Civil War Twin: Exploring Ethical Challenges in Designing an Educational Face Recognition Application

Facial recognition systems pose numerous ethical challenges around privacy, racial and gender bias, and accuracy, yet little guidance is available for designers and developers. We explore solutions to these challenges in a four-phase design process to create Civil War Twin (CWT), an educational web-based application where users can discover their lookalikes from the American Civil War era (1861-65) while learning more about facial recognition and history. Through this design process, we synthesize industry guidelines, consult with scholars of history, gender, and race, evaluate CWT in feedback sessions with diverse prospective users, and conduct a usability study with crowd workers. We iteratively formulate design goals to incorporate transparency, inclusivity, speculative design, and empathy into our application. We found that users' perceived learning about the strengths and limitations of facial recognition and Civil War history improved after using CWT, and that our design successfully met users' ethical standards. We also discuss how our ethical design process can be applied to future facial recognition applications. / Master of Science / Facial recognition systems, such as those used in cities, smartphone application and airports, pose numerous ethical challenges around privacy, racial and gender bias, and accuracy. Little guidance is available for designers and developers to create ethical facial recognition systems. We explore solutions to these ethical challenges of creating facial recognition systems in a four-phase design process to create Civil War Twin (CWT), an educational web-based application where users can discover their lookalikes from the American Civil War era (1861-65) while learning more about facial recognition and history. CWT allows users to upload a selfie, select search preferences (e.g., military service, gender, ethnicity), and use facial recognition to discover their "Civil War twins" (i.e., photographs of people from the American Civil War era who look like them). A critical review of the intersection between design, ethics and technology : the social importance of designers and how ethics can truly be promoted through design

In his speech during the 2016 Speculative Design Symposium, held at the University of California, San Diego, Benjamin Bratton1 rightly argued that the job of 21st century design is to undo (much of) the design of the 20th.A number of recent controversial designs and practices in the business and public sphere have suddenly made ethical design (design ethics2) a hot topic in the design community.This master thesis is a highly critical and fairly philosophical examination of the design profession in the context of the current socio-technical landscape. It analyses the convergence between the fields of design, ethics and disruptive technology. Autonomous transportation is taken as an example to illustrate what circumstances (should) drive designers’ social engagement. Hopefully, it also accommodates for a productive reflection on the place of ethics in a broader social context. By utilising speculative and critical design approaches, the thesis aims to stimulate, provoke and ideally maintain a public discourse on the direction of development of technology and modern societies, and inspire designers to be more critical to the vocational portrayal of their profession. / <p><strong>The degree project is carried out at the Department of Science and Technology (ITN) at Faculty of Science and Engineering, Linköping University</strong></p>

Också, hur kan man genom grafisk design gynna utvecklingen av en eller flera delar av hjärnans kapaciteter? Med grafisk design har jag skapat ett verktyg som hjälper dig att planera dina studier samt hjälper dig att stimulera hjärnan inför studierna. Beteendedesign, metakognition och gamification är de teoretiska grunder arbetet vilar på. Jag vill uppmana dig som läser detta att reflektera kring din egen hjärnkapacitet. Upplever du ofta svårigheter med att fokusera, att sova eller kanske att planera? Det finns många sätt att stimulera hjärnan så att svårigheter kan bli lättare. Det sistnämnda är just det Charlie kan hjälpa dig med, att planera. En app som i nuläget är en prototyp hjälper dig att skapa vanor kringdina studier och utmanar dig att utveckla dina beteenden. Charlie uttryckeroch kombinerar planeringsverktyg och kunskap om hjärnstimulans på ett sätt som inte gjorts förut. Intrycket målgruppen får lämnar ett avtryck där beteendeförändring blir möjlig. Kunskap om och beteenden som främjar hjärnans kapacitet kombineras effektivt med de stunder då en använder stora delar av hjärnan, vilket gynnar förändringen i sig. Testa att utmana dig själv i vad din hjärna är kapabel till. Du sitter inte fast, du kan ändra dina vanor när du vill! / How can you through graphic design encourage schooling of one or multiple parts of the brain’s capacity? Furthermore, how can you through graphic design promote the evolvement of one or multiple parts of the brain’s capacity? With the help of graphic design, I have created a tool that helps you schedule your studies as well as it stimulates your brain pre-studying. Behavioral design, metacognition, and gamification are the theoretical foundations this study relies on. I want to encourage you, the one reading this, to reflect on your own brain capacity. Are you having a hard time focusing, sleeping, or planning things ahead? There are multiple ways to stimulate your brain so these difficulties become easier. The latter is the one Charlie can help you with, to plan ahead. An app, that’s currently a prototype, helps you create new habits around your studies, and challenges you to expand your behavior. Charlie, with the help of planning tools and knowledge about brain stimulation, coaches you in a way that’s never been done before. The impression my target group gets leaves a print where behavior change becomes a possibility. Knowledge about the behavior that encourages the brain’s capacity combined with the moments when we use most parts of our brain, benefits the evolution itself. Have the courage to challenge yourselves in what your brain is capable of. You’re not stuck, you can change your habits whenever you want!

Holographic Communications Technologies : A qualitative study on the ethical and\or legal challenges based on the stakeholders' perspectives

Holographic communications technologies are a new digital technology being currently  developed by companies to be available to the public in the near future. Through holographic  communications technologies, the image of one user located in one place can be captured with  special equipment from different angles, so that its three-dimensional depiction is created  realistically. The 3D depiction is then transmitted in high-quality to another user located in some  other remote place, creating a whole new experience of unconventional data communication. This  new digital technology is planned to be deployed in several fields, such as marketing, education,  medicine, business and entertainment. However, like any new technological tool that is  introduced, also in the case of holographic communication technologies there are ethical and/or  legal challenges that could emerge from its misuse and set in danger fundamental human rights.  Hence, research was conducted as an interpretive qualitative study to explore the potential ethical  and/or legal challenges of holographic communications technologies by considering the  knowledge, opinions, experiences, and perspectives of legal experts, as well as experts on ethical  issues. The empirical data was collected through individual semi-structured interviews from the  selected participants, and from the review of mainly confidential documents, before being  subjected to a thematic analysis. The analysis of the data gave prominence to five themes which  were reviewed in the context of the research question and the proposed theoretical framework  with the help of Ethical Technology Assessment (ETA). The discussion of the findings revealed  that the most prominent challenges that could arise from the use of holographic communications  technologies are privacy and data protection issues. It was further shown that existing digital  technologies with similar features and the ethical and/or legal challenges confronted in the past  about them can be of help to approach the ones regarding holographic communications  technologies. The research indicated that the designing phase of a new digital technology, and  accordingly holographic communication technologies, is important as decisions are being made  about the technical features of it, as well as the capabilities it will offer to the end users. Hence, it  plays a vital role to whether the use of the digital technology will be according to ethics and laws  later on. It was also shown that the participation of end users in this phase is important to reflect  their concerns and desires with the creators before the new digital technology is introduced, but  it is still a challenge to decide who will be included and on what criteria they will be selected.   The research showed that existing ethical and legal frameworks are important to form a  corresponding framework for holographic communications technologies and can be built upon.  However, this is also a challenge, as, according to the research, any new framework that will be  constructed with regard to holographic communications technologies cannot possibly be  unanimous as different norms and societal beliefs apply to different territories or domains, but  should rather be “personalized” according to the targeted audience.
