified vanillin. The aim of this work was to introduce flame retardant components into PLA and to study the flame retardant mechanism. The intention of this approach is the preparation of optimized PLA composites with significantly improved flame retardant, mechanical as well as thermo-mechanical properties. The modified vanillin and the PLA composites based on those vanillin derivatives were characterized by means of SEM, EDX, FTIR, NMR, DSC, TGA, SEC and tensile test for their physical and chemical structures. UL-94 V, LOI and CCT were carried out to determine the corresponding flame retardant properties. The results showed that, the PLA/VP system represented the best overall performance. The PLA/VP composite exhibited increased toughness and significantly improved flame retardancy. In addition, two commercialized flame retardants, MMT and APP, were introduced into the PLA/VP system, respectively. It was suggested that there were synergic effects between VP and MMT as well as APP. The combined used flame retardants resulted in an improved classification in UL-94 and LOI tests.

The building comprises three main spaces ( the townhall, a multi-purpose hall, socio-cultural center), which are all interconnected and are directly and easily accessible to a car park. There is a public space in a form of an open square, which generates a pleasant atmosphere for leisure breaks and social activities. The aim is to protect a green image of a district and create an environmentally friendly building.

The Role of Transport Purchasing Companies in the Reduction of Freight Transport Emissions : The Opportunities and Barriers of Environmentally Friendly Freight Transport / Transportinköpande företags roll i reduceringen av utsläpp från godstransporter

The freight transport industry accounts for a large and, moreover, an increasing share of the global greenhouse gas emissions. Despite this, previous studies point to the fact that freight transport purchasing companies (TPCs) do not take sufficient action to reduce emissions from the freight transports they buy. Previous research has not thoroughly explored the variables that might alter this pattern found in company behavior. This thesis therefore aims to investigate what current opportunities and barriers TPCs experience and what practices these companies are utilizing to reduce freight transport emissions, in order to investigate how companies in general can be motivated to become greener. To fulfill this goal, a multiple case study was performed where qualitative data, collected through interviews, was gathered from 13 companies that are actively working to reduce their climate footprint. A theoretical framework, namely the PESTEL analysis, was furthermore utilized to analyze the macro-environment of the phenomena. The collected data was analyzed in accordance with the research questions, where the main research question concerns the role of TPCs in affecting environmental advancements and the opportunities and barriers TPCs face from a PESTEL perspective. The sub-research questions concern what motivational factors companies experience regarding the implementation of sustainability targets regarding purchased transport, and what practices companies are utilizing to decrease the emissions from purchased transport. The findings of this thesis show that TPCs play a large role in the process of affecting the environmental advancements in freight transport. Furthermore, by using the theoretical framework, fewer opportunities than barriers for affecting emissions from freight transport were identified. In two perspectives, the political and social, several opportunities were found. For instance, within the political perspective it was deduced that incentives such as the Swedish greenhouse gas reduction mandate act as opportunities for TPCs. Moreover, one of the most important barriers discovered in this thesis include the need for long-term policies by Sweden and the EU to enable investments in sustainable fuel types and vehicles. / Industrin för godstransporer står för en stor och framförallt, stigande andel av de globala utsläppen av växthusgaser. Trots detta pekar tidigare studier på att transportinköpande företag inte tar tillräckligt med initiativ för att minska utsläpp från de godstransporter som de köper in. Tidigare forskning har inte tillräckligt utforskat variablerna i företagens beteende, som skulle kunna ändra på detta mönster. Den här avhandlingen syftar till att utreda vilka nuvarande möjligheter och barriärer transportinköpande företag upplever och vilka metoder dessa företag använder för att minska utsläpp från godstransporter, för att utreda hur företag i allmänhet kan motiveras till att bli grönare. För att uppnå detta mål genomfördes en multipel fallstudie där kvantitativ data, insamlad genom intervjuer, samlades in från 13 företag som aktivt jobbar med att minska sitt klimatavtryck. Ett teoretiskt ramverk, PESTEL-analys, användes därtill för att analysera makromiljön av studien. Den insamlade datan analyserades i enlighet med forskningsfrågorna, där den huvudsakliga forskningsfrågan berör transportinköpande företags roll i att påverka miljömässiga framsteg, samt de möjligheter och barriärer företag ställs inför, från ett PESTEL-perspektiv. Delforskningsfrågorna berör vilka motiverande faktorer som företag upplever när det kommer till att implementera hållbarhetsmål rörande inköpta godstransporter, samt vilka metoder företag använder för att minska utsläppen från inköpta godstransporter. Resultatet av denna avhandling visar att transportinköpande företag spelar en betydande roll i processen att påverka de miljömässiga framstegen inom godstransporter. Vidare fann man, genom att använda det teoretiska ramverket, att färre möjligheter än barriärer som påverkar utsläpp från godstransporter kunde identifieras. Inom två perspektiv, det politiska och det sociala, identifierades flera möjligheter. Det kunde exempelvis urskiljas att incitament som den svenska reduktionsplikten verkar som möjligheter för transportinköpande företag. En av de viktigaste barriärerna som identifierades i denna avhandling berör behovet av långsiktiga policys i Sverige och på EU- nivå för att möjliggöra för investeringar i hållbara bränsletyper och fordon.
